    A lot of people have been asking which camera should they buy. Should they get the older 5D Mark III over the NEW Canon 6D Mark II. I think I have a clear cut answer for this but this video takes a look at the specs and breaks it down from there.

    Thanks Jared, this and the 6D MkII Real World review have been a big help while looking to upgrade my trusty EOS 60D and go full frame. Most of my Canon / Canon fit glass is full frame spec as I've always kept this a possibility when buying lenses. From a crop sensor to full sensor upgrade perspective, the controls and relative focus area of the 6D MkII are pretty much what I'm used to working with anyway.
    The Raw files have also been useful, keep up the good work.

    It is somewhat laughable that an "older" tech camera isn't worthy of consideration "into the future". Let's see. Pick up any magazine from 5 years ago. I've got prints on my wall 36 x 24 shot with an XTI...hello? It is always about the image, not some tech specs. We have 2 images 3'x4' in the living room...shot with........a Canon A-10 point and shoot 7 mpxl. Everyone keeps chasing the technology. Back when the ID Mk IV hit the scene it was $5,000.00! Every Canon pro on the planet used that camera with stellar imagery from baseball to football to soccer to weddings to portraits...published worldwide. Now it is old tech....and supposedly not worthy. It is the CHEF not the PANS!

    Super informative, Jared..... I wasn't even considering a 6D mkII, but after seeing this, it's definitely in the game..... I love my Canons, and will be using it more for video - same boat as most, the 5D mkIV is perfect, but too rich for my blood. I was between a 5D mkIII and a 1Dx.... Your content has been very helpful in my search!

    Awesome video! But you have to remember that for video you can install Magic Lantern in the 5D Mark III, and with that you can shoot RAW and 4K (in 21:9). So, for video I would go with the 5D Mark III all day

  • @PeopleAlreadyDidThis
    @PeopleAlreadyDidThis 6 років тому +28

    Thanks for the comparison, Jared. After years away from SLR photography, I'm here because I wanted to see someone's answer to this specific question because one of these bodies may become my purchase. It's fascinating to see that so many things haven't changed at all since the 70s and 80s (including the hair, lol?), as camera recommendations are still made based on "newer is better" and comparisons of a list of features and numbers. It's just like when I was buying my first Canon film gear in the early 80s. I'd love to see an honest comparison of image quality and dynamic range between these two bodies. I appreciate that there are fundamental differences in features, especially autofocus and video. But even I, the last guy in North America to shoot film regularly, know that pixel count isn't a tell-all measure of sensor superiority, and that a certain newer sensor isn't necessarily better than a particular older one. I've read that the 6D II has shadow or dynamic range issues at low ISO. So is the 5D III better in this respect? Does the 5D III exhibit lower noise? At what ISOs? Bottom line, what's the nitty-gritty answer about the photos (and to a lesser extent, the videos) these bodies will produce, under all conditions of light?

    • @JoshuaMorgan
      @JoshuaMorgan 6 років тому

      The 6D Mark II does indeed have an external microphone jack. What it _doesn't_ have is a headphone jack which is for monitoring audio. I don't think most (if not any) other DSLR's have that so it's a mute point. If one wanted to monitor the audio they were getting, it would make more sense to simply get a fancy audio recorder setup like the Zoom H5. If all you want to do is record audio with an external RØDE Microphone, this camera will let you do that just like any other good DSLR will. :)

      @@adetayoadegoke I would get the 6D. The 5DMkIII cost more than double, it's in a completely different league, while you won't notice that much of a difference in image quality, if you notice at all. However, in order to overcome some issues in tighter spaces, I'm looking to acquire a full-frame camera and will definitely stay with Canon. That said, I've watched this video TWICE just to fully understand your thinking and contrast it to my desired to have a camera with 2 memory cards. I haven't yet lost any pictures as a result of a failure, but I'm not looking to stretch my luck. I'm also considering changing/adding different genres to my business and would like that added bit of security without breaking the bank. I'd be happy to consider any insights you might have beyond the info in this video.

    • @karikaru
      @karikaru 5 років тому

      Stelios - I don't know much about aviation photography, but I might check out the Sony line with in-body image stabilization. I'm guessing you'll be shooting really telephoto with a lot of vibration going on - this means you'd probably need fast glass with some advanced image stabilization in it, so you don't get shake when you're at 400mm or whatever you need for your photos. If you go Canon - I don't think it will matter much between these two - you'll just probably want something with the latest IS system and a fast aperture.

      This is the comment I've been looking for. I shoot with a 70d and love it. Coming from an XT1. I just needed to know that the 6d mkii is a ff 70d. Sold.

    I'd choose 5d3 because to me video is important and I can use Magic Lantern with it.
    The video quality straight out of the camera from the 6d2 is nothing compare to the ML on the 5D3

      I'd add 4 checkpoints to the 5D Mark III just because of ML. I loved it when I had my T5 and was deceived when I learned it wasn't available on newer cameras.

    Jared - Loving the videos but the recent ones have TONS of side-to-side eye movement and its very distracting as a viewer. May want to reconsider or refine the teleprompter set-up to reduce/ eliminate the rapid eye movement.

