Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. A sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it was released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on April 28, 2023. The game received generally favorable reviews.

Review scores and review text are wholly distinct things: So, PC Gamer can trash the game in its written review all day long, but as long as it feeds an "8" or better into the review aggregators, the publishers won't bristle at it and revoke access.

i find it pretty odd that hes able to push over 60FPS when im pretty sure digital foundry couldnt go above 60fps on a 4090 system. Something seems weird there. Not sure what overlay hes using but how can a channel dedicated to performance and benchmarking not reach over 60fps on a similar rig with resolution dropped and all settings bottomed out.
I just wanna say thank you for testing it on an more average/mid tier hardware. It just gives a more authentic feel as well because it applies to more people. Great video as usual
Yeah, as much as I like Digital foundry, it gets annoying they only ever seem to test things on 4090’s at 4k.

The cards can't play next gen games. Nevermind the wasted $70. It's the wasted $1200 on a subpar GPU. The price of current GPUs may come down but they still can't game.

You should have frametimes in the left corner as well, it’s a good way to visualize stutters. Even if the framerate says 100 it can often feel a lot lower or worse due to frametimes spikes that happen when frames aren’t delivered “on time”
For me, one of the worst parts about a game launching broken like this is that it almost never gets coverage when it's finally fixed. For example, to this day, 2.5 years after its launch, I STILL see people on reddit asking if Cyberpunk 2077 is good yet. I really wish some outlets would cover big patches of broken games and announce when it's properly playable.
Now for Jedi Survivor I'm going to have to look in steam forums and subreddits every week or two until I see people saying it's been fixed on PC because I don't want to have a buggy laggy stuttering experience as my first playthrough. Respawn can have my money as soon as they actually finish the game.

To avoid loading screens, games load assets during cutscenes. Sometimes, the graphics are pushed to a higher standard during cutscenes too. But since the GPU was not used, i bet for the loading of assets, making the CPU overwhelmed and the FPS tanking.

Stuff like this is one of the reasons why I didn't care when games raised their price to 70 bucks. They always launch broken. By the time the game is fixed and playable you can get it anywhere from 20 to 70 percent off on PC.
Yeah, unless you're getting a game for multi-player there's no point in getting a game at launch. Wait at least a couple months for the patches to come out and so you don't have to pay to he a beta tester.

3070 is still pretty high end.
Theres a stutter when entering some new areas and one at the very beginning of cut scenes. There is also a really bad memory leak, which may have been patched today, but I doubt it. Restarting the game helps get it back to "normal" - also switching settings mid game apparently gums up the gears so in my experience I restart after that too.

It's ashamed that these companies are actually getting away with releasing clearly very unpolished games, mainly because not enough people care to stop buying from them or refund the game.
Just finished the game and it sucks how badly it runs but the game itself is a 10/10. It was so good at all points and it does get better performance in the last part of the game but the beginning is abysmal.

@@ize8905 there is a HUGE gap between inherently bad and a 10/10.. a good to great or even fantastic story but it doesnt run well is not a 10/10... a 10/10 should be reserved for games that make you see games in a new light and makes the competiors follow their lead .. Super mario Bros 3 is a 10/10 Red dead redemption (the original) is a 10/10, Breath of the wild is a 10/10 (it struggles in some areas but only in places where you dont spend a lot of time, and the revolutionary gameplay made up for it) .. I havent gotten around to play Jedi survivor yet but even if it has the best story and gameplay of all time in its current state it cant be rated higher than a 6/10

The low fps in cut scenes is due to it rendering more rays from raytracing and the texture resolution is way higher giving it the insanely good look
movies you see in the theatres are always on 29 FPS. so watching cinematics on 29fps is not that big of a deal maybe. They probably want us to have that cinematic experience

Models for cutscenes are higher poly and probably higher res textures, but my bets are on a higher poly LOD, specially if talking about Unreal.

You go to an electronics store to buy a new vacuum cleaner. You buy it expecting it to work as intended. You get home, plug it into a wall outlet, hit the power button only to realize it "somewhat" works. You can use it to vacuum your house, but the sucking power is pretty weak. You might be able to use it as intended in say 6 months time after the producer releases a firmware update which you can install through a phone app. --- Gaming industry today
I enabled rebar last night and it made a significant difference for me, but I need to do more testing.
Played for about 30 minutes, huge boss fight, 60 frames locked the whole time.
I need to test on Koboh in the town. That's where I've had the most performance issues.
Curious if other players have tested with it on vs off.
Reviewers should hold back their scores saying "we'll give it a score once it's optimised". This could end the trend of releasing games in a state like this.

