      The point is that “all-seasons” don’t perform as well as summer tires in summer weather and also don’t perform as well as winter tires in snow. You should do yourselves a favour and buy a set of summer tires and a set of winter tires. It’s just better. (PS, I live in Quebec, Canada where snow tires are a requirement and really glad that they are)

    • @LA-st6dq
      @LA-st6dq 3 роки тому +63

      @@matteocavallin8775 All Seasons are well developed these days, much improved than the first times when they just established. Of course All Seasons aren't as good as summer tires for the summer and winter tires for the winter, they are in a balance of both actually are even closer towards and almost regular winter tires because the winter season offers the dangerous road conditions and challenges. I'm driving all-seasons on cars for 10 years on various cars Ford SUV's, BMW, Audi, Ford Sedans... been in deep snow and ski resorts without problems ever.
      We had enough of exhanging tires on 2-4 cars each season and buying 8 tires per car when needed isn't very amusing. One set of all seasons and you are good for at least 3-4 years depending on your driving and tire pressure. Sure, you can go to your dealership or workshop to exchange the tires but they don't do it for free too. ;)
      All-Seasons are very very good developed and more than good enough for regions where the winters aren't to heavy, living in high alpine and mountainous regions it is recommended to better use regular winters because of the heights and steeps.
      It really depends on where you live and really live under conditions where true winter tires are better required or not.
      Technically you even could drive on winters all year, because there's no summer tires requirement but the softer rubber increases wear, lower mileage and control can be wacky in emergancy cases because of the softer profile in hot summer. conditions. All-Seasons are great for people living in regions where the winters don't become so snow heavy usually or with snow the conditions are managable but also warmer countries/states. I'm living in northern germany and the winters are constantly changing, there is snow and sometimes heavy snow but the recent yearsit didn't stay long sadly, but as said I'm going to skiing trips yearly and going to the Mid-West Germany Winterberg you already enter Winter Wonderland and I had no problems driving there. Although going to Austria's and Switzerland ski resorts you might prefer true winters.

    Little trick I learned back in the day for getting out of that situation you described: Rear wheel drive vehicle with an open diff, one rear wheel on good traction surface, other rear wheel on ice or mud or other very low traction surface and you're stopped and can't get moving... Pull up the handbrake about half way, just enough for it to bite on both rear wheels, then gently drive forward. The rear wheel braking force from the handbrake will slow down the freely spinning wheel, and send enough power to the wheel with traction to get you out of the predicament, so you can get both rear wheels back on a good surface. 😉This has saved my bacon a few times over the years.

We got about 10 inches of snow, and that car has 6 inch clearance... luckily the roads were mostly cleared. My driveway was shoveled halfway through the snow but was not clear, with a couple of places I should have shoveled before I tried to leave. Luckily I kept my bumpers. Lesson learned!

    I'd argue that driving a RWD car in the snow on snow tires is actually safer because you don't get a false sense of confidence like all the people with AWD on all seasons! Sure, they can get going, but they can't stop or turn like they can accelerate! RWD in the winter is also really good for honing your car control skills at relatively low speeds! I drove my Miata through the last three winters up here in New England and I'm a much better driver for it

      The amount of people I've spoken to who think they don't need winter tires because they have awd, as if stopping your vehicle isn't important, is mind blowing to me, especially being in Canada. Meanwhile, I'm blowing past all these awd, all season equipped crossovers with my small hatchbacks and sports cars because my tires allow me to have actual grip and drive closer to the speed limit since I'm confident in my vehicles ability to stop 🤷🏽‍♂️.

    honestly, I love RWD in the snow. Some AWD cars and SUVs are extremely numb to drive, and are so capable in the snow that you have no idea how bad the roads are until you are going way to fast. With RWD, you know exactly what the roads are like and if you begin to understeer, you just apply more throttle. There is something so special about driving RWD in the snow, as long as you know what you are doing and understand that it will not be the best thing in the world.

