I just realized that "No man is a failure who has friends" is from It's a Wonderful Life :) I have watched so many reactions to it this holiday season :)
The reason Wade 'falls in love' with Art3mis so quickly is that she's basically an e-celebrity as a well known Twitch streamer (and I think UA-camr?). Wade's been infatuated with her for a long time and he's fanboying pretty hard. You guys should definitely watch the Shining! It's too bad you haven't seen it, RP1 did an amazing job recreating the locations from the film. I read the RP1 novel and have to say I really love both the movie and book. They are very different, but have the same adventurous heart.
The book came out around the 2010's and it's not set in the 90's because we didn't have this kind of VR in the 90's. I imagine the author chose roughly 30 years in the future because of Back to the Future but I'm just guessing (the dude does own a DeLorean after all). The creator of the Oasis (who died of old age) grew up in the 80's because he was a basic GenX/Xennial and that's why the characters all study 80's pop culture, to find his easter eggs. That's the entire premise of the book and why it's saturated with 80's pop culture, so it most definitely didn't take place in the 90's.
What you guys thought was elvish / Lord of the Rings was actually the spell that Merlin and Morgana use in the movie Excalibur. A very old but well done film around Arthurian legend.
Well, geez it's not THAT OLD. Excalibur is my favorite movie, I've watched it hundreds of times. Anál nathrach, orth' bháis's bethad, do chél dénmha. The Charm of Making, an incantation repeatedly uttered by both Merlin and Morgana, is in an Old Gaelic dialect that translates to "Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making."
The split between Halliday and Morrow is partially based on the split between the creators of Doom, Carmack and Romero. Carmack was the socially awkward genius programmer and Romero was the designer and front man. Romero was forced out because Carmack felt that he let the fame go to his head to the point that it was interfering with his design work, and other creative differences. In the decades since, Carmack has indicated in various interviews that he somewhat regrets the way he forced Romero out. In a fun "life imitates art" kind of way, Carmack would later go on to be a key player in the founding of Oculus. The book Masters of Doom covers the topic, and it's a really interesting read for anyone interested in VG history.
Honestly, when you think about how far technology has come since 2000, to now, I’d say yeah it’s possible for something like this to exist by the 2040s
I remember watching this in the theater and as soon as they said it was an Atari game I was like I bet it's Adventure with the first secret that reveals the name of the creator because Atari didn't want to give any of the programmers credit. If you haven't watch any VR style anime one of the best with multiple stories is Sword Art Online. Different stories center around different game worlds based on the same VR system.
Jane mentioned SAO near the start of the video, getting it confused with another recommendation. Yeah, great anime series that got too much hate from those that hated anime becoming a bit watered down for more mass appeal at the time. It has it's cheap moments villain-wise but generally a great watch with plenty of variety; especially GunGale Online spin-off. FYI a very underrated anime called Accel World was from the same writer set about 20 years after SAO showing how VR tech developed; shame that one never got more than one season and a bad film (they skipped too much for the film to make sense).
I saw the movie first and then read the book. Not sure which I like more but the movie is nothing like the book. Both are great in their own ways but there are so many big differences between them. This is still one of my favorite movies! Definitely a fun watch
@@xNathyRibeiroWould you do that if you found the Mastersword Artifact and could lose it? Awesome, you know battletoads. No one seems to have heard of them. Great to hear at least one other person. Ya, you have to watch this movie a few times to see new ones you didn't notice before
The Holy Handgrenade at 17:50 is from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If you haven't seen it, you should. It's a classic that was made on a shoestring budget.
Back in the earliest days of home computers, when they only had text and no graphics, people would draw a TIE Fighter with the letters I-O-I. I've never heard it confirmed, but I feel in my heart that this must have contributed to the name of the evil company. ^^
the reason why the iron giant did not have his weapons was simply because it was not a canon character, but was built entirely by H. it was not an item that could be bought within the oasis. also, the reason that most people do not have direct neural interface is that it would be quite expensive, and would possibly cause some brain damage if the equipment was faulty or if it was used for too long. there were a few main ways to control your character; 1. gloves and headset 2. omni-directional treadmill with headset 3. full body suit 4. the chair that the bad guy was using
This and Free Guy are two of my favorite gamer/VR themed movies. Easter Eggs galore!! And sure enough, the grand prize was an Easter Egg. I love it! Side note: I highly recommend reacting to Back To The Future.
27:18 - That's Hannah John-Kamen. Some people know her from her appearances in the TV series Black Mirror. But a lot of sci-fi fans know her as the character of Dutch in the TV series Killjoys (2015 -2019).
When watching a science fiction movie wherein they give you a date, don't count from the year you're watching it; count from the year it was released. Ready Player One was released in 2017 so the date means it was 28 years in the future. Then extrapolate 28 years into from our present. That gives you a better sense of how far off that future is. In this case, 2052.
Having the game's haptics being connected directly to your brain is something they explore heavily in the book's sequel and is the cause of every problem they have in that book
0:33 yeah, the more you do it the more you get used to it. sometimes it takes time to develop your VR legs so to speak. I used to get nauseous too but now I don’t even feel it. Or you could sit on the couch until you get used to it more. Also some games have controls that you could do to make it less nauseous
Movie is fun…but totally different from the book. The book is darker, richer, tons and tons more Easter eggs too!! Do the audio book…narrated by Will Wheaton
Every time I listen to the audiobook I always slightly crack up when I get to the part where Wil Wheaton reads that the fictional version of himself is the vice-president of the OASIS User Council. But yeah, the book is much better as there is no way Ernest Cline (the books author) and Zak Penn could write a 1 to 1 direct translation of the book and still make it seem somewhat believable without it potentially making it look really goofy and taking the audience attention out of the movie, even with Spielberg directing (I certainly would not want to see a zombie king play an arcade game in an underground tomb).

