    I took my very first deer, a really nice 12 pointer on my 14th birthday with that cartridge, only I was using the gun it was designed for, an AK47 variant long before everyone was clamoring for them. The same rifle has taken many more since then, my wife took her first deer with it about 5 years ago and my oldest son took his first modern rifle deer with it when he was 12 and his biggest deer, a beautiful 10 pointer on his 18th birthday. I have to pry it out of my wifes gun cabinet to let our youngest son take it out to keep up the tradition of taking their first deer with it. I have used everything from the corelock rounds to the 154 gr tula soft points and it really seems to like the heavier ones, but a LOT of deer have fallen to the 123hp tula rounds on our hunting land. Even had my luckiest ever shot with it. On the morning of closing day of deer season about 15 years ago, I took it out with me just to say I had hu ted the whole season through and had no plnas to take anything. I had already taken 2 bucks and 2 or 3 does for the freezer but along about the time I was going to get out of the stand, danged if 5 does didnt walk out 200 yards out from me. Well, I had a choice, try for one or let them all walk. I decided to try for one and aimed straight for the head at the biggest one of the bunch that was right at 212 yards out. I figured if I missed or the bullet nicked a twig, it would just scare them off, but if I hit, it would drop right there. Well, as soon as I came back on target from the recoil, I watched the doe litteraly just fall right over and not move a muscle. When I got to her, I could see an exit wound about the size of a quarter at the base of her off side ear but didnt see any entrance wound anywhere. Well I took her back to the house where I dressed all our deer and the wife comes out and asked "what happened to her eye?". Damned if I hadnt put the round straight through her rt eye. Never in another hundred years of hunting could I do that. Worked out great because we got well over 100 lbs of meat because none was torn up.

    Love this cartridge for deer and hogs only problem is finding factory loaded hunting bullets almost everything is fmj, after they stopped importing Russian ammo it got tuff to find a buddy used hollow points on hogs here in Texas in a AR platform but just opened his last can of what he had in his supply’s and can’t find any to replenish his supply he might shoot 20 plus in a night he goes on ranches to clear them off as pests. Odd that my first reply didn't post, but I wanted to confirm that the Tula 154gr SPs are amazing. I use them on Deer and Hog out of my CZ527 American and they hit with quite a bit more authority than the 150gr SPs out of my Christensen Arms 300 Blackout. We don't get to hunt Bear in Florida very often, but I have no doubt this thing would take a Black Bear on the spot. Another nice point about the Tula 154gr SPs, they tend to be spot on box to box. I bought 400rnds out of the same batch originally and have added new boxes in from time to time, the zero is still spot on.

    Used mine this year with 123 gr PPU RNSP, took two deer with it. First deer quartered away caught the liver and lung stopped by the inside of the shoulder blade, didnt even make it 20 feet. Second had a light primer strike for the first shot, was able to get a shot on(low lung shot in and out) and went about 150 yards before collapsing. Never had a problem with PPU before, but will probably try the hornady black next year.

Took it out again and it ate stanky old Chinese surplus and newish Barnaul like a champ. The rest of the PPU I put through an SKS and had no probs. Was weird, I would figure it would have problems with berdan primers if anything

  • @GeorgeSemel
    @GeorgeSemel Рік тому +3

    Well, you can always handload your own, I am a bit surprised you don't. Hornaday made an excellent 123 gr SP for the cartridge. I am the first to admit the cartridge is not my cup of tea. They work on deer-sized games and reasonable distances, I like better SD numbers for big game. 0.240 or better does it for me. 0.242 SD, you get 120 gr 6.5mm, 140 gr 7mm, 165 gr 30 cal, and 130 gr 270. All of them are right up there for taking deer-sized game and then some. Oh and you don't have to shoot to the far side of the moon either. That little Ruger would be sweet with a fixed 4x Leupold. Plenty of glass and you keep the rifle light and very handy just what you would want in a truck gun.

    I've had my Ruger American Ranch (7.62x39) and I love it. However, it's not my primary deer rifle. My primary deer rifle is the Ruger Gunsite Scout (.308). The American is mainly for my wife. It's very accurate and low recoil. The only complaint I have had with the American is the fact that it doesn't like steel cased ammo. The magazine is steel and it's the same magazine used in the Ruger Mini-30. Evidently, the steel magazine and the steel cased ammo causes problems. It may be just my rifle. I've never heard anyone else talk about that problem. BTW, for deer hunting, I use Winchester Power Points. I use Hornady SST for other critters (coyotes, etc.) and PMC FMJ for target shooting. And yes, I have to adjust my scope when changing from one brand to another.

