I saw one of your (Sloan Implement) combines helping harvest some winter wheat for a farmer that had lost everything in a tornado. Millennial Farmer was recording Farm Rescue helping those folks out. Thanks for supporting them.
Whoever thought up those pins was a smart person who made that so much more expensive than the older models 😂that’s my opinion on them lol great video thanks for sharing
Some interesting technical content here Zeth. I'm not sure that motor arrangement is a good design. Thank you Sir for taking us along. Good that you have your customer's best interest at heart on warranty , rather than the OEM.
Thanks for another great video ZK. It was interesting and enjoyable. Wow. Big job. Replacing that rear drive motor was not easy and heavy duty for sure. Most of the steps you showed us you had down pat and assume you reviewed the plan in your tech manual. I would be somewhat afraid of that job but you came thru in flying colors. Nice work ZK. That was heavy duty work all the way. I learned a lot watching you on this one. You amaze me. You just have at it and know your plan. My sincere compliments to you ZK for doing this motor replacement work. Thanks for everything ZK. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.
I have a set of tool steel wedges I had made with nice chamfered edges and various angles . They would have been perfect for getting that tie rod off . One each side and tap them in .. if the space allows 👍
As I watch the precision / complicated parts you work on....Can’t imagine the teams of Design Engineers who originally created these unbelievable machines....
Thanks for another great video Zeth. That sure was a heavy drive motor and I like to picture weights in my head and was trying to relate it to how many bags of sugar it equaled. Here in the UK a standard bag is about 2lb (1KG) and that sure would have been one mighty pile of sugar 🙂. I take the old motor goes back to the factory for re-manufacturing?
How much of the horsepower does it take just to move that behemoth? I have a 1928 Rumely Oil Pull 25-40 that rates 40hp for the pulley and 25hp for the drawbar accounting for the hp it takes to move the thing. It's interesting to see the new technology. Thank you for sharing great, informative videos. Please stay safe, and God bless.
Man I tell you what John Deere has it figured out. Everything I look at whether it's in person or in a video like one of yours their engineering is just really something else. I like how they have the hydraulic power going to that drive motor. You were smart to put those hoses back on. I did a drive motor a little while back on 120 foot boom man lift and I put the little plastic caps in overnight..came back the next morning to 56 gallons of oil on the floor lol.. you only do that once
It is amazing how complex the design is. I appreciate your methodical approach to the repairs you do. There is a good lesson there. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Saw that 2 1000 traded in at our local JD dealer. Crawled all over those massive green giants. Makes me wonder why they were traded in. Cost of ownership vs lease option must be very high for one season.
Good job Zeth, awesome video! Is that the only way to seal up a RWD hyd motor like that or was the motor replaced seeing it was under warranty? Keep up the good work! 👍👍
Thanks for posting this. Nice work. Question 1: Would the top cap have gone down easier if the strap tension had been released (at minute 20:47)? Question 2: How did you get those down pins out of the tie-rod end? Question 3: What were the failure symptoms of the old motor?
Hi, I am a new subscriber from AUS and I’m really enjoying your videos so thanx very much for posting. Unlike many contributors, your commentary is very instructional and informative so please say as much as you want as it’s all great info.
That takes more than a notion to replace that motor , as always , good job Zeth ! I'm not so sure that everything new is necessarily better than the older stuff .
That flashlight taste good? Can I make a suggestion. Go to Olight. They have some great flashlights including some that clip on the brim of your hat. A little pricey but worth it I think.
This guy has some big guns for arms. He sits down to torque bolts to 235# without any problems. If it were me, I’d have to stand on a cheater bar to get things down that tight. Nice job. Good video!!!
Great video like always! thanks for the overview of the two models and comparing it to the 790, that is quite the savings and productivity gains. Nice work on the camera angles, the appropriate edits and having it in one video. Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi zeth, another great video, our seasons now starting here .I do new holland and already got combines breaking so know how hard it can be especially working alone long hours .but as you say we keep it going keep up the good work .
