A few years ago, I was visiting London and decided to pay my respects to an old friend who'd passed away some 10 years earlier. We took the tube to Brompton Cemetery, a "Royal Parks" cemetery and walked a few quick blocks. It was a lot like what you show --a lot of overgrowth, tumbled headstones, instances of beauty and peace. Lots of military heroes, poets, writers, artists, wives, and children. The sculptures were beautiful, the epitaphs often hauting. Unfortunately, I had no idea where my friend was buried, but could only go on instinct. So I kept walking toward the back, hoping to find an area where there might more recent graves. Amazingly, I just went on a hunch and kept going until finally... amazingly, I found him. All he had was a simple wooden cross. But other friends over the years had stopped by, and hung trinkets and photos of him on the cross. I was awfully glad I went. It was memorable, and touching.
Amazing that you were able to find him, on a hunch, no less. Almost as if he was guiding you.

I live near there and can confirm it’s such a lovely cemetery, although not looked after very well.

I have grown up not far from this cemetery and no matter how many times I visit I get the same feelings. Truly a beautiful and historical place.

It is - so why don't they keep it up ...because it will just continue to get worse especially with the moist weather there! It will eventually get so overgrown - no one will enjoy it . . . that's sad...

Technically the souls aren’t in the ground anymore...they either go to Heaven to be with God or to Hell without God...but it’s the idea of the disturbed graves that bothers loved ones. Their gravestones are also a part of keeping or tracing history.
I visited a tiny churchyard in western London. There I saw tombstones of children who had died in the "Great Fire of London" in 1666, and others from the year 1140. Nearly a thousand years ago.
1740 maybe. You didn't see anything that said 1140, because they were using Roman numerals then.
Only 8 people are recorded dying in the great fire of London.

I thought the USA had old & beautiful cemeteries but this one takes the prize. What a beautiful, beautiful cemetery. I can't get over the incredible artwork & care initially given to each stone along with an extensive detailed story about that person. What a beautiful tribute that the families gave to their loved ones. It's so disrespectful that cemeteries this beautiful could be left to nature & vandals.

cemetery owners should be required to fund a trust for perpetual care - a trust which they don't control so they cannot loot it. This is a common story for private cemeteries and mausoleums over the years. They are "for profit" institutions.
For anyone not familiar with a mausoleum, exposed caskets are not normal, they are usually sealed behind a stone plate. A series of unseen channels and vents allow drainage of any liquid byproducts of disintegration or putrification process while keeping the air fresh.

@@SW-oy5zw I don't know about these particular circumstances, but, yes, some cemetery owners collected perpetual care fees and spent them rather than invested them to put toward the expenses of perpetual care.
Sometimes it's a simpler explanation: the cemetery exists longer than its founders. A cemetery is an asset. It's passed on to the next generation when its owner dies ... what if the next generation simply has no interest in tending a cemetery just because they inherited it? I think that has happened a lot, too.
Thanks I was wondering about that. There have been some disastrous horrible leaking mausoleums in a Melbourne cemetery in recent years.
It's difficult to imagine a trust that could be expected to generate income on the timescale of centuries - there are so many financial upheavals and changes in regulations/taxes/etc so I just don't know how you could do it with confidence.
The ivy everywhere just adds to the magical look of this wonderful cemetery
We're looking at an archeological dig site 1000 years in the future. It's beautiful, I'd love to walk through there. So peaceful.
Hey Chris, welcome to England! I've been to Highgate many times over the years... So glad you included Wombwell's sleeping lion - it has always been a favourite. Regarding the vandalism, in the 50s/60s, The Egyptian Avenue was featured in horror movies, and ghost stories on TV, including Hammer's world famous DRACULA movies, with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing... It went on to become a bit of a magnet for kids and new-age / occult gatherings on Halloween... and the legend that real vampyres were buried at Highgate was born.
That’s really too bad that films caused people to vandalize this beautiful cemetery. It really makes me wonder how they were raised with no teachings of respect.

Oh, I enjoyed the Hammer films when I was a teenager and did not know where they were filmed . This would have never compelled me to visit Highgate so I could deface it! I am really sorry to hear that this happened. There have always been extremists around and their actions tend to ruin things for everyone.

