    Wow - I hope people aren't putting too much stock in this review - not to be too critical, but this is a bit misleading. I'm very familiar with the 6DmkII, along with some other Canon bodies and also some Nikon bodies like the D750. There's no question all bodies have some pluses and minuses. But ... no pop-up flash? Are you kidding me? It's like you're trying hard to find things to not like. As for the dynamic range, this is only truly apparent when recovering detail from deep shadow. So if you chronically under expose and plan on being saved by Lightroom then yes, you will be let down by the lower DR on the 6DmkII. That said, if you expose correctly and even better, expose a stop or so to the right you'll very easily overcome this. Add that fact to the excellent low light performance and suddenly there's a lot to like. Note also that the price of this body has come down quite a bit from its first year or so and now you really do have something to pay attention to. Also, it's the only full frame with the fully articulating screen, so if that's something useful to you then this choice is better still. If you haven't had the pleasure of using the articulating screen, you ought to try it. Amazing when you're shooting a very low or high angle and also great on a tripod. Put the screen where you can comfortably see it, switch into live view and enjoy dual pixel touch screen focus precision. This camera gets a bad rap for a few shortcomings it has, but that just creates opportunity for buyers who are able to adapt their shooting style to take advantage of the great things about this camera.

      Don't forget that the 6D sold incredibly well.
      People were asking for more entry level user features (flippy screen) and Canon delivered.
      "At the right price" this is still unquestionably the best entry level full frame body on the market. Canon delivers the best user experience by a wide margin.

    I have a Canon 7D but I'm also a Panasonic GH5 owner. I wanted a full frame to replace the APS-C, and was waiting for the 6D replacement. I was so underwhelmed that last week I went and bought a second hand but barely used 5D Mark III for 2/3 the cost of the 6D. If I didn't already have Canon glass I would have got the D750.

      From a film-making stand point too APS-C crops are the closest thing you're gonna get to a Super 35 that the cinema and indie-cinema industry uses. a6300 is a great choice! but an a6500 would be best i think. Unless you wanna enter the cinema-grade cameras lol, then you'd probably go back to canon C-hundreds lineup or go sony FS lineup.

      The 6D Mk ii will be a top seller,for a very good reason. It is an excellent camera and a lot of fun to use. I really love the noise floor, as it makes high ISO pictures look almost noiseless. The number of complaints about this camera proves that people just like to rag on a camera they don't have. I have never heard so many complaints from people who don't own the camera, and therefore not as qualified to make critical comments as someone who owns one. :-)

    • @myshow4782
      @myshow4782 7 років тому

      @Nunya Or...ppl like you simply buy products on pure loyalty and hate the fact that Canon has yet again let you down. The only ppl who seem to like this camera are current 6D owners frustrated their dated camera just got a "dated" upgrade. Top seller? lol sure, I doubt even you can convince yourself of that. I'm guessing you didn't pay attention to this review or many others. By the way hate to reveal a hidden truth you fail to realize, many reviewers get these products (cameras, phones, etc..) from the manufacturer and criticize the product that they themselves do not own. This helps the consumer to not make a $2k mistake (like your probably did) or make a $2k purchase. So yes, we are all qualified to comment and have an opinion even if we do not own the product since after all, we are in a COMMENTS section on youtube ;)

    Up to your eye and can't move focus points? I have never had an issue doing it with my 6d or any of my crop bodies (60d, rebel xsi). Once you get used to using the dpad it isn't that difficult. People are expecting to much from the "entry level full frame". I get that it is a lot of money priced at $2k USD but it isn't aimed at professionals who will probably be going from a 5d3 to a 5d4 or 1dx2. It does what it needs. Personally I was going to go for the 6d2 but my 6D is still adequate and I may save for another year to perhaps go to the 1Dx2 .

    I was waiting to upgrade to the 6D mkII from my 60D, and developing a collection of lenses accordingly. Given the preliminary reports of disappointing DR, I instead purchased an 80D and added the very affordable Canon 10-18mm to my collection. As exclusively a still photographer, I'm loving it. Full frame will have to wait for another day or iteration. I know I could use lens adaptors, but keeping an eye on which ones work best with what in what situations would give me hives!

      Well probably never get to know the whole truth behind why Canon's been doing this (gimping their cameras) for such a long time. Sure, they'll push their customers towards more expensive cameras like the 5D MK IV but, what if I am happy with APS-C and simply want a Canon camera that has 4K video? This way they'll ruin their business in no time. Both canon and Nikon have not yet realized that it is high time to produce the products the people want.

