      A little trick that I've seen on a couple other ~20 min vids is to put witty banter while running their end card so that people stay to hear it while looking at your related links. I haven't found any research that's been done, but it probably increases click-rate and retention time. 19:12-19:25 would've been a great opportunity to include some funny banter from after filming when you were just chilling. Just my two cents, personally I watch all your vids anyway :P

    I've been drinking whisky occasionally for years, but never really thinking about it this much. Always simply "this is a 12 year, it'll be different, also expensive-er". Now suddenly I want to go back to all the whiskies I've had and try it again.
    The best part is how "human" this sounds, easy to understand, but with hard science explained well. It sounds like how my friends would explain things to me.

      If I can make some recommendations to ya my friend:
      Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch. Affordable, amazing, and a very sweet blended scotch.
      Highland Park Magnus. Another affordable, but still, very kickass single malt scotch. Smokey, without being overpowering.
      Jameson. A classic of Irish whiskies.
      Maker's Mark. Just a straight down home plate, simple bourbon.
      Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky. The Japanese here have made a real kickass whisky that I'd be proud to drink. Sweet, fruity, and damn delicious.
      And of course, good ol' Jack Daniels Old No. 7. A staple, and an American classic.
      For an expensive scotch, Ardbeg 20 year Single Malt Scotch. Aggressive and refined. Best to save this one for a very special occasion, lol.
      Good luck on your reignited whiskey journey my friend!

    The bit about smell being influenced by your brain reminded me of a session in Culinary School, where a woman from the Culinary Science department at NECI came in and provided us with clear plastic cups with totally clear water in them. She told us to first smell them, and all we could smell was incredibly strong lemonade. Almost like pure sugary lemon concentrate. Then she told us to drink it with our nose plugged. There was no flavor whatsoever. It was just water. Then we tasted it without our nose plugged, and it was like drinking lemonade. It was essentially a consomme of lemon water. It was incredible.

    Here I am a few weeks later drinking a Lagavulin 16 with a side of water feeling more interested in looking up where my drink was made and how instead of just downing it. Furthermore inevitably finding every definition of fortified wine and other terms that pop up I've never understood. This is a rabbit hole. To my pleasurable surprise, I notice Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec drinking this. Bonus!

      Well, you can still understand it as a wide-undertandeble appproach or metaphor to two different kinds of sensory perception - one which is detailed and analytical, and other that's integrative and wobbly. Yeah, it's not scientific at all in modern perspective, but most people still could have a very good idea of different perception modes through this.

    I love this series on whisky!! I've been drinking whisky for years, and found a lot of information I didn't know about. Thanks!!
    I was hoping that maybe one day there could be a "summary" type video with Brian and Jason pretending to be extremely wealthy type people sampling whisky, and going through all the lessons they learned.
    For details, people could resort to these great videos with Daniel, but a refresher video would be extremely appreciated!! Keep up the excellent work dudes! And as Brian would say, Sriracha!! :)

    there actually is no logical/artistic dichotomy between left brain and right brain.

    • @ModernRogue
      @ModernRogue  7 років тому +6

      I believe you're thinking of "brain-handedness," which has indeed been debunked: sciencebasedmedicine.org/left-brain-right-brain-myth/
      But it seems to be a fact that the different halves of the brain are not identical, and do not perform the same way on the same tasks:
      "It is certainly true that the brain is divided into two hemispheres, right and left. These hemispheres also carry out some different tasks. Specific cognitive abilities localize in one of three basic patterns. They can be bilateral or diffuse, so they do not localize to one hemisphere." (from the same article above)
      Meanwhile (and of special interest to Daniel's point), Broca's area generally is dominant in the left hemisphere only: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broca%27s_area
      TL;DR: Yes, there are differences in the hemispheres, and yes, different sides of the brain perform different tasks with differing ease.

    • @Leo-hk6qg
      @Leo-hk6qg 7 років тому +5

      Yeah, different parts of your brain obviously do different things but not in the way the guy in the video described it. And "Tickleshits" never said that the different halves of the brain were identical, he said that the difference between them isn't that one is logical and one is artistic.

    • @xMaverickFPS
      @xMaverickFPS 7 років тому +2

      i think you're both right. i didn't mean to imply that both sides were the exact same, but i do think i was thinking of "brain-handedness." i guess i got confused.
      interesting article though! found another one talking about it as well: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2395638/Are-right-brained-creative-left-brained-logical-Youre-claims-study-link-brain-sides-personality-nonsense.html

    • @AB-br2so
      @AB-br2so 7 років тому +3

      That is not what the guy in the video said. He told that when we smell we firstly use right hemisphere, but that is not true. So, the rest of his explanation is based on the wrong basis. Looks like some pseudoscience.

    Great video! The reason you have nostalgic feelings when you smell something is because the olfactory nerve, which is responsible for smell, runs very close to the part of the brain responsible for memory. Cheers