I play on quality mode on PS5 and so far, I've been pretty lucky. I get the occasional frame dip running around the open world, but for only a split second at times. (nothing game breaking.) I did crash once, but I save regularly, so it doesn't bother me. Other than that, the game has been running great. I feel bad for people having issues.
Best and most trustworthy game reviewer out there. I've got it on the PS5 and im not super sensitive to the frame drops or other performance issues, but i do notice some of them. It seems to be running better now than how it was during your launch review but as a game its very fun. Sad the performance isn't as good as the gameplay/story.

I've played about 6 hours on Ps5 performance mode and it' been running at 45-50 fps for 95% of that

From an executive standpoint, their job is to cut costs and create record profits. When the hype/marketing of a game contributes more to success than the game itself, why does it NEED to come out polished? Even though it damages their reputation over time, EA and other AAA studios have a big enough share of the market to where it really doesn’t matter in the short-mid term
They could’ve released a much, much worse game for let’s say 50% of the budget of Jedi Survivor, but marketed it the same and have made nearly just as much money. They own the IPs, they don’t have any reason to give a crap.

Its so true about the lack of consequence. If they released a new car that has serious issues and doesnt work, the consequences of that is people dying and then they need to recall the car. Much appreciated using a system with more common specs, the recommended specs asks for an 8GB RTX 2070, I'd hate to see how that runs. I'll wait for the Denuvo free version, that usually adds a few extra frames.
The steam acheivents are actually broken (shocking I am sure). Mine on the top show .2 for everything but in the april 29th summery a little below that they all have much higher completion rates. The second planet boss has a 47.1% completion rate.

Seems like ppl are seeing a 20-30 fps bump with today’s patch, as well as less sudden dropping to lower fps.
we need a new system where the game developers gain control over when the game should be said to be ready because the ones making the decisions now of days need to be fired for forcing uncooked and raw materiel to the consumer.
On the main menu, what does the item below "Start new Journey", titled "Jedi: Fallen Order Story" do? Does it load your last game's save and changes the game based off choices you made in the previous game? Just a recap of the story from that game?

To play jedi survivor, you need to learn how to use the Force. If you can see what would happen, frame drop would not matter.
Wholeheartedly agree with your take on the 3070. It is the exact same performance I had, although you can cope with the struggle and it gets to 50 fps around the second planet, the game looks disgusting with AMD FSR enabled.
Rather wait until they patch up things enough so I don't have to use it otherwise major L for this game

@@thewanderinggrasshopper4792 1440p* That would also mean ~3080/6800xt can do 4k 60fps at ultra. Rt? Its fine if it needs upscaling, settings reduction, more grunt or a combination of these things. These should be the targets wtih new games reaching around that performance or better.
I was playing the previous star wars game and my 6800xt was reaching just shy of 144fps on native 1440p max settings. Looking at this games visuals there really is no excuse for a 4090 to be struggling with rt disabled.

Also wanna state for all those who gave up in the start, Performance improves Alot once you get to Koboh. I mean with a 7900xt/3900x/32gb/m.2 in the City I could only get 45-55ish fps no matter what settings 5k epic all the way to 720p low... But once I got to koboh Im getting 70-90fps at 4096x2160 Epic settings(besides effects on high) with FSR Quality mode

