Chongqing - Nightlife in the Chinese megacity | DW Documentary

- If you want to experience China, you can't avoid Chongqing. This megacity is growing at a blistering place. But beware, it is not a place for anyone with a fear of heights, or a sensitive stomach.
The population of Chongqing, in southwestern China, has exploded over the last 30 years: now, some 32 million people live here. Covering an area the size of Austria, Chongqing is one of the largest cities in the world in terms of physical size.
In China, the megacity has become a tourist magnet. It’s known for its unique spots for snapping photos, like the train that runs right through the eighth floor of a high-rise building. Social media influencers have contributed to popularizing the city, once known mainly as an arrival or departure point for cruise tourists.
The people of Chongqing have a reputation for being particularly warm-hearted. City guide Zhen Jili, for example, knows every corner of his city, and has witnessed first-hand how his "big village" became a megacity. He takes visitors through his remarkable metropolis, where GPS is useless, because you never know which floor your destination is on.
Professional "designated driver" Shen Xun takes the film’s viewers along on his journey through Chongqing's raucous nightlife, where the party doesn‘t end until morning. Because there is a strict ban on drinking and driving in China, anyone who has had a drink can call Shen Xun. He then arrives on his little folding bike, which he stows in the trunk before chauffeuring his customers home in their car.
Livestreamers like Paipai can be seen on every street corner in Chongqing. She explains why livestreaming is a billion-dollar business in China, and takes viewers to one of the city's tallest buildings, for a view from right in the middle of the skyline.

I'm from a small town in Canada and marvel at how one city can have more people than our entire population. Lol! Incredible!
Canada has 41+ million people
Chongqing has under 15 million people living in the urban area, the rest live in rural areas. It is 150 times the size of Toronto, and 13 times the area of The Greater Toronto Area. it is a technicality. It would be like combining Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC, and their suburbs, and call it a city with 36 million people.
@@zigzag00 true, and Chongqing should not be called a city. Greater New York City has 4000 square miles of land. Chongqing has 35,000 square miles of land. It is like calling Florida a city.
If you're not too woke, I highly doubt you will like that massive woke in a pink city.

Finally someone with credibility speaks the truth about China. Chongqing, Guangzhou, Beijing , Shanghai, Xian, Kunming , Urumqi, Hangzhou, …. So many cities and so diverse. It’s very safe, cashless economy using a super App, subways ,high speed trains ,cabs hailing , amazing food , incredible infrastructure, friendly peaceful and helpful ppl. All very affordable. A treasure trove for great adventures. Welcome to all and enjoy your stay.
that is definitely true🥰
Just don’t cross the government.
@@gzahnd Now why would you if they brought 800M ppl out of poverty. Built the best high speed rail , subway , infrastructure, created a cashless economy , made ir safe 24/7 anywhere you go, made cities green with EVs, electric buses, cheap and affordablel living , 5G everywhere, , excellent services Didi and food delivery etc. Their cities are unmatched. And all this with 1.4B ppl. Countries with 60M cant even do 1/2. The govt have served the ppl well. Ofc there are exceptions, but a large majority are happy.

