I love PPU ammo in general. This is pretty impressive. I think this would be the best for deer hunting. And in an SKS with a 20" barrel, you'd probably get 2450-2500 fps at the muzzle and of course the deer would be farther away = 50 to 100 yards or so... another great review! Thanks!
Need to see how these do in my SKS. I've got a Romanian with a pristine chrome-lined barrel. Hand cycling it seems to feed just fine. My 7.62x39 AR can eat 3-5 of them from what I can tell, but any more in the magazine stack causes a malfunction.
Reminds me of the old Hansen rounds I bought over 20 years ago when they were made in Yugoslavia. I used them in my SKS for deer hunting and they were devastating on all the deer I shot. They work much better than the spire point round that I had to buy after running out of the Hansen's. I will order some right now if I can find them in stock somewhere.

I bought a case(200rds) of these based on your results in the video. They should perform well in my Ruger American Ranch with 16" barrel. Thanks for your time and expense to put together this fine video, great job! Semper fi!
TBH, I've never heard of PPU. Well I have now and I checked Midway USA and by golly they have this exact round. And at a really good price for hunting ammo at only $15.49 a box ! And from the reviews it did excellent on deer. Even my fellow Mini-30 lovers said it fed well for them. Every year during deer season I like to try different rounds in different calibers. Thanks to you T&T I'm definitely going to try these this season. Even the FPS was pretty dag-gum good. This is THE go to channel for testing folks. Thanks again bubba.
Good testing Tools, I haven’t used this SP-RN version shown in the video, but I have had whitetail hunting success using PPU’s pointed soft point version of the 7.62x39. I even caught the bullet and it mushroomed very well as well. In my opinion, PPU “rifle line” soft points in any caliber can easily be used in the woods for whitetail as long as leaded ammo is legal in your area. I’ve also used PPU soft points on whitetails in 7mm rem mag and 8mm mauser with no issues regarding lethality. For the price, comparatively to Federal/remington/winchester soft points, I think anyone will be well served with PPU For whitetail hunting purposes. I know some guys dont like the idea of using foreign made ammo, but they legitimately perform on par with the American made brands while being nearly half the price.
I personally prefer to see penetration between 12-18 inches and believe that fragmentation which sends pieces of lead well outside the main wound channel aid in damage by creating their own additional wound paths. However, this might make a decent hunting round since it goes a little deeper and will avoid leaving a bunch of lead fragments in the meat.
It would be interesting to see an accuracy test of these at 50 and 100 yards. And if they give adequate accuracy, a gel test from those same ranges would also be interesting.
Excellent demonstration, Sir. To me, that's a good argument for the higher velocity from that caliber over the .300 Blackout. But I don't know a lot about those, so I'll just be impressed with what you showed us. Thank you, Mr. Tools!
That's a really impressive round. I agree with you on the fact that those are some of the best results I've ever seen in that caliber. I absolutely love your testing videos. Some of, if not the best, on UA-cam. Keep up the hard work brother. Awesome video as always. 👏
Great info, thanks for sharing. You should have run it through an SKS as well, to test the velocity with the longer barrel length. Also, you should shoot groups at various distances to show the accuracy

The round from the 10" rifle looked like it dumped a ton of energy into that gel. The 16" had the speed for a great wound channel. Both looked really good.

Years ago I bought some winchester 125 grain sp brass case 7.62&39 ammo, it did pretty good target shooting and the slugs expanded pretty good into telephone books duct taped together out of a chinese SKS with a 20" barrel and an ATI pistol grip stock.
PPU has good ammo and great brass for reloading. I use these and the pointed soft points to mess around at the range, then load the brass with my own loads and Hornady 123g SST's. Good video sir
This is one of the most reliable 7.62x39 I’ve seen FOR THE $$$$$. AAC 7.62x39 black tip is the cheapest .55 a round but had some weird stuff happen to it… because it was steel, still 95% good. But this PPU brass soft point is the best and it wasn’t weak either, 10.5 inch barrel 2160 average need to test 16 inch barrel bet it’s damn near 2400 which is good. Tools and targets did ballistic gel too….. everyone should get this
Popped back over here after watching and commenting on the Barnaul fragspansion ammo test. This PPU ammo is showing very good if not excellent terminal behavior for a hunting bullet.Edit: The difference is pretty extreme between the PPU and the Barnaul. You might want to test some other higher grade comnercial soft point.
I picked up 38 boxes of this today at 12.95 each. I ordered 50 boxes, but they called and said they had goofed up and only had the 38 available. Fine. My Ruger No. 1 and CZ527 love this stuff. In the swamps and multimillion dollar homes outside Raleigh, I can't really use anything with effective range past 200 yards anyway. It's good ammo for deer and varmints. Prolly holding off bipedal predators as well. Even from a 10" tube.

