It actually won’t - don’t scare the insomniacs. But it will weaken the body quite a bit and with enough exertion - like these young Koreans are doing - their chances of dying are much higher. Edit: Since I'm getting lots of 'rebuttals' from who are just essentially rephrasing my points in agreement regarding sleep - imma answer this once and for all. But first, insomniacs, people who can't make the time to sleep, here's actual helpful advice to you - ignore these obtuse people, they literally don't know what they are talking about. Take it easy on yourself, rest when you can and when you feel you must - do not ignore the signals your body is sending you. Sleeping is not the only form of rejuvenation. Try to see an expert if you can - do you already know what's the root cause of your issue? Meanwhile, have patience with yourself, mediate, relax, be happy. You will be fine. And now for the purposefully obtuse, yes, sleep is important, not once have I suggested or advocated otherwise. But no, not having enough sleep alone will NOT kill you. Anyone who says otherwise, have you even looked up on the scientific data on insomnia and life expectancy? Have you studied it? Have you worked with patients with chronic insommia? Saying that sleeping 3 hours a day WILL kill you is not only scientifically and statistically inaccurate, it is fear mongering. Let's not pretend that the fact that 'sleep is important' is new information - people who are suffering from sleep deprivation already know it and feel it, and nobody should be adding needless stress on people who are already going through a hard time. People should be more conscientious of the effect of their words but why be precise or nuanced when making hyperbolic statements like OP did is more exciting, I guess.
@@hikjeeNot denying that. Just a PSA to not frighten those insomniacs who may come across this video and cause them further stress. There is a thing called non-sleep deep rest. Many people lived long lives despite lack of sleep. Let’s not exaggerate and frighten people.
@@Claudia-cy6ouWith just three hours of sleep, they might appear fine temporarily, but a crucial breakdown could happen at any moment, jeopardizing their health irreversibly.
This video reminds me of why I left Korea. I was considered a 'winner' in its intensely competitive society, having graduated with both a BA and MA from Y, one of the SKY. I secured a job in a major Jaebol conglomerate, earning a high salary. However, I found myself frustrated because the so-called successful life was also miserable. The competition was relentless, especially within the firm for higher positions. Despite the high pay, there was no time to enjoy the money earned, and the never-ending comparisons made it a challenging environment. Even those deemed 'winners' were not happy, who would be?
@@moonmissy Yes and an unsustainable one. I have never seen people smile as brightly as children in poor villages that have a deeper sense of bond with their community.
I hope you have better life now and enjoying wherever you are. That environment where you came from is very toxic, its what I noticed when watching kdramas too 😅
Call me lazy but i'd rather die than working 18 hours a day. 9 hours a day is already torturing my body. Sleeping less than 5 hours is a hell on earth 🤯
this is happening all over the world. the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer. the poor are withdrawing because: whats the point in playing the game when you know the game is rigged and youll never get ahead no matter how hard or long you work?

I have been amazed at how people can glorify no sleep. In my experience Koreans do that the most. Sleep is an essential part of human life. It's not something we "deserve" or not. What's next? The need to prove our worth to deserve air?
Exactly I used to be this way… as in using my time to learn and stay up late night and be in the computer. That’s until I started having manic episodes and hallucinating from lack of sleep. It scared the crap out of me because I started being paranoid. Now I sleep when I can.
That's so sad.. sleep is a non-negotiable thing. People think they can give up sleep and just study/work more but if you don't sleep enough, you can't even focus on your studies/work and you can't do your best. It's a false belief that we can gain anything by giving up sleep, in my opinion.
@Miyankochan Also, lack of sleep + heavy machine operation is very much a no no. OSHA would have banned it if they could, but they can't mandate how long people need to sleep
We kind of already do have to prove our worth for better air. Statistically, the poorer you are, the more likely you will live in an urban area with bad air quality therefor contributing to shorter life expectancy. Richer folk in the surburbs/countryside have cleaner air. Life isn't fair. But it's been like this for centuries.
The part where they said that living in a small room can have long lasting impacts on mental health ringed a bell. Three years ago, I've lived for about 7 months in a very small appartment in Paris due to the high renting price there (the room was the size of two double beds, the single room included a bed, a kitchen counter and a desk, and the windows were so high that you couldn't see outside without standing on a chair). Because of the lockdown I could only go sometime outside for work or meeting my friends, so I stayed about 5 days at home per weeks. Well I've never been more depressed than in those times. Being so confined in this space, the littlest inconvenience in the house (the heater not working, my fridge breaking etc) put me in genuine dispair. For idk what reason, I started being scared of inviting people to come over, or even come outside. At the end I could spend days sitting down on the ground against my bed listening to the noises my neighbour's parrot was making. Then I've been hospitalized (for other health conditions) and moved out but looking back it was scary what this place did to me.
Singapore is moving in the same direction! Tiny island wants to jam in 7 million and more. The apartments are becoming very much smaller, building taller and prices inflating every year. Humans need a certain amount of personal spaces in order to thrive and be emotionally happy. Overcrowding causes a lot of daily stress!! However, Asian countries' leaders don't understand that allowing their citizens personal space and time to enjoy leisure, family life, hobbies and travel etc. makes for a happier, stronger and more productive nation. They just squeeze and exploit them to the very last drop. This leads to decline and death of a society.

@LolyBest: Really? 😱 With the Ukraine war dragging on, high energy cost in Western Europe will be the norm, they will not have much of an economy left. I am glad that I don't live in South Korea anymore. There are so much more opportunities here in Canada, but my dad had to sacrifice his well-paying professional job for me and my brothers can have a better future.

Trust me the life in South Korea is a heckuva lot better than North Korea where sure there's no stress but living in a stress free no competition kinda environment is also very unfulfilling. The trick is to find balance. You don't have to play that rat race game keeping up with the Jones.

