  • In this video, I react for the first time to Queen performing ‘Somebody To Love’ live in Montreal. In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Freddie Mercury’s vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Queen are one of the biggest bands of all time and they have a special place in my heart!

My cousin saw Queen in 82 and sat 2 rows from the front. At the end of the concert Freedie brought out a bouquet of roses, pulled out one at a time, kissed the rose then tossed it into the audience. She caught one, preserved it and still has it today.

I'm a metalhead normally, but there is simply no denying that Queen is the greatest band of all time, and Freddie is the greatest singer/frontman. There is not even a slight competition in the frontman part. There are loads of fantastic bands, but Queen is just the complete package of perfection, and unbeatable live.

      Couldn't have said it better.
Freddie Mercury was born to be the ultimate rockstar. A combination of talent, training and sheer musical genious that cannot be replicated.
Also, the fact that the rest of the band, Roger, Brian and John are also legendary tier with their instruments AND singing is amazing. These exceptional people happened to find each other and combine their talent to give mankind a gift.
In 100 years and beyond people will still listen to Queen.

Thank you for recognizing Roger and John. When you have a talent and personality as larger than Life as Freddie's, it takes some effort to really appreciate the still amazing talents of the rest of the band. Sir Brian, of course, receives plenty of deserved attention, but I've always felt Roger and John don't get near enough respect. They are a super group, through and through.

Freddie was having throat problems and his doctor told him not to sing or risk damaging his vocal cords. Being Freddie Mercury he went out and gave one of his best most powerful performances ever. There will never be another like him. The closest i have ever heard to Freddie is Marc Martel. Roger Taylor said the first time he heard Marc sing he cried because Marc sounded so like Freddie. Cheers

I've watched many other vocal coaches reacting to & analysing vocal performances on UA-cam, but no one I've seen so far is capable of doing such detailed and complete analyses like you do. With your powers of observation you're able to bring up and focus on small details and nuances most people would simply overlook. Your wit, musical sensibility, humour and enthusiasm make for a treat of a package. And no matter how much you may geek over some aspect of a performance, you never do so in a superficial, annoying or boring way. You're a joy to watch and listen. Keep up the amazing work! A note to watch when you review this... the second time Freddie moves to the audience and Roger is playing the drums hard, watch as Freddie sees Brian walking to the back to tend to his guitar. It is so seamless, most miss it. Freddie works the audience until he looks back again to see Brian coming back to the front of the stage and then moves forward with the song. All, without any fuss, do their parts. John rocks the bass during that time and Roger keeps them going and shifts when Brian steps back up to the mic. It is this peek into their professionalism that moves me to tears. Regarding Roger Taylor doing solo projects, he did! His latest Live album is gorgeous: _The Outsider Tour Live_ - do check it out! And yes, I saw Queen live in 1978... the Jazz Tour. It was incredible. I am sure the stadium (that doesn't exist anymore) is still resonating with a _stomp stomp clap_ that started 30 minutes before the show even began.

Roger Taylor could easily be the lead singer in any band, but with Queen the embarrassment of riches is such that he doesn't need to be, he can drum and do backing vocals. Although now in this 21st century there is so much mystique surrounding Queen, and particularly Freddie's legendary status...We who were privileged to see Queen perform live, knew instinctively that we were witnessing inimitable greatness. I was so very fortunate to attend several of their concerts in different parts of the world in the mid 80's...This band were the perfect storm, and Freddie was the God with pockets full of fairy dust, who ensured each and every ticket holder experienced the absolute time of their lives. NO ONE can sing like Freddie.
    Freddie's voice is unmatched.
Did you know that even scientific study confirms Freddie Mercury had an unparalleled singing voice. That what makes his voice so special was extremely fast vibrato 7.04 Hz and subharmonics. He was able to create several more layers of harmonics than anyone else. Freddie was using a subharmonics by vibrating his ventricular folds, a technique usually found only in Tuvan throat singers. One of the conclusions from the studies was that "Mercury was vibrating something in his throat that even Pavarotti couldn't move and that kind of creates a very typical vocal fingerprint"

While Live Aid was their best set ever, I think this is their best performance of just one song. When you talked about connecting with the audience that was Freddy's best talent, he was a showman. Roger is great in this, Brian is always great, John is steady and gives them the bass lines they need, but the starting point is always Freddy and his talent and presence. Great reaction, everyone should hear this version of the song at least once in their life, this is about a perfect as you can get.

I was at Live Aid and don't think that in musical terms it was their best. However, what Freddie & Co did was to somehow turn a huge general audience into THEIR audience in twenty minutes with a direct and totally charismatic performance. Their professionalism is unsurpassed.

