  • @knightsabre2k
    @knightsabre2k 9 років тому +1

    Really glad to see Shining Force 3 get a mention in there. I was really bummed when scenario 2 and 3 never made it, even though Scenario 3 is pretty independent of the other 2, which weave in and out of eachothers stories.
    But the fan translation I put the most time into was definitely Namco X Capcom on the PS2. Dave might like it since it's a strategy RPG. Other games I've played translated were Tales of Phantasia and Clock Tower on the SNES, Super Robot Taisen alpha gaiden on the PS1 and a bit of Front Mission 5 on the PS2. I also tried to play the 4th Super Robot wars on the SNES... Man, they have come a long way since then...

    My favorite fan translation is one that I'm sure Dave will get a lot of enjoyment out of. Front Mission for the Super Famicom. Its a turn based Strategy RPG...with Battletech style mechs, that after you get a little bit into the story, you can completely rebuild how you like! You can even arm them all differently.

    Captain Rainbow English Translation is complete! But they are not releasing it yet. -_- My fav Fan Translate is Dynamite Headdy for SEGA MEGA DRIVE, there is some weird dialog in that game. In the USA release of Dynamite Headdy for SEGA Genesis, they just straight up took out all the dialog boxes, stuff just happens. They couldn't even be bothered to just make stuff up.

    Seiken Densetsu 3 for the SNES. I loved Secret of Mana as a kid (still do), and I would have gone nuts for this game as well. The altered main and minor plots depending upon which characters you selected is an awesome feature.

  • @papertreehouse
    @papertreehouse 9 років тому +1

    "Maybe I'm supposed to substitute my thoughts for his."
    I feel that is very much the case. I am not big on RPGs or anything, but I believe the philosophy behind it is that if the protagonist doesn't speak, you can more easily place your own dialogue, or ideas thereof, in its stead. For example, if you found the protagonist insufferable, you would naturally feel less immersed (that is, depending on how you identify yourself).
    Whereas you may never actually have any input in the conversations, it still gives the impression the most accurate simulation of "you" is present, only if the alias you are controlling has no actual voice. The closest you can get to choice in conversation while still maintaining that sense of "true" identification with the player character (while maintaining his or her essential traits) are those situations where you are given choices of response dialogue that means essentially the same thing, albeit with different words or attitude, but still prompts the same response from NPCs.

    For some reason, when you mentioned the character named GameSack, it made me imagine a game called GameSack... It would be a side scrolling hack and slash. The plot is that you guys want to record a review, but you either have various console breakdowns or other equipment issues, so you have to go out and get that stuff fixed. Along the way, you get attacked by ninjas, zombie, etc. You know, like in real life. You'd go through different neighborhoods, like a snow neighborhood, a horror neighborhood, Ancient Egypt neighborhood, like you do in your actual town.
    You can choose whether to play as Joe or Dave and the different attributes will be different, Joe would be faster, for example, since he has blast processing.

      My assumption is that they haven't covered it due to there not being an easy way to play it on TVs/Monitors without emulation and recording the screen through a camera always looks terrible, plus finding a working Game Gear is like finding a waterfall in a desert.

    One of the great things about modern systems having harddrives is that the patches can be applied to the game on the HDD. But also I guess the nice thing about Flashcarts for older games and systems with optical emulators. I guess it is just the less common ones and some in the middle that are still going be a little difficult.

    I was a huge fan of Secret of Mana on the SNES and was so excited when I heard SoM 2 was coming out! So imagine my gut wrenching horror when I found out it wasn't coming to the UK. I still brought the Japanese version Seikan Densetsu 3 which I still own! As you could guess I had no idea what was going on and it was lots of trial and error but what an amazing sequel! So when the fan translation came out I had to get it and was my sole reason in getting into emulators! It's a fantastic game the graphics are amazing with incredible detail over the cartoonish first one. If you're a fan of the first Mana or action RPGs I whole heartedly recommend giving it a go! :)

    Welp, this is just borderline retro and only for PC, but since you asked so nicely...
    I'm a translator over at thpatch, an auto translation portal/tool for the Touhou Project series (thpatch.net).
    It's really cool to work with, because you can edit your translations in a wiki table, and patch any of the 15 supported games in just a matter of seconds. It's even multi-lingual, which means anybody can translate the games in their own native tongue (or joke language).