      Well, they have uses. My all seasons perform best in rainy conditions and it's raining all the time here. In the winter we usually have you guessed it, rainy conditions. Now we've had the most snow we had in probably a decade. It manages pretty okay to be honest, but I didn't really buy them for snow. Now the most important point, if I buy two sets it costs more than the value of the car😅.
      I drive a Fiat Punto fwd shitbox lol, it's much fairer game than with summer tires anyhow and I wasn't gonna switch anyhow.
      Just don't treat them like actual winter tires. They're not. We get a lot of ice roads due to rain freezing on the ground, but at that point only spikes will save you (and they're illegal lol). 😂

      You know what all seasons are good for? Learning the limits, cause unless it's all dry they suck the same no matter the conditions. They just don't surprise me with sudden lack of grip, which is cool.

    If you don't mind adding an extra 30% time to any trip in the winter, then most def a RWD with winters is just fine :) Uncompilable with AWD with winter tires but, if it's your only choice. Anything on frozen highway speeds, RWD is just a nightmare to lane change over ice.

    Quick tip for open diff rwd: you can use your handbrake ( old lever style) as a manual tc to get you out of one wheel slip situations. Just apply a bit of brake, you dont need too much and the power will be distributed a little more evenly. My driveway always ice on winter when there is snow and until now, I didnt got stuck one time, just be patient and dont forget about winter tyres. XD

    Drove my 30 year old Lexus LS400 which is RWD in the snow recently. The car would start to lose control if I applied more throttle than it could grab onto the road with, so its easy as long as you don't use too much throttle

  • @Honeypot-x9s
    @Honeypot-x9s 3 роки тому +3

    Another pro tip.. start out in a higher gear, this reduces torque so actually be easier to accelerate in the snow without spinning the wheels and this specially true if you have undefeatable traction control where off isn’t really off (most modern vehicles). using higher gears actually means less slip on leaving so less chance that traction control cuts in at worst time. If nothing else it also increases margin of error allowing increased pedal travel to break free which is great specially if learning how to drive on slippery conditions.
    As for shifting up and down in the snow manually (paddles or sequential) shifting up is actually safer than shifting down in a car with RWD and an LSD, shifting down to use gear box and engine as a brake can result In you car going sideways, in FWD less of an issue, AWD depends on biasing, FWD biased AWD is fine however RWD biased AWD can slide out sideways. Shifting up reduces torque so less chance of breaking free unless gun it or are already at edge of grip so if start to break free just lift off a bit while maintaining throttle. Honestly, 2 ways of driving I recommend.. either use auto mode on gearbox, it is pretty good not perfect but pretty good about working it all out and holding gears.. or pick 1 gear and stick with it entire trip.. something not too high to make it impossible to climb a hill but something that isn’t low enough to just spin wheels at tap of throttle, for me 3rd gear is perfect for severe snowy roads, I can get up most hills apart from steepest ones (in PA) I dont run out of gearing until about 50MPH in 3rd so 35-40MPH which is about as fast or faster than most traffic out in severe snow so 3rd is perfect..

    I would also add that everyone should drive to an empty parking lot and check how well your car stops starts and turns. Do this the first snow of the year because your car can change over a year and we don't always remember how it handles as well. By testing yourself and your car you will be more aware of how to handle a bad situation. I own a 2011 Cadillac CTS4 (4 stands for AWD), it is a heavy car that without AWD is rear-wheel drive this means that my car will have more power going to the rear (trust me on this) and if the car would have been front-wheel drive normally the reverse applies. Knowing your car is key so mess around try stopping after making a fast turn and stop in a straight line while counting. Check your tires or have a place like Discount Tire do this for you and I would go as far as to say have a mechanic go through and make sure all is fine. If you have a brake that kind of sticks you will know it in the snow much more than in the summer as an example. Finally, you might be a great driver but others are not so watch plan and drive for the weather.

I once had an FWD Alfa try and pull the same stunt, following me to the highest parking spot on a ski slope - only for the guy to get stuck.
    But other than that, finding an empty parking spot (do note where the kerbs are, or you're going to have to straighten wheels lol), and just holding the DCT button for 4 seconds, and you let the magic happen.

It took me so many tries sliding a bit sideways on all four wheels, but eventually I got the clutch out just smooth enough to stop the wheels from spinning and barely got myself out. Hydraulic clutches make it harder than it should, but it’s still a million times better than a computer controlled clutch.