If Roger hadn't been the drummer for Queen, I don't know where this whole project would have ended up. Freddy drove Roger to be his best. He became the best with his voice while being a bloody great drummer added into the mix! Thanks Roger. You're a bloody legend!

I saw Queen in 1976 at Cardiff Castle, it poured down all day but they were magnificent, I was 13 and went on my own. I also saw them in Milton Keynes bowl in 1982, a much bigger venue but still magnificent. I've seen them post Freddie with Adam Lambert and they were very good but it wasn't the same.

I was fortunate to see Queen in concert during this tour at the Baltimore Civic Center in August of 1980. I was 18 years old at the time, and I still vividly remember the show. Freddie owned the crowd from the moment he stepped on the stage. It was definitely "one of those shows".

A true artist doesn't want to perform, they have to. The beauty within demands a release. Modern pop music seems to have forgotten that this divine inspiration is the heart of true art. Not money or fame. I miss the music of my youth. When the radio was filled with artists like Queen who knew better.

A long time ago. In a gala... No wait minute.
    Just a long time ago.
As an early teenager, our class went to London. We did it the real Scandinavian way and sailed, clearly.
I still have a towel from the ship, I think.
And apart from being escorted away by armed police at one point because of a massive angry protest against the Iraq war I think it was.
We also went to see a musical of Queen, We Will Rock You. Was the first time I really saw such a thing.
    And it was pretty amazing.
Clearly I am to young. ( Imagine I can still say those words ) to have seen them live.
But seeing this show, is something that still feels important to me.
Also, about Roger. I remember seeing different things from him. And as a drummer myself ( Well compared to legends like him, I guess it should be called aspiring drummer )
I remember back when I was young and played in bands, trying to play and sing at the same time, partly because of Roger. And it's really not easy.
You are doing multiple different rhythms at once, with both hands and both feet. So the singing part is completely different from that, you need to be able to cut the two things of completely.
Like using a different computer, because if you use the same it blurs together.
I really have extreme respect for drummers who play and sing.
It can be a reason I fall for bands. The first sort of unknown band I got in fan mode over was because of a drummer playing and singing called Haste the Day.
Music is emotions, it's a journey of memories.
Music can take different people on different journeys, because it depends on the emotions and memories of that person.
And that is why music is so powerful. It's a connection to things you forgot, or lost. Or a hope to something you wish you had.
The right music can touch things you know are there, right inside you. But often just out of reach.
    I need music every day.
And that is why I really enjoy your reactions, because it's easy to see what music means for you to.
    Thanks for another reaction.

So, while I was too young to go see Queen in 1981 at the forum, this year I got about as close as possible.
There is an IMAX movie of the entire concert from 1981 playing at IMAX theatres around Canada and the US. The Montreal Forum was closed down in 1996 and has since been repurposed as an entertainment complex. Part of this is having an IMAX theatre basically where center ice was located. I went and watched this movie at that very theatre with my son. So basically Freddy was being projected exactly where he was standing in 1981. Even through the video screen so manybyears after his death he was still able to control the audience and the whole theatre was singing along with him. It was truly magical.

How good he is at feeding the audience really shows when you watch the Live Aid performance. It was a hot day with a lot of performers, and Queen was on the downslide as a "has-been" group at the time, but as soon as they took the stage he took control and within minutes they were quite literally eating from the palm of his hand. Created the most memorable performance of the entire concert, and made everyone remember just how good Queen was.

I have to say that I think the people who seem to be discovering Queen now (meaning the virtual multitude of UA-cam reactors) focus on Freddie. This may be partly due to the movie.
However, old people like me who grew up with Queen have always seen them as a band. They were each amazingly talented musicians and songwriters, but together, they equaled greatest.

Reporter: What instrument do you play? Freddy: "The audience darling, the audience." All 4 have degrees & All 4 have written #1 songs. Freddy: "Most bands rehearse until they can, get it right. We rehearse until we can't, get it wrong." Brian May built his guitar at age 16, his friend John Deacon wired it, before getting his degree in electronics.

Had the good fortune to see these music gods at Wembley in 1986 as a raw 17 year old (do the math 😂).You ask about the experience, the great thing is ,the concert was recorded for vhs, then available on dvd and now youtube, yes I did search for me and found me in the audience, so alot of my memories were captured on film. The emotion of the day was electric, Status Quo played as did INXS and The Alarm but when Queen entered on stage my word if the stadium had a roof it would have been blown off such was the roar. I do remember when the crowd started clapping for We Will Rock You towards the end of the concert I couldn't lift my arms anymore I was that knackered because of the emotion and exhilaration of seeing my idols live. Great reaction Lolly check out their early stuff it's all about fairies and mystical and magical tales I think you will enjoy them.