This is happening world wide & as a parent I cannot let my children suffer so I let them stay at home until they think they can stand on their own. I also don’t understand the amount of pressure that the South Koreans impose on their children as far as education because in our country, when you are done with school, you go home, do your homework & do self study for an examination or a quiz. Then you can relax the rest of the evening till bedtime.

The first girl is literally living to work and not the other way around. I thought of migrating to a developed country for selfish reasons and because of soc med posts romanticizing such life in developed countries. However, I was soon slapped by reality after thorough research that in order for me to survive, going back to square one, living in a foreign country, I will need to work 3 jobs. I was like, na ah. I'm good in my country. At least here, I have work-life balance. Many inconveniences though, that comes with living in a third world country but those are mostly annoyances and easily overcome. If I pursued living abroad as a single person, I will only live to work and that will easily take a toll on my overall health. I don't wanna die like that. I mean, even if I live in a third world country, not many of my countrymen can have the life that I have so seeing this makes me more appreciative of what I have, even if I lack a lot in life.
I don’t know where you’re from but you’re absolutely correct. Take for example in the US, even if u make $100k/yr, it’s a decent salary income but you gotta work hard for it. In addition, rent here in the US skyrocketed. An average of $2,000 in most cities plus u need a car (average brand new $700, while used-car is $500/month). Healthcare care here is a “hellcare” unless your employer provides you with health insurance but it is a crime to get sick and taken to the ER in the US (3 hrs admitted to the ER cost my insurance $15,000, my co-pay was $300 due to stomach ache) Korea on the other hand where living in the not so good apartment, area or “goshiwon” isn’t as bad thing compare in the US where cheap apartments has (bad neighborhoods, drug addicts, and crime happening around the area)
As an American... who's young, but not that young... I watched this & saw a lot of similarities between South Korea & the United States, as far as young workers goes, and good jobs.... The thing is we don't have the option of public transportation & small apartments we can even rent like "goshiwon"... We have to have, a vehicle, expensive freaking auto insurance... *sighs* can't even write it off for taxes.. . Christ its depressing! But here's the kicker, Korean parents may be strict, but at least they seem to care for their kids & try to guide them toward success... I know I didn't have that when I was growing up. *sighs*

I lived in Korea. University student. this is motivating me to speak out about my experiance there too. I truly understand how they can get depressed to the point of suicide... it is strange to admit to this. I had bad Proffessors (not all ofc) but 1,2 bad proffessors in my Uni ...and I was doing the work (we all were) for the Korean Prononciation Class. it was an unavoidable F from the start. I saw first hand how (students)you can do the assignments ! did all the work ! and still graded an F ... I was the only one who spoke out about it. another Professor who I was on better terms with tried to talk to the difficult one. next class that Proffessor told us to *quote* "not beg our grades up" ... Unbelievable ... in the course description it said we will be graded not only by Test results , but also attendance and assignments this Proffessor ...did not grade anyone based on all of these points. either an F or a D+ and imagine if you have a University with mostly Proffessors like that... that Proffessor even (practically bragging) said that... last year she had a student that begged her not to give her an F because she will lose her scolarship. so in Hankuk University there is a Proffessor going rouge ,grading most of her students F ....and no one can do anything about it because it seemed like she "knows a suit upstairs" (understand?) I truly can see how ppl get demoralized and depressed. they are holding their own youth back. it is a good University and mostly good experiance but I did have this experiance. after seeing this I almost felt like it is my duty to type this here so it is known. saying AnYthInG ~ negative sounding about a University of theirs ..and you can forget ever going back there. so I had this fear but not anymore after seeing this. they need to Not hold back their youth.
Thank you for sharing your story. As a college student in the US I had also run into a couple of bad professors, but hearing how it happens to that extent in your case is awful

Some of these people who didn't go to traditional school have other skills that kept them going. I think this should be also recognized by companies to hire this type of people base on their skills not just education. If you know how to do the job well why not hire and pay them well. These gives incentives to people who wants to do the job base on their skills and not just educational background.
It'd be better to select workers based more on their personality and interests -- and not spend so much effort determining the absolute top candidate out of thousands of applicants -- instead of purely comparing paper to your impossible ideal, then provide OJT. This is more like how companies used to hire (and how the public sector and military still does hire) before the internet made the whole world "accessible" (which goes both ways), and firms got lazy wanting to instead lean on public education and poaching from competitors to fill their staffing needs.
@@doujinflipI agree. My law firm interviewed a guy with perfect LSAT. score and great grades. He didn't get an offer because he had an awful personality and no people skills.
There's that, but companies with an overload of workers also use education to weed out people with out having to explain themselves away. Just say,"you don't have the qualifications". And that's it. You just waste all your energy, time, and resources to prepare for the interview, then bam!!! "You don't qualify"