    Center of your first group was 1.5" low. Your last shot was almost 2" low. You moved an inch and it showed an inch of correction from a warm barrel. You then moved it another 1" and it showed that inch of correction from a warm barrel. I'd bet if you let it cool down and make another cold barrel shot you're hitting an inch high. Just an assumption. Catch them deer!

    According to my research and what I have learned at the range.
    I am a Reloaded/Handloader. I do a lot of research BEFORE I reload ANYTHING.
    The 7.62x39 is equal to the 30-30 Winchester.
    Both are .308 in diameter, Both truck along at the SAME velocity.
    The only difference that I see is the BULLET design.
    The 7.62x39 from the factory is a Pointed Full Metal Jacket and the 30-30 can and will use the Soft Point Bullet.
    Both can use Cast Bullets and the velocities are the same, if the bullet weights are the same.
    The 30-30 is a Hunting round . The 7.62x39 is a Military round.
    The 30-30 came first and the 7.62x39 came along much later but based on the 30-30 ballistics.
    Just my opinion.

    • @lynnjr457
      @lynnjr457 Рік тому +4

      Respectfully, most 7.62x39 bullets are .311, not .308. Because of this, Ruger changed their barrels to .310 in recent years. Most factory ammo will be .311 diameter. Early Rugers were in .308 which is why you may be finding handloading data with that diameter bullet. Ruger mini 30s were considered horribly inaccurate guns for years until people figured the bore issue out and someone actually spec'd a 7.62x39mm bullet to determine it wasn't .308 like many folks had assumed. It's best to verify the bore of your rifle first before selecting what to buy when reloading for accuracy's sake. The Ruger Americans are running a .310 bore if I remember correctly.
      And again respectfully, the 7.62x39mm was pattered after the 7.92×33mm Kurz from the MP 43/STG.44 series of rifles. The 30-30, while a great round that happens to be balletically similar to the 7.62x39mm, had nothing to do with it's development or even that of the 7.92×33mm Kurz, it's predecessor. The 7.92×33mm Kurz was basically a cut down 7.92×57mm Mauser so that it could share the same manufacturing components. The Germans were looking for an "Assault Rifle" caliber to fit the gap between their K98 Battle Rifles and their 9mm MP40 sub machine guns.

      @@lynnjr457Well said. I would only add that true military 7.62x39 mm (M43) was boat tail. Most target ammo of today is based on M67 7.62x39 mm, 124 gr FMJ ammo introduced by ex Yugoslavia. It has similar ballistics to M43 up to 400 yards, but poor after that-similar to 9 mm pistol bullet

      Did you change out the powder or just re use the factory charge? Been considering loading surplus ammo with different projectiles as primers are still rare as hens teeth. Was under the impression that it was dangerous to put a heavier projectile with the same powder charge. Can't get powder easy where I am either. I bought some 7.62x54r cheap to one day load projectiles in .303 British if one day primers and powder reappear. I experimented with reloading primers with cap gun caps but not ready to go buy $500 of reloading equipment for a primer solution that MIGHT work. Every one I "rebuilt" went bang when I fired the empty case in a rifle, but not sure how it would work when I needed it to reliably fire a cartridge

The 527s are either too beat up or too expensive.. im dropping down to maybe get a gen 2 american in 7.62.. im worried that it wont be enough for my first deer hunt. Dont plan on going out past 100 yards definitely going to need some sifferent ammo than the wolf ive saved up for years...

    I had a really cheap scope when I i was in college and first starting to use scopes, and the turret adjustments on it were backwards. So it referenced the movement of the crosshair, not the POI. So if you turned "UP" it took the crosshairs up, not down. Which was fine as long as you understood it. But thats not how most scopes work, and it broke me for life. (Even right now im wondering if I wrote that right or I have it backwards here). For some reason I i just cannot shake that early programming, so to this day, if I'm 2" low and adjust the scope, I end up 4" low because I'm turning the turret the wrong direction, and I have to stop and think my way through it. The only way I i can do it easy is on a sled and watching the reticle move to the POI.

    With a good corlokt or similar it's a good deer round under 300 yards which most folks hunting a food plot or a hole in the woods which is well under that out to 100 most of the time it's perfect especially for kids and recoil sensitive people...
    For some reason I can't get the beginning of video. What brand and grain weight is that ammo.

Also multiple deer is still deer you don't add an S just like multiple sheep is sheep not sheeps can't tell if you're intentionally doing that or not but then again you are from the south so I wouldn't be surprised.
