  • In Duncan Edwards, I believe I have the greatest footballer in the world,” said Sir Matt Busby in 1957.
Duncan Edwards played against Pele and Franz Beckenbauer. He played with George Best, Denis Law and England's World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore. But to Charlton, Edwards was king.

Duncen went on to play in four matches of the successful 1958 World Cup qualifying campaign, although of course, he would never see the tournament itself, and players of the time considered that his game simply did not have a weakness.

I saw Duncan Edwards play. He was a giant of the game and a truly fine young man. I remember seeing the newspaper headline bulletin board outside our local newsagents. It read 'Duncan Edwards Dies'. I was 13 years old and I stood there and cried my eyes out. As I write this comment the tears are once again rolling down my face.
We will never see the likes of him again. Thanks for the memories and for the pleasure you gave in a life cut tragically short. RIP Duncan.

John you are blessed, you are one of the lucky few that witnessed possibly the best footballer in the world and you can remember. I remember the Munich air disaster and the grief that affected the country. The story would be of interest to anyone of today’s supporters no matter which football team you support. It’s a true tale of disaster, heroism (Harry Gregg) hospitalisation and eventual survival (Matt Busby and Bobby Charlton) and tragic fatalities including the young and extremely talented player Duncan Edwards. Thankyou so much.

Duncan Edwards was a brilliant footballer with so much potential. Such a sad loss. How sad too that he was their only child to reach adulthood. Those poor parents. I'm an Arsenal fan from the 50's and was an autograph hunter back in those days. Never knew Duncan to say 'No' to any of the adoring London fans who used to go to Euston and get the signatures of all the northern teams like United, Liverpool, City, Burnley, Blackburn, Everton, Blackpool et al. He was not much older than us kids seeking him out and he would often get us in a queue and then sign our Football Monthlies, autograph books, photos, programmes, scrapbooks and football annuals. When we played in the street we always fantasized about being top players of the day, I always wanted to be Duncan; I'm not ashamed to say I cried when the news came about 2 weeks after the crash that Duncan had succumbed to his injuries. There is quite a famous photo of Stan Matthews, Billy Wright and Duncan training at Highbury running round the red ochre at the pitch side, both Matthews and Wright are legends of the game, but Duncan was a super legend revered and respected by not only Man United fans, but the rest of football. By the way, he was built like the proverbial outhouse!

Just before last Christmas I noticed a biography on him and bought it for my brother-in-law who really enjoyed it so this video has given me an insight into the great player he was and the tragic event that took the lives of so many of the Man U team. Thanks Alan for another great video ⚽️

In a book about the Busby Babes I read a comment that Duncan Edwards was once stopped by a police officer when he was on his way home from a home game; he didn't have a light on his bike. Far different from Rashford making a habit of crashing ultra-expensive cars.

Duncan had died years before I was born but his memory will forever remain. My grandfather spoke in glowing terms about him as he watched him every week during the 1950's. There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that he would have been United and England's greatest ever player had he survived and that United would have won many more European Cups, League Championships and FA Cups than they have. I'm equally certain that England would have probably won the world cup in 1962 and 1970 if Edwards had survived and been fit and healthy. Big Dunc would definitely have been England Captain as he was a born leader.
Thank you for this video. I have been to see his statue in Dudley but I will be back to visit his grave and to pay my respects to the great man. You were the best ever English footballer. God bless you Duncan ❤

I was a police Sergeant at Dudley Police station between 1974 and 1979 when my duties I moved away from the town, the station was closed down some years ago. There wasn't a day or a week went by when a member of the public would call into the station or ask an officer walking the town centre where Duncan Edwards grave was. All officers could give the location of Duncan's grave off by heart.

Hi Alan, that was quick after i mentioned him to you. I could have popped over and come with you to the grave.I was a child when it happened and my granddad (who was a footballer before WW1) was devastated. Only time i saw him cry. I remember the pics of the plane on all the newspapers. Another famous person born in my area was Madeline Carroll the highest paid actress of her time, she achieved this in the USA. She is buried in Spain. She was born in Herbert St, West Bromwich. My granddad was born in Herbert St. She did well. Great video as always Alan. ❤

Hello, Lynne what's a pity I didn't know I thank you very much for telling me there were a few people who mentioned him about the same time. That's very interesting I've not heard of that actress at all but I think it's a little bit too far from me to go to Spain and let you are paying for the tickets :-) all the best Alan

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep She was in the 39 steps. Quite a character it seems from her story on You Tube. Next time I go to West Brom. I'll go and see if there's a plaque at the house, I did hear there was at one time. My ancestors all lived in that area around Herbert St. Older viewers will remember her old films. Really enjoyed Duncan's video. He's still talked about here in the Black Country. I was more interested in Madeline's birth place as I heard about her in my childhood but I'll send you the cash to get you to Spain when I get a good win on the Premium Bonds. 😂

@@Lynne572There was a reference to Madeline outside a building named The Public, New St, which is now a sixth form college. I don’t know it it’s still there.
There is also a bust of Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy behind the building. He was born at Sandwell Hospital.

It's been a long time since I've watched Soccer(well, Football), I learn about new people every time I watch your Channel. Duncan Edwards looked like he would've been a great Footballer had he lived, super Legend. Another UA-camr from the U.K. by the name of Grave Interest(Lee) also visited Mr. Edward's grave(this was 3 or 4 years ago, I haven't seen the video yet but will soon). I stumbled upon his Channel a few days ago, so far so good. All in all, another instant classic in the books. It would be cool if you did a collaboration with Grave Days(Darren) or Unusual Things(Paul), I would definitely watch the video(s). Nicely done Alan, much respect from the Western U.S. 👍🏽😎👍🏽

@@MotorHomeBeepBeepI did a double-check on Lee's Channel(Grave Interest), it wasn't Duncan Edwards' grave he visited 3 or 4 years ago. It was the grave of Sir Matt Busby(I'm guessing he was the Founder of the Busby Babes, I'll check out that video soon), Lee also visited the grave of a Busby Babe by the name of Geoff Bent. I'll check out that video soon as well, just wanted to give you a quick update on that. Would be cool if Lee visited Duncan Edwards' grave like you did recently, all the best.
