Glenfiddich 12, Glenlivet 12 and Glenmorangie 10. Three great entry points for anyone wanting try Scotch whisky for the first time.

Frank lampard I agree. Glenfiddich 12 was my first scotch. Then Glenlivet 12. I prefer Glenlivet to Glenfiddich in the 12 year old expression but I find the 15 year old solara vat Glenfiddich superior to the Glenlivet 15 French Oak. It is such an enjoyable experience. It might be my favourite single malt scotch.

Here is my little story. I used to drink whiskey with Coke when I was right after 20 and I felt like I'm not giving it enough appreciation. I tried different basic blends on a rocks but I couldn't stand the taste. A few weeks ago I got Gentleman Jack from my fiancee because she saw me watching your videos so I decided to give it a try neat but this time I took it easy and I tried to find things I couldn't before. Today I'm hitting 31 and I think that I was just not mature enough to appreciate whiskey and after trying Glenfiddich 12 I definitely know that there is so many different whiskeys out there to try ,and I hope I'm going to live long enough to try all of them. Greetings from Polish guy living in small Irish town called Tralee :)

Guys, today my beautiful wife bought me a bottle of this whiskey. While I was sitting in my office/game room/whiskey vault, sipping on it, she brought me a double chocolate chip brownie. I ate the brownie, and sipped the whiskey. It was a fantastic combo. I highly recommend it.

I have been watching these videos for the last few weeks and this one caught my eye. I haven't had a scotch before and have been wanting to try for quite a while. My roommate ended up buying a bottle for my birthday and it definitely did not disappoint. It is a much different experience than the typical bourbon I drink but it is a welcome change that adds a much different drinking experience. I have so much more I want to try so I need to search these bare shelves in Utah to try to find everything on my list!

I had a chance tonight to finally try Glenlivet 18, my wife and daughter in law thought I had lost my mind when I sat there and kept smelling it and taking small sips going through each little flavor I could pick out in it. what got me the most was the hint of smoke and at the end I tasted am almost pepper flavor. It was amazing, thank you Dan and Rex for opening my taste buds to try something new and to be able to try it the right way. keep up the great work, love the videos.

my favorite of the Glenfiddich's is the 14 aged in bourbon barrels. but since I wanted you guys to go taste the glenlivet 12 and tell me that you dont taste hints of Lobster! like a nice tail meat in a bisque or lobster in general. I did pair it with chicken tacos, rice, cheese, sour cream. but every time I have it now i get very strong tastes of lobster. BTW thanks for being such a great channel. since watching I moved on from Gin and have a giant Scotch, Bourbon, and Irish whiskey collection. congratulations on the success and i Hope one day to join the academy, become a sommelier and fend off mooches for the end of time. Cheers.

I had held off on opening this bottle because I wanted to dive headfirst into Scotch, so my first few bottles were peat centered, Ardberg and Lagavulin. Been branching out of late and open my Glenallachie last week and the Glenfiddich this week. I'm impressed. The apple juice rings true but I'd add a hint of pear. It is smooth. I can see myself over imbibing pretty easily 🤪. Good stuff. Reasonably priced and found everywhere. Love the channel. It's nice having a resource to ...just heard you mention the pear lol.. go to find out about the bottles.

Good review, is one of my go to single malts. Don't buy it as much now it has went from around $35 a bottle to $55. Great beginner scotch along with the other Glenn's. I was introduced to this by my uncle in England who got me into whiskey's, especially neat and not mixed with anything. Was years ago, now have a much wider appreciation of whiskey's....