Most are so programmed to see reality beyond their cultural and social conformities, life that we are is universal and if your mind, body and spirit diverged from the whole, the depression and sense of lost become order of the day and illusion of retiring is a big scam created by societies, many never make it or end up in old peoples
I live in Italy, have a degree in psychology and work as a hand in a glass foundry. The imbalance between scholarization and workplaces is not just a Korean thing.
Its a scam. Well in the UK it is. People are driven to university to get pointless degrees or degrees with no job prospects at the end. When we should be all learning a trade or skill we can take away in life. Its a scam to.make everyone poorer.
This issue is not isolated to South Korea. I am in tech, in the US. Globalization, endless innovations, competition, and neck-breaking speed means crazy long hours. I work 15 to 17 hour days, 6 days a week, including holidays. The pandemic induced work-from-home approach means I now burn 16 to 19 hours a day with work. I absolutely stop at 19 hours, so I can have 5 hours to sleep. Having a good education and moving up the career ladder doesn't mean you work less and it usually means the opposite. So the issue impacts all segments of society. You have these youth that don't have enough money to live, and you have older generation that make more money but absolutely no time to spend money or enjoy life or the fruition of the hard work. What the world need is to slow down... We don't need a new phone, tech toy, or TV every year...
In US too? I'm surprised to hear that. I was in US for 1 month (many many years ago) as a trainee before returning to my home country in Asia. I got the impression that my US colleagues were pretty easy going when it comes to their working hours. They can leave their office , anytime they liked, when they liked. I was in the manufacturing sector back then
It is hearbreaking to see these young people struggling in life. They have goals, they want to work hard, but the marketplace is so tough. Those who sleep 3 hours a day are inviting mental / physical breakdown at some point. The issue seems to be many-layered, and I know Japan and China youths are facing the same thing to various extents. Prayers to them and wishes that the conditions change for the better and there will be places in the society for them to thrive.
What do u think 🤔 of those Americans who don't even wanna work at all & just stay home 24/7 for few years now? I know my american neighbors who are currently going through this. Are they worse off or those who work 2 much?
Even here in the US, we’re being forced to have 2 jobs with high cost of living. I live in California and I’m seeking a 2nd job so I can afford an apartment, it’s so expensive now just for a studio. I think Japan and Korea have always worked more hours than other countries cuz of the high cost of living. Now some states in the US making it tougher to survive with one job to be independent. Like that saying 2 incomes is better than one, but hard when the income is from one person not two people. Stay strong and save. Minimalism helps a lot like the UA-camr said.
I'm also west coast, I can afford a studio but nothing more. With a "good" job. I buy everything secondhand and cook all my own meals, usually with whatever I find on sale. It's too difficult. I can never afford a house, they are a minimum 800k (which is recommended to have an income of 200k a year to afford... Who makes that?!?!?!) The asset bubble is out of control. Real estate is insane... Something needs to be done. But I look at Canada and they are even worse than us, so I know there is room for things to get worse here.
This vid makes me apreciate that i am born in europe way more. Having multiple ways to freedom and sucess, aswell as proper second chances. Man my condolences and best of luck for you folks.

The main problem with korean culture isn't that they work so hard. Its that they all convince and pressure each other to do prestigious jobs they hate. Capitalism requires workers at all wage points and also innovation of new industry. Under capitalism a person can just attend college or trade school to learn a new career. Can’t happen under socialism or communism. Capitalism has been going on for more than a century. Communism fell in half that time.
@@kristinesharp6286 My mom chose the job which she wanted, to which she really had passion. And got enough money to go to the seaside every year and raise a child. Also, she got a new flat just because she worked. So yes, she got what she wanted to in Soviet Union. Right now, I know a lot of people who works on well-paid jobs just to get money and hate their jobs. Under socialism everyone can attend college or trade school to learn new career, without paying for it, you just need to be clever enough. Under capitalism you can have rich parents or have 2 works to pay for your study
@@thekinginthenorth5230 no not everyone can attend college or trade school under socialism. Today in Russia you have to be the % of students or you have to pay and go to a paying school. Everyone can’t in North Korea go to free school. Not if your uncle pissed off the wrong person you will be relocated. 80% in South Korea go to college. It is just some are knocking themselves out to go the top few schools. Parents throw money at it. Go into debt to throw money at. It ridiculous they need a financial management section on the exam so they learn how stupid it is. So they are going with 80% attending. In the U.S. you can live a perfectly happy, happier life not going to Harvard. I hate to tell you in the USSR everyone wasn’t equal. Those that did well under the USSR did well when the wall fell. Tell me how did they decide who lived in the 5 floor walk up post 40’s and who lived in the prewar apartment with elevator? Of course things were unequal. The children of serfs in rural areas didn’t get the same education as the kid in Moscow. Are you kidding me?
0:50 and yet no one is doing anything to change this mindset which starts from as early on as school. Publicly releasing grades as a rank, kids being expected to learn in hakwons (tutor) to be ahead of what they learn in school, and having no free time. Why is no one talking about this nor the negative impact that korean culture has on a person? (Youngest working the longest, serving the older ppl regardless of job title, etc)

@TheRealCatof nevermind that not everyone has the financial means to attend college, but job opportunities themselves are a zero sum game. Low paying jobs will still need to be done, and that won't change even if the entire population received higher education. The injustice here is that a person's right to live shouldn't be contingent on pay. Shelter, water, food, and healthcare should be a basic necessity provided to everyone, for all ages. It's obviously easier said than done, but we should at the very least strive for it
I absolutely love the project initiated by Seung Gyu. What a beautiful lesson of humanity, togetherness and solidarity to overcome your difficulties. Kudos young man ❤
that's the issue when a country develope too quickly. wages just cannot keep up with living cost, especially housing. young generation flocks to the capital where the main korean economy is based at, driving the housing cost & renting cost insanely high. if the government can spread out the headquarters of the big companies to other cities, it may be a little bit better. if korea keeps their current low fertility rate trajectory, it would be a more serious problem in the future.
Same issue in America. Everyone thinks it's a perfect country. Lots of people from teens to 50s do hook onto drugs, alcohol 🍸, and crime. It's not what people think. 😕 America is only fit for those with lots of money. The poor people and mid class people have to suffer to live a comfy life.

