I recently went through a similar process. I used to daily my 87 944 but the maintenance and lack of low down torque made it a similarly stressful daily. Makes a great weekend car though! Would love to see more of your 3.2!

Love the M3...started watching your channel because of it. I believe it was the winter driving videos. I was obviously hesitant of getting a RWD car due to living in Eastern PA. But...nonetheless I always wanted an E92. One day!
Great video. While I am disappointed that the e92 is going away, it is a smart move. A 100k mile V8 German performance car is going to be expensive and frustrating to run daily while adding so many miles. Not to mention the RWD in Massachusetts. I have a 91k mile 2009 e92 M3 and while I absolutely love it it is not my daily driver. Good luck with the Civic Si, I’ve heard they’re great cars. A fun and dead reliable 30 mpg car with a warranty sounds perfect (although I’d probably try to talk you into a CPO Golf R, M240i or S3).
@@TedwardDrives Hyundai Kona N for a daily really peaks my interest especially after driving my 94k E92 M3 daily. I just find it hard after i drive the M3 to say i want anything else as it is useable here in California other than running cost.
F32 335i get 32 mpg highway. Civic is a good car, but a tin box on the road in comparison. Very noisy and tiring on the highway. If I were in a collision, much prefer to be in an E92.
I need to do better. My daily driver hasn't changed since I brought it new. 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R 6-speed manual. 17 years later, the paint is gone and the dash is cracked, but my life hasn't changed since it came off the lot. Congrats on the Si. It should go a long time and open up some new journeys!
Looking forward to seeing the new Si! I have a 22 EXL hatchback and I love it. Daily commute requires the automatic but I know you will love the manual!
Best Car ! Best Bmw engine noise along with the S85 on M5 & M6’s Just pure driving enjoyment without having an annoyingly harsh ride experience. My favorite car. Planning on buying one as soon as I find the perfect daily. Can’t daily it here in Greece since gas is 1,7€ / Litter , such a same.
These cars are definitely a labor of love. I have 107k on my '08 sedan, and luckily I haven't had to do anything major yet... but I only bought the car at 100k. Maintaining a BMW is like painting a bridge. By the time you're finished it's time to start all over again. Also you probably know this, but I'm pretty sure the temperature sensor on the dash only show's the oil temp and not the water temp. I've had the heater in my car cranking full blast when the needle hasn't even moved yet.
I sold my E92 M3 three years ago, as my daily driver after a year. It was too big of a car size for me(felt not at home) and bad mpg with the power that I rarely get to use from living inside the city. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with your issues. Did not miss it at all. Happy to be in an E46 zhp dd.
Man this video honestly could not have been better timed because after dealing with these issues for over a year now with my 2008 S4, I know how frustrating it can be to have an issue that can't simply be fixed by replacing a part. With electrical issues, there can so much trouble shooting involved and the scary think is that you may never figure out what the actual issue is. I am glad everything worked out for you and you were able to fix all your little annoyances with your vehicle.
A few years ago I was tossing up between an E90 and an IS F (needed 4 doors). Went with the IS F. So far the only thing that has given up is a headlight bulb. Can't beat it for a daily.
Talking about things we're gonna do before it's in our driveway? I just put an order in for a Mustang Mach e that's gonna be my daily driver (replacing a 98 Mountaineer as I suddenly found myself with a much longer commute.) Pretty much similar reasoning, too old too inefficient, kept good care of it over the years but won't miss having to visit the gas station ever again.
I don’t own an M3, and no BMW for that matter but for what it worth, when I was in the passenger side of a dedicated E90 M3 drift car (with standard interior though), I asked the driver (a pro drifter in the national drifting championship) if he knows how reliable are these cars and he said something along the lines of: « Our retired drift car (another E90 M3) has been through tenths of thousands kilometers of drifting (and the car was retired because it was a high mileage example, something like >200000 km), and it had no major mechanical failure during that time (I don’t think he mentioned the electrical though). », I must add it was very well taken care of (like professionally and very regularly) because of the abuse it was going through. So in conclusion, it’s a really tough car if you take really good care of it (and obviously spend a lot of money 😬)!