Nature and all its beauty. I think this is the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever seen. The ivy and tree roots hugging the headstones make it just hauntingly beautiful. Thank you so much for allowing us to experience this.

Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond Virginia over looking the James name after King James is a must see when visiting Richmond. I hope to visit the Highgate at some point in the Future.

Well those plants not being care for and restricted are part of the destruction. This place needs restoration.
We have the same problem with cemeteries here in America. Granted, England is much more ancient but greed and disrespect has no national boundaries. I believe the modern cremation industry has been helped by exposing cemeteries for what they are, the idea of permanent resting in a beautiful setting depends on perpetual trust arrangements to care for the grounds. Once a few generations pass, families forget about their ancestors. Spreading ashes is more economical and makes more realistic sense.
I think the fact that we will all be returned to nature, to earth, resonates with how the cemetery is in it’s now natural form.
Our bodies will return back to dust after our souls take their flight.

My grandmother served for the RAF during WW2, she met a handsome young Canadian Soldier and the rest is history lol she came to Canada as a war bride and veteran , I been to England in 1996 to visit my nana’s family and can’t wait to go back now that I’m older and have a passion for history! 🇨🇦🇬🇧🌺
I’m totally all about cemetery walks and reading the oldest stones. Just makes you wonder what these people were like when they were here on earth. I’m not alone here while being a cemetery enthusiast because I see all the comments of people enjoying these videos. I’d love to walk this place for days just to see every part of it. Thank you for this video and I’m going to see if there are more as I just stumbled across this one. I’m your girl when visiting any older cemetery and I really enjoyed it but what a shame that vandals felt the need to desecrate these burial grounds. Shame on them. I’d love to help restore this cement too. It would be fascinating but no end to the work needed here.
Give yourself a whole day and you can see pretty much all of it both east and west.

Glad I’m not alone! My small town has two small cemeteries with lots of decorated veterans, I take my children and we talk to them - thank them for their time on this earth no matter what they did while alive!
Me too, besides thinking about who they might had been and what was going on in history when they were living, i think the beauty is looking at all the art work on the stones

Despite the neglect and vandalism...I still regard Highgate as a Peaceful, Warm, Sacred and Loving Place. All reclaimed by nature....May the Souls rest in Peace.... Somehow I hope that the vandals etc will have feelings of guilt...and re-consider and never repeat their destructive actions.

Absolutely Beautiful !!! Being a huge fan of Rod Stewart I know he is from Highgate, I believe his mom and dad are in this cemetery, he also worked here as a gravedigger for a short time before he became famous.

So much history and very much sad & haunting, didn't know Jean Simmons was buried there in Highgate Cemetery, I have visited a cemetery on Xmas night to visit the past on members in the family vault, it was so serene & I could feel the spirits of the dead moving around. It was sad, BUT absolutely unforgettable experience. You have done a sad, beautiful & respectful doco of the cemetery, well done *****!!
It's a completely different style from the graveyard in my country, but it's very beautiful here.
When I visit the graveyard, I sometimes feel relieved of stress and relaxed. Is there anyone who feels the same as me?
I go to my local cemetery when im stressed or under pressure. Its so very calm and peaceful. I always leave feeling more relaxed and at ease ❤
I also always find peace and shoulders come down when I visit graveyards.

I can't imagine a cemetery being abandoned. Such a huge amount of history and the fact millions of people have ancestors buried there. A GoFundMe would be helpful to hire maintenance and security. We have some very old cemeteries in our city, and one of the oldest has a monthly chapter of individuals who come to the cemetery to clean it up. It's quite a task but well worth it.

Its about the cost, for a while I was the treasurer of our local village church. It's a famous place and dates back to Saxon times. The church had several tombs which are grade 2 listed which meant they had to be restored and maintained. One of my jobs was to try to track down descendants in order to get them to pay for it. Very few were able or inclined to do that so the cost fell to the church. Interesting neighbouring village with the same issue traced a descendant to a now wealthy American family who happily paid up.

