  • I review the Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi v8 engine as a heavy duty mechanic and see how well this hemi engine tows under a heavy load. I tow 8,000lbs with this RAM 1500 and go over power numbers, acceleration, fuel economy, engine braking, and pull some hills. I also compare the ram 1500 5.7L hemi to the ford F150 5L Coyote engine and the Chevy 1500 5.3L V8.

    I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I finally got to play with the 5.7L hemi in the ram 1500 trucks and we pulled my 8,000lbs trailer up and down the highway on my 200km towing loop.
    I was excited to get back behind the wheel of this 5.7 Hemi and compare it to the ford f150 5L v8 and the Chevy 1500 5.3L v8 because I think all 3 engines are in the same ball park of performance and cost.
    The first thing I noticed was that this ram 1500 squatted much more with the trailer hooked up to the hitch then the other trucks probably because of the coil suspension suspension the ram 1500's utilize vs traditional leaf spring the ford and Chevy trucks still use.
    In terms of acceleration the 5.7L hemi has tons of power and pulling ability, the torque band on this big displacement v8 is broad and power is always available. but the 5L from ford actually accelerated quicker and pulled harder which is very interesting to see.
    engine braking is a highlight for the 5.7L hemi, this truck was much much better then any of the other two engine. It kept my speed right at 110km/h and did not go any faster.
    another pro for this 5.7L hemi is the fuel economy. this v8 was more efficient then both the ford 5L and the chevy 5.3L v8. my suspicion is that because of the low end torque the engine did not have to work as hard throughout the whole towing test resulting in better fuel economy.
    I think the 3.21 gears in the truck I tested really let the5.7 Hemi down. with taller gears I think the hemi would of accelerated much better and could of kept lower in the rpm band going up those steep hills.
    overall I think the 5.7L hemi is a great towing engine and won't let anyone down.

    We just did a 3,500 mile trip to Mississippi and back through Carlsbad, Ruidoso, Santa Fe New Mexico and then back through Eastern Arizona to home, Sierra Vista, Arizona. We pulled our 26' travel trailer weighing 5,500lbs. My '21 Big Horn with the 5.7 non etorq and 3.92's did a great job. Averaged 11.1 mpg.

    I have a 2019 RAM 1500 Rebel HEMI V8 with 3.92 and air suspension. I tow trailers long distance 7,800 and 4000Lbs and had no issues; the air suspension is amazing and works flawlessly - zero issues. On hwy when towing I run in 7th gear and when going uphill goes to 6th gear but on flat i saw even running in 8th speed. I think 3.92 is better for towing but maybe not as fuel efficient as 3.21. I changed the transmission fluids once as recommended by the dealer and transmission runs perfect no issues.

      The 3.21 has 81% of the towing power of the 3.92. The 3.92 pretty much has 20% more power ratio than the 3.21. I have had them both and I do feel the difference. The only benefit it’s gas mileage is better in 3.21. You do get 2-3 miles better gas mileage.

      It won’t change anything. The truck will just be a gear higher but with the same rpms

      It changes a lot actually. My previous truck had 3.92 and my new truck has 3.21. 3.92 struggles much less on take off and hills.

    Can you do a test of the Nissan titan, and the Toyota Tundra 5.7? I enjoy the american trucks, but I want to see how the Japanese trucks compare!

      My 5.7 Tundra is made in Texas lol but I know what you mean. They're generally more reliable than the big 3 but the downside is a bit less capabilities depending on trim and bad gas mileage.

      @@Pantelifts10 True, but sometimes people do want less gadgets, and features on a truck. The 5.7 Iforce doesn't have MDS does it? People prefer toyota/nissan because they don't keep up with the latest technology in vehicles like GM/RAM/FORD

      Sadly the Toyota isn't available with the 5.7 since 2022 and the Titan is discontinued. 😕

    We drove a 10k pound bumper pull RV from Dallas, TX to Lake Powell, Arizona and then on to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Towing at 70 and 75 the truck lived at 3,000rpm and often at 4,000rpm over a 2,400 mile trip and temps of 109 and 110. It was an absolute beast. I needed to manage the shifts and limit the gears in the mountains. The truck has a 6” lift and 37” tires. It did incredibly well, it had power for days. It’s a 2019 RAM 1,500 with 40k miles.

    I love my 5.7 hemi. It may not top the charts in every metric but it gets the job done, sounds good doing it and rides decently in my Bighorn. My 3rd 5.7 and I have yet to want another drivetrain.