    Nice comparison but if I an shooting my kid playing tennis would 1/4000 better or 1/8000?
    Also like to do slow motion can 6d m2 give me more frames for slow motion?

    you summed it up right at the end of this review....That the 2 cameras are not to be compared for the various reasons you mentioned.
    And the 6d mark ii is ideally for those of us who are just entering the world of full frame cameras.
    It is easier than any 5d to get used to. It was not made for the serious professional, however you can use it as such if you know how to get the best out of the 6d mark ii.
    I would not suggest that anyone who is NOT a pro go and invest in any 5d until they have mastered the art of shooting and have been using a crop sensor camera like the 70d or 80d.
    Finally, the pros versus the cons of the 6d ii versus the 5d are clearly s matter of if one wants them to be.
    Unless of course you are a pro...

    Can't forget Magic Lantern on the 5D Mark III for video... also, having the joystick/better handling PLUS dual card slots is a big deal for me with the 5D...

    I have a 5DmkIII, an 80D, and an even older 7D. I wouldn't invest in the 6D all things considered. Canon still needs to get it together though. I mean like wow me in the next two years. The D850 was a real flag in the ground for Nikon all over again. The 5DmkIV was close but they need to give up 4K on their DSLRs already. A person that gets a cinema camera is always going to get a cinema camera. If I was just shooting video I'd consider a C200 because C200.

    I own a 6Dmkii and I will say that this is a versatile and practical camera. I used to own a 5DmkIV. Love the flip screen and lighter weight of the 6Dmkii. I shoot video and don't find the lower bit rate an issue for youtube videos.

      AyeEye Creation need your help..... I'm planning to buy the 6d mark 2, would you please tell me that it's really bad at low light photography?? Focusing is really a big problem? What about the dynamic range?

    • @ymgaki7715
      @ymgaki7715 6 років тому +6

      Hello. I came from a 5DmkIV, D750 and 6D background and I honestly do not feel that this camera lacks in low light focus. Yes there may be tests that it has inferior dynamic range at ISO 100 - 200 when comparing to the MKIV or Nikon cameras but that is really if you are to pixel peep and compare the images side to side. In practical usage, I find that the advantages I get from 6DmkIV is far more important then the slightly lower dynamic range at lower ISO. I use this camera for both photography and video and let me tell you that the video that comes out of this camera is amazing. I came from a SONY 6500 background as well so I am very aware of the difference between 4K and HD quality. But there is more to just clarity when it comes to good video. For professional work, I would suggest the MKIV due to the dual card and the 1/8000 shutter and faster flash sync speed. But for everything else, my honest opinion is that if you love flip screen, the lighter body, and don't mind having only one card slot, then this is a camera of great value. If you are into landscape photography and dynamic range is absolutely crucial for you then you might as well go for Nikon or Sony. Hope that helps :)

      Here's a high ISO test I shot with my 6D Mark II. I shot this time lapse at ISO 10,000 and I bet you cannot tell it was shot that high. I have plenty of images as well because I generally shoot astrophotography.

      I'm a bit unsure about using a DSLR for timelapses. Not referring to quality, but to how quickly you can kill the shutter with timelapses. If you go by the 300k mean cycle count for a DSLR, you get ~166 minutes of 30fps video. Or, considering that the average timelapse is around 30 seconds, 333 videos. Sure, I expect Canons to last a lot longer than the average DSLR, but this is one aspect where a Sony would be better.

    Hi Jared! When you talk about memory cards it seems like having dual cards with redundancy isn't a big deal to you. Is it true? Because actually for me the fact that the 6d mark ii hasn't dual memory cards is a deal breaker, and I wanted to hear your thoughts about this =)

      I was hoping Canon would go with dual SD's on the 6D2 (like Nikon do with the d610 & d750) so I could swap my 5D3s for one .... single card slot= no dice

  • @DeletedDelusion

    Are we polishing a türd here?
    $2000 is a lot of money for a many of people, they will only spend that kind of money if the camera will fullfill all their needs and is not filled with old tech and curtailed on all corners just to make the flagship camera stand out a bit more just because Canon decided to hold back there as well. I hope Nikon will bring out a good replacement for their D750 soon to put pressure on Canon to step up their game as well.
    If you are not a pro you are probably better off buying a good APS-C body like the 80D than getting a mediocre full-frame body, if you are a pro you probably will go with a 5D series because of the better reliability and durability of these cameras.

    People missed the point of the 6d mk2. Sure it was never going to be as complete as the 5d mkiv but it was meant to fill the gap between the 5d mk iii and the mk iv for people who want an accessible full frame camera.

    I found that there was no need for a joystick on my 80D as that touchscreen can be used to change focus points with my left hand thumb without moving my eye from the viewfinder. I expect this can be done with the 6DmkII.
    Actually works quicker than my 2nd hand 5DSR, that I bought instead of the 6DmkII. Those bunched up focus points swayed me away from buying the later.
    Keeping the 80D though!!