The frame rate drops in cutscenes is probably because the cutscenes were rendered at 30 FPS instead of the game which aims for 60 FPS
Honestly, it's also because there's a large portion of game journalists who play such a small amount of the game before reviewing it. I remember reading an article back around 2019 that the average time was around 5 hours for most reviewers. Which honestly isn't a large enough time period for certain games. COD games, sure, you can probably get a handle on what the game is with that time frame. Sports games are another. But when you're looking at a game with extended run time, I've noticed a lot of developers pushing all the quality into the first couple of hours but then it's bare bones in the mid to late game.
Either way, we're just seeing the influence of non gaming suits who came to this field because they saw the dollar signs, not because they had a passion for the hobby.
And Cyberpunk ran really well for me at launch, but I literally upgraded my rig solely for that game so I was on a higher tier hardware and that's not an option for everyone.
Honestly i am 100% certain the developers under EA cannot release a game in a polished state. It sucks because you know they already knew about these issues because they are literally coming out with fixes today for pc. And fixes tomorrow for Xbox and PlayStation. So that means they would have had to identify the problems in 3 days and fixed them which is definitely not possible. This really makes me believe they had been working on this before the game even launched.
What's crazy to me is that, back in 2019 I played Metro Exodus with my RTX 2080 , which is still to this day one of the prettiest games and in no way inferior graphically to games like The Last Of Us Remake and Jedi Survivor. I played Metro in native 4k with all the details cranked up to the max and I had around 90-100 frames throughout the whole game. Yet TLOU remake and this game played barely at 30 fps and still had moments when the game would completely freeze, and get this, it wasn't in 4k or in 2k, it barely worked in FULL HD!
To me that's crazy, to need a 4090 in order to play the latest games is just stupid and ridiculous. If we look at raw speed 4090 is around triple the speed of 2080, yet the difference is incomparable. I cranked up Jedi Survivor to 4k just to see the difference, and I had no joke 3 FRAMES PER SECOND. So even though 4090 is maybe 3 times faster than 2080, it puts out 20 to 25 times more fps. I think that is because nVidia doesn't give the older cards the software support they need, so we'll be forced to buy the newest cards that you need to sell your kidney in order to afford...
Maybe you guys think differently, but if I go today and buy the strongest GPU currently for sale, and it runs my games beautifully in 4k resolution. And only about 3 years later that same card barely runs games at 1080p, that's unacceptable. Especially considering the fact that the games don't look better graphically then say games from 2018. You cannot deny that there is something fishy going on.
And btw, I cannot acceppt an excuse that EA that has been making games since 1981 and has billions of dollars cannot make a game that runs on different configs. Same goes for SONY, they make more money in one year than my country's entire GDP and they say that despite their money and experience as well as the experience of Naughty Dog, who've also have been making games for decades, cannot make a game that works on hardware that ISN'T 4080 or 4090. Especialy when they've released God of War, Horizon and Days Gone on PC who all worked great.
PS: If it really was a mistake, they would've fixed it by now, but after months they still haven't. One of my theories besides nVidia wanting you to buy 4090, is that this is good press honestly. Look how longs have both of these games I talked about stayed in the press. Everyone talks about how broken a game is and every single patch is awaited and hyped up. Look at Cyberpunk for example, it released 2 and half years ago and every article still generated buzz...
There should be a technical board of review for video games that verifies it's stability and if it's broken they shouldn't be allowed to release the game. Highly highly impractical I know but wish it was a real thin.
Cross platforms have something to do with all the wild failures also. The PS5 exclusives have been really good at launch, but it was set hardware.

