PSA: Sleeping three hours a day will KILL YOU. Don't do that.

    • @captlanc
      @captlanc Рік тому +437

It actually won’t - don’t scare the insomniacs. But it will weaken the body quite a bit and with enough exertion - like these young Koreans are doing - their chances of dying are much higher.
Edit: Since I'm getting lots of 'rebuttals' from who are just essentially rephrasing my points in agreement regarding sleep - imma answer this once and for all. But first, insomniacs, people who can't make the time to sleep, here's actual helpful advice to you - ignore these obtuse people, they literally don't know what they are talking about. Take it easy on yourself, rest when you can and when you feel you must - do not ignore the signals your body is sending you. Sleeping is not the only form of rejuvenation. Try to see an expert if you can - do you already know what's the root cause of your issue? Meanwhile, have patience with yourself, mediate, relax, be happy. You will be fine.
And now for the purposefully obtuse, yes, sleep is important, not once have I suggested or advocated otherwise. But no, not having enough sleep alone will NOT kill you. Anyone who says otherwise, have you even looked up on the scientific data on insomnia and life expectancy? Have you studied it? Have you worked with patients with chronic insommia? Saying that sleeping 3 hours a day WILL kill you is not only scientifically and statistically inaccurate, it is fear mongering. Let's not pretend that the fact that 'sleep is important' is new information - people who are suffering from sleep deprivation already know it and feel it, and nobody should be adding needless stress on people who are already going through a hard time. People should be more conscientious of the effect of their words but why be precise or nuanced when making hyperbolic statements like OP did is more exciting, I guess.

This video reminds me of why I left Korea. I was considered a 'winner' in its intensely competitive society, having graduated with both a BA and MA from Y, one of the SKY. I secured a job in a major Jaebol conglomerate, earning a high salary. However, I found myself frustrated because the so-called successful life was also miserable. The competition was relentless, especially within the firm for higher positions. Despite the high pay, there was no time to enjoy the money earned, and the never-ending comparisons made it a challenging environment. Even those deemed 'winners' were not happy, who would be?

Statistically, the poorer you are, the more likely you will live in an urban area with bad air quality therefor contributing to shorter life expectancy. The part where they said that living in a small room can have long lasting impacts on mental health ringed a bell. Three years ago, I've lived for about 7 months in a very small appartment in Paris due to the high renting price there (the room was the size of two double beds, the single room included a bed, a kitchen counter and a desk, and the windows were so high that you couldn't see outside without standing on a chair). Because of the lockdown I could only go sometime outside for work or meeting my friends, so I stayed about 5 days at home per weeks.
Well I've never been more depressed than in those times. Being so confined in this space, the littlest inconvenience in the house (the heater not working, my fridge breaking etc) put me in genuine dispair. For idk what reason, I started being scared of inviting people to come over, or even come outside. At the end I could spend days sitting down on the ground against my bed listening to the noises my neighbour's parrot was making.
Then I've been hospitalized (for other health conditions) and moved out but looking back it was scary what this place did to me.

Singapore is moving in the same direction! Tiny island wants to jam in 7 million and more. The apartments are becoming very much smaller, building taller and prices inflating every year. Humans need a certain amount of personal spaces in order to thrive and be emotionally happy. Overcrowding causes a lot of daily stress!! However, Asian countries' leaders don't understand that allowing their citizens personal space and time to enjoy leisure, family life, hobbies and travel etc. makes for a happier, stronger and more productive nation. They just squeeze and exploit them to the very last drop. This leads to decline and death of a society.

This issue is not isolated to South Korea. I am in tech, in the US. Globalization, endless innovations, competition, and neck-breaking speed means crazy long hours. I work 15 to 17 hour days, 6 days a week, including holidays. The pandemic induced work-from-home approach means I now burn 16 to 19 hours a day with work. I absolutely stop at 19 hours, so I can have 5 hours to sleep. Having a good education and moving up the career ladder doesn't mean you work less and it usually means the opposite. So the issue impacts all segments of society. You have these youth that don't have enough money to live, and you have older generation that make more money but absolutely no time to spend money or enjoy life or the fruition of the hard work. What the world need is to slow down... We don't need a new phone, tech toy, or TV every year...

it was an unavoidable F from the start. I saw first hand how (students)you can do the assignments ! did all the work ! and still graded an F ...
I was the only one who spoke out about it. another Professor who I was on better terms with tried to talk to the difficult one.
next class that Proffessor told us to *quote* "not beg our grades up" ... Unbelievable ...
in the course description it said we will be graded not only by Test results , but also attendance and assignments
this Proffessor ...did not grade anyone based on all of these points. either an F or a D+
and imagine if you have a University with mostly Proffessors like that...
that Proffessor even (practically bragging) said that... last year she had a student that begged her not to give her an F because she will lose her scolarship.
so in Hankuk University there is a Proffessor going rouge ,grading most of her students F ....and no one can do anything about it because it seemed like she "knows a suit upstairs" (understand?)
I truly can see how ppl get demoralized and depressed.
they are holding their own youth back.

