I can say with 100% honesty that when people are at the gym almost everyone is too busy dying to notice anyone else. I had that exact anxiety back when I started, now I make it my mission for people to know that it’s fully internal, no one is judging you or even watching.

This isn't related to weight, but when I came out as non-binary and stopped shaving my legs and underarms (I still look like a woman even though I'm not feminine presenting) the gym was actually the first place I felt confident to go in shorts. I got a couple of stares the first few times but you're right, most people don't even notice. It's actually a great place to go if you're insecure about any aspect of your appearance.

Shannon's parents are both big - I think a common problem with being overweight is when you grow up with both your loving parents are overweight, it really normalizes it for you, solidly in your subconscious. There's far more to it than that of course, I'd guess that obesity comes from multiple factors incl. the western diet and the copious amounts of sugar we eat

Yes. I know a lot of families where the kids are somewhat overweight and mostly it seems to be due to the parents- also larger- having normalised huge portion sizes at every meal. There doesn't seem to be a lot of awareness in the UK or US now about what is 'normal' re: portion sizes.

I'm curious how Shannon will feel about being bigger as she gets older. She's really young so it seems the health issues associated with obesity hasn't become a problem yet. I say this because I have people in my life who, like Shannon, were very happy being bigger and had no problems with having more curves. Then, they either got old enough (usually in their 30s) or big enough that their weight started to severely affect their quality of life i.e., lots of difficulty and pain walking and moving, sleep apnea, internal organs not working correctly, not being able to do anything without being exhausted quickly, etc. My bigger friends ended losing a lot of that excess weight so they could enjoy life again, instead of being mostly immobile and in pain. It became more of a necessity than a vanity issue. They're still on the bigger end and still love their bigger bodies, but they're a lot healthier now and more full of energy to do things that they want, so we're all happy with that. There is no perfect body size or weight, but there is an ideal range of how your body should function and that looks different on everyone.

Dear Shannon, you are still very young and health issues aren't showing yet. But believe me, they will ruin your life in no time. I have a friend who thought like you do. At 40, huge issues started to show up : high blood pressure, diabete and of course no chance to have a baby. It's all right, if you do not want to have children. But swallowing huge amounts of pills isn't the solution either. My eldest sister has always had weight issues, my brother and I hadn't. She lost a lot of weight after 40 to avoid harsh medication. Now, she's fine, still overweight but not obese anymore. Do not think about your figure, think about your healthy future.

She also restricted my diet. No fast food or fizzy drink. I lost the weight and my health was so much better. I think half the battle is that most parents are afraid to tell their kids the truth. Most of the parents of these obese children are overweight themselves. Hence eating problems is obviously a family problem. I was diagnosed with PCOS. Combine that with my IVF, i gained some weight. My husband decided to do intermittent fasting with me and eat healthy because he's afraid of me getting sick. It is such a sacrifice and a lifelong commitment to be healthy but a good support system who are willing to tell you the truth is so much better than someone who just wants to coddle you.

I really hate the way diet culture has turned deciding to turn eating healthier into this “miserable” thing you have to force yourself to do. At the end of the day it’s about learning how to cook healthy and delicious foods and portion control when it comes to high calorie foods. I still have things like cake and pizza once in a while but I’m not stuffing my face with it. You don’t have to deprive yourself to live a healthy lifestyle you just have to be careful not to over do it with dessert and junk food

everbody is different and so is the right way to gain/lose weight, losing weight isn't a race as gaining weight isn't a race, keep it steady you can come to the finish line one way or the other.

As someone who goes to the gym 4/5 times per week, I don't see someone and wonder 'why are they here', or 'they shouldn't be here'. If anything it makes me happy when I see people coming to the gym and they are probably at the start of their fitness journey, whether that be someone who is seen as overweight or underweight and looking to build muscle. I appreciate how daunting the thought of a gym could be, so knowing that those people have over came that and are putting the work in to make a positive change in their life is great to see.
We were all there at one point and to alot of people's surprise, the gym is a lot more friendly than people probably think. I have no problem at all with people asking me for tips, or ideas etc.
If anyone who is just starting at the gym is reading this, keep it up and remember that the days you don't want to be there are the days that matter the most. I've never did a gym session and came out wishing I didn't go and just lay watching TV.
Good luck and keep it going 👌👌😮

having a thigh gap simply shows that your upper leg bones /sockets are set a bit farther apart in your pelvis.
Even when I'm 15 pounds overweight I have a thigh gap.
If your body isn't structured that way, exercises won't do anything.
I'm convinced that the thigh gap thing was a marketing ploy for the beauty/ exercise/ diet industry.
All a person should consider is their health and believing/ knowing that you look good and are comfortable with your body.