Everybody in South Korea was pushed by society to "look rich," and then they were exhausted. Much like most Asian countries, in the place I live (a developing country), society pushed us to look rich as well, even with a mountain of debt behind it. Hey, at least you look rich, right?
Very true, their amount of debt is terrible. Faking having luxury goods and driving expensive big car but empty pockets. Mountain ahaha this reminds me my hiking trip in Korea or more precisely « Fashion Week in the Korean mountains » I was speechless, everyone (youngsters and elders) was wearing trendy hiking clothes with the latest brand new equipment. I felt so miserable Lol
As a Finn, I feel that my situation is a lot better than whats seen in here (and read in the comments) but so it's hard to find the motivation to do anything. What is the point of working or chasing a career when at the end of the day you have to come home to a cold appartment and an empty fridge. If the only reason to work is to not starve, and no amount of savings gets me any closer to my dream of a family and my own house, then the sweet release of death doesnt seem too bad. What is even the point?
there is always another way that you can embark on. sometimes you just have to head into the opposite direction of what everybody else is saying and doing, even your family. I was at a similar point 2 years ago in Germany, but than I just cut all ties, worked a lot and manage to build something from scratch which can now sustain my living with a few hours of work each day. whatever your goals are, you can do it too
I'm agree with you. But honestly I'm just curious about life. I have a kinda nihilism but in a more postive aspect if I had to explain it. I'm just curious what will happen. I've been in some pretty dark times myself though.
Here in the Philippines, those who are fluent in Korean and can also communicate in English can have up to 100k salary per month working as a call center agent. Mostly the salary here of the Filipino employees who can only speak English in call center is around 18k to 28k per month.
I thought the words by the woman with the fashionable scarf, "Everyone is running towards the same goal" were profound. We are NOT best served by a society where diversity is not valued. When parents punish their children for wanting to go off the beaten track (if not physically then emotionally), it leads to poorer outcomes for everyone. We absolutely need our sanitation workers, our musicians, our bus drivers, and every other role crucial to making a happy and functional society.
If the same goal is earning enough money to afford a decent place to live, save for retirement and raise a family, I don't see any problem at that. Also as this video points out, not graduating from one of the very top universities means you're essentially economically stuck. Parents know this, and pushing their kids to get the best grades possible is totally understandable given this context.
As the comments have already said, this feels very similar to other first-world countries. I've been watching and reading many reports that say the same thing, but I wonder if the situation can be remedied by living outside popular cities. I'm not so sure, but this video mostly talked about Seoul and if you watch the same about the US, they mostly talk about major cities like LA and NYC. Videos about Canada mostly talk about Vancouver and Toronto. I don't live in the biggest city in Canada, but I seem to be experiencing the same issues as well. I've often wondered if my difficulties could be lightened if I was able to live far enough outside the city with an online job, however I understand the obstacles associated with that as well. I love the big city but... I just can't afford it. Why do people keep trying? I guess this is how new cities are generated: enough people being pushed out and displaced from their origins conglomerating into a new community. It's the only situation that I can visualize for myself at this time. What a headache it is to be born into this generation. Ugh. I'm worried that the majority of us are going to die tragically as opposed to naturally....
I live in Toronto GTA and feel everything is stacked up against us . I am a millenial in my thirties ... I am married with kids and even after having a good family income we just are able to get by
I saw vids that even in US towns people are struggling to live and can't find any work or just gave up. 😕 I know a neighbor who just fell flat the last few years. @@small_fries7573 I keep thinking that there has to be an answer and honestly it's probably stronger, dependent communities and decommodification: people supporting people, you get want you need and give what you don't. Lower food costs by investing in your own production system, even if you can only grow potatoes in 5 gallon buckets for part of the year? Watch your neighbour's kids every now and then? The logistics are... difficult, but it's the only way I can see out. Also, rejecting consumerism and buying better products that last longer or that can be repaired (see the right to repair arguments going around rn). Ofc a lot of this only works for people who can spare the investment (time or capital) costs. For the people that can't, I suppose the point is that they need more support than others. I believe that if you can help bring those people back up, you will see a net positive return be it directly or indirectly. Wishful thinking, anyway.

Living with high expectations is the biggest hurdles in life. Everyone around is successful but not I/we, comparing with them and everyday is a like living in a hell also indirectly torturing is intolerable. Being living a like failure infront of them is biggest obstacle😔.

Occupational polarization is also attributable to the extreme polarization of jobs. Graduating from a professional or prestigious university and getting a job at a large company is expected to earn at least $100,000 per year, but other jobs require a salary that is difficult for one person to survive. After all, in a society where everyone, except for about 5% of the population, is a failure.
Korea is somewhat similar to my country, Philippines. People do mind social status and your wealth. They don’t care if you struggle. What they cared about is money, money, money. I used to live in the Philippines, left the country for 5 years and now companies won’t hire me because of my age and thinking that I will be back to Portugal anyway. Such discrimination and selective process these companies have in the Philippines. Meanwhile in Portugal, I worked as a receptionist and an all - around staff working alone in the hotel, basically managing by my own, worked in company where they promoted me as manager but eventually quit due to mental breakdown. I have saved some money but I would rather choose my health than a job that will drain your body and soul. I am in the Philippines for some months winding down and getting an increase of anxiety since I am going back to Portugal once more. Where i can get job easily compared to my homeland. How I wish that the world don’t make it too harsh for our generations, but that’s a wishful thinking that might not come true.
It is alright to be concern or not know about what happens after this life. Fortunately there's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, and not to get tired anymore. Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body to the core! Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life. All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him!
Watching this and reflecting on myself. Wow, I feel incredibly grateful and a bit ashamed for being in such a good position (on the ladder of my dream career, with a good and flexible job, and being in an environment without such extreme competition), while knowing there's so many people my age out there working 10 times harder but still struggling to make ends meet. Too often I find myself taking things for granted, I wonder if I can survive in such a make-you-or-break-you society. Nothing but admiration and respect for the peeps in the video plus millions out there, may one day you'll all gonna make it!
Why are you watching a vid like this? are you just wanting to humble yourself or something? I know I watched b/c I was hoping to learn strategies on how to cope with a similar situation.
This seems to be the norm everywhere now. They just published an article last week that a side hustle has become a necessity in my country Namibia. It’s hard to find a second job here so side hustles are the thing. People are so exhausted because our regular jobs are already overworking us and now we have to hustle after work and on weekends just to get by. Even people that have high paying jobs are struggling because prices keep going up everyday. Young people with degrees and good jobs can’t even afford to live on their own, let alone buy a house or some other property.
Totally agree. Even in America I have to work two jobs to survive and both husband and wife have to work. You need two income. Housing is expensive everywhere in big cities and the really good jobs you have to fight to get it with so much competition. For one good job posting I can guarantee you there's at least 1000 people applying.
@@jonfreeman9682 Everything you said, same here. Gone are the days of living on one income. Even those wanting to stay home to raise their kids while the husband work can’t. I lived in the DMV area and Arizona for years. Arizona was one of the most affordable states. You could get a really nice apartment for $600-700 and even $400 in the low income areas. But I hear that’s no longer the case. It seems Everything doubled. Over here many people are leaving to big city to go to the more rural areas and smaller towns. Maybe not the best jobs but it’s much more affordable and one can get land more easily to even grow some food.
It's not just south korea it's in every country for example in India the compitition is extremely high for jobs, plus only 1 percent could get decent salary jobs others will get just penny paying jobs even after doing masters. And housing cost is rising tremendously compared to any other countries, now it costs more than 4 to 5k USD to get a decent 3BHK apartment for rent and to purchase it you need pay almost 5 to 6 million USD approx in cities like Mumbai, gurgaon and Bengaluru where average salary is just 600 USD per month. So In india the compitition and expenses is beyond any country, salaries are like Uganda but costs of the products and houses are like the USA.
As an Indian high school student .. I can relate to this , As growing high competition in society as well as in schools many students getting less than 3 hrs of sleep 😢 including me, it became very hard for the students to manage school, tuitions, online classes, tests etc 😵 Nowadays it became very hard to get a university in India 💯