    Learning the balance of holding your units back while simultaneously leveling them is part of the fun of fire emblem. Makes you rely on choke points and each battle has much more tension in it as one false move means reset or living with your mistake. I will say that the GameCube one has a great feature where you can divvy out excess exp to your units. Helps build up weaker guys like mages etc

    it's a '91 adventure game based on an anime made by Namco. It's got square enix JRPG graphics and awesome music and cutscenes. The game is very unknown so I'm here to spread the word: Get Nadia now!!

    I know it is early to say it but I think I found the perfect character choice for Cocoron, make a character that flights, with that I mean you should use wings, than give it the boomerang, and than harvest as long as the level before the boss until you get the ultimate upgrade, which shouldn't take long. Than you have an inferno of boomerangs and a character that can easily dodge everything.

    I'm not entirely sure if you've already covered this game, if not, if you do another games that weren't localized video, I recommend Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) on the Game Boy. I've been recently playing it on an emulator with a fan translation patch and I think it's a really great game and I think it's a shame it was never localized.

    Assault Suit Valken on the SFC was censored during its localisation. The original devs were surprised that the original vision for the game made it intact upon original release, and happy that it came out at all overseas in the form of Cybernator. Anyway, a wonderful fan translation exists that 'restores' the scenes that were cut and renders the official Euro / US release redundant.

    You should do more of these. There is sooooooo many amazing Japan only games.. been playing front mission series: gun hazard fan translation and it's one of the coolest action rpg I've played.. leveling up a mech suit? And my guy. Buying new guns weapons armor for both the suit and the character. Really cool being able to leave the mech suit

    +Game Sack: I'm sure you guys came across Star Ocean for the SNES, translated by the now defunct group, DeJap. This was my entryway to the Star Ocean series, and I'm loving it. It may not be necessary to check out as it came out for the PSP under "Star Ocean: First Encounter."

    Thank you for covering Shining Force III more. I love part one, it's a killer SRPG engine. The worst part of untranslated games isn't the unknown story, it's making sure you are wearing the right equipment in RPG's.

    When you guys get to part two, be sure to try the excellent PSX translation of Policenauts. There was supposed to be a patch for the Saturn version as well, but it looks like that was quietly abandoned.

    Not sure if you're going to do a Halloween episode this year, but it's probably worth mentioning that Cocoron had some of its soundtrack borrowed by the early version of a creepy PC platformer called Eversion. Check it out if you've never played it. Just be sure not to read up on anything about Eversion, or it might spoil the game for you.

    +Game Sack 14:00 If you don't like that you lose units in Fire Emblem, play Fire Emblem Awakening, Heroes of light and shadow (never released, but got a complete and polished translation), and Fates (coming very soon in 2016, while there's a fan translation taking place), casual mode lets your fallen units comeback after the battle's over, and phoenix mode brings back an ally in the next turn after defeated (Fates only).

    I'd say there are two fantranslations you ought to feature next time around for certain. First is the translation of Seiken Densetsu 3 for the Super Famicom (One of the first fan translations I played a very long time ago) and the other is the fan translation of Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance. Both are well-done translations of games that I'd have love to see official releases of, but never came state side.

    The Mother 3 fan translation is the first one that really comes to mind. The Star Ocean translation was incredible as well.
    But some I'm interested in are fan re-translations - I think it was DeJap that did a version of Final Fantasy IV that was really well done. Sky Rendar Labs also did a re-translation of Final Fantasy VI that was pretty good.

    Star Ocean for the SNES... We got the second game on the ps1 and it was an absolute hit, seeing as the rest of the series was localised after that. But until the PSP remake came out, the only way we could play the first instalment was the fan translated ROM. Great game, not my favourite in the series, but still great.

    I like how you guys didnt go just for the ones everyone knows about and instead covered allot of the more obscure games to get translations.
    An interesting game to get a tanslation is Berserk Millenium Falcon on the PS2, a sequel to the dreamcast's sword of berserk you covered before on the licence games episode. It's worth giving it a shout out as it is a great game for anyone who's a fan of berserk and/or dynasty warriors style games as the gameplay is pretty solid.
    It's playable on both the console and the emulator(altho emulator's a but sassy with it's hud's).

    From what I've heard, Sylvan Tale on the Game Gear is actually a fantastic Action RPG. Gameplay is similar to the Legend of Zelda series, and the main character can collect items to transform into various other forms like a merman or a mole. Of course, it was only released in Japan, but it's considered a hidden gem on the Game Gear.

    Didn't Monster World IV on the Megadrive get an unofficial translation (before it came out on the Virtual Console for WII)? Cool game BTW, although I didn't love it quite as much as Wonderboy in Monster World (or the Dragon's Trap on SMS)