Good test T&T. That 10" barrel did better than I thought it would. I have a Norinco SKS and a Polytech AKS 762 so this is info I can use. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
I miss my zpap:( great video as always. The rds look great and I randomly see them in local stores. I'm wondering about accuracy? I would love to see a video about accuracy from both tools
this is honestly impressive ammo...weight retention, penetration, and expansion are all great for around 70ish cents a round. You have me really curious on the 154gr stuff. From all the old videos people had great expansion, 14-15 inches penetration, not as good weight retention though.
🇦🇺😎👍Hey big fella the PPU I have have a normal soft point , those ones have a round nose. I’ve noticed other UA-cam videos in the US only have your variety , down here we only have the pointer ones ( ours say on the box PSP 8.0g 123 g). Not too sure if ours are boattail as I’ve never pulled one apart….nasty energy dump…great disruption 🏁….16” is the perfect barrel length for that caliber I believe …I’M IN LOVE ❤🙃…. Years ago people warned me that PPU was shit ammo that’s why it was so cheap but I will say I’ve had fantastic results. Too bad the price of it has gone through the roof….Great video big fella 🏁💪🤠👊🇺🇸
This is decent stuff, I had a few boxes several years ago all since used up. Have never been able to find it again, but I did take a deer with this load one year. I hear some people say these do not feed well in some semi autos but as you showed it fed fine for you and I had no problems. Be a good option for a bolt action. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.
I have never used these round nose loads but i can for sure tell you that the pointed soft point version is excellent. They will flat put some big bucks on the ground and i've figured out i like them actually better then Winchester power points. I was always afraid i might get cycling issues from the round nose being shorter so i've stuck to buying the pointed soft points. Good stuff!
Great video... never seen or knew about this brand. I went to my local gun shop just to look around. And b4 I left, I asked about brass 7.62x39.. most of the times NO ones carry it. But this time this shop had this brand.. at first, I was like.🤔 where is the pointed tip.. but for $15 a box, I was like, ok.. now that I see your review... I kind of like it..😂😂
Just purchased this ammo however, haven't shot any of it yet. My reasoning for the purchase was based on the soft point for self-defense. After watching your video on the gel test I now have the answer I was hoping for! (Nice penetration and expansion) Thanks for the work you do! Love your videos!!!
I definitely got to get me a couple boxes of these!!! I have shot a while lot of things with a whole lot of different kinds of 7.62x39 including reloads with Speer soft points and I believe thos PPU ammo performers better than all of them. Thanks for the test! If it wasn't for your testing, I would have never known.
Great video! I picked up some of these rounds about 4 or 5 years ago for $10.00 per 20 at Cabellas. I have taken a few deer with it out of an SKS an AK. One shot kills all of them. Good ammo for my hunting needs.
We use PPU Rifleline all the time in .303 FMJ for Classic Rifle Competition and practice. It's good ammo with very good quality brass, better than Hornady in my opinion as it's clean and not tarnished. They say the brass is good to reload also a number of times if you do that
I had to watch this again. You're right about this round as far as for defense or hunting. Great stuff. Thanks again, Brother Tools. You're definitely doing it right! 👍
Liking the rifle jelly tests! Awesome performance out of both barrel lengths. Definitely a nice hunting, bump in the night round. Thanks for sharing Tools!
Awesome test Tools ! that's by far the best 7.62 x 39 I've seen ! I will be getting some of that ammo asap ! appreciate you doing all the leg work for all of us !
Nice testing with the PPU 7.62x39 Jelly Giggle. Nice ammo for hunting or self defense. The great thing about 7.62 is that it still performs despite barrel length. Thanks for all you do Tools!♠️🎩🎱🇺🇲🏁🎯🇺🇦🔱🏵️🌻💮🌼🌸👊🏴☠️🏹
PPU rifle ammo seems to have really made a name for it self. It's super accurate and consistent in 5.56 NATO, too, not to mention affordable for BTJHP.
Great performance. Beautiful expansion. I was mostly interested in how the round nose bullets would feed through the semi-automatic. Looks like they fed just fine. I've had good results with all of the PPU ammunition I've tried. I figure if the Europeans don't know how to load quality ammunition by now, they're never going to learn.
Aint that the truth! I've seen a couple of people mention they have trouble with it feeding in AR's. I could see that with the sharp and tight feed ramps on an AR.
I wouldn't hesitate to use the PPU SP or SP RN for hunting pigs or deer, I've had good results with both. But if someone is looking for near match-grade consistent results, I found the Federal Power-Shok to be able to do it, much to my initial surprise.