Korea is all about education to get that dream job that do not exist. My korean parents thought after college your life will be set like it during my parents' generation. Came to US at age of 12 in 1992. Graduated with a stem degree from UCSD. Even here it's becoming like that. Glad my wife and I are childless. Can't imagine how life will be in 30 yrs.
Agreed! Me and my husband agreed to only have our one child that we currently have. It’s nearly impossible to raise more children and have saved funds for their future. Degrees have no meaning unless it’s in business or some sort of STEM program. The more hours you put in work the more you get taxed. Doesn’t make any sense. We work together as a couple to get by and provide for our child.
Yeah it’s not just there in Korea, same thing here in the USA. I’ve lived similar journey. Here in the Tristate area they call them SRO’s where you share living space but have a tiny room. It’s better than nothing but the rising cost of living and endless money printing is causing this issue. Nobody has enough money for anything therefore the money is essentially worthless.
Life is unfair, some people fight really hard and work overtime because they really care about others and doing things right, but still they earn way less than people in the same position. A lot of people who are intelligent, changes things for the better for everyone around them but gets nothing back for the hard work they put in.
I agree. It's same in the usa. And then there are also many Americans who just gave up on their jobs and society. They just fell flat at home like one of my 50 year old neighbor, Brian.
How many years since singer Seo Taji sang about this in 'Classroom Idea' and more recently BTS in 'Baepsae'? Young Koreans are so aware but seem helpless to change the expectations dictated by Seniors in society. Is it no wonder the birthrate is going lower and lower while suicides increase? I don't know what the answer is. I admire the country from afar, but would not want to grow up under such duress.
A lot of people romanticise the thought of living in South Korea especially with the rise in popularity of kdramas but in reality life there is difficult. I am from NZ and spoke with a client from Sth Korea, i asked him how life was back in his home country, he said "it was shxt, I'll never go back" He is working jere in NZ an earning at livable wage. I hope everybody succeeds in life whether its financially, mentally, physically.... All the best to all,. especially those in despair, you will get through the tough times.
You might want to consider emigrating overseas or secure an overseas job remotely or on site - seriously, its not worth your mental and physical wellbeing to let yourself be dictated by a society that prioritises status, wealth and appearances so much. You go and set that standard for your own life - and I hope you don't let external factors determine how you want to live your life and recognise your worth as a person. I hope you can find joy outside of that infamous Korean societal pressures.
I live in Japan and have a South Korean coworker who plan to live in Japan forever. God he’s so happy here in Japan He’s such a smart guy. And now I understand, as he’s from such a competitive environment.
@@balabanasireti FYI Japan has a lower than world average working hours, and a much more affordable housing while people already earn more than Korean, Japan also has no wealth distribution problem like chebols in Korea - that means the GDP of Japan are fairly distributed among Japanese. If you're an Asian you'll have the best childhood/teens in Japan as it's not that competitive like the video describing Korea.
11:58 you must do your absolute best since childhood. this is why koreans that come to america have a higher chance of succeeding economically. many of my korean friends excelled at school, were also doing after school tutoring and korean school on the weekends. they tended to befriend themselves because they shared the same culture as other koreans. when they have been performing in korea for years, they use those skills to succeed in the US.
Research indicates that optimizing work hours by incorporating more leisure time can enhance overall productivity. It's comparable to efficiently managing your laptop battery-running it until it's nearly depleted and then charging it for just five minutes won't yield optimal results. Similarly, finding the right balance between work and leisure ensures sustained energy and focus, ultimately leading to increased efficiency and accomplishment.
feel bad for those people who live in 3rd world country but with gucci bag, look at them having apple watch, iphone but miserably life. meanwhile me living in truly 3rd world country not having those luxury stuff but able to live comfortably.
As a student in South Korea, even as an early adolescent, it is VERY competitive. Even if you receive A+ in every subject, you must go to numerous hagwons/academies to have a chance at entering a good university. Thus, many people are planning to go abroad, but that also causes more competition. It's the same as it is in Korean schools. You must be a top student, take some kind of extracurricular activities like debate, speech, instruments, sports, etc, and have financial suuport. I can see some of my classmates and friends say that sometimes they want to disappear for a few minutes. Not die, but be free of all the worries and stress for a few moments.
If you'll once try living in a muslim country, you'll find out what is life. Even tho the country I live in is not that developed but even the poorest people in my country have bigger homes than average people in korea. even if they have less, they thank God that they are not among the starving, also we help poor people, it is one of the biggest sin to not give a portion of your money to poor people. People here don't take their career, making money or looking beautiful as their purpose of life, they have much more things to do. We have big families, like every couple atleast have 3-4 kids and some have 6-8 but guess what they are happy. The good thing is that people here are not ashamed to do small jobs, from polishing someone's shoes, to being a maid in someone's house, from being a tailor or having a stall at roadside where they sell fries or any snacks, from being a plumber or mechanic to a hairdresser in a parlour everyone is doing something without allowing their desires of big achievements to kill themelves. That's why Muslim countries have the lowest suicide rate, this life which is a test, is just of few days and we'll soon die, so better be satisfied and happy in what you have instead of stressing or losing yourselves in order to acheive the best. Our lives will become much more peaceful if we make pleasing God our goal instead of pleasing people, people are ever ungrateful. (Quran 49:13): "O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware"
The social status in SKorea is very stagnant, ie low social mobility. That’s why the term stuck generation is used to describe them. Where the wealthy and political elites can have their children be sent to better education and outside of Korea or be getting a government job and the poor is hard to compete with the wealthy and powerful. nepotism is at an extreme.
I'm from Canada. People here also work 2+ jobs, especially when they're young. They aim to save enough money to make a down payment on an apartment/condo, or to pay for their school tuition. Many university or technical college graduates have large student loan debts to pay off. Although the minimum wage here is much higher than in Korea, people still struggle. The only way to get ahead is to become a high-paid professional or successful entrepreneur. If you can earn over $120,000 a year, you may not need a second job. If you earn less, you need to live very frugally with lots of house mates to share the cost of living, or in a rural area, or in a vehicle instead of an apartment. There are lots of homeless people in Canadian cities.
Isn’t this just a modernized version of the Joseon society in which people were literally life-bound into whatever socioeconomic caste their ancestors inhabited? I feel so sorry for the majority of these people who did all that society claimed would give them a better life only to find themselves being slowly locked into semi-permanent lower level servitude. But I hope they come to realize it doesn’t have to be this way. I hope they can begin experimenting with group/collective efforts to break the economic chains being placed on them. At some point more young people need to refuse to participate in this “Hell Joseon” society that only benefits a select rich upperclass.

