China's Big Problem: The Rise of Obesity

  • Victim of a terrible famine in the early 1960s that killed nearly 20 million people, China is now facing a new scourge: obesity. 100 million Chinese people are overweight. Although it is a disease particularly prevalent among adolescents, affecting 20% of boys and 10% of girls, even babies are being born at more than six kilos. A phenomenon never before seen in the country’s history.
Expansion and economic growth have changed the lifestyles of Chinese people, who are now consuming more and more Western-style food. Traditional Chinese food, which is generally quite healthy, has been replaced by “junk food” and the portions have doubled or even tripled. The overconsumption of fat and sugar coupled with sedentary lifestyles and the one-child policy have caused rates of obesity to skyrocket. The Chinese authorities are tackling this epidemic with former prison camps for overweight people run by soldiers. Television shows, smartphone applications, doctors and nutritionists are encouraging the entire nation to get into shape.
In this documentary, we visit China to explain why obesity rates are rising, and how weight loss has become a national issue. How has China progressed from a starving country at the beginning of the 21st century to having one of the highest obesity rates in the world?

It saddens me many like this will be hardened or turned cynical by the way the world is now. yet i do hold SOME hope that MAYBE if there are MORE of us that act like THAT....and if we work TOGETHER , maybe we as a people can actually start getting along instead of committing the same cycles of violence, abuse, anger, and ignorance that we as a species have gone through for generations, I TRULY hope that we can slowly start to move past that, and as a people start to be empathic towards each other as a whole. Bless that young man, and may he have a good life. Edit: Plus just wanted to mention the wisdom of that older female chef. she truly understand the link between quality of food to quality of life.

I don't even understand why he is there, he is chubby not too heavy. He would be hitting puberty in a year or two, and the weight would have adjusted. Based on how he talked about his family, it should have been very easy to convince him to eat healthier. The academy is actually making these kids despise healthy eating. You don't force people to lose weight that quickly by feeding them disgusting food. Cook them healthy and tasty food that isn't oily or fried. And maybe offer the parents cooking classes to make such dishes. Just felt like they are making sure the kids relapse and keep coming back for as long as possible.

She didn't eat like garbage and then tell me to eat better. I wasn't made to feel like I was an issue. She just changed the things *she* was in control of with me. We had the closest relationship ever, and I was the one with her when she died ❤. Her first cancer diagnosis (we're fairly sure we know why she had cancer, it was the same reason everyone was dying in her area she grew up in.. it's actually a devastating story) we really changed our lifestyles together.

The translation is terrible and possibly due to editorial bias. For example, the winner of the "biggest loser" didn't say he cries due to bad memory, but he "can't really point to why he cries, maybe it's due to the painful memory, maybe it's due to how treasured these memories were". Also, the nutritionist at dicos didn't complain about the sauce being strong, but being spicy. There are A LOT of translation shortcuts being taken here, and some of them changes the context.

I've lived in China for 11 years and lots of other foreigners like myself always ask me how it is that grandparents can spoil their grandchildren so much and have them eat so much food. Why are they always trying to fill their stomachs? Well. Go and ask those same grandparents how many brothers and sisters they have? They have more than usual because they didn't grow up under the one child policy, but during the last 100+ years China has faced several crises that have lead to food scarcity and many of these grandparents you talk to will tell you that they've had brothers and sister's who have starved to death. This pain is still with them and they can't bear to watch their children or grandchildren go hungry like they had to watch their siblings go hungry. So the answer to why is very sad and goes to show how what we go through in life can greatly influence our later behavior towards others.

@KevinSamuelsKid substitutes are relatively easy, for instance, you can try fruit with a small amount of sugar or dark chocolate to replace sweets. One of my favorites is dark chocolate syrup with raspberries. Replace sweet yogurt with Greek yogurt and add honey or granola. Eat hummus and cucumber or salsa and tortilla chips instead of potato chips and dip (this is cheaper too). Also, reduce the amount of meat and milk products you eat. Vegetables should take up half of your plate, so taste them and tweak them to find your favorites, I love brussel sprouts, avocado, and sweet potato.
Swaps are easy, you just have to find the healthy foods you enjoy and don't restrict yourself too aggressively or you'll end up quitting. If you feel hungry, find more vitamin dense foods that satisfy you instead of pushing you to overindulge without noticing.

I'm severely chronically ill/disabled to where I've been mostly bedridden for over a decade. But I struggle just to stay 100lbs because I have an incredibly difficult time eating and drinking, to the point I've dealt with chronic malnutrition and dehydration for that time. Before the vehicle accident that caused this to me as a child, I was obese just like so many others and could barely move from it. I still remember the physical pains of being fat. Which are nothing compared to the pains of not eating, but that's not my point. I remember coming home crying because of not having friends and being bullied, and my well meaning grandparents giving me oreos to make me feel better. My point is that it absolutely is what/how much you eat and/or how much you move. It's that simple. It also requires addressing the root mental and emotional issues, or you're likely to fail. The keys to most everything in life is education, dedication, and moderation.