I have a 2070, 16gb ram, i5-9600 and run this game off an hdd. My only sole issue with this game is the stuttering. It just ruins it all for me. Especially when you engage an enemy and the game drops to 10fps then picks back up to 60. Was able to play Dead Island 2 recently with 0 performance issues.
I think you cpu is bottlenecking your gpu
@destra yo well my gpu is around 90% and my cpu is around 40% when playing. I believe it's the other way around.
This release and stuff like Cyberpunk. Really show the shady side of Reviewer's and UA-cam content Creator's. Notice how many people got early access to Jedi Survivor, Vs the number of them that actually mentioned Performance? Pretty much every UA-camr had a "100% completion" Review on Launch. The game has definitely issues, but you seem to have little idea what you are talking about. Some examples:
50% RAM usage on a RTX 4090 fat 21:9 1440p equates to about 12 GBs of RAM, which is a lot. It goes then up to 85%, which equates to an insane 20.4 GB. This is CRAZY.
Some games up the graphics during cutscenes (or the nature of the cutscene demands more graphic) - in this case they seem to be loading stuff as well. Since cut scenes are like videos you watch, 30 fps is usually fine - it would be not during gameplay. 70 fps during gameplay for such a game (not high motion, but like medium-low motion) is decent-good and no issue, otherwise turn down graphics (its called EPIC for a reason).
The difference between DLSS 2 and FSR 2 is not big in terms of quality and performance (based on a recent picture analysis I saw XeSS vs DLSS 2 vs AMD FSR 2). Contrary to your statement of it being really bad.
The stuttering is really bad though and I rather have games compile shaders before main menu (like The Last of Us did). Really bad Quality Control by devs.
People would complain if their sports events had low frame rate. The standard for film should the standard for gaming.
I hate that everyone's having so many issues with the game. I'm running an i7-13700K, 3060 12GB, 32GB RAM running the game off of an Western Digital Black M.2 drive. Frame rates can get sluggish at times, especially in the open world with a lot of assets and stuff, but I've had a single crash the entire game and that was during the initial shader compilation. Other than that, I've played through a good portion of the game without any major issues other than the frame rate. It's not as high as I'd like, but it's been more than playable and I've never lost a combat incident due to frame rate issues.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part I caused system crashes so bad for me that it corrupted my OS and caused me to have to reinstall Windows, with every patch making the performance vastly worse. Hope that the game gets patched soon so that everyone can enjoy it, because I've been having a lot of fun with it
I got an EA subscription to play it on my PC. It’s a bit above minimum system requirements and the first game ran completely smoothly. It was so laggy it was unplayable and I spent 14€ for nothing. I now finally but the bullet and got a PS5. With the patch it works fine.

My performance has been overall okay-ish. I did experience several fps drops and stutters but not enough to ruin my enjoyment. However, since Jeddah, I have had many random crashes. I found that disabling ray tracing helps. The fact that my 4080 and 13th gen Intel processor is struggling to maintain at least 60fps at 1080p is inexcusable.
It blows my fucking mind that a game released in 2023 has limited to no ray tracing options, FG and DLSS tech from day 1.

The reason it drops to 30 frames in some cut scenes is because it's capped. It's supposed to do that. Destiny does that too. That's working as intended
The recent performance patch improves framerate quite a bit on PC, Still needs work but hardware unboxed's new before & after patch comparison shows some real gains and much less stuttering since the CPU utilization bug was fixed.
I would go so far as to say if it ships broken and you have to wait for them to fix it before buying, wait until it's on sale. Don't give them a full-price sale for a half-ass game.

That 0.2% achievement thing is another bug. If you actually click that and go into the global achievements, then you can see what the actual percentage is, and it's much higher than 0.2% while not being as high as it should be imo
I bought the game on PC, in the beginning I did not really notice the drops. But later it become more frequent and I was losing fights because of it.
But I really love this game, the story is good, the gameplay is fun, and they add good new things for a sequel.
My main reason why I won't return it, is because it is a Story-based game.
I know for a fact that if I wait for another month or 2, the story will leak everywhere, and the game will be spoiled to me, either by online trolls or by accident, and as someone
that is a big time Star Wars fan, I don't want that to happen, I want to experience the story at my own pace.
I think EA might also know now this, there are going to be people like me that won't return it for this reason.

@@michaelklock422 Yes, but you will have to actively look for it, I mean leaked as some people did for Hogwarts Legacy, spoil the ending in comments of UA-cam videos that are about the Potter-Verse and have no relation to the game.

According to SomeOrdinaryGamer, you have a two PC limit before the game locks you out of playing it on any other device. Not that it matters but just to mention it. Especially for Steam Deck enthusiasts.
Had during gameplay strange things happen. Suddenly when i killed an enemy, we were both transported in the air, and then drop slowly back to the ground
I'm running this game from launch day and never had huge FPS drops running on a 5900x with RTX3080.
I don't have a monster PC, and while I will definetly agree that the performence at launch is unacceptable, it's still was much better than what I've seen people experience on the PS5.
I feel like this might not be a PC port problem like with TLOUS or Arkham Knight, but rather more of a Cyberpunk case, where the game is just broken everywhere...