    Greetings Alex; I was waiting your vidio; Thank's and CONGRATULATIONS I finally heard what I wanted from the 5.7 liter HEMI.
    More and more the 5.7 hemi engine becomes more reliable and performs well. The truth is that it continues to amaze me more and more when compared to other engines like the 5.0 liter Coyote from Ford and the 5.3 liter from GM. HEMI 5.7 Lts. you have a mostly fierce fan!

      The 5.0 is always screaming when towing heavy. The torque curve of the hemi is better for towing comfort

      @@Clamjammer it’s screaming 500rpm more than the hemi. Similar fuel economy loaded and way better than the hemi unloaded. Also considerably lighter on its feet. The coyote also has a more reliable track record.

    I think the 3.21 makes the most sense. I’ve towed a TT ~ 6500lbs and man- going down hill is scary. And that’s with the trailer brake controller. I never lacked for power- but I couldn’t imagine towing more weight (e.g 12k) and going down hill. If you are going over 8000 lbs just get a bigger truck.

      Especially since the truck has the same final drive, I’ll put after gear three as the 3.92.

      Yeah, downhill, with 3.92 gears and trailer brake controller, and heavy duty rear coil springs, when it comes to going downhill in a lightweight half-ton truck, I just assume ill be replacing my brake pads sooner than normal with continued use. But going down 7% grades, I move over into the slow lane with hazards and cruise at about 55mph, just to be extra safe. I don't have air suspension but i also added larger bump stomps for the rear that limits sag by an 1". The heavy duty coils back there (add 1" of rear height), and I'm also on a 4" lift with 35s.

    Thank you for doing this review. I have a 2019 Ram 1500 with 2wd 5.7 Hemi with 3.21 gears and I pull a 7700 LB RV Camper. I think it does very well and I pretty much stay around 6th gear most of time pulling. I got skittish on using the Cruise Control because of the amount of downshifting that occurs but i think I'm going to try it out on the next trip. I average 9.5 MPG so maybe cruise control it might do better with all the extra shifting. I also have a mild Flowmaster exhaust installed on it sounds great at any RPM. When I first bought this truck it was mainly for daily driving and never thought I would be towing anything with it. Now i own a 2022 Grand Design 260RB Travel Trailer at the max is 7700 lbs and it comes in a 31.5 in length. I do use a Weight Distributing hitch but i feel you will always feel more sway because of the coil overs verses a planted leaf spring set up. I still enjoy it and nots a white knuckle experience.

    I’ve got a Ram 2017 Cummins 2500 and it tows like a beast, but it is punishing when unladen. If I was to swap rigs, the 5.7 gas looks like a great choice for my not-often towing.

    I honestly kinda feel like the 6.2 gm motor competes more with the 5.0 coyote and 5.7 hemi, in terms of power, this test would be really cool if you were also able to tow with a 6.2 and also add that to the comparison

      Nah the 6.2 is Gms premium engine like Fords Ecoboost option. The 5.0 5.7 and 5.3 engines are what 90% of workers are using and buying in their preferable brand. This is a based comparison. The 6.2 is the comp to the 3.5

    I’ve got the 2019 I’ve owned it since brand new an I love mine it’s one of the solid ones I’ve put 200 thousand plus km now in going to do a suspension lift 6 inch on mine now cause the suspension is getting a bit too soft now all with the 6 inch lift I’ll be getting all new steering parts and suspension parts , i stay on top of the oil changes I’ve already changed the trans fluid I’ve still got to change my axle fluids and transfer case too . But I’ve got none of the usual problems the 5.7 have valve tick and the exhaust head tick . Yha I love my RAM

    Your spot on with the 5.0, I had 2 trucks with it one had 331 gears the other had 373. The 331 truck was good but it definitely had to rev to maintain speed with a trailer. The 373 truck is much better on the same road pulling the same load it would stay a gear higher and pull at about 500-750 rpm lower than the 331 truck

    I love how you always admit to being a little bias but still lay out the facts. I actually prefer the coil suspension over leaf because the ride quality is drastically better. I got the air bags tthat sit in the coils so a litttle air and no more squat. Only ever had one air bag burst tthat was towing an 9000 pound trailer on a rough ass highway in -40. The hemi with a vararam intake, 90mm throttle body and 3.92 gears and she tows like a dream. Out of all the 1500s ive used ill take mine anyday for towing.

    Would you do a tow test with Chevys 6.2L? I own a 17 High Country with this engine. I like it and it still get decent fuel economy. It's a screamer that's for sure. Cheers and great video on Hemi

    That's excellent fuel economy for that truck and load. I have a 2024 GMC 2500HD with the Duramax and it gets horrible MPG towing, it'll get 21 driving and 13 towing a little 3500# load. I'd probably be in single digits towing that load.