Hey everyone. I want to address the misconception that this issue is exclusive to Korea. First of all, the statistics show. I lived in both Korea and the U.S., I've observed how Koreans tend to be judged by external factors like their appearance, occupation, residence, income, and even their facial features. While some countries may have similar situations, it's important to note that Korea's societal norms can be uniquely suffocating. It feels reminiscent of the way people are treated on social media, and the prospect of living there again is daunting.
Thats not just in Korea, its happening here in India too where govt and corporates want people to work 90-100 hrs week. Its a sign of collapse of global civilization. We are in last stage capitalism where nothing matters to companies and government except for minting more and more money
So the problem is the government or corporations? Nah, the problem are the people, all of them want more than the other to show of in mercedes have a bigger apartment etc. There is the problem.
This is happening to most developed countries. Youths are living such crushing depressing hopeless lives. And people are surprised when the new generation refuse to have children lol. Why subject innocent children to the same torture.

Korea is a very materialistic country and it's because everyone judges each other. The country will not change until the government and the society realises this. I live in Malaysia and feels so blessed to be here. We just wear pyjamas to go out without being judge. Anyway, I'm rooting for all the young koreans 💪🏻💪🏻
There are two other major factors that contribute to this. 1) everyone wants to live in Seoul or the greater Seoul metropolitan area. Nobody wants to live outside of the city, not in Busan, not in Sejong City, and certainly not all the way down in Gwangju. And forget about rural areas. Everybody wants Seoul. Can you imagine if everyone in the U.S. only wanted to live in NYC? It would be a catastrophe. 2) young people don’t want to do any manual labor. At all. Nobody wants to be an auto mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc. everyone wants to work in an office for a “global company” and if they don’t get that kind of job, they’d rather stay home and give up. By the way, in Seoul, auto mechanics charge outrageous prices for the simplest things, even an oil change, because nobody has any DIY skills in Korean society.
The competition and strife to keep up with what their society dictates among the younger ones in South Korea is the reason why more and more of them don't want to build a family. Everyone is focused in building their finances during their 20s to 40s. If the cost of living can't maintain a lone person, how much more a family? South Korea's societal problems must be looked into and people must realize they have to destroy/retire the very ideas that make people struggle everyday. So sad that changing those would take so much time, thereby more generations will suffer as years go by.
I love Korea. Went on exchange there in 2002. I thought I wanted to live there, but I saw Korean and American friends getting burnt out. It just makes me sad that so many are having such a tough time.
@14:10mins it does not matter what kind of incentives, there must be a fundamental shift in the way society's thinking about "face". Seems like homogeneous societies like the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans all face the same problem of "losing face". I wonder if Confucianism has a part to play in how these societies are defined. I'm no expert in sociology so it's just my opinion I'm surprised these youths featured here are finding ways to bring meaning to their lives by having plans for the future instead of feeling sorry for themselves. Good job guys. Keep living
I've had to start over from scratch from a kid, moving from place to place, meeting new people. Now I live in a homestead taking care of animals, farming, almost in a reservation. It is difficult and quite challenging at times, but once the dust settles it is all worth. My way can get some getting used to but it has kept me more relaxed and less anxious than most of my experiences.
The fact this could have been my husbands life just puts everything into perspective….. this is so concerning… I have friends in S. Korea and they often remind me how blessed I am to live in the US where some of these things are not stressed as much as it is there (social and cultural pressures of status wealth and beauty ) . I pray it gets better. This is truly heartbreaking and heart wrenching🙏🏾 ❤️🩹
Lost my brother due to his short sleep habits. He did 3 jobs with only 3 hours of sleep too and died at the age of 28 due to high stress causing a brain aneurysm
I’ve had a similar way of living, I would work and stay-up without sleeping at all for 3-5 days straight and sleep for 12-24 hours. Rinse and repeat for nearly a decade, only to end up in a looney bin, because I started hearing voices and my already existent anxiety hit a new high. But I don’t regret it, because atleast I had a social life and money, nowadays even if I sleep better with a cycle, due to work hours, I don’t have a social life anymore.
It's definitely heartbreaking to see the tough conditions that Korean youngers are experiencing. Eastern Asia countries should find their ways to create a sustainable society for next generations! Hope we can make it, brothers and sisters.🙏