The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is a reference to the Monty Python movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 😂 Rosebud is a reference to the Orson Welles movie Citizen Kane. Rosebud was the red sled he rode on as a child. 😅 The activation spell for the Orb of Osuvox is the spell Morgan Le Fay learned from Merlin The Enchanter from the movie Excalibur. Known as the Charm of Making. 😮 The throwing weapon is the Glaive from the sci-fi/fantasy movie Krull. 😮
Seeing kaneda's bike from Akira in this movie blew my mind because I read the book also and the race wasn't in the movie like this at all. Definitely love this channel. You two are so nice and fun to watch. Please watch Akira on an upcoming reaction! it's a cinematic classic that revolutionized animation
I HIGHLY suggest if you guys liked this movie go read the book, and the sequel "Ready Player Two". So much more detail and better imo. I believe there is still plans to make the sequel into a movie as well.
"How can they do this, aren't there police?" My understanding is that they bought politicians, so instead of going to a conventional jail, you get held at the corporation where your sentence is how much time you spend searching for the keys for the company. They also bought police officers and stuff so they can sneak around and not get nailed for doing underhanded shit.

Loved this! And I knee Justin would be trying to catch all the references 😂😂 in his element watching this! I've watched this loads of times trying to catch more n more different things.
I loved watching this movie in theaters, it was so much fun and it's definitely rewatchable because you want to try to get all of the references. I do like the overall message that reality is more important than virtual, because it's true. I love doing things online don't get me wrong, but doing things in reality is more fulfilling if you ask me. If your job requires doing things online, completely understand of course.
I'm actually on a Spielberg filmography "binge" since June. I have six more of his movies to go. I started with Duel back in June 2023. I started watching Bridge of Spies today. I need to finish it so I can then watch BFG, The Post, Ready Player One, West Side Story, and finally The Fabelmans. And by the way, a lot of his movies I've never seen before including Ready Player One. So, this will my first time watching it.
The things in the book would not have translated well to screen. The books writer actually helped with the script to make it more “movie “workable. The great thing is both works are really good and neither one spoils the other.
15:30 I think that jingle was supposed to be "Party time! Excellent!" and that would mean you mixed up Bill and Ted with Wayne and Garth of Wayne's World, very similar personalities.
Sure, direct neural link would be more efficient, buuuut, the tech needs to be easily manufactured AND relatively affordable for as many people as possible.
I love that movie, it reminds me the time I invited my best friends to Melbourne for Zero Latency. Helps me to imagine big extraordinary things awaiting us in the future.

Apple took a scene from Ready Player One for their Vision Pro introduction. BTW, the HMD will be available on February 2, 2024.
The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is a reference to the Monty Python movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 😂
Rosebud is a reference to the Orson Welles movie Citizen Kane. Rosebud was the red sled he rode on as a child. 😅
The activation spell for the Orb of Osuvox is the spell Morgan Le Fay learned from Merlin The Enchanter from the movie Excalibur. Known as the Charm of Making. 😮
The throwing weapon is the Glaive from the sci-fi/fantasy movie Krull.
You should read Ready Player Two, if you haven't. It's a good book. I've seen stuff about them making the movie.
I like how you're guesses for the actors are always like 70-80% looks like them but it's totally not them haha I love it
To answer your question, the novel doesn’t take place in the 90s. It takes place a year prior from the movie, so that would be 2044.
I HIGHLY suggest if you guys liked this movie go read the book, and the sequel "Ready Player Two". So much more detail and better imo. I believe there is still plans to make the sequel into a movie as well.
"How can they do this, aren't there police?"
My understanding is that they bought politicians, so instead of going to a conventional jail, you get held at the corporation where your sentence is how much time you spend searching for the keys for the company. They also bought police officers and stuff so they can sneak around and not get nailed for doing underhanded shit.
The holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is a Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference
the bad guy's avatar is a cgi version of himself
The activation for the orb is a spell from the Excaliber. Anal nethrac de ooth das dey thud dothyell denenvay
Rosebud is from Citizen Kane
the girl's gun in the club is the pulse rifle from Aliens
Kiri is played by Perdita Weeks from Magnum PI
I think most people don't realize the race for the first key is happening in the world of Grand Theft Auto 3 or 4. That's Liberty City. You start on the star shaped island with a statue of Liberty on it.
56:50 - close your eyes and listen to this part again....
20:34 🎶 Halliday! I sing that joke too!
56:55 out of context is wild lol. Anyways, hope y'all are doing well.
VR makes me nauseous too, all I had to do was walk down a hallway and it was enough for me.
A lot of people miss that the High Five is also something he was trying to give everyone but they kept denying him
Jane looked perpetually confused. Justin knew all the references. Its mostly gaming pop-culture so she was SO lost lmao.
I know its like pop culture overload. Bit that race scene had so many movie cars and all he notices is the DeLorean and Batmobile
The incantation for the orb is from the movie Excalibur.
He said , Those Nerds Are Happy ha ha Damn I'm High LOL
I love that movie, it reminds me the time I invited my best friends to Melbourne for Zero Latency. Helps me to imagine big extraordinary things awaiting us in the future.
"The Holy Handgrenade of Antioch, a counting learning tool" 😁
Wanna know something cool, If you press play on the song Another One Bites the Dust when the firework Explodes in this scene 8:58 , It just fits way too well, is it like the scene was made for this song! Is perfect!
Willie Wonka meets The Matrix and a bunch of pop culture! A great movie and even better book.