    I wish Ram added the 392 V8 on the 1500 I don't mind loosing a few mpg but the punch it will pack would knock out the other trucks for sure.

    My 2018 Chevy 6.2L towed very well. Didn’t mean much since my lifters failed at 110,000 miles though. Just traded it on a 2024 ram 5.7 321 gears

    If you had the cruise control on during the downhill it will use the brakes without any indication. That’s probably why it stayed close to 110

    High ATF Temperature:
    This, together with modern low viscosity ATF , has been "programmed" by the manufacturer to help every little bit with fuel economy and decrease the transmission's life span.
    There's a bypass valve/ ATF thermostat in the lines going to towards the cooler.
    Get rid of it and enjoy cooler ATF Temperatures and a longer service life.

    19.2 l/100km is quite a bit better than what we get towing our 6000 lb travel trailer. we typically get 22-25 l/100 km.. same engine, same 321 gears, same truck. we drove that section of hwy 2 this summer at 100 kph and that's what we got. engine breaking on that downhill doesn't happen towing a travel trailer. aerodynamic drag is hugely different towing a 10 ft tall, 8 ft wide box! we typically tow at 100 kph, at 110 fuel economy drops to the 26-28 l/100km range. we did pull a long steep hill near gaspesie(gaspe peninsula a couple of years ago(17% grade) at wide open throttle, 70-80 kph, saw the fuel consumption go to 99 l/100 km going up, down the other side, also 17% grade, consumption went down to almost zero. it's a long steep hill, steepest i've ever seen on a provincial highway

    Look like an e-torque hemi. Which I think cuts into the towing and payload numbers with that extra battery. Also, were you in tow/haul mode? When I tow with that truck, in tow/haul mode, I never get to the 8th gear. I also have the 3.21 ratio. Love it. Mostly a daily driver. But when I need to pass while towing up a mountain, that hemi just keeps accelerating!

    Love the reviews, but i like ford 5.0l. Mated to the 6r80 tranny. I have 3.55:1 ratio In my f150 and it tows smooth and doesnt hunt for gears

    I must say, I have done too many cam and lifter jobs and exhaust manifold reseals to want a 5.7 hemi, but the performance was very nice. It is tuned to shift the transmission wisely unlike the 5.3 and possibly l(can't remember) the coyote 5.0 with constant gear hunting. The gear ratios are what they are whether a direct comparison or not because the trucks that have been tested here I'd say generally have the most standard equipment. As a heavy truck mechanic, automotive mechanic (engine and electrical,) and now a transmission mechanic, I have to take the transmissions as serious as the engines. Not so much the transmissions themselves, but the tuning. Gms v8 trucks have awful tuning engine and trans. I feel that ford has very good tuning, but this ram with the zf is also very good. Just my 2 cents.. lol that and probably $4 now may buy a cup of coffee at an American Waffle House. This isn't including tip...

      I can't say enough good things about the ZF 8 speed. really solid units. the 5.7L is what it is , its not perfect but most people seem to have good luck with it.

      @nickgrant42 I honestly haven't done any work to an Iforce 5.7. I'd say that's a great thing. They sound good, make good power, ect. I think the biggest complaint a person would have on them is they are a little thirsty, but that is what a corolla is for.. lol

      The Ram transmission tuning is a very underrated aspect of all Ram trucks (including the 68rfe despite its reliability) that’s made me a Ram fan boy and hate the GM trucks I’ve driven as of recent. Ram makes trucks that are very enjoyable to drive in my opinion

    Think you're spot on regarding the gearing on the Hemi- my better half has a 2020 e-Torque Hemi with 3.92's; its max towing is over 11,000 lbs. We haven't put it to the test... yet. Hope you test an e-Torque Hemi with 3.92's in the future; the e-Torque is supposed to add up to 130 ft/lbs. of torque at the bottom end and my guess is that it would shame all three trucks towing wise. One thing I'd add is that the standard fuel tank is on the small size (23 gal. iirc) which means more frequent stops while towing. At my age that's not necessarily a bad thing 😉 but if we were buying again I'd be looking for a larger fuel tank along with the 3.92's. In my view the 3.21's seriously compromise the truck.

    Should be better to get the power down at lower rpm that wind the crap out of it to get to the power band. I think the 392 gears would really help. My 2023 Warlock has the 355 gears and the 3.6 as i am pretty sure the 355 are standard with the tow package? i also have the limited slip

    The hemi, should be sold only with 3.92 gear ratio. Every person in the world deserves to experience of the high gear ratio with hemi. It floats like an electrical car, and you have a feel of your engine behavior as you drive. Adding on the 8 speed transmission makes it an art. Unfortunately fiat is cheap metal cabin quality, that’s their only knock on my part and certain parts underneath it should upgrade to Semi aluminum materials. I would have payed price difference for the additional quality.