Came over from Modern Rogue. Love the channel and I love whisk(e)y. I always keep a bottle of Lagavulin and rotate through various other types. Glenfiddich 12 was my entry point when I was a young Scotch drinker (it's what my dad kept in the house, and I think it's probably many people's first/only whisky), but over the years I moved to prefer Islay's heavy peat smoke.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +9

Yes, that's a very familiar route for me. Seems like many categories contain a similar trajectory. In beer, start smooth and friendly, end up heavy hops. In coffee, start with cream and sugar, end up single origin espresso. In scotch, start in the Speyside and end up in Islay ;-)

Hi guys! I am a wine sales associate working for a certain national retail chain that is not BevMo...I am just getting into whiskey thanks in part to your channel and having recently visited High West Distillery in Wanship, Utah. I just wanted to say that you two make learning about whiskey very easy to understand, and non-intimidating--especially for a female whiskey drinker in a male-dominated market. Thank you for all that you do, and for allowing us peasants to learn from your knowledge! Keep on keeping on!

I finally got to try this - found a box of the 12, 15, and 18 in 210ml version. Awesome way to try them. Funny enough I prefer the 12 and 15! The 18 is a little harsher and I'm finding I'm actually not a fan of sherry barrel influence. Love the hint of smoke that I actually didn't find until I left the dram sitting out for 10-15 minutes. Love it!

Just got a bottle of this as payment for a job, this is just a great friendly whiskey. I don't think the bottle is going to last very long. You say you get apple in it, but I really get much more pair and a slight hint of something else, a more earthy or woodsy note, almost like a pine forest. Or maybe that's the forest I am drinking it in. It's probably just the trees. Either way it's a great whiskey in my opinion. Thanks for the great video boys.

10 years ago Glenfiddich 12 and Glenlivet 12 were the first two Single Malts that I ever tried. They turned me off Scotch whisky and I turned to Bourbons. It wasn't until earlier this year when I tried Laphroaig Quarter Cask that I fell in love with Peated Scotch and I started investigating Single/Blended Malts from around the world. Most Speyside Scotches are too tame for me. Being in Ontario Canada with some of the highest alcohol prices it was easier to get quality Bourbons than Single Malts.

Glenfiddich was first single malt I tried. It was a present and I never quite got into it. Funny thing is years later I was given Glenmorangie 10. I immediately loved it, and when I finished the bottle I tried the Glenfiddich again, and liked it much better. I guess the Glenmorangie was an better "first whisky" and somewhat trained my taste buds to start venturing into others. And here I am a few years later sipping away at my Lagavulin.

A few weeks ago, i start my journey about whisky with glenfiddich 12! Really like this one.... compare with others i tried before occasionally, like JW BL or Cardhu.
The other day i notice dark chocolate in the finnish. That felt so good!!! :)
Now i just dont know with one to buy next.... i´m curious about a lot of whiskys i saw in Whiskey Vault!! LOL Damm, i need more money!! loool
Thank you and keep on the good work!!
Edit: Today, 5 or 10 min´s after drinking the glenfiddich 12, i smell the empty glass and it smells like dried figs... Its Christmas memories!! :)

Totally agree about the Glenfiddich 12 - it is a very good Speyside scotch that doesn't shine with anything unique apart from the cool bottle and good marketing. However their other expressions are really worthwhile, especially Glenfiddich 15 is something worth checking out.

Big question about aging; can you quick age it in a hot climate, for let’s say 2 years, and them carefully ship the casks to a colder climate and then finish out another 10 years there? What kind of affect would it have on the flavor and alcohol content? Does anyone do this?

First time I smelled it I was so surprised it smelled like flowers to me and it left a honey after taste. I'm so surprised I really liked a whisky. Guess I'm starting to enjoy whisky after all.

I like everything besides fruit i mean i eat fruit but if there is deserts custard baked goods breads or anything along those lines I will choose them 9 times out of 10 . what might you suggest? I'm not afraid of a $60-$100 bottle if its good . idont intend to share it lol

To anyone who hates or dislikes apples and pears, do not shy away from trying this. I was given a bottle of this whiskey a few days ago and the first thing I thought of when I smelled it was that it smelled like apples, pears, maybe a bit of melon. Reminds me a bit of apple cider. I hate apple cider. I don't mind eating apples every once in awhile but I'm not a huge fan.
The taste of this whiskey is still very good and it's not like it tastes exactly like apple juice so don't worry.