I bought some for hunting, but they don't feed well in my AR. I use them as the first shot and have the pointed soft points for any follow-up shots. Have not tried them on game yet, but they are in the queue. 7.62x39 is sufficient for deer in the place I hunt, as shots are generally only about 100 yds. Will report back on live performance when it occurs.
Just for some perspective, the 10.5" is a decent example of what this round will do at ~100 yards from a 15" rifle. Hard to find a bullet this consistent without paying a fortune.
I have my arsenal sam 7 stoked with these for home defense. I used to use hanson stuff that looked the same as ppu but it had some kind of red primer sealant on the hanson ammo. I like this stuff better than all the spitzer stuff out there, winchester and federal included
If someone is as old as me, they probably remember when the SKS first hit American consumer sales. Typical price was $89.95, but there was often a $10 per gun discount if purchasing 3 or more. The AK's came along at pretty low price tags as well. Thus, these cheaply made rifles sold like hotcakes.Old military ammo, or the equivalent, sold at remarkably low prices as well. This allowed folks to blast holes in beer can on a frequent basis. FAST FORWARD to today, when the cheap ammo is gone, and old SKS rifles are selling at ridiculous prices , it amazes me that anyone still uses the things. Is it the strong forged receiver, the precision sights, or those match grade barrels which draw people to them? Perhaps it's the amazing ballistics of the 7.62X39 cartridge. Maybe that's it - the flat shooting round, known for it devastating effect on game from antelope to elk and black bear that makes it so popular. OKAY, SERIOUSLY, what is the fascination with these riveted stamped steel guns, with crude sides and lousy ballistics that keeps people shooting them? And is a real hunting rifle or target rifle was offered in this caliber, would you actually buy one? (BTW: Many excellent hunting rifles are available today for less than a decent SKS.)
Semi autos can have difficulty feeding these, sometimes the lead will deform on the feed ramp and jam the firearm pretty badly. Didn't see you have any issues, just fyi on why these may not always be ideal.
I used to shoot round nose bullets in 308 Winchester for hunting. Generally round nose bullets penetrate more then psp or pointed soft points. In 7.62x39mm with a light bullet I think that would be a great choice. In 308 Winchester heavy round nose bullets weren't optimal at least from a stopping power perspective. Bullets would expand a little and still punch right through. I've worked my way down to 165 grain Federal fusion pointed soft points. Penetration is still too much (even for elk) and they seem to deliver better shock with dramatically large tears/wounds in vital organs then the heavier round nose or pointed 180 grain loads bullets I used in the past. They are actually the proper weight for a 1:12" twist barrel apparently or at least so I've been told. Seem accurate none the less but I'm not really sure about the bullet weight twist thing Ron Spomer said something about twist rate actually has more to do with bullet length on the subject of accuracy. I'm still pursuing a better bullet that can deliver more of that energy into the game without the fragments which has been a big problem in the under 165 grain weight class. I've heard good things about Winchester's copper version of the XP line I may be changing next season.
My preferred round that I use out of my CZ 527 mini-mauser bolt action carbine. Can't believe that CZ ceased producing it. Absolute joy shooting that rifle.
Picked up a few boxes of these from Target Sports USA a few months back. Didn’t get a chance to hunt with them this year due to a recent move. My previous go to x39 has been 124gr S&B soft point and 154gr Wolf Soft Point. I’ve droped deer where they stand with the S&B
Shot this ammo today in my Bear Creek upper. I have a 4-12x40 vortex Sonora that I just put on. Last time I shot this ammo I had a 3x prism sight and shot about 2 inches. With the extra magnification and being able to hold a little more precise the groups dramatically decreased in size. I need to find some hunting videos with this ammo.
1947 was a long time ago. But lead and human bodies havent changed either. I have many to choose from but its an AK thats in arms length when I lay down to sleep.
I tried some PPU 10mm ammo and was shocked at how weak it performed. It was like watered down .40 S&W. I’m surprised their rifle ammo seems to be pretty good in the video.
Have you ran any more of these through AKs since this video was made? I’m interested to know if you have experienced any feeding issues. Would love to hear from other folks in the comments too.
Have purchased some of these since my last comment and so far have not had any problems cycling in a ZPAP 16". Thanks for your work Tools&Target GuyManDude! 👍👍👍