    When comparing engines, you compare the Chevrolet 5.3 L and the Ford 5 L but you discount the 5.6 L from Nissan. Now I get it, Nissan is discontinuing the Titan in 2024, but it actually makes more horsepower per liter and more torque per liter than the 5.7 and is the closest comparable size at 5.6 L. In addition, when you look at the torque curve between the Dodge and the Nissan, they are very comparable.

      I had one of the original 5.6 Titan's for 9 years and I will say that engine was fantastic. I have since had 2 hemi Rams which are super smooth and powerful but in terms of low end Torque I would say the Titan has everyone else beat. The thing is their are so few sold not sure how relevant it is.

    yeah the 3.21 isn't helping. That maybe why the transmission was warmer in the front side of your loop. 4.10's and you would have had a towing machine. especially if you'd had manual shift for the ZF8HD. That is the best transmission of the three. Ram really misses the mark removing column and center console shifters, that and the stupid horn beep if you get out of the truck with the Key Fob in your pocket, with your engine idling. That engineer should be fired. I was rooting for the 5.7 and it still almost overcome the 3.21 gears. 'Note to smellantis' you should have put the 5.7 in the Gladiator.     It’s hard to tell from the video, but how is the steering pulling the max weight? And by steering, I’m referring to the steering wheel. Is it staying centered or is the weight causing the steering to be out of center? My 2021 Rebel’s steering wheel is almost at the 1 o’clock position when I have the bed halfway loaded and was told by dealership that it’s normal. Sure doesn’t feel normal and besides, it’s never done that before. Even without any weight in the bed, the steering wheel is off centered. Again, they say it’s normal.

    We used a 2023 ram 1500 with a 5.7 this year pulling a 18' landscaping trailer on a tree job, hauling tree remains and it was sad how much it struggled with a few ton in tow. I had a 2000 half ton Chevy with a 5.3 and it pulled my gooseneck that is 5000# empty with a car on it better than the ram pulled a light trailer.

    I had a really scary nightmare last where I went outside and saw a Ram and a Chevy in the driveway.
    I woke up screaming and running outside. Thankfully though, to my absolute relief, my Ford was still there..

    Are you sure that isn’t a 3.92 axle? My ford with a 3.73 and the same final trans ratio is at 1750 at 70mph at top gear, where you were at 2000 top gear

    I use my ram 1500 5.7 with the 3.21 gears for junk removal. I tow a 12ftLx6.5ftWx5.5ftH Lamar Dump trailer. It tows great. Wondering how long my transmission will last. Im at 100,000mi on the odometer.

      Do you replace the transmission fluid regularly? ZF recommends 60k miles, so I'd go less than that if you're regularly towing.

      Saw in posting twice about this that effects 2% of 5.7 mostly around 100k mom. You should realize it also effects the 5.3 Silvarado and the GMC.

    So smallest displacement did the best. So the idea of bigger is better is false. Not to mention the 5 liter is the only one of the 3 that’s dual injection not direct injected

      I never worry about which engine is quicker, neither should you. If it's that important then you need to be in the 6.2 or the 3.5 ecoboost, not the 5.0 either. So clearly if you're interested in the 5.0, you have reasons other than WOT 0 to 60 runs. The hemi is a simple, reliable engine, admittedly its also old and hasn't been updated in 14 years. It's actually impressive that the hemi is still that competitive with engines that have had solid refreshes. How many refreshes hasn't the 5.0 had since 2009 when the hemi last updated? Back in 2009 it crushed the competition, but time moves on. As for the heat, that's a tuning issue. Remove the active grill shutters up front, drop in a 180 thermostat, and you can also buy a $30 part for the transmission to keep the tranmission cooler loop open; once you do all that the heating issues are non-existant, speaking from experience here as a 2019 hemi owner. All those things mentioned were designed that way to keep the hemi hot, it helps with MPG and emission type issues.

      @@sprint2648 Yes, and the hemi was originally designed back in 2005, it was last updated in 2009. The fact that it's still running hard with the competition is amazing. It's a strong running engine and is one I feel most confident in owning in a half ton when it comes to gas engines. Used parts alone are everywhere, meaning I can run it for decades and not worry about it.