This was a great review and i really liked that you tested on muliple hardware, please dont think anything else, but, saying that most people play on a 3070 is kind of a wild viewpoint to me. It sounds a bit like something someone disconnected from the world would say. Most of my friends haven't even got a 3000 series card, one of them still plays on a 980.
Anyway, great review but i can definitely see a disconnect from your economic situation and the one most people experience.
I'm just going to do what I did with the first Jedi Fallen Order game which was just using EAs pass system, like $15 bucks, just to make sure I don't waste $60+ on a game.
I'm playing on the series x, and I noticed that the cutscenes just seemed off. I hope the performance is patched up and smoothed out soon. I'd hate for this game to do bad because of it when it is a fun and beautiful game
I remember when insurgency sandstorm was first out it did a similar thing, the framerate seemed to get lower the longer you played.
i played through the game twice on an i5 and 1660 super and stayed within 60-80 at 1080p and mid low settings. im not using amd fsr but i am using the gpu scaling nvidia stuff in gforce experience at 80%. 100% the game and had a great time.

This entire video is gold, especially the end. I'm thoroughly enjoying the ps5 version, despite it running at a nearly constant 12fps in performance mode. It's frustrating but damnit i loved the first one and I'm determined to love this one too
In my experience the performance mode has a crap ton of artifacting honestly think quality is the way to go for this one weirdly enough

In case y'all are wondering it's a stuttering mess on an Rtx 4080, frames drop to below 30 on the second area. And rarely hit a consist 55 frames. I've crashed 6 times and 2 of those times was during important cutscenes in the 3rd planet. I'm just gonna wait for fixes at this point.
Getting from 35-110 fps on pc. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it sucks. Definitely not acceptable levels of performance. But I have to say, it’s completely playable.
Thankfully having smoother experience on PS5 version - note, obviously sympathetic to everyone having issues elsewhere for that's your time & $ on this. As long said, one of easist solutions I've said is for people to stop preordering.
Its been over 7 months and I still cant get past the second mission. I just arrived on the second planet and it crashes every time I try to play. Also lag spikes from 70-20 fps when it really should run at 144+ on my RTX 3080 and I9-9900k 32GB Ram. This game is a joke
The new first patch doubles my performance, at least respawn is getting back up on their feet.
It should've released on a better state, who knows what happened behind the scenes before launch.
dude the games fine people just dont have good computers its literally all it is for the most part they dont even have dlss yet ill be getting 100 plus fps when they do
@@andrewog3516digital foundry literally did a deepdive on the performance issues, the game doesn’t utilize even the best of CPUs, leading to a CPU bottleneck by underutilized threads and as such low GPU usage.
This game doesn’t have more impressive graphics than something like RDR2 or Cyberpunk. It runs on Unreal Engine 4 and should be very smooth for any modern machine.
I’m getting shit fps with a 3070 and 5800x3d even on the lowest settings at native resolution. The game is just unoptimized. The dickriding is crazyyy.

God of War Ragnaröck sold 11 million copies in 3 months - only on playstation.
Cyberpunk sold 13 million in total across all platforms.
The hype for cyberpunk 2077 was huge so i think when it comes to sales numbers cyberpunk didn’t do well.
The main takeaway so far appears to be that because consoles really don't have the apparent horsepower to run 4k games appropriately, PC ports also suffer. You have to recall that Cyberpunk ran fine on PC at launch. I know because I installed in on day 1 and it ran with Ultra settings in HD on a 1070 installed on a WD Black mechanical drive. None of the model and texture loading issues that apparently plagued consoles was present. Console players really got a horrible deal, I'll give you that. In light of how poorly it ran on consoles, it comes as no surprise that 56.67% of the 18 million total units sold went to PC players.

The PC gamer reviewers used a 2080 (listed on the same page you showed), which means it's closer to your laptop than the 4090. They also state that they 'struggle' to stay at 35 in the open world. How they gave it an 8/10 is completely beyond me.
While it might not be related - leaving vsync being on won't do you any favors with the stuttering, especially when the frame rate is all over the place
Once it gets cracked and doesn't have the ineffectual shell of ineffective DRM around it, it will probably run much better. And be about 30 gigs lighter on the download. Not much since it's nearly 200 with the patches but, you know, little victories for the people with more technical know-how than actual money.
The regulations and standards of the game releases are so vague that these companies are basically taking advantage of it. If this was any other industry, you'd be forced to give refunds left and right.
just some feedback, I found the top/bottom borders to be super distracting and would have preferred black. maybe just me, but it made it hard to watch for me. thanks for making it tho!
