Man I'm excited to hear this baby roar. Thanks for rocking the shirt Ralph. Pulled my engine and I'm about to go through it just for shits and giggles
I can tell ya she sounds sweet!! Thanks for sending it to me. She probably needs a going over. Good luck and contact me if you need any help with anything. Thanks for commenting!
Finally some smooth sailing after all the fun with the cam cover. Cant wait for the next episode.
Yes we are almost there now. Stay tuned for next week. Thanks for commenting.
Another great one Ralph. When you pulled out the torque wrench with the extension and quoted a torque value less than what the spec calls out, I tried to remember the equation in my head, and then there it was on the screen. Most people wouldn't show that. Thanks for the reminder.
You are welcome. Just trying to help others out the best I can. Small detail but very important. Thanks for commenting.
Another great video,, I can almost hear it run,, see you this week, Thanks for the shout out Ralph 😁
Thanks Gus .... see ya soon. Thanks for commenting. Appreciated.
Just wanted to say thanks for your prompt reply to my question. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. I am currently doing a top end and repaint of a 1980 FXB Sturgis. So thanks again.

Thanks Ed. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting.
Ralph,
Awesome, job sir! Really was a one step forward two steps behind project. Damn, if you didn’t have to put together and take apart because of BS parts for the old the old bikes! You must have the patience of Jones! On a sidebar, I received my hand made tool from you and it’s appreciated! Thanks Ralph
I learned along time ago not to let it get to you. stuff happens. Glad you got the tool. Thanks for letting me know, and commneting.
Looks like a job well done .
Thanks appreciated. Thanks for commenting.
Ralph-I'm pretty sure my '79 FXEF 80ci has too much slop in rockers and Really appreciate you explaining your method of repair.
That can make it pretty ticky in the top end. Glad you found the video useful. My hope, for the channel, is to help others with their old bikes and the comments are showing it is. Pretty happy about that! Thanks for commenting. Appreciated!
When did you go to AMI, i went in 1982. There were a few Canadians in my class, maybe i know you, we look about the same age. Kurt was a cool guy.
I went in 1989. Kurt was a great teacher, except for his Fridays "Pop Quiz Kiddies". Great guy though. Felt very fortunate to have been there when he was teaching. I wanted to learn anout the old stuff and he taught us that well. I went during Race week, Bike week and a bit of spring break. Good times!! Came home and been running the shop ever since. Thanks for commentimg and making me rememeber some great times down there!!
Can’t wait to hear to the shovel run! You’ve done an outstanding job Ralph. Thank you very much for the kind worlds as well! Choppers rule!
She sound pretty sweet Sean, quite as a church mouse. Thanks. You are more than welcome my friend. Thanks for commenting. Appreciated!
Nice work 👍
Have you ever used wave washers on the rocker shafts ? They act as springs & eliminate the side play throughout the heat range. I've had good luck with them.
@@kurtfoulke5130 I have tried the wave washers in the past. I my experience, they broke up into pieces. Shims are the proper way to go, in my opinion anyway. We all have different experiences. Keeps it interesting. Thanks for the comment,
New subscriber here I found out about your channel by HCC. He has some good content as well.

Great video, Ralph. The attention to detail is fantastic.
Thank you for the kind words. Quality work takes time. Thanks for commenting.
Don't forget to retorque everything after a few heat cycles!
I always do. Its a must with these old shovels. Thanks for commenting.
Years ago I'd have customers ask why my shovel rebuild were more expensive than other models, my answer has always been, ' the only way to do a cheap rebuild is use less or cheaper parts, and do less labor', remember the newest shovel is over 40 years old!
I agree. Cutting corners only comes back to bite you later. These are old engines and need special care. Thanks for the comment.
Great video have watched since the beginning. What oil do you use in shovels. Oh and hello from south Texas.
Hello down there in Texas! I use Lucas oils. 20W50 for breakin and some running but l like too use Luca staight 50, when I can get it. Thanks for the question and comment!
Another great video thanks. I installed an S&S top end on my shovel and it’s got about 250 miles on it and this is the second time I’ve had to retorque head bolts. Base have been ok. Is that wrench you showed ground down around the edges to fit and what type of wrench do you use. Thank you sir
Nice topend! Ya can't beat S&S. The one I use for the base nuts is ground down a bit to fit close to the cylinders. The one for the heads is a Snapon 2" dogbone type 12 point. I have a varity of homemade ones for geting at the head bolts, especially under the Carb area. Thanks for the question and commenting.
Ok great thanks 👍🏻
have you used the spirals
Not sure what you mean by spirals? Thanks for commenting.