I won't ever forget one of mine asking who would like the role of Cinderella in the end of term class play when I was also your age, and without thinking my hand raised up. The teacher turned his head to me and said ," Cinderella is little, like Debbie, Verity and Judy are, not big like you!" I felt so embarrassed and ashamed to think that just for a moment I had completely forgotten that I was the shortest but chubbiest little girl in the class, how could I have done something that was so stupid of me to do? It was most likely because Debbie, ( who the teacher picked for the part ,) hadn't reminded me that about my body in a while at the time!

One of the biggest lessons I've learned in my life is that satisfaction is a journey. Don't give up on something because you aren't completely happy yet, look for those small progressions that you are making. Maybe you have not lost any weight yet, but that fact that you started exercising and have stuck with it is a progression. Same with playing piano or another instrument. You will not master it within a few weeks, it takes time, but you are better than you were when you started every time you do it. We can apply this to anything in life. When the long term goal seems to big, just try to be better than you were yesterday and you will see, things will come in time

Naomi must be tall, at size 8-10 clothes for 11 stone weight. My weight is 10 stone and I'm size 12-14. It's amazing how much height makes a difference.

I just said the same thing. I’ve just turned sixty and now, even though I haven’t increased in weight, everything wobbles anyway. I feel like it was five minutes ago that I was 30 and my skin held everything together. But, you know, youth is definitely wasted on the young.
Oh, and I’m 5’10” and I used to be 10 stone and was a size eight at that weight. I’m nearer 11 stone now and am a 10 on the bottom and 12 on top. Height really makes a huge difference

I am now 125lbs give or take and to this day I will still occasionally hide a candy wrapper because I feel bad about eating it, worried that one candy will make me revert to old ways. Losing weight for me was/is just a much a lifestyle change as it is a mentality change to get at the root the cause and heal from what brought on the gain in the first place and coming to terms with it in order to move forward. As someone with an active BED that's resulted in obesity I hate to say this so cliche but it's really not as simple as that. If the food isn't at home, believe me I'd go out of my way to order large amounts of take away food and binge that. Or I'd go to the shops, end up getting carried away and buying so many bad snacks, bringing them home and then eating till I felt physically sick. Even if I have plenty healthy food in the fridge, I'd still order take aways. Then the amount of guilt that comes afterwards hits you like a punch in the face. It's infuriating because really I know better than that, I know what's good for me and what's not. I'm very educated in what a healthy lifestyle and diet entails but that doesn't matter. It's a coping mechanism, and emotions kind of take over sometimes. Especially after stressful days at work or just an overwhelming day. Therapy and seeking professional help is THE best way to try and work on less destructive ways to cope. I can't speak for everyone else with a BED but that's my experience.

Totally agree, I don’t have it in the house so I won’t reach for it. If you have to go out of your way to go and get it, you’re less likely to eat it. It’s a good psychological trick, when treats are in sight and within reach studies always show people eat more.
My partner loves snacks but he has to miss out on having them at home because of me 😂

Actually paying attention to the serving sizes listed, switching from potato chips to tortilla chips, from milk/white choc to dark choc, from cookies to low calorie ice cream bars and fruit has made it 1000x easier to stay in my calorie deficit. It about making smart choices in the supermarket. I get so disappointed when people complain about their weight and know they need to change but keep making the same choice... Being overweight considerably increases your changes of getting heart-attacks, strokes, High blood pressure, High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia), Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, Gallbladder disease, Osteoarthritis and the list goes on, contrary to how some obese people feel 'healthy', the stark reality is that they may face early mortality.. but it's not easy to admit to oneself that they have a problem and then to go on and address it, it can be a life-long commitment to not only change their eating practices, but to also cut down on their portions.

These women are all lovely and I love their confidence. The girl who wears the clothes that are stylish has exactly the right attitude to fashion and women should not hide away under shrouds of fabric. My only worry is their health - when nothing is wrong with you, you can afford to be happy at whatever size absolutely but when the eight causes health problems and misery - that's what turns me off towards body positivity at any size. I'm not saying you can't be happy being the size you are - just the health problems that will eventually occur.