Nobody wants to live outside of the city, not in Busan, not in Sejong City, and certainly not all the way down in Gwangju. And forget about rural areas. Everybody wants Seoul. Can you imagine if everyone in the U.S. only wanted to live in NYC? It would be a catastrophe.
    2) young people don’t want to do any manual labor. At all. Nobody wants to be an auto mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc. everyone wants to work in an office for a “global company” and if they don’t get that kind of job, they’d rather stay home and give up. By the way, in Seoul, auto mechanics charge outrageous prices for the simplest things, even an oil change, because nobody has any DIY skills in Korean society.

Haha that’s extremely optimistic. There are many factors against her. Extreme sleep deprivation, inflation, and poor mental health
I think the most appropriate action would be to focus 100% on one specific job, particularly her web design role rather than having 2 jobs and basically screwing your body over. The fact that she’s getting scolded for her mistakes and poor performance implies that she’s not doing well in her first job which is probably because of how exhausting a 2 job routine is, hence she would not be chosen over others who focus entirely on their role and would easily perform better than her. Rising costs wise, I think it’s definitely necessary to cut down on expenses drastically for a few months as she gets her life in check. Maybe checking with her relatives if she could borrow a bit, or live with them for a while. Personally, it would not make sense to start a business when you’re struggling with costs. A single unfortunate event or anything involving her already poor health would basically shut down any chances she had. You can’t expect a sleep deprived, desperate person to be rational though.

Tips to live your life fully and happily:
    1. Unapologetically remove people in your life if they no longer serve you well. Unfriend them in social media if they are being toxic or mute them if you cannot unfriend them.
    2. Filter your social media to help with things you goal for. If you want to be a minimalist, follow minimalist contents, if you want photography, architecture, art, follow things related to it. Dont be weirded out if some months, you like different things. It is ok and it is normal, taylor your socials to whatever you want if that will leave you inspired and motivated.
    3. Don't take people's advice to heart, they sometimes dont know what they are talking about. If you need advice with money, seek it it to platforms or people who are knowledgable.
    4. Not all people really care. You're insecure, thats ok, its normal, but dont overthink other people really care about your insecurities when reality is, they do not or at least not as much. And if they use it against you? There's nothing to life but to be happy, so why care. I know its easier said than done but sometimes its just in our mind. I hope this one learning I got from a book helps: Your mind, its created to think, in whatever ways it can. It can think of the impossible, it can think of the possible, you're awake, it doesnt stop thinking, you're asleep, its still working. But, as a person, our job is to hear it out not be it. Imagine yourself as a listener to your brain. What it says doesnt mean that is how you are. It can go imaginable places, dream of dreams too far, but you is you. And whats in the mind if not done is just an idea.
    4. Be present. As someone in my late 20s that is in this same cycle of work work work, to save save save, to eventually have this and that. I just gave up. I refused to be in that vision of tomorrow, rather I goal of to be of now. What I mean by this is example: I am not gonna make my home nice YET bc I'm saving. I'll have this fancy home when I get to have this X amount of money etc. Its bllsht! Since I was young we constantly move places bc of my parents work. And never did I have that dream room bc of that. I know this story sounds pathetic but! there was a realization. You're wants doesnt end as long as you're alive. I'm up to living within your means, but living a good nice life is within our reach. Simply doing a small tweak, have your home cozy and nice will make a big difference. When you feel great about your body and environment, you become generally motivated. Brush your teeth, take a bath, take a walk, buy that cute nice lamp for 20 instead if that aweful designed one for 10 that doesnt spark joy. Eat healthy, eat well. Exercise. I know, what a broken record but thats the most practical advice that makes such a big difference.
    5. Have a Lord, God, you can trust. You can only take a certain weight. Mental capacity isn't enough, sometimes it betrays, even the body you have, even the actions you do, even your family and friends, they can betray. So what's there left? It might be not the most "scientific" advice. You might think how can you believe on someone who you cannot see. But, how about your overthinking? Its not happening yet you believe, now what's the difference? You just have to choose one way or the other. Choose your battle.
Dont take life so seriously and make it complicated. Living life one step at a time is ok. You are totally fine no matter how the world sometimes make us feel useless. Love you all and take care always!

I didn't realize everywhere was like this. I'm in the US and in Northern Virginia. It's to a point where I don't need to worry about ever getting a house and leaving my apartment because if I don't work nonstop overtime I will be homeless. @TheRealCatofThe Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven.
But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps:
      1. Realize that you are a sinner who CAN'T SAVE YOURSELF from going to the lake of fire (forever) 🔥 based on your good deeds, your own philosophy, and other religions.
      2. Realize that you need to believe in your heart ❤️ that ONLY Jesus Christ died for your sins.
If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart ❤️ that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart ❤️ man believe unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Congratulations! 🎊 👏 After this life, you're on your way to heaven forever! ⬆️💯🥳

@TheRealCatof nevermind that not everyone has the financial means to attend college, but job opportunities themselves are a zero sum game. Low paying jobs will still need to be done, and that won't change even if the entire population received higher education. The injustice here is that a person's right to live shouldn't be contingent on pay. Shelter, water, food, and healthcare should be a basic necessity provided to everyone, for all ages. It's obviously easier said than done, but we should at the very least strive for it

I thought the words by the woman with the fashionable scarf, "Everyone is running towards the same goal" were profound. We are NOT best served by a society where diversity is not valued. When parents punish their children for wanting to go off the beaten track (if not physically then emotionally), it leads to poorer outcomes for everyone. We absolutely need our sanitation workers, our musicians, our bus drivers, and every other role crucial to making a happy and functional society.