I spent over a year on my search, looking for the newest/lowest mileage example with my desired specs. I ended up buying a '13 with 28k miles 3 years ago. It now has 45k on it and I haven't had one single issue. The car has been perfect... so far.
I parted ways with my E92 for the same reason. It was at 136K and it was starting to show its age. It was also starting to be impractical for me needs, I took it on road trips often and the fuel economy could be better and i needed 4 doors. I traded it in for a VW Golf and its not a bad replacement as i actually get to use all the hp and i spend half on fuel.
I have an 06 Subaru wrx wagon as my daily! (02 Boxster s as the fun stuff), the Subbi has been great so far and a very fun and balanced daily! While remaining practical being a wagon, whole point being daily’s can still be fun!
my e92 m3 has also been dealing with a handful of electrical issues. Wheel speed sensors, starter, comfort access, and O2 sensors have all failed in the past 6 months. With the car in storage its issues sit in the back of my mind all day, which has caused stress. I forgot all of the problems at 8k RPM though 😂
Really good video to watch before buying one especially now while the prices are so inflated and climbing. make sure you are prepared to deal with what comes with owning one of these before you drop the amount of money just required to buy one. It looks good on paper but living with one isn’t for everyone. Amazing car though.
Oil dipstick, alternator , negative battery sensor(the one that monitors charging and battery temps called IBS) and electric coolant sensor run on a separate bus, called BSD which is a serial data bus(Bit-Serial-Data), meaning that, whenever one of these 4 devices break, none of them work anymore. I had the same on my N52 BMW, and it turned out also that alternator was bad on BSD interface, it charged 14v flat, when normally it varies from 14.8 to 13.4v depending on battery status, DME demands, etc. Once the BSD goes bad, it just charges like a raw alternator and oil level stops working, also coolant temps will not show or show invalid data. Once I replaced the diode bridge (didn't replace the whole thing) everything returned to normal including oil sensor. Other common fault is IBS sensor going bad , breaking the BSD interface. Most people just unplug it from the battery terminal so alternator would work like a "normal" one. PS: not everyday it happens to see a M car with no lights on the dash, congrats on that !
Oh fuck yeah! I want to say that this is why I've been looking at E46 330ci's recently because its more of known mechanical issues vs the e9x platform's weird electrical issues. I was going to say that an E46 or something else as a side piece and keep this for the collector thing, but I respect that you're choosing to sell it instead. No point keeping a car if you're not going to drive it! Or it would be a great track car haha.
As a BMW fanatic and owner I certainly agree with you on the maintenance, but man do I love driving them ! I would certainly keep the E92 and turn it into a track car. You have put lots of $$ and sweat stress on her, might as well keep her and distress at the track! :)
On my ‘09 Jetta (127k miles). For over a year, I had issues with gearbox shifting. I thought it was the gearbox going out but I found out a month ago it was only a MAP sensor throwing off the shifting points of the gearbox. A check engine light never appeared once. Only through my scan tool I was able to find the fault existed. It was a intermittent fault. I was running my head around rings thinking it was solenoids, valve body or gearbox as a whole. Glad it was something small.
The Honda sounds like a really smart plan for a daily car. I've never thought of high performance cars like M3s or M5s as true daily cars/20 thousand miles a year. Definitely a good alternate car to have in your back pocket when you get bored of your average, bland daily lol
I had to get rid of my 2011 VW SportWagen for the same reason. I loved everything about it as a DD but it was costing me too much time and money to keep it running properly. Now I have an order in for a Corolla hatchback 6MT and I'm pumped for it
@@grantmills4184 I've had my eye on em since they debuted. Unfortunately the manual ones are such a hot commodity all the dealers near me mark them up to 30k+ it's insane, so I ordered one. I'll get it by summer...I think lol

I drive a BMW M2 from 2017 only problem I had was that the cylinder 5 misfired and turned off at 295KMH, I shat my pants... especially because driving 30KM back to campus at 85kmh on unrestricted autobahn is also quite scary. Luckily new spark plugs fixed it, went one step colder on them too, considering I'm running stage 1 anyways :)
I have an '11 335is with the DCT and I wonder if my driveshaft was the terrible metallic clunking sound I heard when I dropped from 7th to 3rd and floored it on the freeway. I thought I had grenaded the transmission but over a year later it's still alive so that couldn't have been it. As a Minnesotan I can say you'll have lots of fun in the snow with that thing, just be sure to get some good snow tires, summer tires will not work, at all, seriously.
