The incantation that creates and eliminates the force field around the third key is from the movie "Excalibur", known as "the spell of making" by Merlin.
The movie is actually a tragic story about all the things Halliday regretted about his life. The 3 challenges are life lessons. Things he wished he had done differently and things that the person who finds his Easter Egg should learn along the way. The race that's so hard no one ever finishes symbolizes life. The video game challenge is about appreciating the gifts others have left for you. It's also about not rushing through life without enjoying it. It's not about winning it's about playing. And the final challenge is a test to prove that you cherish your friends and those closest to you. All lessons Wade learned in the end. Which is why Halliday gifted him the Egg.
4:02 - in the book, one of the main reasons why Oasis could exist in our time was because Holliday created a new algorithm that allowed to handle enormous amounts of players at the same time without crashing or lagging. Without that breakthrough - we are still pretty far from Oasis.
Well, what can handle tons of information at the same time? Theoretical Quantum Computers. If you get rich enough once the concept has fully formed, you could create quantum computer servers. By that time, I think internet speed would also have evolved.
This can be simillar to mesh servers that star citizen is trying to pull off with persistent objects in a world. They are already testing early iterations of it.
If Nikki loves the music, she needs to read the book because it has a built in soundtrack listing. Reading the book while playing the music at the appropriate moments makes it so amazing.
This book is incredible too. Highly recommend. And you're 100% right: This movie is FUN. It's what going to the movies is meant to be. Eat popcorn. Enjoy the film. (And, let Spielberg wow you.) Also, on the book cover there's a comment from someone who reviewed it who called the story, "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix." So it's cool that you made that connection without even knowing that.
incredible too? the movie pales in comparison to the book, at least the first one. the way I see it the whole competition was changed into something idiotic which no logical structure. I mean come on, it's a fucking race?! and then he wins by following some idiotic cryptic advice? imo spielberg butchered this one, especially when introducing needless shit like "the resistance".
@@danii7584 if you look at the movie as a companion piece that is "inspired by" rather than "adapted from" it solves a lot of your issues. Consider the whole Joust challenge wouldn't necessarily translate to screen, and using The Shining instead of Wargames appeals to a larger group of movie watchers. I get your criticisms, but for my own personal enjoyment, I simply watched for different reasons and looked for different things, I suppose.
@@howardbalaban7051 and if you keep your eyes closed then you see nothing wrong with the movie... it's not inspired by, it's an adaptation. the more you change, the shittier an adaptation it is. going from one medium to another necessitates change, sure, but anything beyond that is bullshit, usually ego of ppl that want to "make it their own". If you can enjoy it then you should, nothing wrong about that. doesn't mean it's a good adaptation though, only means it was enjoyable to you. objectively it can be classified as a bad adaptation. standalone it might be decent, but even in this regard I found it lacking, e.g. the whole resistance plot was a waste of time, leading nowhere. I guess I was too excited for this and had somewhat high expectations, but damn, I hated the movie right from the start.
@@danii7584 Therein lies the problem: expectations. We live in a world and an age when fan theories and fan casting and so on have taken on lives of their own. If you didn't like it, that's fine. Objectively speaking, the movie was done well enough to push cinema forward into the next age of film. Was the story great? Well, it was FUN, and it was everything a movie should be - an escape from reality (in every sense of the word). No problem if you didn't like it. You do you. I highly recommend that you read the book, the tests to get the keys are different and it is because of copyright, people or mentions of other movies could not be used, there are many more references from the 80s and 90s. That's why I recommend you read the book.
Ready Player One is like 70% pop culture references, 30% story, haha. And Ready Player Two (if you haven't read it) is like 85% references with 15% story. Movie is in development I think. I know a lot of people were upset with some of the choices to change some of the plot, but it works better this way as a movie. The one thing I didn't love is the change for the fate of one of the High Five.
I listened to the audio book high as fuck. Was an amazing experience. The book is way better than the movie but the movie is how I found the book. I also really liked the movie.
@@realsies9387 I'd hear of the book but never read it and forgot all about it until the movie came out. Now I have the audio book often on repeat in the Jeep because its such a great listen. I haven't finished the "Ready Player Two" yet.
It’s also a great book! The screenplay changed a lot of details from the book but some of it had to be changed for pacing in a movie. Spielberg is also a big fan and player of video games!
Book is so good!! I decided to read it after watching the movie figuring there would be more, similar to what you said w pacing.... There is a plethora of story left out, I genuinely loved reading that book so much!! 😁
Remember how the book began with him saying many movies, shows, comics have been made, but this is the real story. I look at the movie as one of those movies the character in the book is talking about.
The sequel, "Ready Player Two" is also a fun adventure. Maybe not as awesome as the first book but not many sequels ever equal the original. Fantastic reaction, Nikki & Steven!!!
The biggest complaint I heard about this movie was the one that made the least sense. That it was just a giant collection of fan service with all the cultural references. YES!!! That was the point! That you could go into the oasis and be any of these characters or experience them. How lame would the movie have been to say you could be anyone or anything and then not show all the things that everyone would want to do? Besides, if give the movie fantastic replay value to be able to find new details that you missed previous times.
The "evil music" is actually the intro for Godzilla's appearance in the early movies so it's fitting for it to be used to signal Mecha Godzilla arrival.
This is Spielberg at its best. Hope we get to see Ready Player Two sometime soon. There are so many opportunities how this can play out. I'd love to see some Elden Ring references for example.