I can’t believe there was any room left for those newer burials like George Michaels. So cool you’re spending a month over there. Can’t wait for all the goodness ⭐️
There are spaces. George bought a triple plot when his mum died. You can inter more than three in the plot I think. It’s just a case of each burial being on top of one other but at the depth required by law, so his other sister could still be buried in the sane plot though I doubt his dad will as he is remarried and lives in Greece.
There are quite a few spaces left but you can only buy them if you want to bury someone already dead or if you have a terminal illness. They prices are quite high for a plot. I last visited George before his stone went into place but I knew which actual plot he was buried in (which side of his mum) as I know a family member. I must go back soon. I’d like to go back before I leave the country to live but I’ve a feeling that due to time I may not get back there this year so I may go back when I visit the U.K.

That’s an incredible cemetery, absolutely stunning. Whimsical and majestic, it’s like a story book.
You have to remember the time frame this cemetery was founded, and was being advertised. Back then, chaperones were considered critical; and a girl's reputation could be in a make or break situation. Unless you had a lot of money, where would you take a girl you were "courting " to be alone? ( assuming she snuck out somehow, lol). You couldn't just be hanging out in public together. The girl would be seen alone with a man and people would talk; so, they would meet and go for walks in the graveyard. In novels of that period, Victorian and Edwardian, it is not uncommon to read about a man and a woman strolling through the cemetery. It was safe, well maintained, and you had some measure of privacy. That's one of the reasons people went there.
Wow, just wow !!! No doubt the most beautiful cemetery / graveyard I've ever seen !!! Perhaps it's the overcrowded graves stacked in on top of one another, the crowded markers, and the variety of artistic style in the gravestones and crypts. The fact that it's so overgrown by ivy and trees makes it feel like a surreal and enchanted place. My folks were grave diggers and cemetery care takers for generations, as kids we grew up next to two huge graveyards that were wonderful places to play, explore and contemplate life and death. Highgate would have been magic to explore as a child.
Hi Chris, I have seen a couple of people's tours of HG, they are rather sanitized. Yours is by far the best one I've seen. Side note: Jean Simmons (actress), was in the 1991 Revival of Dan Curtis's Dark Shadows, which aired on NBC. She played: Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the role Joan Bennett originated in the 1966-1971 DS. It is sickening to me that people have little respect for the dead. I hope they begin taking care of this beautiful cemetery again.

I spent a few weeks in London in the early 1980's on a Troop trip from my Station in Germany ...
Being a lover of history , my wife and I rode the Tubes and walked to many smaller cemetaries in and around London ( I wore out a pair of boots on this trip )!
One grave in particular sticks in my mind as one of the most unusual I've ever seen , tucked into a London suburb cemetary and it belonged to the famous English explorer Richard Burton .
He and his wife were in a replica of a large tent and and campsite ! The tomb had metal stairs at the back that led to a window above that revealed the interior with all the accoutrements of travel and life abroad .
We spent an entire hour having lunch inside this beautiful Cemetary and its history and Monuments to life lived .
One of my best memories of London .

A temporary area of storage for caskets with remains is referred to as a “Receiving Vault.” They were used when a big mausoleum or large memorial was being built to receive their remains, then they would be interred. Also, they were used in the instance that a pandemic killed so many people the grave diggers couldn’t keep up. So, remains would rest there until they were interred. My uncle died up north in February and the ground was so frozen they couldn’t bury him yet. He rested in the receiving chapel area until the ground thawed.
So sorry for your loss of your Uncle. Bless. I live in Canada and i guess we have these similar temporary receiving places for winter months, i never knew of this , thank you for sharing . May your Uncle rest gently.
My grandfather died in Michigan, on the USA, during a winter in suburban Detroit during the 1970s. The ground was too frozen to dig a grave, so they placed his casket in a holding shed with other caskets until the spring. Once the ground was soft enough, they buried him. It’s the same cemetery that Jay Sebring was buried a few years earlier following his murder by the Manson family in 1969.
@@michelehood8837 thank s for the information I appreciate it and I shouldcoy I have a cousin who died when COVID hit they couldn’t bury her for safety reasons. Her body had to be in cold storage at the funeral home for nearly a year before she had a proper funeral

Thanks for doing this video. I visited Highgate (both sides) years ago, and we weren't allowed to wander in Highgate West; you had to take the tour to get in. So you are fortunate to have that opportunity. We were told that it was abandoned around the end of WWII, and since families couldn't bear to think of death after the war, they stopped coming to the cemetery to clean up their loved ones' graves. It may not be a haunted place, but I was haunted by it for days afterwards. Looking forward to more from you in England.
What a beautiful cemetery. When I was in Iceland, our Air B&B was across from an old cemetary. The vintage would be about the same as this one. Each day we saw adults, with groups of teens, who would cut grass and trim up the plants to keep it looking nice. I'm not sure if they were Scouts or a day camp, but it was heartwarming to see these kids doing their part. I like that they are connecting the current generation with the older ones.