I think you will miss that S65. I would keep it and do videos on striping it out and turning it into a track car. Think how much fun that car would be on the track without all the weight.
True, but I would still keep it and try and go for the Team Schirmer or Turner motor sports E-92.. if I had the cash. There will never be another engine like that S65!
My e90 is currently in the shop and it's in limp mode. Engine malfunction. The shop tried "very" hard to diagnose the issue and came back with nothing. E90s can be very temperamental.
@@machtschnell7452 It's not a BMW specific shop, I thought I would take it to them because I like all the mechanics there. I have been going there since before I got my E90. You're totally right and I've messed up by taking it to them. It spent 11 days with them, 400 dollar repair bill (I thought I got out cheap) but turns out they didn't accomplish anything. They replaced some sensors and the code came right back.
Some years ago I had a similar driveshaft vibration on my E34 540i, under hard acceleration it almost smacked the tunnel, forcing me to immediately back off on the throttle. Nobody could solve the problem, I eventually sold it as is.
@@machtschnell7452 at the time the car was 17 years old, the BMW shop would've quoted a small fortune just to keep us out of the shop. 😀 These days the agents are basically just fitters, they don't know how to, or don't have the time to diagnose a problem. They would probably have fitted a new shaft. We took it to a reputable "Joe Blow", there was a slight improvement, but never 100%.
E90s with electric water pumps can do something similar. The water pump is on that same BUS. Ive seen a failing electric water pump blow DME fuses in the engine bay stranding the car.
I want my lexus first, then a BMW e92 or e46 for a sunday drive I use to drive a 3 series love that engine. i sort of want one car to drive everyday where i can fix it up too as well, but a sunday drive sporty and a bit luxrious.
This used to be my nightmare. I bought off a clean 2009 330i from my dad with only 60K miles once. These sort of repairs were endless once I approached 72K-80K. I've been bringing it to the shop twice a week. Newly replaced OEM alternator growled like a dog, suspensions and joints kept braking like plastic straws, and 3 different CEL sensors were having a party in their own glitchy world. These newer gen BMWs are good if you can afford to lease them or repair them endlessly if it is used. Want to buy a reliable used toy? Grab a Japanese car, no other way around this.
I think that any M3 is too powerful for a daily driver. You just never have enough road to use it's full potential. A regular 3 or 5 series would probably be cheaper and more reliable daily driver . Keep in mind that I am from Europe and 3 or 5 series are way more common than any M series so maybe that affects my opinion a bit
Btw, you will LOVE the Si. Hence why I own not one, but two 10th gen Civics. I could buy any new BMW, yet I choose to drive Hondas because they are better cars.
I never understood why manufacturers insist on not using a dipstick. Sensors fail... Dipsticks don't. It also doesn't help when BMW motors (especially ones like the N63 or S63) use oil so you want to be on top of checking the level.
That may be the dumbest answer because even German car mechanics say it's stupid. Also, why did Mercedes bring back the dipstick when they stopped using them in the early 2000s? It seems to me just because the Germans do something outlandish the fanboys make excuses for them yet if Lexus were to dare do stuff like that they'd get blasted.

Got the S60 back and took the V50 down to Skåne and then a upper rear damper mount failed when my mom drove over a speed bump a bit quickly and then we had to limp it around and home with a “banging noise”, got it home lifted it up and put it on jack stands, managed to get the S60 in to the garage, up the steep snowy drive way on summer tires and get the tires switched to the winter set.
Drove it to pick up a package and got back the car and the tires were flat… turns out the were leaking.
Pulled the damper out and it broke when took it out, so i had to buy new dampers, bought a set of Bilstein rear dampers.
Tedward! You're buying my car! I just got a 2022 Civc Si! I'm so excited about this! :D
Dang you moved fast! They’ve been hard to get ahold of out here haha
I recently went through a similar process. I used to daily my 87 944 but the maintenance and lack of low down torque made it a similarly stressful daily. Makes a great weekend car though! Would love to see more of your 3.2!