Chongqing is utterly stunning.
No I m sorry but no stunning is rio de janeiro that is stunning.. Does the city even any ancient structure because i dont want to see a cheap copy of NYC london but if you have ancient past structures taht is different like pyramid of the sun in mexico city..
@@RM360CR comparing Chongqing to Rio De Janeiro is like comparing 2008 Olympic opening ceremony to 2016 Olympic opening ceremony...
@@RM360CR Instead of relying on imagination, it's better to buy a plane ticket to Chongqing!
Chongqing is not entirely composed of modern architecture, but has also preserved many ancient buildings!
@@RM360CR Many people do not know that ChongQing was the capital of China. when Japan invaded China and occupied Nanjing (the capital of China), Chinese nationalist army moved to this city as the capital to resist Japanese invasion. Chongqing was bombed and air-raid by Japanese fighters, but was never occupied by Japan.
@@RM360CR During the Anti-Japanese War, in 1937, as the Nationalist government moved inland, more than 30 countries in the world anti-fascist alliance, including the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain, France, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, successively opened embassies in Chongqing. In addition, more than 40 countries and regions established foreign affairs agencies in Chongqing.
Please don't dub people speaking English but not necessarily doing so perfectly. Just use subtitles, please... It's important to hear the person's voice.
I personally watch these documentaries because they dub over the English language. I often only get to watch documentaries when doing chores and can't read subtitles enough to keep up with what's being said. This is just another perspective.
Having traveled to five continents and most large cities in the world, I can responsibly say that Chongqing is the world's only mega city (pop > 15 million) that is not built on boring flat topography. The city's landscape, verticality, two large rivers crossing mountains, urban vibes, and the blending of past and future, tradition and modernity are unparalleled by any large city in the world.
A chinese in China speaking german...that's more impressive than the city
and a German speaking fluent Chinese, that's even more impressive.
There are German language major in all Chinese foreign language colleges, and many language institutions.
@fdjw88 Many German auto companies have factories in Xinjiang. So, it isn't so impressive.
We often imagine a future city like this, but never knew it already existed.
We imagined it as a warning, it is called Dystopia.
fake spambot.
it's culture. chinese confucian culture is behind all these bs, work hard, move up in life, respect the elder, etc... In the USA, I'm so tired of all the crimes, vandalizing, homeless, drug addicts, illegals immigrants, etc.

@@JeffBilkins You imagined the slums in such a metropolis as a warning. But in Chongqing there is no slum. Even in the poorest regions called urban villages in Chongqing, people have cheap and reliable water, power and Internet, being safe to walk outside after midnight, able to find a job with satisfying payment.

great documentary! I used to visit my grandpa who lived in Chongqing once a while during my childhood. it was not nothing like this. How exciting transformation!
Wow. I'm from a small town in India. It amazes me how different are peoples lives in distinguished places. I loved it. I love seeing human beings living their life so differently though we live in the same world.

the best time to visit Chongqing is during winter. yes it was cold. but hey, that was when the hotpot taste more delicious. believe me, you don't want to sit infront of the fireplace during summer
Yeah, I made the mistake of travelling through China during summer 2023 right after the easing of the lockdown. That would such a big mistake. There were parents taking their kids on their first holiday and CQ was a pain to navigate. Hiking up and down 10 stories of stairs just to get to different sightseeing spots was not fun! 😅 My clothes were drenched all the time either by rain or sweat.
I watched the video yesterday and watched it again just now. The whole city looks like a gigantic Disneyland park, so surreal 😂
Go to Shenzhen and you will find it's even more crazy, like living in 2050
Disneyland Park is safer, more fun, but not as free. The food there is quite expensive, and not so great.
Documentary made by DW about China is normally negative. it is so rare for DW to produce something about China that is positive. What a surprise!
indeed...what sorcery is this?!
Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary. Beautifully shot and narrated. why did you give a voiceover for the gentleman who spoke good English at the Raffles building though?
First time I see Western media reporting something positive about China.
Im from Pakistan, learning Chinese for fun. I am at level A but I'm improving gradually. I wish to visit China and have a chat with the locals. ❤
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! We’re really glad to hear that. Best of luck with your learning journey!
I’m fascinated with how nearly dystopian this city looks and feels.
Every City in China is Huge , clean , advance technology and infrastructure is in another level. Like Chongqing,Shenzhen,Guangzhou, Shanghai,Hangzhou, Chengdu , Beijing,Tianjin, and many More.
When both DW and BBC suddenly making films to promote Chinese tourism, u know there must be some new political deals made successfully behind doors between Chinese government and the West. I don't know what it is yet, but we'll see...
DW TV did not have Indians 15 years ago. May as well say that DW TV did the same deal with the Indian government
lol, I agree, I wish you are right, in fact, China and Germany are always good trading partners, German investment has been playing positive role in China since from 1930s, many Chinese people won't forget about this.
For sure
I think it's simple market dynamics. When there are travel vloggers who've made amazing contents in place like Chongqing, the big corporations would follow the money and start producing things themselves.
If you look at how things are report economically and politically, very little has changed.
@MErwin And read the comment section about complaints on her accent.
I love Chongqing
So cool to see the girl singing the cranberries song (I’m from Ireland where Dolores the singer is from of the original song )! This city looks amazing love seeing what china has to offer
Great documentary. Please do the same about other Chinese cities and infrastructure.
This is the only time DW did not use a gray filter when photographing China, and the only time he did not mention "human rights" or "freedom". I don't understand. Chinese people have their own culture and life. As a country thousands of kilometers away from China, why should you impose your understanding of human rights and freedom on the Chinese? China and Germany are completely different countries, and they do not pose a threat to each other. So, can't we show a little respect and understanding to each other?
I have worked as a Civil Engineer in Hong Kong, been to Tokyo, Seoul, NYC etc etc so I am not someone who have never been to a big city and Chongqing still blew me away.
Finally DW is learning its lesson and understanding that China bashing is not the way to go!
说的对!🎉不黑了,网络强大到它们骗不了了!
Not quite….DW still bashed abit. They just had to emphasise about China government not allowing them to film LGBT community and the girl signing some song……..true or not, we wouldn’t know.
I personally think it’s bullshit….
Their propaganda is well embedded in the documentary unlike BBC which is too obvious.
I'm confused isn't the Singaporean speaking in English, why does he need a voice over of what he is actually saying?
Really good storytelling about Chongqing the city I grew up . Hope DW can have more this type of real Chinese story about the people and life there, not just politics views