If the same goal is earning enough money to afford a decent place to live, save for retirement and raise a family, I don't see any problem at that. Also as this video points out, not graduating from one of the very top universities means you're essentially economically stuck. Parents know this, and pushing their kids to get the best grades possible is totally understandable given this context.

I used to live in the Philippines, left the country for 5 years and now companies won’t hire me because of my age and thinking that I will be back to Portugal anyway. Such discrimination and selective process these companies have in the Philippines. Meanwhile in Portugal, I worked as a receptionist and an all - around staff working alone in the hotel, basically managing by my own, worked in company where they promoted me as manager but eventually quit due to mental breakdown. I have saved some money but I would rather choose my health than a job that will drain your body and soul. I am in the Philippines for some months winding down and getting an increase of anxiety since I am going back to Portugal once more. Where i can get job easily compared to my homeland. How I wish that the world don’t make it too harsh for our generations, but that’s a wishful thinking that might not come true.

These are the people who can help you without expecting to get something in return. Although these kinds of people are very hard to find, but they do exist. Let us remove toxic people in our lives. That's the kind of peace you'll get and to be honest, it has made me feel so much lovable and happier.

As a third culture kid (Asian born and raised in Europe) I went through a cultural identity crisis like many. Not enough Asian. Not enough White. I don’t belong to any country and felt envious about Asians that can call their country « home ».
Being an adult with years of work experience now, I see how life is hard in Korea, Japan (or any other Asian country) and feel fortunate to be in a western country with a decent job, good life balance, vacations that allow me to travel, enjoy without much pressure.
Traveling there is great but living, working sounds very challenging.
My Korean friends are always working like crazy, have to spend some evenings with work/dinner gatherings and are speechless when I tell them that I have 2 months vacation per year.
On the other side, some youngsters fantasize about Korea, think it’s all about roses and rainbow, they don’t realize how tough it is for Koreans to find a job, their society is very demanding with a high level of expectations.
That’s a shame. Many talented and hard working people out there but they are trapped in a toxic society that fail to give them a chance.
Edit : In the country I live, most of the time, it is prohibited to have two jobs. As the contract of your company doesn’t allow you to work with a second company.
But if you are allowed to have 2 jobs, the total duration of these two jobs does not exceed the legal working hours, i.e. 10 hours/day and 48 hours/week.
Non-compliance with the rules results in sanctions for both the employee and the employer.
    A maximum fine of €3,000.
Possible dismissal for serious misconduct for the employee.

Where do you live in Europe and what job do you have so you can vacation for two months? 🤔

    • @hikjee

@@lv9265 France. No matter your job, the minimum legal is 5 weeks. Depending on your company, French people also get from 6-10 weeks.
I know a few, who have nearly 3 months (but it’s really rare).
I also worked in Canada, and only had 10 days, it was shocking for every French.

Same as you, I did wonder what it would be like to "go back" to search for the missing "belonging" in my 20s. But now, I am just grateful to live and seeing my kids growing up in Europe.

So to recap, S. Korea has
    - Intense social competition
    - highest working hours
    - highest suicide rate
    - high accommodation price in big cities
    - Yet, low wages
    - Lowest birthrate
Sounds like a doom on every front

I like how the Singapore government is crafting the underlying message that the youth in Singapore should be grateful work in largely government GLCs and accept the wonderful Singapore life. From lying down in China to Joseon Hell the message is clear.

If that's the hidden message, then I am sorry to tell you that they are right. Such a small country, with no natural ressources, growing so fast in the most competitive continent, with people who were starving 40 years ago and now middle class can live a very comfortable life, it's almost a miracle and no other country has been able to achieve this.
You are a very well-educated person, I am sure you traveled a lot in the world, I guess you saw it yourself.

CNA / SG government is not wrong. Young Singaporeans are almost invariably 10-20 years ahead of their global peers: they're fluent in at least two languages, have a very strong passport, have access to high quality education and healthcare, and don't have to worry about housing thanks to the HDB. Most people in the world need to study and work for 10-20 years just to get to that level.

The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins.

I grew up super poor and worked three jobs while going to a full time college so never had enough sleep. This is so infuriating how young people who are willing and capable are not given the support they need to be the future of their own country. You must tax the rich higher. You don’t just become a billionaire without taking from others. Young folks need to change and influence the policy to make their lives better.😢