I'm gonna have to take some - buy another freezer I guess.

SKS will make a difference for hunting.
Good test T&T. That 10" barrel did better than I thought it would. I have a Norinco SKS and a Polytech AKS 762 so this is info I can use. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Thank you sir. Merry Christmas!
I miss my zpap:( great video as always. The rds look great and I randomly see them in local stores. I'm wondering about accuracy? I would love to see a video about accuracy from both tools
I'll see what I can come up with.😎👍
Your the best!
You're the man! Great video because I've been recently shopping for AK ammo just for defense and couldn't decide which one. Now I can.
this is honestly impressive ammo...weight retention, penetration, and expansion are all great for around 70ish cents a round. You have me really curious on the 154gr stuff. From all the old videos people had great expansion, 14-15 inches penetration, not as good weight retention though.
Agreed. I was impressed with this stuff.
Interesting. PPU has been good stuff out of rifles for me so far.😎👍
@@ToolsandTargets 🏁🏁PPU🏁🏁
I agree with you on the home defense..I would definitely use these ..great test tools
Thank you sir.😎👊
I'll have to get a box of these
This is decent stuff, I had a few boxes several years ago all since used up. Have never been able to find it again, but I did take a deer with this load one year. I hear some people say these do not feed well in some semi autos but as you showed it fed fine for you and I had no problems. Be a good option for a bolt action. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.
Yeah, I could see it hanging up on an AR type feed ramp setup. These Ak's will eat anything.😎👊
A mini 30 test would be 👍
I have never used these round nose loads but i can for sure tell you that the pointed soft point version is excellent. They will flat put some big bucks on the ground and i've figured out i like them actually better then Winchester power points. I was always afraid i might get cycling issues from the round nose being shorter so i've stuck to buying the pointed soft points. Good stuff!
Thank you sir. I've had a few other people say the pointed ones are good too.😎👍
Nice!! What about the Ppu psp vs Ppu sp non rn? What’s the difference between those and which would be better for home defense
I kind of like it..😂😂
I think it's great stuff.😎👍
Awsome video man so much better than the ballistics videos I have been finding. Very straight to the point and analysis
Good show, good velocity from both guns, perfect hunting round or defence.
Agreed😎👍
I thought the same thing. These are really nice performing rounds.😎👍
Great video! I picked up some of these rounds about 4 or 5 years ago for $10.00 per 20 at Cabellas. I have taken a few deer with it out of an SKS an AK. One shot kills all of them.
Good ammo for my hunting needs.
Definitely seems like some good stuff.😎👍
We use PPU Rifleline all the time in .303 FMJ for Classic Rifle Competition and practice. It's good ammo with very good quality brass, better than Hornady in my opinion as it's clean and not tarnished. They say the brass is good to reload also a number of times if you do that
Nice. Good to know about the brass.😎👍
Man that ZPAP was slinging those casing about 15 feet lol. Love both of these tools and another awesome test, appreciate ya T!
I was lookin for brass forever!😆😆😆 Thank you sir!
I had to watch this again. You're right about this round as far as for defense or hunting. Great stuff. Thanks again, Brother Tools. You're definitely doing it right! 👍
Thank you sir. These things performed fantastic.
Liking the rifle jelly tests! Awesome performance out of both barrel lengths. Definitely a nice hunting, bump in the night round. Thanks for sharing Tools!
Thank you sir. Appreciate ya!
That is awesome looking results! I can't see any reason to use any other Ammo. Thank you sir!
Agreed😎👍
Awesome test Tools ! that's by far the best 7.62 x 39 I've seen ! I will be getting some of that ammo asap ! appreciate you doing all the leg work for all of us !
Thank you sir. I like em.