Definitely read the book too, it’s got completely different tasks that weren’t going to translate well to screen. They worked with the author on the script for the screen. The nice thing is you can read the book and not be spoiled.
A lot of people complain that driving backwards in the race is a huge plot hole as its the FIRST thing any hunter would try, but to be fair, he said you had to go "as fast as we can, really put the pedal to the metal", all in, meaning youd have to risk zeroing out and losing EVERYTHING in a crash to get it to open. Its not airtight, but makes a little more sense why someone might not have opened it yet
The author was brought in to adapt the book (and this varies greatly from the book) and they managed to keep the spirit of the book and compress it for film. You should read the book, its awesome as well. I recommend the audiobook which is read by Will Wheaton.
I actually just re-watched this last week because it's a fun "whenever" movie. I originally saw it in theaters after being extremely hyped up. I read the book and...yes, books are almost always better, but that's because of the added detail they can add. For a book/movie adaptation this movie did a phenomenal overall job. It has some slight flaws -- some of the characters are a bit hollow and not fully fleshed out, but this movie is more about the world than the actual characters. It's a movie about finding an Easter Egg that involves countless Easter Eggs. What's not to love??
Neither Nikki nor Steve showed any reaction whatsoever to seeing the Iron Giant appear on-screen. Obviously, they haven't seen it! That needs to be the next movie they react to!
Just wanted to let you guys know I’ve been rewatching all your Game of Thrones videos and it’s getting me through the pain of the last season 🤣 your reactions reminded me of all the fantastic moments throughout the series
The book is stuffed with even more nostalgia and geekery. Several franchises they couldn't use were swapped with others they could use. Imagine having to act out every David Lightman scene in Wargames word for word. How many people ever heard of Zork?
"I'd rather not talk about my funeral." That reminds me of a joke Steven Wright told: "Last night, my girlfriend asked me if I ever wanted to know how long I would live. I told her, I think I'd rather not know. She said 'O.k., never mind, then.''
Such a great book!! And even though they changed a lot in the movie, it was still great! I highly suggest you read the book though, because it will still be fairly fresh. Fun fact, there is a planet in the Oasis that is nothing but schools. It is a starting point and it is free for everyone. Hallidayade sure education was available for everyone. Just one example of a small detail that adds more to the overall heartwarming story 😊
13:12 He got his last name by knowing his first name and that he just purchase the Boot Suit in the real world. He queried all recent purchases with persons named Wade. Wa! La!
In regards to the OASIS happening, it is possible. In fact, it’s because of the book of Ready Player One that inspired Palmer Lucky to create his first HMD, which in turn lead to the creation of Oculus. The OASIS is also possible because it’s a metaverse (which you’ve probably heard a lot about). Ernest Cline, the author of the book, was inspired by Second Life (which is a real life metaverse that’s existed since 2003 and was itself inspired by the Metaverse in the novel Snow Crash). Also the Rosebud that Wade references is a reference to Citizen Kane, which has been referenced in may works, including The Sims. Also the release handle being inside of the pod makes sense. If the building lost power or there was a fire, they’d want to make sure that those who are in their debtor’s prison are able to get out. Also, the Willy Wonka-ness of the story is intentional. Ernest Cline stated that the original novel of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory had influence on him, and Cline imagined the Egg Hunt as “What of Willy Wonka was a game programmer and his Golden Ticket contest was inside of his greatest game?” In fact, Gene Wilder, who played Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was approached to play the adult Halliday, but Wilder was retired from acting at the time he was offered the role. In fact, for trailers for the film, they used a rendering of the song “Pure Imagination”.
I really enjoyed your reaction! The book is a very fun read as well. If you love "The Shining", I would strongly suggest watching the director's cut of "Dr. Sleep". It's a sequel to "The Shining" and is great!
It´s fun you thought Aech gave you Vin Diesel-vibes. Because the big robot she was working on/using at the end is coming from the movie "The Iron Giant". And the person doing the voice of The Iron Giant is Vin Diesel 🙂