How fleeting our lives are! I can't help think of the Feb. morning graveside service for my mother about 25 years ago and how sorrowful people were. I had several old school chums come to it; people I hadn't seen since childhood It seemed like such a profound moment yet, in time, I imagine her grave and all those of my parent's friends who decided to buy adjoining plots in a sentimental moment (they were all products of the Great Depression and WWII), will join the ranks of Highgate when anyone w/o some notoriety and celebrity will just be names and ivy covered granite and marble. Oh well, life is for the living, right? Thank you for this shared visit.

Those memorials over the graves had to have cost a fortune. I'm saddened that people don't keep places like this cleaned up and give it more respect. This is sad!
i was thinking the same thing, i know some of the vines and stuff are pretty but why are the graves not cleared of the overgrowth , i would think that whoever runs the cemetery , it would be their responsibility . all the cemeteries i have been to that i have loved ones and friends buried at, the cemetery takes care of the grounds .

It is looked after and clean. If you listen to the video it was abandoned for around 10 years in the 1970's therefore it has not been abandoned for over 40 years.
It is looked after by the Highgate Cemetey Trust. They run tours of the cemetry which pays for the upkeep, I have been on the tour twice.
It is a very clean and very looked after cemetry...that's why somebody as high profile as George Michael was buried there 6 years ago.
It is overgrown because its nature taking its course and there are lots of different wildlife that live there...also there is a very rare breed of spider that live in some of the tombs. It would be wrong of the trust to destroy all of that by cutting away the overgrow
@@lorettarowell8486 there is so much wildlife that live in the cemetry that cutting away the overgrowth would be wrong. That is the stance of the Trust who run the cemetry. A place that was created for the dead has become the home for so much life. Why take that away just for tourists?

Hi Chris, great see you again. Chris, my ancestors lived in England from around 800AD to 1834. They were Vikings who landed in or around what is now known as Durham on East Coast of England. My last name is patronymic and means, son of watchful, I can trace my ancestors back to 1540, in Whaley, England, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII. From there they moved Southeast to Little Bolton within Manchester, England in the 1700s. My Great-great-great grandfather was a Millwright for wealthy Cotton mill owner who owned 5 story industrial cotton mills southeast of Manchester. Near the end of their time in England they became debt slaves in towns called Bugsworth, and Hayfield. In Bugswoth there was, and is a early canal, and the regents of the multi story cotton mill my ancestor worked as a millwright. Chris I know England pretty well, and her is a brief list of things you might look into. Malmesbury Abbey where King Athelstan was laid to rest. He Wrote the Masonic Constitution in 927, and was the grandson of King Alfred the Great who saved England from the viking hoards. Next would be the Ness of Broadgar, on the Orkney Islands. I was a a place of incredible knowledge, and religious Temples, and Henges in the early Bronze Age. It is a spectacular place that is beautiful and literal magic. I went to Highgate years ago on one of my many trips to London, And they don't call it Highgate for naught! You have to climb a VERY high hill to get there, just made the 4 p.m. tour by the skin of my teeth! Fascinating place! I still have a black stone I took from there as a momento!
I agree with you. High gate is beautiful. I hope they preserve some of the wild growth. It gives the place a peaceful atmosphere. Almost like it's sheltered, a safe place in the city. If I lived in London this would be a favorite place to visit to think and rest. Even as you walked us around I was feel a sense of calm. I also feel like the overgrowth makes it feel alive (strange for a cemetery I know). It's beautiful in it's manmade design but mother nature has added her own mark to make it exquisite. I'd be happy to be buried there. I miss old cemeteries like these. The US has too many cookie cutter commercial cemeteries that all look alike.