ChongQing is a mountainous city, normally, no one would build a city in a place like this, ChongQing was first established only as a military outpost, at about 2500 years ago, it continue to exist and became larger and larger, mainly due to military importance, a thousand year later Chongqing became the stronghold to defend agaisnt Mongols invasion, Chongqing gained its political and economic importance during Japanese invasion, it became the temporary Capital of the Republic of China when China lost all their coastal region, it remain as the "back up" city of China til today, if one day China was invaded again, the government of Chia will move to Chongqing, again
German people are very welcomed in China, most of them are honest and hard working technicians and middle managers, focus on problem solving and responsible for work. Wish more young German people to study and work in China.
For the older folks,.... ChongQing is formerly known as "Chunking"... China's ROC WWII wartime capital. ROC is now Taiwan.
People are living better lives here than Germany
Funny...I was just there a few days ago and yeah it looks amazing when the lights go on at 8.
This city reminds me of the movie Blade Runner
The direction, guidance, and integrity of a nation's leaders shape its character, which the people eventually adopt. Indonesia is truly a great country, rich in resources and filled with intelligent individuals. However, corruption here is rampant. It has become a joke on social media, which reflects the people's despair, leading to widespread apathy. If only Indonesia’s leaders had integrity and were focused on the interests of the people, the country would surely have become a developed nation like China is today. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
DW please make more of these neutral documentaries about China instead of wild propaganda every day. We love this.
A lot of people in the US think China is still an agricultural country, in the last 20 years it has dramatically changed and that younger Chinese people are more like western young people. We should share our similarities and differences and learn to appreciate each other.

When the Japanese invaded China in WWII, the Nationalist government moved to Chongqing. Air Raid shelters were dug deep into the rock because the Japanese bombed it daily. From 1942- 1945, the US Army Air Transport flew supply missions from Calcutta to Chongqing regularly over the Himalayas, in the operation known as The Hump. 600 planes were lost and around 1000 pilots died due to highly dangerous conditions including flying day and night at high altitudes, poor weather, freezing wind gusts up to 150mph, and dodging Japanese fighters. At the end of the war, after 14 million Chinese were killed during the Japanese occupation, Japan sent a military delegation to Nanjing to negotiate the terms of surrender. During that time, they were flown across China to Chongqing by Hump pilots, apparently for sightseeing, then back to Nanjing for the surrender ceremony!
