2014-16 toyota corolla creaking noise fixed!

  • 2016 toyota corolla making creeking/ groaning noises while slowly going over bumps/driveway and turning. The lower control arm bushings (front control arms, rear bushing) are making this noise. Grease them with brake caliper grease (extremely sticky and weather resistant) and your car will be back to quiet like when you bought it.
    EDIT:
CRC Industries 05359 is the grease I used.
Yes, you can grease the bushings without removing a single bolt.
If you aren't comfortable getting under your car, take it to any auto shop, show them this video and pay them 30$ and they can do this in 15 mins.
If this works for you, post a comment so everyone knows it works!!
One guy said his control arm bolts were loose, this is uncommon, but make sure they are tight before assuming anything else is wrong.
I hope this video collectively saves hundreds of thousands of dollars paid to dealerships that think they have us in their pocket.
**5000 views assumes 5000 people have had this issue. If their local dealership diagnoses "bad control arms" and charges the customer, thats approximately 820$ lowest out the door for labor and 2 control arms x5000= 4.1 million$!!! Greedy F-ers!!

Thank god I found this video. This is the exact same noise my 17 corolla is making, and I thought it was a suspension problem. Soon as it gets warmer outside, I'm greasing mine up. Bought a 2016 Corolla S brand new and this issue started when it hit about 10K kilometers. The dealer never admitted that the noise existed even if their mechanics test drove it. I have 2016 Toyota Auris Hybrid (Corolla in US). The creaking noise at slow speeds, whilst going up a slight incline, with slightly breaking brings up this noise.
Dealer said it was the anti roll bar bushes, so i left it for a few years, until this lockdown I decided to change them as a pair. Low and behold, creaking went away, until a few hours later it came back, not as much but you can still hear it!

Quick Update: Jacked the car up, pressure washed the ball joints and control arm, cleaned it up. Sprayed Silicone spray, i let it soak for an hour. Then i spray lithium white grease into the control arm and all the joints on it, wiped excess off. Left it standing for a few hours. Almost 2 weeks later and 0 noise, no squeaks, nothing! Also feels nicer on the turns at slow speeds. Thanks, really appreciated, as a new control arm is £100 plus on each side, not mentioning the labour to install 🙄

Not a problem, glad i could help. I think the way the bushing was designed, it was a complex rubber bushing that wasn't solid rubber, there's an inner and outer rubber circle connected by some rubber sections. The open spaces weren't big enough and when torqued down, it squeezes the inner and outer rubber too close to each other and any movement causes the noise

On July 9, 2020, Toyota sent out a Technical Service Bulletin for this problem on the 2014-2019 Corolla. It is covered under Basic Warranty only, so most of us won't get it fixed for free (the 2014-2017 Corolla were already out of Basic Warranty at that time). At least, we now know where the problem is. I have a 2017 Corolla that has been making the same noise since the day I bought it at 2000 miles. It's only noticeable in the cold when braking over bumps, or uneven surface. Spraying AT-205 on the lower control arm bushings seemed to have dismissed the noise for a day. Look like greasing the lower control arm bushings is the only way to go. Any grease mess on the street, you can blame it on Toyota.

Watch Scotty Kilmer video called "Mechanics Don't Want You to Know This About Your Car's Suspension". He sprayed AT-205, which is a rubber rejuvenate product in those bushings instead. I used that product before and it really make rubber more flexible. I looked at those bushings and there were no places for grease to penetrate (they are just solid rubber bushings). So, AT-205 maybe a better option. If grease works, then try it, but I'm going to try AT-205 first.

@@BravoRed691 Yup, it only lasted about one day for me as well. I haven't sprayed it again. I think it works when it is wet. That said, it worked as a lubricant, even though, there was nothing to lubricate. Maybe, it soaked in the little cracks and helped dampening the vibration noises. It is supposed to make rubber flexible though. I sprayed it everywhere, to all the rubber parts on my car. I don't know if silicone spray would help. General purpose grease might ruin it. Anyway, I don't have that noise anymore. I only hear it when the weather is cold.

Toyota has an updated control arm and bushings for the 2014-2019 corolla. The lubrication will only be temporary, and is just a good way to confirm it's coming from the rear bushing. Unfortunately, the control arms and bushings need to be replaced to solve the problem

  • @lanfan1464

How come they didn't grease it from the factory? My Corolla started making that noise from the day I bought it at 2,000 miles. Mine only makes that noise when I first drive it (when it is cold), going over bumps and braking at the same time. Not a huge issue, but kinda annoying. I have greased the heck out of the brake sliding pins with no result. I think I did spray some silicone lubricant in those control arm bushings as well. I will have to try that again sometime with grease and more silicone spray.

Kaden, first time on your You tube channel. I have the same cracking noise on a '09 Toyota Corolla. I had replaced the sway bar links, then the struts, bearing mounts were OK. I got 80 hours of work in trying to determine the issue of the noise. Watched You tube videos on what noise a bad strut mount makes along with sway bar link. This noise was different; like a metal cracking sound. You nailed it. The part I don't understand is your not to grease a lower control arm. You have the control arm frame with a built in front and rear rubber bushing with a metal sleeve in the middle where the bolt goes thru. No grease or lubrication is required. There must be a metal part of the lower control arm that rubs against the rear arm housing that causes a creak sound. I will take your advice and try it. My concern is the noise coming back after 1-2 years later. Thank You for advice in helping everyone. I hope this solves my noise problem.

could the front or rear control arms be the cause of sideways roll (during wind gusts) at speeds over 55mph? (steering seems straight but pushes sideways during wind gusts more so than normal)

@gbxx6692 it's a pretty light weight car, unless the car has very high mileage and other suspension parts are clearly broken, I don't think the control arms are contributing to that. I'm no expert by any means but every light weight car I've driven in wind gets pushed around a lot

This is a change from when the car was newer it had better handling at high speeds. I'm not sure what to look at as an alignment was done and premium tires installed. I was told possibly bushings or rear control arm, but nothing definitive. The springs do have some bounce and occasional bushing sound but not broken.

@user-ks9cg5lh2w in that case, maybe the shocks are bad, tire pressures are high enough? Next, I would check ball joints/control arm bushings

@user-ks9cg5lh2w *I'm not sure if it's common for the springs on these cars to get soft over time but that could be a part of it too

the creaking has turned into knocking noise now on my 2016.. unfortunately this didn't help.. 55K miles

This happened on my 2015 at 50k. There was a bolt loose on the control arm and I tightened it and it was fixed. Can you describe the sound in more detail? It's faint right?

    • @pog_reviews5406

Yes! Tighten the control arm bolts/torque them down. 10% of people here need to do that and it fixes the issue

@@pog_reviews5406 Do you know if the creaking sound hou helped solve in this video is cosmetic or is something wrong with the car? If I just leave it as it with the creaking can it damage anything? Wondering if it's an actual problem or just a minor annoyance.

The completely cosmetic unless the bolts need to be tightened down. Now, if you grease them, torque bolts down and the sound is the same, it may be another problem like struts/bearings/ball joints. The bushings do have a life on them and will eventually need to be replaced. If you drive on potholes all day, maybe 75k miles, smooth roads, maybe 120k miles.