Living in a small space definitely affects mental health. As a Filipino immigrant in the UK i rented rooms throughout my 17 years here to save money. I can never afford to rent a flat due to The high cost of living in London. I would be working and existing just to pay rent. My saved up money was used to build a house in the Philippines and I lived there for a year living in my own home with my own room, living room, kitchen, toilet, extra room, had a pet, can tend plants, patio, good weather, ensuite room, garden etc. I felt contentment. I am not rich but to have the space makes so much difference. I also dont mind living in hut with acres of farmland😅. Living in cramp overcrowded big cities affrcts your health. Prior to moving to the UK, I taught English to Koreans. They were amazing people. The material things, the prestige, the wealth and the fame that we are all chasing are all temporary. If we think about it, we are doing all these to please other people. Please God only and your soul will be at rest. Life is not in this world. Hope we all find peace and ❤ love.
The worst I had to do was 6AM to 10PM for like 3 weeks. I was a helper. Hardly did anything. I was 18 years old. It was a hot job. Everybody was getting paid double. $1200 a week was good enough for me back 2003.

Atleast the 1st girl is doing her best. The doc says her monthly salary from 2 jobs is close to $4,200, & her monthly expenditure is about $900. And she saves rest for opening her own convenient store. And she will do so in a year. With her dedication, she will be OK.
Haha that’s extremely optimistic. There are many factors against her. Extreme sleep deprivation, inflation, and poor mental health I think the most appropriate action would be to focus 100% on one specific job, particularly her web design role rather than having 2 jobs and basically screwing your body over. The fact that she’s getting scolded for her mistakes and poor performance implies that she’s not doing well in her first job which is probably because of how exhausting a 2 job routine is, hence she would not be chosen over others who focus entirely on their role and would easily perform better than her. Rising costs wise, I think it’s definitely necessary to cut down on expenses drastically for a few months as she gets her life in check. Maybe checking with her relatives if she could borrow a bit, or live with them for a while. Personally, it would not make sense to start a business when you’re struggling with costs. A single unfortunate event or anything involving her already poor health would basically shut down any chances she had. You can’t expect a sleep deprived, desperate person to be rational though.
« She will be ok » LMAO sleeping 3 hours a day with 2 jobs ?!? She is ruining her health (psychologically and physically) and will eventually get a burnout.
I visited Korea in 2021 and it is a society that judges others instead of for who they are and I don’t think I could live in those little bitty apartments or anything. I tried staying at a little house and oh my God it’s so small you can’t breathe And the cost of living your food is somewhat cheap still but you can’t afford a house or anything and I think that’s so sad but you know it’s some of those young people that are the judges if you’re not dressed to the nines they look at you like you’re an outcast. I think it’s the young society that makes the society has a debt.
What I just realized this year is that I rather die of lack of sleep than die poor. I want to live my life comfortably thats why I work hard. I want to have the ability to have regular spa days, eat good food and travel.
If you even get to that point and a big IF you’re long term health will suffer greatly because of that and you won’t live long. You definitely won’t be healthy to enjoy it.
I worked at a company in Korea that required a university degree, and my visa is only given to Native English speakers from seven countries. My salary ranged from 2.4 to 2.9 mill won which tracks with the video. Before the pandemic that salary was okay, because I didn’t pay rent, and only wanted to save about one million won a month. The rest was used for expenses and trips. If I wanted to save to buy an apartment it would be impossible. It is depressing that students need to study so hard to try to get into a chaebol company, just to live somewhat comfortably, but it still isn’t enough to buy an apartment.
Imo, rentals are the biggest perpetrators for wealth disparity within a nation. Rent effectively eats up 1/4-1/2 of your salary. Situation is made much worse by investment companies that mass buy property for the goal of leasing, which drives up housing prices, which drives up rental costs, and lowers the amount of available property on the market for normal people
I used to work security for 7 years, always 12 hour days 5 days a week, from 6am to 6pm (or night shifts, which were the worst). I'm only 30 years old and it was a miserable way to live. PSA: Sleeping three hours a day will KILL YOU. Don't do that.
@@captlancThe lack of sleep is terrible. And can lead to depression or suicide tendencies.

I find the capitalist culture of working hard, earn money, get stressed, buy things you don’t need, work harder.. repeat. It’s an empty existence.

@Miyankochan
Also, lack of sleep + heavy machine operation is very much a no no.
İts a part of Asian culture I guess. I would choose to be homeless instead of living this sht.