    I as a IT consultant love to compare different product and choose the best in that point of time. For me, I love Canon becuse it is the first camara band I used before. LIke G1, 650D.
    Now I would like to upgrade to DSLR and do some research in the market. I love the 6D Mark II feature. However, after watched different review in youtube, it is true that I may go for Nikon D750.
    Canon 6D Mark II cannot beat a 3 years old Nikon D750 with the following:
    - Dual SD card
    - number of AF points
    - Build-in flash light (as a beginner DSLR, it is useful)
    - Dynamic Range
    - Headphone plug

    I was one of those users that was getting that sinking feeling Canon was leaving us behind so I ditched them a few years back! Luckily for me I didn't have large amount of Canon glass (I wish their cameras were as good as their lenses!) to get rid of, so the transition to Fujifilm wasn't that painful. I've also got my eye on Nikon's upcoming D850 too as I've found that I really miss a big bright optical viewfinder and the better battery life (as compared to a MILC) of a traditional DSLR in a number of situations now.

      That is a perfectly sensible mirrorless camera fighter, particularly in light of Canon's attractive compact lens options: especially the lightweight EF-S and [stabilized] EF primes... which sell lightly or barely used, ubiquitously, at commodity prices. Quite possibly a winning player in what may turn out to be a sensibly profitable transition strategy to mirrorless for Canon over the longer haul. The SL2/200D surely makes more sense than current mirrorless offerings in a number of respects for many consumers.

      Get the 80D. I was about to order the 6Dii when the dynamic range problem, tests occur, so I went for the 80D, which i could sent back after the first reviews of the 6Dii would hit the net, if it would fare better.... I was on my edge here when the high iso came, but rejoiced on my 80D choice for the PP, DR
      At least after this review, I'm happy with the 80D... ALL-I video for grading (does the 6Dii only have IPB?). 7Fps,... best dynamic range in the sub 2000€ segement for canon... The DR on low iso is really good. Like really good...
      80D is the best bang for the buck right now for Canon Users, if you don't want to switch...
      I was also considering Sonys but I want a work horse and am invested in Canon lenses, which Canon's cameras are. Sony low battery life, overheating, compressed raws (but the DR is nice)....

    Interesting to see your comparison between the Rebel, the 5D IV and the 6D II in dynamic range. It made me think it would be great to see a real life comparison between sensor sizes. I shoot micro 4/3 and have always assumed that full frame would knock out my small sensor in dynamic range. But it would be really fun to see how much of a difference the sensor size really makes when you shoot portraits or landscapes.

    The 6DMKii is light years ahead of what I used for nearly 15 years. I chuckle when they say it is a entry level camera for those who is stepping up to full frame, I'm coming from a full frame 5d mkI. DIGIC II processor and a 35.8 x 23.9 mm full-frame CMOS sensor with 13.3 million pixels (12.7 megapixel effective) and a pixel density of 1.5 megapixels per square centimetre. ISO speeds from 100 to 1600 are provided, adjustable in 1/3 steps (ISO can be expanded to L: 50 or H: 3200 with a menu function). The ISO 50 setting reduces dynamic range by a stop in the highlights.

      No it's not, which is the frustrating part. No one is going to buy a $2000 camera first, and for the rest of us it's a non-starter. "Entry level FF" means nothing because FF is fundamentally not entry level.

      Joshua Koerner I don't disagree, but the A7 series is closer to where the 5D sits on the scale. So far only canon and Nikon have budget FF cameras under the flagship and pro level cameras. I do feel like people are ignoring the awesome cinema line that's designed for video first and foremost though

    I a 80D and 6D user (started with the 80D and got a budget 6D for the full frame DOF) and won't be upgrading to the mark II either. I've been wanting to sell both of the cameras and upgrade to a single body, but it would be crazy to spend that amount of money on a 6DII.
    A couple of weeks ago, I went to a Canon store to be introduced to the new camera and it was just a series of disappointments. I asked Canon's rep guy about the motorized mirror box (from the 80D and 5DIV) and it wasn't there. 1080p ALL-I (80D): not present. Not to mention 4K, max shutter speed, max flash sync speed and cards slots... even the representative couldn't believe. And we didn't even know about dynamic range...
    I guess the only Canon option I could even consider would be the 5DIV, but it's a salty one. It's crazy how little they are offering with the new 6D compared to their lineup and the whole market. They killed this series for me, handicaping the camera so much.