I'm 59 and about 4 years ago my son introduced me to VR. I was blown away at how much fun it was. I could go anywhere, stand on the top of a mountain and enjoy the beautiful view, go to a beach and enjoy the sunset. Walk along a street at night gazing at the stars. If you can't visit a lot of places, VR is nice. Gaming is a totally wild experience. I do have Oasis on VR and its fun. When you are in the middle of everything it is crazy. I love this movie and watch it often. Waiting for part 2!
I loved the soundtrack from the first song and all throughout!! Going to H.S. in the 80's ... so many references still register and some more pop up for the first time as well!! There are videos that just highlight all the Easter eggs to be found and you have to believe that some are still hidden! A very worthy re-watch!
I love this movie. There are so many levels to this. So many easter eggs. So much nostalgia. It even throws me back to my life in-game. Thanks Nikki & Steve, for being here to watch my favorite movies with me when I don't have anyone else to share them with.
Literally one of my favorite movies. The book was fantastic too! The music you guys loved so much is all Alan Silvestri, the same composer who worked on Back to the Future. That's why his music reminded you guys so much of that series.
The book is a great read. The 3 tasks are different (and better in my opinion) and the featured characters are different because there aren’t copyright issues. The audiobook read by Wil Wheaton is fun.
I loooove this movie! I watched it on theatres and everybody was screaming every time an Easter egg or character comes out! The funniest was when probably half of the crowd shouted: “It’s fucking Chucky!!” at the same time, so much fun and your reaction was like that!! 😃
I’m gonna go back and watch this reaction again and do a “DOOOOPE!!” Counter 🤣 this was a surprisingly good movie. The amount of detail and how well it was thought out when it was written is amazing.
I read the book about ten years ago, soon after it came out, and was SO anxious for the movie to come along. When it arrived, it was like hardly anybody knew it existed. I was telling everybody i knew to go see it, but it just didn’t make a very big splash… and I still don’t know why, because I think it’s great. I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it so much. It’s in my top three all time.
I was racing with the audiobook version of this book, I literally felt like I was going through everything with the main character, kept my attention from start to finish. I wonder if we'll ever get a VR game based around it. Would be so fun!
Ready player one was based on a book by Ernest Cline. Steven Spielberg read the book and made this movie because he could see this becoming our future, but also used it as a sandbox to drop all his past movie references in like Jurassic park, King Kong, etc. But the interesting thing is since the success of ready player one, Cline wrote a sequel “ready player Two”. I read it, it’s so much bigger than the first one and I’m very much hoping it gets made into a film. Hell I studied film at uni, I’ll help make it if Steven asks.
Its funny you mention Willy Wonka. One of the early trailers for this movie used an orchestral version of "Pure Imagination" (from the Willie Wonka movie) as the background music.

They are already testing early iterations of it.
chris roberts, is that you?
If Nikki loves the music, she needs to read the book because it has a built in soundtrack listing. Reading the book while playing the music at the appropriate moments makes it so amazing.
The thing she threw in the Godzilla eye was called a "madball" from back in the day. I had so much fun watching this with yall. Thanks.
This book is incredible too. Highly recommend.
And you're 100% right: This movie is FUN. It's what going to the movies is meant to be. Eat popcorn. Enjoy the film. (And, let Spielberg wow you.)
Also, on the book cover there's a comment from someone who reviewed it who called the story, "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix." So it's cool that you made that connection without even knowing that.
Book is ass. Remember this? Remember this?
incredible too? the movie pales in comparison to the book, at least the first one. the way I see it the whole competition was changed into something idiotic which no logical structure.
You do you.
(Now, switching topics, if you actually think Moneyball is a good baseball movie, then we'll have issues. Because as a baseball movie, it's horrendous.)
Pulling for Ultraman over a Gundam all day..... won't even bother to acknowledge the Iron Giant. Lol
I listened to the audio book high as fuck. Was an amazing experience. The book is way better than the movie but the movie is how I found the book. I also really liked the movie.
@@realsies9387 Awesome! Lol
@@realsies9387 I'd hear of the book but never read it and forgot all about it until the movie came out. Now I have the audio book often on repeat in the Jeep because its such a great listen. I haven't finished the "Ready Player Two" yet.
25:06 fun fact: the spell Artemis used to bring down the orb was the same Merlin used in the 1981 Excalibur movie.
Imagine how much the movie would cost if it included all the references from the book. That's why you see so many from Spielberg's own movies.
The sequel, "Ready Player Two" is also a fun adventure. Maybe not as awesome as the first book but not many sequels ever equal the original. Fantastic reaction, Nikki & Steven!!!
@@youreanidiot28 How does copyright work in that department? Does being the director give you certain rights to use your projects in other things?
One of the most underrated movies to recently release
Agree. I didn't think much of it when first announced but man, I watched it and was totally wrong.
I think people didn’t really like it because of the big differences with the book. I thought it was good though
w
The biggest complaint I heard about this movie was the one that made the least sense. That it was just a giant collection of fan service with all the cultural references. YES!!! That was the point! That you could go into the oasis and be any of these characters or experience them. How lame would the movie have been to say you could be anyone or anything and then not show all the things that everyone would want to do? Besides, if give the movie fantastic replay value to be able to find new details that you missed previous times.
The "evil music" is actually the intro for Godzilla's appearance in the early movies so it's fitting for it to be used to signal Mecha Godzilla arrival.
I wish one day a VR game could do this. But having 100s of companies to all agree to have their characters, items, etc in a game is highly unlikely.
Also the social commentary on how addicted we are on virtual entertainment ( and social media) and missing out on real life
This is Spielberg at its best. Hope we get to see Ready Player Two sometime soon. There are so many opportunities how this can play out. I'd love to see some Elden Ring references for example.
you can't be saying that man, Spielberg at its best? c'mon now, maybe for some other filmmaker but this is above average at best for Spielberg