Unbelievable ...
in the course description it said we will be graded not only by Test results , but also attendance and assignments
this Proffessor ...did not grade anyone based on all of these points. either an F or a D+
and imagine if you have a University with mostly Proffessors like that...
that Proffessor even (practically bragging) said that... last year she had a student that begged her not to give her an F because she will lose her scolarship.
so in Hankuk University there is a Proffessor going rouge ,grading most of her students F ....and no one can do anything about it because it seemed like she "knows a suit upstairs" (understand?)
I truly can see how ppl get demoralized and depressed.
they are holding their own youth back.
it is a good University and mostly good experiance but I did have this experiance.
after seeing this I almost felt like it is my duty to type this here so it is known.
saying AnYthInG ~ negative sounding about a University of theirs ..and you can forget ever going back there.
so I had this fear but not anymore after seeing this.
they need to Not hold back their youth.
Thank you for sharing your story. As a college student in the US I had also run into a couple of bad professors, but hearing how it happens to that extent in your case is awful
@@khatuuuu also here in Hungary we have these type professors.
I didn't mean to make my comment seem too "anti-Korea" but the severity is definitely worse there , is my opinion.
It's look like subtle bullying and sadistic behaviour. 😂 Bet the professors really enjoying to see people suffering, begging and asking for mercy.
Abusing power they have to get sense of power and control over others. To feel powerful and superior. 😂

Absolutely true. We don't need more technology development. We don't work harder anymore. But they need money and they control us.
In US too? I'm surprised to hear that. I was in US for 1 month (many many years ago) as a trainee before returning to my home country in Asia. I got the impression that my US colleagues were pretty easy going when it comes to their working hours. They can leave their office , anytime they liked, when they liked. I was in the manufacturing sector back then
The result of capitalism…
I think we are in the last phase of capitalism
Then what are the good jobs out their
It is hearbreaking to see these young people struggling in life.
At least they're not homeless. I know a lot people who sleep on car even with stable job.

Not everyone is wired to be a doctor or an engineer. Promote people following their passions and with the built in work ethic it would be a much happier and prosperous society.

It's obviously easier said than done, but we should at the very least strive for it

that's the issue when a country develope too quickly. wages just cannot keep up with living cost, especially housing. young generation flocks to the capital where the main korean economy is based at, driving the housing cost & renting cost insanely high. if the government can spread out the headquarters of the big companies to other cities, it may be a little bit better. if korea keeps their current low fertility rate trajectory, it would be a more serious problem in the future.

Very true, their amount of debt is terrible. Faking having luxury goods and driving expensive big car but empty pockets.

He's like 50 y.o. & doesn't wanna go out to public unless it's Home Depot or Lowe's. He's secluded himself from society along with his wife. Luckily their son works & supports them.

The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven.
But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps:
1. Realize that you are a sinner who CAN'T SAVE YOURSELF from going to the lake of fire (forever) 🔥 based on your good deeds, your own philosophy, and other religions.
2. Realize that you need to believe in your heart ❤️ that ONLY Jesus Christ died for your sins.
If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart ❤️ that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart ❤️ man believe unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

I'm surprised 😮. Filipino aren't as superficial from what I noticed.
It is alright to be concern or not know about what happens after this life. Fortunately there's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, and not to get tired anymore.

I don't know what the answer is. I admire the country from afar, but would not want to grow up under such duress.
A lot of people romanticise the thought of living in South Korea especially with the rise in popularity of kdramas but in reality life there is difficult. You might want to consider emigrating overseas or secure an overseas job remotely or on site - seriously, its not worth your mental and physical wellbeing to let yourself be dictated by a society that prioritises status, wealth and appearances so much.

(Quran 49:13):
"O humanity!
Same thing happening here in the Philippines. Prices getting more costly, but wage isn't going up, literally working 2 jobs day and night

Boomers be like: "When are we going to finally have grandchildren" lmao
How funny is that, you’re a practical joker, dummy 😂
they won't have grandchildren and never will
This is their grandchildren🖕
Never hahahh
The worst I had to do was 6AM to 10PM for like 3 weeks.
I was a helper.
Hardly did anything.
I was 18 years old.
It was a hot job.
Everybody was getting paid double.
$1200 a week was good enough for me back 2003.
Life is unpredictable and issues usually come up. Anyone from any age is not guaranteed tomorrow. Even young people should think 🤔 about heaven ✨️ or hell 🔥.
Therefore if you want to spend eternity on heaven after your life here on earth 🌎, you should believe in your heart ❤️ that Jesus Christ is your Savior. If you don't, you will miss going to heaven and end up in the lake of fire. It is terrible so I beg you to make the only correct decision for God to allow you to go to heaven. Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. 🙏 Have a nice day.

I can tell you the process of what happens when you die because I've had a near-death experience.

@small_fries7573 If I'm lying, may I burn in eternal he'll.
This happened March 7 2007.
My soul came out through my mouth, it was like the loudest thing ever.I had no form.l kept floating upward to outer space.
Everything was dark, not close your eyes dark but dark.
Then I see a white dot,I'm floating towards it.I can hear my Mom crying and then somebody pulled me back.
@@EdwinTheGreat337 thanks 4 sharing bro. I don't know exactly what to say. Have a nice day though!
4:35 I've been there. There's a way out. But it takes a lot of effort. And years of work. And a good company to work in.
Seung gyu has a good heart, I hope that he is able to help more people with their struggles.
Extreme sleep deprivation, inflation, and poor mental health
I think the most appropriate action would be to focus 100% on one specific job, particularly her web design role rather than having 2 jobs and basically screwing your body over.
@@letstalkaboutit88-j4wCompletely agree with you. Couldn’t have said it better.
@@hikjee Thank you
You mean $42,000/month or $4,200 ?
Before that I was a professional chef for 10 years. I've never had a normal 9-5 job in my whole life because nobody would hire me, but I made do however I could.
It's not easy, and I wish I could find a better job, but that's reality I guess
"Competition in Korean society is tough." ...... I remember Koreans saying that about 20 years ago. I have a feeling they will continue to say so for a long time to come.
