One point to add is that the Oasis was way more than a game. A lot of people had jobs in the Oasis. There where whole planets filled with schools that kids attended classes on. It had its own currency that could buy real world items. So the whole world was very much tied to this other universe which is neat but also pretty volatile.

Only Spielberg could pull off a movie like this with all the references and the cutting edge of special effects. Back in '88 he was also one of the only producers that could've gotten Disney characters and Looney Toons together in the same movie. He's a legend for a reason. Great director. Love Oak's rant. I'm 44 and an introvert. My mom was against video game consoles, so I wasn't much of a gamer before these "new" phone games but... My sophomore year of high school I read something like 50 books over my summer vacation. When we got the internet my senior year, IRC chatrooms were a *huge* step up for me socially. I honestly learned how to socialize and even flirt and communicate online and that made my time in college infinitely better. I still prefer being online to being out and about, but I have a dog that gets me out of the house 😂 Honestly, if you have trouble making friends in person get a really really cute dog and walk them twice a day. You will quickly start to meet your neighbors 😂

So the only thing missing is the hub and a unified monetary system which would be detrimental to most gaming experiences since when you get high levelled in one game you would break the monetary scarcity of all the other connected games.... or you would balloon the prices to stop that making all of them super grindy....
If that unified money is just for cosmetics and curios then programs like Steam with it's Steam VR home have already made the Oasis hub... and it's just not as amazing with our level of tech as Ready Player One....

I absolutely fell for this movie for all of its nostalgia - starting with Jump and Hate Myself (for Loving You). My son has Autism and has a really hard time interacting with people face to face. I was walking by him room one day and heard him through the door talking. I knocked and went in asking who he was talking to. He was playing Among us and not only having full conversations, but joking, using his deductive reasoning, and even trying to effectively convince people he wasn't the bad guy when he was. I was shocked because I've very seldomly seen him talk to people that well or really seem to enjoy doing it. Video games can be a great way for people to interact if they have issues doing it irl and give them a chance to practice with less chance of being judged.

To answer to The Oak, about the fact that they live in Oasis, but also in the real world, this adaptation added a bit more "sugar" to the entire global situation. In original story, in the book, Oasis it's pretty much what the societies tries to do with the Metaverse and the virtual reality at the moment, or at least what they try to sell: a virtual world where you can do everything, even working or learning. In the book, Oasis is a way for a some people to escape from the reality, but also for a lot of people is, simply speaking, a medium. For example TONS of children go to school in Oasis. In that virtual world there is an entire planet, called Ludus, to serve as the primary establishment for public education within the simulation. It's an entire planet full of schools. Only schools, from primary school to high school. Tons of schools paste-copied, each one equal to the others, with milions of children from all around the world. Oasis is literally a medium to live, the same as it is our reality with the world wide web (internet) for all of us in the last 25-30 years, or with the invention of the cars and airplanes for transportations in the last 100-120 years. The entire world in the book is more crude, for example Aech, the protagonist's friend. In the book it's explained that that male nickname and avatar were chosen by her mother, because being a male (and not black) in Oasis (and in the real world too) would be much easier for her, to get a better life (at least in Oasis).
So, with such a giant importance in everyone life, you can also imagine that the I0I is way more brutal in the book. I'm not going to do any spoiler, but to make an example in the book the I0I has zero problems in entering another person's house in the real world and kill that person, while he is inside Oasis and has zero chance to defende himself. An easy-peasy way to kill other players who are searching for Halliday's Egg.

You should give the book a try, it's much better than the movie. There is a lot more story in the book that was straight up cut from the movie, them not teaming up is a major part of the book, which the movie immediately threw out. Wade's depression and isolation and the whole bit of being locked up at IOI is a lot more detailed.
@Answer there was no jaws or ET, in fact there was no actual Spielberg references in the movie, only things he was loosely connected to and not directly. The book has a lot of Spielberg references because of course it does because it's based on 80's nostalgia, but when Spielberg came on his rule was to not have any reference to his own work, which should give you a good indication of less of a media it is when you take out one of the major aspects of the story. Although some CGI people did sneak in a couple without Spielberg knowing.
They took out them not teaming up (major aspect of the story) and all the Spielberg references (another major aspect of the story. (Though this one might be a bit more understandable giving Spielberg directed the movie.) )

The movie was fun but it changed so much from the book that it was kind of a bummer in that regard. It would’ve been better if they had done it as a trilogy with each movie dedicated to each key. Like movie one introduce us to the world and gets us through the first key and gate, and maybe a little after. Second movie covers the middle with the second key/gate along with all Wade does after the first gate including going into IOI. Then third movie covers the final key and wraps up with the big battle and everything. Unfortunately I just think the studio wanted to take advantage of the hype around the book and get it out as fast as possible and capitalize on the nostalgia of all the easter egg appearances of other characters from other movie and game franchises. They knew it would be a hit but they didn’t really care as much about doing the story itself justice.

  • @CrippledMerc

I highly recommend the book because it’s got a lot more neat details and context that they cut out of the movie, along with a lot more references to classic songs, movies, and games. The movie also changed some fundamental things about the contest from the book because it would’ve been too long otherwise, but I can’t recommend the book enough. Through the book you really get to understand Halliday, Morrow and their relationship, along with how the Oasis came about and came to be what it is in present day, and you also learn a lot more about how IOI works. It’s not too long of a read either and the audiobook version is great and clocks in at right around 15.5 hours long, and it also includes a suggested playlist at the end with some great classic music that was referenced in the book.
Ernest Cline also has another great book/audiobook called Armada which is in a similar vein to this, lots of throwback references to the 80’s in a story about a young gamer guy on a crazy adventure to save the world, but unfortunately that one hasn’t seen a movie adaptation yet even though I think it would make an excellent and enjoyable film. Ready Player One and Armada are both top tier reads/listens and I’ve probably read/listened to both of them at least a dozen times each since they were released, and the second book Ready Player Two is pretty good as well but I don’t think it’s as good as the first. I still have one of the first edition copies of RPO and I have a first edition hardcover copy of Armada. Seriously, I know you guys aren’t the biggest book people but if you have the time to listen while you’re doing something else then I suggest throwing on the audiobook for RPO and giving it a go because you won’t regret it, especially you Oak! Then after RPO I’d check out Armada.

Fun fact, I always had a PC since it became available to me in 1992 and that was my main gaming platform, then I started discovering various consoles like Playstation, Gameboy etc, but I already started emulating some like SNES or Atari on the PC and then I realized these things called emulators are actually taken from consoles. As a kid, I was hyped to know more and here I am, mainly a PC player, but I tried most consoles in real life (in our local community which put together retro gaming corners for people even with old arcade machines, more obscure consoles etc) so I have overall experiences from all of these and I love gaming until this day and it will always be part of my life. I found my good friends and my gf through gaming and anime (especially Pokémon) communities, because they are awesome and I wouldn't give my gaming lifestyle up ever ^^