    They call it a hemi, but quite honestly it doesn't have hemispherical pistons. IE not a true hemi, just a marketing gimmick. does the engine perform, yes. I own one but am ashamed to hear it called a hemi.

    I owned a 2019 5.7 ltr 4x4 with 3.73 gears when I first got behind the wheel I asked the salesman who stole the other 2 cylinders this thing didn't tow worth crap no power fuel economy was the worst I ever saw when towing I sold this junk at 32 thousand kms never looked back.

    Well, it still doesn't impress me even a little bit. I've towed with a Hemi 3.92 and my 365hp/420lbft 2016 3.5 EB with 3.31 was better by far. You clearly show the bias. Grins every time you say "5.7 Hemi". Looking at the 2020 engine dyno shows what I have said about the N/A V8s. It makes me sick to hear V8s have "good low-end torque" low end is not 4000rpm, especially when redline is 5600-6000rpm. That is clearly in the upper mid band. I don't even consider the 3.5EB 500lbft@3100rpm low-end(it has more than 450lbft@2000rpm). The hemi with 413lbft@4100 is still lacking compared to the original 3.5EBs 420lbft@2500. I dont care what motor is under the hood of whatever truck. There just needs to have real torque art a real useful RPM. So 3.5EB and 7.3V8 are the base gas choices. Everything else is better suited in a car(less load). Personally, diesel is the only way to go as every single one on the market has a peak below 1800rpm. The Cummins 6.7 is the highest on the market currently, previous record was 6.0 PSD tied with the LB7 jukamax

      @miltonzinn8732 what are you talking about? I care about efficiency, and diesels clearly walk gas motors for efficiency. A gas F350 with the 4.30 axle gets 8mpg at 28000lbs(max GCWR). The same 4.30 axle in the diesel F450(46,700lbs max GCWR) gets slightly better than 8mpg. If you look at the actual work being done(total weight moved) the diesel nearly twice as efficient while the tire size(half inch difference), axle ratio, and transmission are all the same. Torque is the part that does all the work, because HP is a rating for how fast a certain amount of work gets done
      Example
      400hp@6000rpm is 350lbft
      Yet
      400hp@1800rpm is 1167lbft
      They are the Horsepower rating. But vastly different is PHYSICAL CAPABILITY

      @@jnk26 yes, those are all numbers. The point you were making though, at least how I understood it, is you want 100% torque and power right from idle. Therefore, go electric. You can’t expect an engine to make full power without energy. A gas motor usually makes peak torque around 3-4k rpm with a 7k redline. A diesel does peak around 1.6-1.9k with a 3-4k redline. Again, we’re talking about 40% of redline. You used a lot of numbers to say both engines make peak torque around 40% of redline.

      @miltonzinn8732 All the V8 gasser are 5600rpm redline(except the 5.0 at 6k). 4000rpm in 2/3 the way to redline(5.0 only) the 4100rpm for the 5.3, 5.7, 6.2, 5.6 is 1500rpm below the 5600rpm redline. 3300rpm over the idle(800rpm is clutch engagement) that's almost 3/4 the way to the top. Where diesels V8s are 3400rpm redline(not much up there) and it I6 doesn't roll much beyond 3100. With the HP peaks at 2600(Ford) and 2800(Durajunk and Cummins), the peak torque comes in at 1600(Ford) and 1800 for the others. 800 and 1000rpm higher than Clutch engagement(off idle torque measurement rpm for semi trucks).less than 1/3 the useful rpm band. Now what makes the diesel appealing to me, is the . fact that the torque is at a usable rp. while driving down the highway. Not needing to downshift 5 or 6 gears to pull a hill with a load, and the load can be significant and still get decent mileage. Because the engine working in its peak BMEP means it can do the most work with the least amount of fuel, this always happens near the peak torque. Now that diesel electric hybrid that Edison motors has developed, is on a front that would work for me. You could put a 350hp Cummins 6.7 in their truck and still get by just fine because it's only needs the peak output when running in parallel with the batteries(it can run direct, charge only or hybrid) you could make a similar system in a small car with a
      Small rotory generator(Mazda is developing this as a range extender). With enough battery on board to supply a few full load pulls, you can get by with a smaller, more efficient charging point. making the system work with balance of strong performance, and efficient recharging. With less emissions as the charging motor will operate at a set load(less soot). Ballard did this in transit buses back in the mid-2000s. We now have better electrical components that can handle more current efficiently.

    If you watch tow test on the ike gauntlet the 6.4 hemi gets smoked by a 6.0 Chevy while the hemi puts out much higher numbers so its either dodge is lying or they are not putting it to the ground .Watch the vid on Mr truck its not even close