    Very fair review, agree with it. As a 6DM1 user, I still upgraded to the mark 2. I can confirm that details in low exposure areas are completely destroyed, it reminds me of my old 60D. I'm still happy overall though, the AF, resolution bump and the swivel screen were sufficient incentive for me to upgrade. But being $2000, almost everyone else (Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Pentax) have better bodies at the price point. The 80D is the most damning competition of all, actually. Most people looking for what the 6DM2 can do, should look at the 80D. It's half the price and basically the same, albeit at APS-C focal lengths.

    Sony a7II - 1500€ - entry level sony ff camera
    Canon 6d MK2 - 2100€ - entry level canon ff camera
    Sony a7II - 1/8000 shutter speed, 1/250 flash sync, a real IBIS, zebras, focus peaking and histogram on the evf, incredible dynamic range for the price, you can adapt every lens ever made
    Canon 6D MK2 - 1/4000 shutter speed, 1/180 flash sync, digital ibis that warp alot, no zebras or focus peaking, poor dynamic range compared to other ff cameras of the same price, you can adapt only a poor amount of lenses.
    With the canon 6d mk2 you have an articulated screen and dual pixel af but bad codec, wtf canon?
    You can find at lower price and better specs the nikon d750 or 610, sony a7 or sony a7II, a used canon 5D Mk3, or a pentax (yeah i know...)
    This camera imho is only for who has invested a lot on the canon system and don't have the money for a better model, cause canon is overpriced but has a complete all around lens system, this is what canon has, the system of third and first party lenses, nothing more because she is not that competitive when even a 3 years old nikon do a better job on the sensor side.

      CrexTV I just bought the 6D (original) over the A7 ii because of the selection and affordability of Canon and Tamron EF glass. Sony just doesn't have much to choose from in the lens department and the good Zeiss glass simply isn't affordable. Otherwise the Sony is a better body. I have a Panasonic G85 for video, so that played into my decision as well.

    i'm a Canon 5D user. Even since I got the Olympus e-p2 and then the Olympus OM-D EM-5, I've seldom used the 5D anymore. I don't think i'll ever want to use such a bulky camera again. So, I was hoping the 6D would one day become a great camera, so that I can use the excellent Canon lenses once again on a lighter, smaller 6D. However, the way Canon neglect their updates has been really disappointing.

  • @ShadowPony064
    @ShadowPony064 7 років тому +3

    This body was a little disappointing. No 4k, no headphone jack, one card slot, 97% viewfinder. I kinda expected those, given Canon's ways of attempting to funnel their users into buying more expensive equipment, but I always hoped the sensor would show the same improvements seen in other Canon cameras. Using a well worn 600D and Fuji looks a lot more attractive every day.
    I've leased a 6D and it still produces some nice results and intend to lease an 80D too. Not big on the FF hype, APSC is just fine given a fast enough lens and Fuji offers that.

If you need 4K video then go for Sony Latest brands. My images speaks the positive leap in to 6d mark ii. I am sleepless i want to use it all 24hrs. Few drawbacks here and there are on all equipments just forget it. Dear entry level Full Frame photographers , please don't hesitate, you can close your eyes and buy this camera. It's awesomeeeee !! • @SakiniCZ
    @SakiniCZ 7 років тому +4

    Even if anything else would be great, the capability to get the most in PP and the potencial of DR are too important today (the possibility to shoot in low light with much lower ISO, and then push the file 2-3EV up to get a regular image without noise, is something too good to be left when you try it and it works), so "no thanks" Canon, you have to try harder.

    • @Hubieee
      @Hubieee 7 років тому +1

      You should always try to chose the right ISO in terms of even exposure. Raising the shadows usually produces more noise than going with the ISO you need. Of course, you shouldn't overexpose when you want to maintain details in the highlights.

    • @JoshuaKoerner
      @JoshuaKoerner 7 років тому +2

      Hubieee problem is when you can't bracket shots, and have to expose for the sky and the land or whatever. There're a lot of situations where in order to get detail in one you lose the detail in the other just because of very contrasty lighting. Those plentiful real world scenarios are part of the problem-they aren't accommodated for in this camera

    • @SakiniCZ
      @SakiniCZ 7 років тому +1

      There are situations where you can´t push the ISO, and with ISO-less sensors you can do much with this method, but the DR must be there. And not even talking about wide range bracketings...

