  • Peter Ham formed a local rock group called The Panthers circa 1961. This group would undergo several name and line-up changes before it became The Iveys in 1965. In 1968, The Iveys came to the attention of Mal Evans (The Beatles' personal assistant) and were eventually signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label after approval from all four Beatles, who were reportedly impressed by the band's songwriting abilities. The Iveys changed their name to Badfinger with the single release of "Come and Get It", a composition written by Paul McCartney that became a worldwide top-ten hit.

One of the saddest stories in music along with the 3rd-Feb-59. Made worse by two of them passing away.

I've always loved Badfinger, and always been deeply saddened at what happened to Peter Ham, and later, Tom Evans, who also committed suicide. Sometimes, deeply sensitive people cannot cope with an often brutal world. The manager Polley was an absolute disgrace. It's such a shame that Apple folded, taking away McCartney's input into Badfinger, which was immense. I've seen an interview in which McCartney talks about what an immense talent Ham was, and I got the feeling that he would have intervened had he known what was happening. A sad and tragic end to a brilliant musician, singer-songwriter. Without You must truly be one of the greatest songs ever written.
Thank you for this video showing Ham's grave and for your thoughtful words.

Always fascinating to see where so many famous faces are laid to rest. Have you considered looking for the grave of former world speedway champion Peter Craven, who was killed in a track crash in Edinburgh in 1963 - the only world champion rider to ever lose his life. He's buried in West Derby cemetery in Liverpool

Pete was a beautiful soul and deserves being remembered. Your video is touching as I had only seen still images prior and didn't know about the extra engraved photos at the foot of the gravestone. Greetings Alan,
Another superb VLOG, I remember Bad Finger but was not aware of their history or Peter’s sad demise. I was 18 in 1975 and now coming up to 67 wonder what he could have achieved had he taken a different path. The older we get the more reflective and sentimental. Having dealt with those who chose to taken their own lives I am torn between their despair and state of mind but anger for those loved ones left behind and those of us left to in some cases to literally pick up the pieces. On a more positive note thanks for the story. Just about to leave the beautiful New Forest and travel back home. Hope you are enjoying your travels 👍

Hi CFP I believe it's irrationa to die l because of the pressure. Logically if a person could stand back most people I think would do nothing to harm myself but they have succumbed to the pressure because of youth and sensitivity. It's very easy to say that when older with less pressure I was born in June 1958 similar age to you. I now realize this is never a utopia in life the best is now before it's too late. Enjoy your travels I am ...I'll see you again I hope.

Any chance you could have a look and fo something on them? I'm in Australia however come from Scotland originally and was brought up with groupes like them..

Fantastic songwriter, guitarist and vocalist… his death was too much for his band mate Tom Evans.
Evans actually was collecting some royalties for “ Without You”, he even states it in an interview where he says “ it has kept me in pockets”.
Millions were tied up in escrow and he was being sued by others very sad.
He just had and couldn’t take it anymore and killed himself 8 years after Pete Ham.

I worked with the bass player from The Panthers. He told me he thinks Peter 'gave up' because he was determined to be a pro muso all his life, he was dead serious about it. When Warner brothers went for them after Polley took the money, Peter thought he would never work again.

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep As you probably know, John, Peter's brother, had a music shop on Mansel Street in Swansea. I went in there when i started work, mid 80s... I was looking to buy an SG, asked John if he had any. he said he didn't, but would I like to try one he had, it had been his brothers... I didn't have a clue who his brother was at the time. I said no, i want to buy one, not try one. ... I later found out it was the SG the Beatles had given to Peter. It was used on Revolver and The white album.... one of life's regrets... oops