@@StrongRespect true, im obese and its a battle. it all boils down to discipline FOR MOST of it. The smaller percent is paying attention to whats actually in the food because that does more damage than overeating. I could eat more calories and actually lose weight than if i ate "normal" portions full of maltodextrin, corn syrups and other ingredients or chemicals which affect your hormones. Yes i know thats what junk food is, but the thing is that they put it in "healthy" options too. Sweet n Low sugar packets claim to be sugar free but its literally worse than sugar, putting heavier strain on the pancreas because it has maltodextrin/ dextrose/ modified food starch. Also dont forget than the american government tells you that every meal should have 50% of carbs and claiming its the ideal healthy diet. Theres a lot more to this than not over eating, you have to grow and cook your own food to actually be healthy. Its really sad how bad american food really is, i hope other countries are more honest.

You have to have proof that you have tried to lose weight for a long time as well as seeing health professionals before seeing the weight loss doctors/surgeons. They want you to have good habits and a healthy mindset before doing surgery to decrease the risk of you reverting to those bad habits and putting on the weight again. Surgery is not a quick fix to the underlying issues and I think it is a great system of support in place for those wanting surgery.

The thing about acupunture is that it does work, but it's more like a supplementary way of losing weight like if ur already trying ur best, doing exercise, watching what you eat, etc, it would help boost the rate ofyour weight loss. If you don't change the regimen and still eat a ton, the effects would be so minimal that it wouldn't really work. Acupuncture improves the circulation, metabolism, blood flow and regular sessions would basically just increase the rate of weightloss. To rely on acupuncture alone would not fix the fundamental issue. I went to an acupuncturist who explained this all to me. My session was more for regeneration and pain relief, but they talked about their methods of weightloss and how fixing diet and exercise was the base issue.

If I may so slide a piece of feedback in though - as a native Chinese and English speaker, I found some parts of the editing a bit rough or slightly inaccurate. For example, cutting off someone mid-sentence, or letting them start the next sentence and then cutting them off outside of the translated bits. Would definitely appreciate more attention to these production details so I can focus on the great content!

In all places cut the sugar for the best results. Sugar is so addictive. Also, cut white flower as it's too processed.

I am an overseas Chinese person who grew up in the 90s with immigrant parents. Although my parents purportedly tried to bring me up with Chinese cuisine they were used to, it was heavily saturated with an excess abundance of meat and often the portion sizes were not kid friendly. This, plus their allowance of fast food which introduced unhealthy ingredients. What I took away from growing up in such a household was there was too much value put on meat. As a child I was so repulsed by them putting meat in everything that as an adult I now barely eat it. To them it is still unbelievable to go through a meal not having at least one meat dish. It is also psychological. Both my parents came from backgrounds where they experienced food insecurity and so now it is a lifelong effect of them constantly concerned about having food and obtaining foods, at the detriment of themselves.

The boys are actually overweight/obese. I am a broad-shouldered girl who is the same height as the first boy who got dropped off by his dad, Du Shuai. I was at a nearly normal weight when I hit 67kg. The coach is correct by saying that 64.5kg is his ideal weight.
However, I see where you are coming from. But the best is to always refer to a few medically certified nutritionists and get fat levels checked.
Reaching a healthy weight is especially important for those with genetic risks where parents and grandparents/ siblings have diabetes/ heart issues/ high cholesterol. Reason: Visceral fat around organs can actually form since one is a teenager. I know this after I had a reality check and found out that my body age was 47 at 17 years old due to being 88kg at the same height as Du Shuai back then. I was obese until 18. Thereafter, I lost 20kgs BUT over a course of nearly 3 years. I also ate normally but dedicated an entire year in learning how to cook healthy yet delicious food. Additionally, I also consulted a nutritionist from a renowned hospital and learnt the basics of calories, nutrients, and what triggers unhealthy cravings (often related to stress and lack of sleep).
That being said, I disagree with the fat camp format. Hiring a PT for the long term, who can actually be therapists/ counselors as well, having genuine care for kids is so important. The root cause is always emotional or environmental. Judgement from China's unforgiving society exacerbates the situation. Chinese elders are also famous for treating food as a love language and get offended when their lovingly handmade (but calorie-dense) unhealthy snacks get rejected. After loading your plate non-stop with food....they then comment how fat you have become :D
What really changed my life was when I was 19-20 years old, I battled against my family's eating habits. They ended up accommodating to my weight-loss needs after endless heated arguments. The weight really dropped when every started eating healthy as well!
Hopefully my sharing helps in spreading some knowledge :) @@aprillin8748