    • @5up3rAIN002
      @5up3rAIN002 7 років тому +3

      Joshua exactly. People who keep repeating the good old "learn to expose correctly!" have probably forgotten that in some real-world scenarios the scene is so contrasty that you can't expose "correctly", or the subject is moving so bracketing shots is not possible. Dynamic range is the way to go.

    OK now people are complaining about the supposedly "bad" DR and high ISO performance, saying that it's even a bit worse than the old 6D. Now first HDR mode eliminates DR issues, and downsampling 26 MP images down to 20 MP (6D resolution) might clean up some noise. Besides that:
    CanonWatch has rumors of a firmware update coming in September for the 6D mark II. And it may or may not improve DR and/or high ISO performance, or may/may not add some other feature(s) like ALL-I recording or even 4K video (but that's unlikely). The reason why I think it might help the 6D2's performance is this:
    Canon did handicap this camera to protect their 5D mark IV. Now, they either did this by using old sensor tech or by handicapping the firmware. I'm inclined to believe they handicapped the firmware; there's no reason to use old sensor tech when you can achieve the same effect with firmware. Plus with firmware, you CAN fix it in case of a huge PR problem (which Canon DOES have right now). Besides, B & H's page on the 6D mark II explicitly says that *the 6D mark II's sensor offers improved low light performance compared to the old 6D*. There's another reason why it might be the firmware's fault and NOT the sensor's. And in that case they could fix the firmware and it would be a great camera, challenging the D750. Or it might even be a slight hardware update like they did to the 5D4 to add C-LOG.
    Plus, if you notice, DXOmark has not released their scores for the 6D2 yet. Hopefully they'll wait until after the firmware update, to see what exactly the firmware update did to help the camera. Perhaps DXO is deliberately waiting for the firmware update, and that's a good thing if you ask me.

    I've been taking the 6D Mk II negative reviews with a grain of salt so far, but I'm afraid this one has put the last nail in the coffin for me. I can overlook the majority of faults and omissions, but the dynamic range is the kicker. That's the whole point for me shooting in RAW in order to bail out my poor technic, lol. Sure it's boring, it's "beige", but they're also reliable, has wide dealership network and would probably retain a better reselling value, but it's a fucking Toyota, no one aspires to own a camry. Canon is all business man. Minimum R&D, proven technology, lower manufacturing cost, maximum guaranteed return. I don't know if they're being too conservative or maybe they're trying to go out of this (camera) business. As a Canon users of 6 years man, I just don't understand their anti innovation attitude, how can you progress if you're afraid of failing. Sony might churn out half-baked innovative product that overheats every 5 minutes, but I'm pretty they're learning new stuff on every iteration of their new product.

    I used to be a 6D owner. Canon have great color, ergonomics, and menus. DPAF is incredible too. I wish they put that tilt screen on every camera. These are all good features, and I'm sure this camera is a lot of fun to shoot with, but I'm glad I didn't wait for it. It's going to be a fine stills camera. The problem is that the 6D is a fine stills camera. Even the 5D Mark I is a fine stills camera. The 60D is still a fine stills camera if your looking for a cheap DSLR. In 2017, Canon users deserve more than just a fine stills camera. I bought a 5D IV after making peace with its short comings. It had most of the things I was looking for in an upgrade (that price tag though). I can't imagine 6D owners saying that they wanted less dynamic range and subpar video features at this price. You know the difference between FF and APS-C? The high ISO of the 6D mk II is significantly better than that of the 80D, the DR may be not, but well.
      Still, there are some artistic differences as well, namely less depth of field etc.

      No, I have no idea of the differences, I just said the 80D has a smaller sensor by accident. Duh... BTW, in the video Chris says the low light performance of the 6DII is only marginally better, not significantly. DOF can be an issue IF you use FF with max aperture lenses wide open a lot , but in real life shooting, APS-C lens apertures are large enough in most cases.

    • @JoshuaKoerner
      @JoshuaKoerner 7 років тому

      Hubieee one can also use FF large aperture lenses on aps-c bodies in order to replicate that ff experience through equivalence. Hence a 24 f/1.4 would be about the same as a 35 f/1.8-2 or so.
      The difference between the original 6D and the 6D mark ii is the brand equity canon built with the former and is losing with the latter

    • @ThorDyrden
      @ThorDyrden 7 років тому +1

      Then better directly switch to an APS-C commited company like Fujifilm or even mFT from Pana or Oly for all the size benefits. Though the 80D is a great body... the Canon lens lineup is not optimized for APS-C... all the good lenses are full-frame - so they are bigger, as necessary, focal-length not really match etc.
      Sadly even the best mFT sensors seem to be able to compete with this 4-times bigger Fullframe in dynamic-range... and the X-Trans III APS-C clearly surpasses it in DR. High-Iso still may favour the 6D Mk2... but not by far - and least for my style of shooting, the times I could have needed the "night-vision like ISOs" of 6400 or higher are almost non existent.