Cool so I have some whisk(e)y; how do I make sure that I store these properly?
Is it similar to wine where you would need to wet the cork every now and then to make sure that it does not dry out?
What would the high alcohol content do to the cork if it is always wet with whisk(e)y?
Logic also tells me to keep my bottles out of direct sunlight.
Keep up the cool vids guys.

So if you are aging a spirit in Texas for example, would it make more sense to use seasoned re-fill casks or puncheons since wood has such a dramatic impact?

Guys, my local liquor store recently put all their Glenfiddich whiskys on sale, including Glenfiddich 18 which is now under $100 thanks to the sale. I know you said price is based on supply and demand, not quality, so I was wondering if it’s worth taking advantage of this sale to get some Glenfiddich 18.

Just got this as my first scotch. I definitely get the apple/pear note on the nose/palette, but to it turns into a soapy kinda vibe. Like soap in the restroom of a public place like walmart or the hospital. I like the whisky, but kinda wish I would've gotten the glenlivet 12. I didn't see it until I was already paying. They had it hiding behind the counter. The glenfiddich is tasty even if not preferable. I'm satisfied, though I'll be going in a different direction next time. Ultimately I'm a beginner so take my assessment with a grain of salt. Cheers.

Also have you done/can you do Knockando 12. A slightly lesser known Speyside I'd be interested in your view of.

Glenfiddich 12 was my first experience with whisky, and I fell in love. Sure, I quickly wound up falling in love with Islay with Laphroaig 10, but I still do enjoy Glenfiddich 12. It seems it’s a little more expensive here at 50USD, but yet I’m not too mad at that price, because it is still good. Monkey Shoulder may be a bit better as a Speyside at 35USD, but I do like Glenfiddich 12.

You guys nailed it. The best way to describe that is simply "a damn fine scotch". Its not the best I've ever had, but I'll never be without a bottle.

I avoided trying this malt for a long time due to bad reviews. I had some a whisky tasting and it was really enjoyable, light, fruity and refreshing. Makes me think people like to hate on a popular classic just to appear discerning and refined. SMH

To add another point about aging, Scotch rarely uses new-make wood. Scotch uses refill bourbon, sherry, port, etc. casks. So Scotch whisky ages slower not just because of climate but because more so of how seasoned the oak is. I've had 21yr old Cragganmore from a refill hogshead (possibly even 3rd fill) and the wood presence was rather mild. It was still a spirit-driven experience but with a good amount of wood tannin on the finish. But a bourbon going 21 years in a cask? Flirting with disaster.

Would you consider aging your own whisk(e)y in a really small, 1-5 litter oak barrel a viable alternative against the "24-hour aging" methods? (mostly for a lot of us can't afford a regular-sized barrel)

Hey guys, im just getting into whiskeys and loving it. Im a beer guy for a long time (real beers, craft! not piss) and as a beer fan I would love to see a review on the Glenfiddich IPA Cask. Ive heard its nice, I have it, but I havent opened it yet. I want to try mre whiskeys before I open that one. Im a big peat guy, but i also like non peated or less peated whiskies. So far Glenfiddich 12, Lagavulin 16, Jura Prophecy, Laphroaig PX Cask have been down my throat. And Ive been wanting to learn more. So, if you can get our hands on a bottle of Glenfiddich IPA Cask, I would love your review!

Cristobal Gevert I second the IPA request as it’s $70 and I only have the Jamison IPA, cause ya, it’s $27. Doubt it’s that much better. I shall live vicariously through you magnificent bastards. Thanks

Can you do a comparison of this, vs 12 yr Glenlivet and Macallan, as varieties on entry level/price, available/accessible, and well marketed/“popular” Scotch?