Thanks Chris, that's really interesting to see. My parents travelled there not long ago to find the grave of a great-great-great ancestor that had been almost completely reclaimed by nature. Hope the weather, the traffic and the people treat you graciously.
It's a stunning place full of history and I love how it's over grown in places adds to the mystery and atmosphere, beautiful .

I had my breath taken away when you showed the Egyptian Avenue and mausoleums. So gorgeous. Reminded me, thought, not of Egyptian architecture but of an abandoned palace in Indian jungle. If you read this comment and find time to answer, could you tell me, please, how did you get inside the catacombs? Was the door just open? I tried to find out with the friends of the cemetery last year, and they told me it wasn't possible to go there. However, I don't believe it's true (they just stopped the waling tours there). These family vaults remind me of ancient Roman burials, including beneath the Vatican in the ruins that were covered when St. Peter's was constructed.

Wow, amazing place. I grew up in London in the 1970's, a bad time in the UK, industrial unrest, three day week, power cuts and a general lack of public money. A lot of dereliction and neglect.

North Carolina had these tiny really old cemeteries I oddly kept coming across.
A couple were little civil war family plots. One was a block away....and nobody had ever noticed it.
My favorite was in Beaufort North Carolina by this old presvretar...or Lutheran ...huge old church with graves from 1600s.
On my original Facebook I had taken pictures.
In fact I had several old cemeteries...but anyways I find cemeteries so peaceful and I mean.haunted but happily so.

Unbelievably beautiful and peaceful. So sad it is abandoned and vandalized. I can’t for the life of me understand why people want to vandalize these places.
No longer vandalised. The West Cemetery is now preserved as an official nature reserve and the cemetery is kept secure by volunteers.
Same thing here in Australia, I had my Great Grandfathers historical grave re done, expensive, years ago. To think though these emormous gead stones and buildings are not necessary, as it takes alot of room and money to maintain. A plaque on a wall would be a good idea and the deceased put into the soil directly but in a hygenic way as per is permissable. Once we go we go. Ashes to Ashes, Genesis, from dust YOU came and to dust YOU SHALL return. Cant see that this idea here will stay simply not working. Thanks for post.

Fascinating and sad at the same time. No excuse for abandoning these cemeteries. My late wife is in a cemetery in Sioux Falls that is financed through a Trust fund and managed by a Board of Directors.
Wow, hauntingly beautiful. I live only 35 miles from London and have been all over the City so many times, yet never been to Highgate. Definitely planning a visit now. I also hope they don't clear all the vegetation, I think it's so lovely. Thanks for this fascinating video.

I was just there at Highgate a few weeks ago with my family as we traveled from the US. We took a guided tour and we were completely fascinated with the amazing cemetery features and history. You did a great job illustrating much of what we learned there. Thanks for posting the video. It brought back good memories of our recent trip.
You should totally visit somewhere like Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester. It also has some pretty old and historic graves.
Saw HighGate in 2018, most beautiful cemetery I’m sure I’ll ever see. The history, the lives and stories of the people here are just amazing! So many well known famous people. A must see, and take the tour, if you love cemeteries.
Hey Chris, I had to let you know this was a terrific video, extremely informative, beautifully videoed, and narrated. You my man are very good at what you do. Just to let you know I am currently finishing up a 1,300 page lexicon on Americas Gods, yes gods and goddesses from Egypt, Canaan, Tuscany, Greece, Rome, and Northern Europe. America's history is not what people have assumed for 240 years.

Thank you for being respectful in your filming and commentary. A very good tour of a portion of the place - 37 acres in total! There are still relatives visiting graves here, some UA-camrs forget this and try to sensationalise elements of the history and spout nonsense to attract attention. I hope that any future plans don't result in the loss of many mature trees, in order to "open up the view". It's lovely to feel enclosed in a woodland setting, and the view across the City will now be full of high rise blocks that have taken over the skyline. There has to be selective thinning of Trees for safety reasons, and to maintain access, but please let's save as many as possible!

This honestly is such a interesting place that I would love to hang out and explore and just experience the unique work, the overgrown nature over the man made structures is a awesome vibe. I don't know why I love it so much. Not everywhere, but for specific places it's just such a cool look to see nature sprawling out over man made locations. In sorta a eerie way, then add on that it's this elaborate cemetery and catacombs/crypts