      Mohammed Fuadh have you ever shot with D750? I had and mine was affected, however I was never able to replicate the problem myself. It is a fantastic camera. These issues are blown out of proportion

      Nikon replaces the entire shutter mechanism of the D750s that are affected. Most are affected so you can pick up a used one and send it for effectively a new camera

      Really though, why even get a FF DSLR at this point if all u can afford is the entry level one? :P This canon is basically a no-go and the 750 is getting old. Maybe Nikon does a refresh soon.

    Looking to get my first full frame camera...trying to decide between this 6D and a Nikon D780. Any recommendations?
    I’ve had a Canon T5i before..
    Primarily uses are landscapes & Portraits with some sports sprinkled in.

    You could have a d750 + Sigma Arts Prime for nearly the same money. It shows once again Canon is more interested market segmentation than anything else

    I have the original 6D and I have used it since it came out in 2013, I don't see myself will upgrade to the Mrk II, I am really disappointed the lack of 4K. I shot a lot of videos, may go SONY or Panasonic in the future

    How does compare the video quality of the 6d mark II with respect to the older 6d? One of the main issues of the 6d were the aliasing artifacts: I hope that the new models has been improved.
    Also, is it possible to manually set the audio levels, during the video recording (on the older model it was possible only before the recording)?

    Hello professor . I have some questions . Should I buy 6d mark 2 or 90d ? I need a camera can performance in low light . The reason I don't like 6d mark ii is all focus points clumed in the middle . 90d is crop sensor but it has 8 digic . They are the same price . Please help.

    The clustered AF area in the centre of the frame negates the usefulness of those 41 points.
    In essence, it's still a focus-recompose camera, which is not good when shooting wide open using faster glass.

      Canon still has the best wi-fi utility and camera software on the market, by a wide margin.
      In terms of "ecosystem" Sony and Nikon have a long way to go, I don't see that changing any time soon (snap bridge was a disaster).
      The upcoming SL2 is probably the best entry level SLR ever made, and the T7i could probably serve as a professional body for any environment that doesn't need weather sealing.

      Did you watch the video? The sensor of the 6D mk II is a setback, no doubt. But AF and settings are far superior... PhotoTec comes to the same conclusion (try to adjust aperture in Manual mode when taking photos for example...)

    Quite unfortunate that Canon consistently blows opportunities to recollect its dedicated users with a new, outstanding line of pro DSLR's with competitive, uncompromising higher end features. I never thought I'd even consider jumping ship, having shot Canon from the AE-1 at the tennis U.S. Open in NYC and the original EOS-1 35mm film. It's been "almost there but not quite" for years. Sony, Fuji, Nikon, Sigma have all SIGNIFICANTLY stepped up their game. I scratch my head with each new release, hoping that they'll get it right this time. The 5D Mk IV serves my purpose (let's not talk about those HUMONGOUS vid files). Needless to say, I'm heavily invested in Canon gear but Sony and its G master line is starting to look tempting....The crazy part is...Canon doesn't seem to give a ****.

      Puppet Master Yeah their entry level C100 mkii is $7000 AUD and still doesn't shoot 4K. Canon is cynically counting on the fact that their existing user base has made an investment in Canon lenses and is therefore hesitant to switch brands. The thing about this is Canon think they can serve a camera which is clearly inferior to its 3 year old nearest competitor. Here in Oz the 6d mkii is $2700 body only. I can get a Sony A7 ii and metabones adapter and still have change. The Sony will give me IBIS, better video, and better DR.

  • @petersagi275
    @petersagi275 7 років тому +2

    I think it would be pretty good with at least 5D IV levels of DR, but with this sensor it's a NO. DR is about the most important aspect of image quality in 2017.

      You`ll never look back, and you`ll rarely look up. You`ll be struggling with the 7`s shitty menu system all day and changing batteries every 45 minutes. And what lens will you have on that used 7r2? Shitty expenisive? Good super-expensive? Crappy adaptors ? Even comparing the Canon ecosystem to Sony`s is ludicrous.