Yep , in the 944 you gotta be the slow poke lol . The S2 is alittle better
@@christian_urocar I'm dying to try out an s2 but I can never really find many around me
@@wilpeachy9749 I’ve driven a lot of S2’s. From a 87 2,5 you will feel a big difference, from an 87 S 2.7 it will feel similar . The S2 updated turbo look really makes it a keeper . The holy grail is the 968 that’s when youll really get the full Porsche transaxle experience, with a 6 speed mated to a 4cyl 3.0l making 240 hp , updated steering rack ( makes a huge difference) which was the most noticeable difference in handling between 944&968. Driven a lot of turbos , they can really impress when they are modded but I drove a 968 for about a year, it was the best , overall 944 feeling to drive around town and as a daily, low end torque all day .
@@christian_urocar Oh cool thanks! I've had my eye on the 968 but prefer the body of the 944. Would love to do a drivetrain swap from a 968 into a 944 body. I did not know they have different steering racks! Learn something new every day
@@wilpeachy9749 you can swap in 968 parts to a late 944 . You just need a 968 torque tube With the 968 tranny 6 speed, 944 turbo racing guys have purchased this to upgrade for the track.
89’ turbo S with 968 6 speed with LSD is perfect combo. I’ve been lucky to drive 400 miles trip in a 968 turbo S replica turbo charged 3.0l 944s2/968 block, with a 2.7L head with 6speed LSD, was pretty amazing , except the 6 puc clutch made getting out of first a pain.
You’re going to love the new civic si as a daily driver, can’t wait to see new videos on your perspective on the car
I see a Tedward video, I smash that like button. Its just as simple as that
Glad to hear that at least it wasn't mice in the garage munching on the wiring harness!
I'd have been institutionalized if that were the case lol
Its good that the honest people still exists
I have an 09 E92 M3 that daily’s in NE that has been violently in the shop for over the past month, this makes me feel a lil better
What kind of issues has it been experiencing
Watched some vids now I can't stop. Guess it's binge time then😂

Hell yeah super excited to see u in a 22 si 👍🏼🤌🏼
I can relate to this video so much haha. Currently in Massachusetts with BAD motor mounts on my daily E92 M3 with 154,000 miles on Christmas week
I’m hoping to get in a cycle with cheap reliable new cars and trade out every 3 years so I can have expensive unreliable fun cars for the weekend 😂
@@machtschnell7452 I think you'd be surprised how well put together hey are. They hold their value better than any 335 for a reason.
Altima ser is hella underrated, that’s a really cool daily
Looking forward to seeing the new Si! I have a 22 EXL hatchback and I love it. Daily commute requires the automatic but I know you will love the manual!
Best Car ! Best Bmw engine noise along with the S85 on M5 & M6’s Just pure driving enjoyment without having an annoyingly harsh ride experience. My favorite car. Planning on buying one as soon as I find the perfect daily. Can’t daily it here in Greece since gas is 1,7€ / Litter , such a same.
Huge fan man keep up the remarkable work 🔥
Thank you!
I've had the heater in my car cranking full blast when the needle hasn't even moved yet.
how has it been now?
I sold my E92 M3 three years ago, as my daily driver after a year. It was too big of a car size for me(felt not at home) and bad mpg with the power that I rarely get to use from living inside the city. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with your issues. Did not miss it at all. Happy to be in an E46 zhp dd.
E92 M3 my faaaav
Fuck yes, I was so happy when I heard what you're getting, looking forward for some content on it :p
Can't wait to see the new car!
This generation of the m3 looks so damn good
Man this video honestly could not have been better timed because after dealing with these issues for over a year now with my 2008 S4, I know how frustrating it can be to have an issue that can't simply be fixed by replacing a part.
I had my driveshaft rebuilt, had to do the trans/motors mounts at the same time bc that's what accelerated the driveshaft issue originally.
The car has been perfect... so far.
Yeah it shouldn’t give you any issues at those miles. My throttle actuators didn’t fail until 54k. I did rod bearings at 80k.
I parted ways with my E92 for the same reason. It was at 136K and it was starting to show its age. It was also starting to be impractical for me needs, I took it on road trips often and the fuel economy could be better and i needed 4 doors. I traded it in for a VW Golf and its not a bad replacement as i actually get to use all the hp and i spend half on fuel.
love seeing e9x content
Good luck with the new car! I have the same philosophy about my daily driver, that's why I have a Picanto lol
Right on!
