supposedly the band(think it was body pit or something else) was looking for a bassist at like a music store or something and they asked if he could play and he said yes even though he never touched a bass in his life. that may be why this old song is so easy
Have you guys listened to MFKR by any chance? Paul has some very complex bass lines in a lot of those songs, especially Confessions and Do Nothing/Bitchslap. It's astonishing that he just started playing bass because they needed a bass player, because the bass lines I mentioned are really crazy and not easy to play.
Being a gifted musician isn't indicated by the complexity or difficulty of how you play your instrument. Its much more to do with creativity, song writing ability and how well you play it (not how well you might play someone else's songs). When you realize this and you know what an inspirational band Slipknot with Paul Grey were (and as you rightly said, he was the driving force behind it), then you may realize what an exceptionally gifted musician this man was.
Genius is maybe pushing it a little. I don't suppose you listen to a lot of RCHP, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin? Or any band with a great rhythm section for that matter? Paul is a functional player, but I think he leans way to hard on the downbeat and doesn't really accentuate the backbeat with enough bright notes. Good bass player, no doubt, but no genius.
This man was slipknot bruh They haven't and never will sound the same without this dude Energy from the rest of them hasnt been the same either and I don't blame em You fr never get over the death of somebody you're close with when it's cut short
He knew how to play. It was before he moved to Des moines he didnt know how to play. He only played Guitarr before that but learned playing bass after he joined a band (not The pale ones / Slipknot) that needed a bassist. And after that he started learning it. This was a few years before Slipknot.
KSIdrldrl What do you mean that Corey came in and fucked everything up? By that I mean what did Corey do that fucked up Pauls bass playing or Slipknot's songs?
KSIdrldrl Although I understand the part that he didnt really get to, well do much actually bass playing with Slipknots later material I do not for one second believe you can really blame Corey for that. I mean when he joined Slipknot at first he wasnt even known for screaming (Jim didnt even knew he could untill he heard him with Slipknots demos and such). And I dont really get how you can say they turned into a generic nu metal band since it was the very fact that they were so unique and chaotic that really made them to what they became. I personally dont even know if I would class them as Nu metal because compared to other bands I heard from that genre they just sound so much more aggresive and heavy. But yeah of course I am curious to see what they would sound like if they had decided to go for a more funk-genre. But they made the choice not to and it wasnt because Corey of all people pushed/forced them to it xD
KSIdrldrl its really not crazy at all, He already know how to play guitar, he can do chromatic on bass & as long as he know notes, won't take long to get used to play bass for a metal band. unless if its a jazz band, or any band that require fancy technique on bass
That's what caught my ear about Slipknot with the little base lead because what metal band can you actually hear the base and then all the sudden there's this crazy little jazz bass breakdown section
I love the fact he actually takes the time out and teaches people how to play the song, Then does it over again slower. How many musicians take the time to actually do all of this. Not many, he seemed like such a good bloke. He will always be missed.
I watched this video after watching Corey Taylor NY Ink and this video is even harder to watch now. Corey's emotions and seeing this amazing guy is heart breaking. Paul might be dead but he lives on in our minds and Corey's heart. R.I.P Gray you will always be missed.
R.I.P PAUL from Venezuela... I never will forget your sounds and your music slipknot never will be the same without you. nine are not nine without the number two T-T

He's not the best, but he's our brother, we loved him like he was our father. Hes a god in all of our eyes from what he did for us, and Slipknot themselves.
@@nickrandles1102 Ah the feeling of seeing a comment you made a decade ago lol I think I said that because he had that Ibanez ATK bass that I wanted (and still do!) but yeah it's definitely not just the bass itself.
Look, I'm a Christian and I love metal (and found this bassist to be inspiring)...so please don't go out thinking EVERYONE who digs the big guy upstairs to be evil. I think it depends on what you call special. I wouldn't put him in a top10 of the most technically gifted, but that doesn't impress me as much as good song writing. Personally i don't like much after their first two albums but those were innovative albums in metal, in which i believe he wrote most of the music. Therefor he wasn't following the guitar, they were playing his songs, and id say a great deal of the credit for those two iconic albums has to go to this man.
well, you have to remember this is a song from 97, by the time this was recorded he had a lot more to the songs he wrote, as he wrote most of the slipknot songs
R.I.P Paul Gray. Bad times for the metal scene on earth but im sure they are rockin hard up there with Steele and Dio. 3 legends passed away in the last few moths...

Paul himself said he wasn't even a bass player. He'd never touched a bass in his life when he joined the original Slipknot lineup as a bassist. He made do and was a major CREATIVE force in the band, but he wasn't particularly gifted at the instrument. It's all about how you use the talent that you're given, however, and that's a fact.
I love how he says "BASSically" a lot
And then you know Jim is just like you know
That's the intro basically

Perfect example on how a song doesn't need to be complicated and technical to be amazing.

What a cool guy. He comes across as someone who be great to hang out with. Such a shame he's gone.
Hes was such a nice guy compared to the rest of them. To me it seemed like when the band was having differences he brought them together.
Yeah. In another video, Corey lashes out at Sid backstage then Paul tells Corey to move on or something like that.