Hey zeth really enjoy your videos I have seen your grease gun you need to buy the locknlube grease coupler also I'm from south east saskatchew an keep up the great videos. Brent
Good job, thank you for posting,. I have never been too comfortable with that type of rear wheel drive, I remember the early J.D. Tractors with front wheel assist, not one of J.D. best ideas. Aside from that the X9 Combine is very good
Hey there Zeth, I hope this finds you well? 🙏 Those X9's are massive when compared to everything that came before them. 😮 That watch on your wrist looks awfully expensive for a Service Technician to be wearing while on the job? Another great fix, and your attention to detail is commendable! 👏 I hope you have a good one! "Nothing Runs Like A Deere" 🦌 👍 🇺🇲
ZK. How many thousands of dollars in drive belts are there in those 1000 series combine machieans. They look like a person could spend a whole day per side just replceing drive belts along with a good burrows belt tension gauge. Oh, one may want to talk to God about which way that belt went, even with that pretty belt pathway diagram. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👈😎
Hmm hydraulic driven wheels never would have thought ... Worked in Navy Aviation what pressure is your standard op pressure... we did 3k and we used a red fluid ... cant remember the spec or civilian equivalent
Way too complicated for the application. This stuff today is so over engineered. I worked in aircraft manufacturing for 36 years and this combine is just short of space shuttle complicated. Sorry for the rant but I just don't understand. Yes improvements are good but farm machinery today is just over the top. The basics are the same. Simple you cut the grain get it into the machine rub it against a metal grate of some sort then blow some air through it to seperate grain from chaff and Bob's your uncle....
Yes but your uncle didn't have a combine moving at 7200 bu/ per acre and 690Hp that drives itself and controls the auger cart tractor at the same time. The level of technology of this machine blows my mind and I literally understand how everything works on this machine. This machine makes me a little nervous because literally everything on the machine wants to kill you. But, no matter what I still keep million dollar machines running for my customers. When you need a little $16k motor replaced on a million dollar machine and have an expert diagnose and replace it under warranty... The customer is grateful you could get it fixed under warranty and he should not have a problem with it next year.
@@ZKMasterTech Sorry I didn't mean to get you going and you are right. Guess I am old school (64 now) so I am hesitant to stuff I don't understand. Have to say it is light years away from the old 45 I used to run...
Hah, totally different ballgame from the wheel motor I replaced in a toro 4500 rough mower at work. The old motor had a good sized pinhole that corroded its way through the cast iron. We were constantly filling the machine up with oil and the mechanic couldn’t find where it was coming from. I eventually found it but the way the machine is built I had to have the mower on Jack stands and lay on my back on a creeper and then man handle the motor up until we could get bolts in. Now keep in mind, I’m not a mechanic. I’m a laborer with an interest in mechanical gizmos. So often I’ll take on some of the stuff I know the mechanic won’t do. But it was a fun experience. And I don’t know what the hell was going on with the motor but it had like 6-7 hydraulic ports on it. So that was fun 😂 Honestly looks like your job is pretty straight forward aside from the behemoth of a wheel motor you’re dealing with. And that strange assembly with the oil tubes. That’s weird.
New to the channel, I've been using the JD lithium complex to grease my tractor and mowers/spindles. Should I be using the polyurea grease? And are they compatible? Thanks!
The way you explain every step of the way is so amazing haven’t had any experience with the Combines. Have stinting farming with an old A84 . why are john deer so complicated and why do they break down so often Repairs and replacement parts are expensive. Most of the time when you talk to the farm equipment mechanics they have a better way. maybe the R&D department at John Deer should be consulting them
If there's one thing I'm picking up from all these great videos is that JD engineers are a couple of steps up the convoluted design ladder from German engineers.
When putting that motor in, I would’ve put a lifting link in the tire bolt hole, put the strap around that, and then used a 1/4 ton come along to level it out.

Sometimes they can be vague. But they are pretty good for the most part
I’ve done this job on a s680 multiple times. It’s not a fun job lol 😂 , also it was in the field.
It was funny watching you trying to get that motor to slide in there 😂 the hesitation was real and I could see why!
Its crazy how large and heavy that hydraulic motor is. It is good to see what you are getting into with an x9 combine.