they knew who his last name because they made the connection to the person with the clues he revealed,
1: he gave his first name
2: he told Artimis that he had a Boot Suit
3: they matched his first name with anyone that had recently bought a Boot Suit recently.
It´s Artemis, not "Artimis".

This is one of my favorite movies I saw in IMAX 3-D. The car race scene especially! And the The Shining blew my mind
Love how in ready player one, is total 80's and 90's lovefest. But can't argue, 80's rocked.
Definitely read the book too, it’s got completely different tasks that weren’t going to translate well to screen. They worked with the author on the script for the screen. The nice thing is you can read the book and not be spoiled.
well it would have translated to screen if it was a tv series

"Curator" gave him the Extra Life quarter, after Wade bet him "everything I have" that he was right. So that's what he got (to keep).
2:16 The boy wasn't just trying to tell his mom to get off the couch. The food on the stove had caught fire. 🔥
The giant robot from “The Iron Giant”, a most excellent movie worth your time.
it amused me to no end that that Steven had just said "He gives me Vin Diesel vibes"
Vin Diesel did the voice for The Iron Giant
Neither Nikki nor Steve showed any reaction whatsoever to seeing the Iron Giant appear on-screen. Obviously, they haven't seen it! That needs to be the next movie they react to!
I think I’ve seen this movie 20 times, I still see things in the background I missed it’s awesome
This is definitely a movie to own on DVD. It's so good. I own it on blu-ray

"I'd rather not talk about my funeral."
That reminds me of a joke Steven Wright told: "Last night, my girlfriend asked me if I ever wanted to know how long I would live. I told her, I think I'd rather not know. She said 'O.k., never mind, then.''
I feel bad for all the people whose work schedules only allow them to be in the Oasis on Tuesdays and Thursdays...

when he ask the creator "if you are dead what are you" i think that he found out a way of putting his own conciousness in there.
That's my assumption too
Such a great book!!
Wa! La!
I have seen this at least 10 times and still find something I missed. Great movie for children of the 80s.
I saw it in theaters and I lost it when I spotted the Lancer from Gear of War in the final battle (the gun with the chainsaw bayonet).
The actress who plays Samantha, Olivia Cooke, is actually going to come out soon in House of the Dragon. She is going to play Alicent Hightower who is the Cersi like character of the story

You did a beautiful job and we as the audience appreciate it ❤️
The book is a great read.

I am so glad I was able to watch this on 3D at the movie theater, I just couldn’t stop smiling that day
Had fun watching this movie when it came out, I enjoyed it glad that you guys are reacting to it
Ready player one was based on a book by Ernest Cline. Hell I studied film at uni, I’ll help make it if Steven asks.
oooh this is such a good movie, excited to see what you both think of it! (The book is better too, recommend it if you like the film)
Olivia Cooke (Samantha/Art3mis) is in House of the Dragon.
Its funny you mention Willy Wonka. One of the early trailers for this movie used an orchestral version of "Pure Imagination" (from the Willie Wonka movie) as the background music.

As someone who read the book, I can say the movie did it justice. It’s one of my favorite series just from the sheer amount of references in both the book and movie. You could come back to both of them multiple times and never come close to finding all the references!! Ernest Cline is an absolute master of the literary field and Steven Spielberg knew exactly how to implement his ideas to film!!
Echoing what others have said about the book. Totally recommended. Also would highly recommend the audiobook. Fantastically performed with all the detail of the written book

I liked this movie as a separate thing from the books. Like most adaptations, a lot is changed and removed. In the book, there is an entire part where he is hiding in the real world and is "arrested" on purpose and needs to escape the cooperation while gathering what he can on the computer he is allowed to use inside the facility without getting caught. She never gets arrested. He even has a whole thing about getting healthy and focusing more on his real-world life.