Thank you sir. Loved to see it do so good from the shorter barrel.
@@ToolsandTargets yes indeed.
I just picked up some of this thanks for what you do & for your recommendations.Keep up the good work.
A good and informative video. I would like to see a comparison video with the PPU soft point spitzer.
PPU .30-30 works just fine ... I've used some and approve. Had to re-sight a couple clicks but that's normal with .30-30 brand to brand.
Good to hear.😎👍
I wouldn't hesitate to use the PPU SP or SP RN for hunting pigs or deer, I've had good results with both. But if someone is looking for near match-grade consistent results, I found the Federal Power-Shok to be able to do it, much to my initial surprise.
Interesting. Might have to check those out.
Great video. PPU is really stepping up their game.
I could see that with an AR and the small feed ramps and star chamber area. These Ak's seem to eat anything.
@@ToolsandTargets gotta love a tool that works!
Great video Tools. Love my AKs and will be picking up some of this ammo for home defense for sure!
Thank you sir. Pretty impressive.😎👍
Wonder if there would be any significant difference with a 20" SKS. Probably not much more than the AK though.
These AK's will cycle rocks I think.😆😆😆
Very impressive rounds , thanks for sharing
Absolutely.😎👍
Makes sense.😎👍
Great vid. I've taken 3 deer with these out of a 10.5" AR. They all were DRT. Great round for hunting.
My preferred round that I use out of my CZ 527 mini-mauser bolt action carbine. Can't believe that CZ ceased producing it. Absolute joy shooting that rifle.
Nice😎👍
Very good results out of the 7.62 round. I'm not sure one could ask for anything better out of rifle for a defensive round.
Agreed😎👍
Picked up a few boxes of these from Target Sports USA a few months back. Didn’t get a chance to hunt with them this year due to a recent move. My previous go to x39 has been 124gr S&B soft point and 154gr Wolf Soft Point. I’ve droped deer where they stand with the S&B
These look like some good stuff.😎👍
Great test! Looks like good food for my SKS mod
Absolutely😎👍
Shot this ammo today in my Bear Creek upper. I have a 4-12x40 vortex Sonora that I just put on.
Last time I shot this ammo I had a 3x prism sight and shot about 2 inches. With the extra magnification and being able to hold a little more precise the groups dramatically decreased in size.
I need to find some hunting videos with this ammo.
1947 was a long time ago.
But lead and human bodies havent changed either.
I have many to choose from but its an AK thats in arms length when I lay down to sleep.
x39 is a mean round.😎👊
I tried some PPU 10mm ammo and was shocked at how weak it performed. It was like watered down .40 S&W. I’m surprised their rifle ammo seems to be pretty good in the video.
Definitely not surprised 10mm is watered down. Par for the course these days.😣
Thanks for the great information. I have stayed away from PPU in the past due to a bad experience with PPU 9mm.
Don't think I've tried any 9mm from them. It's hard for me to keep track.😆
I would so start a gun channel if I didn’t live in the suburbs. What a sick setup
Definitely gonna have to keep my eyes peeled for some of that! Great test ! Thanks!
Thank you sir.😎👍
Have you ran any more of these through AKs since this video was made?
I’m interested to know if you have experienced any feeding issues.
Would love to hear from other folks in the comments too.
Have purchased some of these since my last comment and so far have not had any problems cycling in a ZPAP 16".
Thanks for your work Tools&Target GuyManDude! 👍👍👍
Glad to see you test these. I got them for my ruger american ranch.

Thanks for the video.and test. Definitely some good performance Ammo. Good defense and hunting ammunition.

The value of this test with both barrel lengths is great. The track of the 10" test would probably mirror that of the 16" barrel at 75M.
Appreciate you checkin it out. I usually try to use a couple barrel lengths if it's a single ammo test.😎👊

But please please do a 50AE vid soon please on gel tests and at least 3 different hollow point manufacturers