I hear you! I ignored a bunch of these issues until I needed an inspection and realized my "quick fix" didn't work. So annoying lol
The Honda will be cool, can't wait to see it.

You know you a car guy when you do the Wizard of Oz tap before you get in your car.
Really good video to watch before buying one especially now while the prices are so inflated and climbing. make sure you are prepared to deal with what comes with owning one of these before you drop the amount of money just required to buy one. It looks good on paper but living with one isn’t for everyone. Amazing car though.
You should stop by the place at 4:40, and maybe have a chat to the owner ;)
If you're the owner please let me know lol
@@TedwardDrives Oh dude, judging by what's there I *WISH* I was the owner.
My E90 330i has way more mechanical issues than electrical tho
As a BMW fanatic and owner I certainly agree with you on the maintenance, but man do I love driving them ! I would certainly keep the E92 and turn it into a track car. You have put lots of $$ and sweat stress on her, might as well keep her and distress at the track! :)
“Keep it strip it make it a track car”>>>>>>>>>
loaner driveshaft is pretty hilarious lol.
I have a 165k mile E92. No issues at all, electrical or mechanical. Knock on wood but this car has been incredibly reliable to me. It's an N52 though.
I don't know why but I like this car so much..
Hey Tedward. Last proper BMWs were e36 and e39 and the end of story. These new plastic toy cars are, well you got one and see how they are.

Why are driving BMW's so therapeutic? Watching this at 3 am... Still makes me want to jump in mine and hit the back roads lol

West coast checking in. You'll have something in about a week. We're about to get hit with it.
I would never drive a car I cared about on salted roads. It then becomes just a sacrificial anode.

Nice views, but those backroads look real rough to drive on
and this is why i purchased a new camaro and have not seen a mechanic in 5.5 years
I think you will miss that S65. I would keep it and do videos on striping it out and turning it into a track car. Think how much fun that car would be on the track without all the weight.
Once a chonker, always a chonker... there's only so much to strip out
True, but I would still keep it and try and go for the Team Schirmer or Turner motor sports E-92.. if I had the cash. There will never be another engine like that S65!
I would absolutely love to have this car man.
But my wallet and anger issues say I probably shouldn’t LOL
My e90 is currently in the shop and it's in limp mode. Engine malfunction. The shop tried "very" hard to diagnose the issue and came back with nothing. E90s can be very temperamental.
Shops can be very incompetent. Is this an independent BMW shop? Not being able to diagnose it should be a giant red flag.
Some e90 engines are just crap, bad design. Diesel or 6 cylinders are mostly fine. Though sensors can of course fail on any engine.
Some years ago I had a similar driveshaft vibration on my E34 540i, under hard acceleration it almost smacked the tunnel, forcing me to immediately back off on the throttle. Nobody could solve the problem, I eventually sold it as is.
Did you take it to a BMW shop or just Joe Blow garage?
@@machtschnell7452 at the time the car was 17 years old, the BMW shop would've quoted a small fortune just to keep us out of the shop. 😀 These days the agents are basically just fitters, they don't know how to, or don't have the time to diagnose a problem. They would probably have fitted a new shaft. We took it to a reputable "Joe Blow", there was a slight improvement, but never 100%.
E90s with electric water pumps can do something similar. The water pump is on that same BUS. Ive seen a failing electric water pump blow DME fuses in the engine bay stranding the car.
I want a BMW, Porsche, or Subaru. But I don’t want a money pit. Am I only allowed to buy Toyota, Honda, and Mazda then?
Ah yes bmw, so beautiful but so temperamental.
Do you think an M car is a decent daily until it hits 100K miles?
Depends on what M car. They are highly different.
And even for a specific problem child as this, its very luck dependent.
If you can’t answer that question for yourself then this is not the car for you
That may be the dumbest answer because even German car mechanics say it's stupid. Also, why did Mercedes bring back the dipstick when they stopped using them in the early 2000s? It seems to me just because the Germans do something outlandish the fanboys make excuses for them yet if Lexus were to dare do stuff like that they'd get blasted.
So you’re replacing it with an eag limerock?
