I use Finnabair Art Basics Gesso Clear with much the same results that you obtain with the Satin Glaze. The stuff is a godsend on thinner paper! Thanks K!
I tried to search for that on Amazon UK and on Jackson’s art some time ago but couldn’t get hold of it. I have heard good things about that and would love to try it but sadly not available here. I might go on an online search again!. Thanks for reminding me about it!
Great demonstration! I tend to use my gelatos dry too but think I may have to give this statin glaze a go because as you mentioned the friction makes this harder work when not activated, I’ve found this particularly sore on my fingers when doing this on a entire background. Hi! On your recommendation I just picked up an 8 oz bottle from Blick in the US for around $8.64. I got the smallest size to try out. Prior to this I was using gesso to give the paper more tooth and weight, but the Liquitez professional leaves a very gritty surface that I don't want to use my good watercolor brushes and colored pencils on. Thanks for sharing your technique!
Thank you! This was very helpful as I am new to the adult coloring! I love watching your videos, you do a good job! Your pages are always beautiful! Can you recommend a good water color pencil set?
Thank you so much for watching! Depends on your budget, my favourite are the Caran d’ache Museum (but they are the at the very top end). However, Derwent watercolours as well as Faber Castell Albrecht Durer are very good. Mid to budget range I would suggest the Staedtler Karat aquarelle. I would recommend getting a small set or a few open stock and trying them out before you splash out on a larger set. Happy colouring and best wishes.
@@wowyathink5982 Hi. Thank you. I welcome all help and ideas. I did order the faber castell. I think they were less than 40.00. I like them. I will definitely look at Arteza also. I have some of their pencils that I like. I am slowly learning you can do a lot with a coloring book, and I am having fun. Thanks again 😊
Thank you very much for a brilliant tutorial. You explained that you leave the pages to dry completely for a few days, and that you also put some weight on them. For the later I'm guessing you are closing the colouring book, and how long have you been waiting for to put the weight on it? Thank you
So pleased you liked it! I let the coated page air dry for 2 days (keep the page open). Then, I will put a weight on it and leave it for possibly another 2 days, which often does the job! Yes I have to close the colouring book when I have the weight on top of it, so it flattens the pages.
Great video! I got my satin glazing liquid from Amazon in the US. I have an issue with how scratchy it makes the paper but I have only been using one coat. I guess I should try. It does work really well. I wanted to ask; in a number of your books, like on that picture with the bears in the washing machine from your 10 books to finish video, you use a gold or silver paint of some kind. What is that product you use? I love all the effects you do on your pictures!
Thanks for watching! The gold is probably the Coliro Finetec Gold paints (specific one is arabic gold). The silver on the washing machine is loose glitter (I think it is called Stampendous silver halo glitter mix). However, you could use the Uniball Signo sparkling silver gel pen which gives a really sparkly shine instead of the loose glitter.
This was so helpful!! Thank you for making this video! I do have one question: can you use coloured pencils on top of the Satin glaze? For example Polychromos for the image and using water media on the background. Or would it be better to only use the Satin glaze for the background and nothing on the image itself.
Hi, thanks so much for watching. Yes, I sometimes use a harder pencils like Polychromos on top of the satin glaze and it works fine for me, it will feel like a rougher surface so it’s fine on pictures where you will mainly use watercolour and only use coloured pencil for a few parts. If you want to colour the picture mainly with coloured pencil I would probably only use the satin glaze liquid where you want to put the watercolour. Hope that helps.
Hi, never tried putting it over pencil but I cannot see that being a problem but would be wise to try it first as a test. Alternatively, you could colour your picture in pencil and just put the liquid over the parts of the page where you want to use Neo’s. 2 coats seems to be enough, just let it dry in between (takes about 10-15 minute to dry depending on the size of area). After the second coat leave for 24-48 hours at least with the page where you applied it open to the air.
I am wondering if this process would work with alcohol color markers? 🤔I have tons but I refuse to used them because they bleed through the pages, I learned the hard way when I ruined a page in my Kerby Rosanes book. I was just sick about it.
I think you can use alcohol markers on them from what I have read and seen. I don’t think I have tried it over satin glaze myself but have over clear gesso and the alcohol marker doesn’t go through. However, some people say that the tip of the marker may get damaged due to the rougher surfaces but I guess a brush tip may work okay rather than a bullet tip. Give it a go!
It was the silky crayons by TBC, link here: www.amazon.co.uk/TBC-Best-Crafts-Washable-Watercolour/dp/B088W9N26S/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=Silky+crayon&qid=1624630889&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A5C8Q6SC26HLI&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzN0JOSzg0OUlMQUxKJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjY4NzA4MlY3Q0NSQ1QxWUg0VSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMDIyNDA2OVVLWUlSUk4xQlFLJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
K, thank you for this video,, I tried it, but I think I used way too much liquid...lol. Anyway it does work perfectly. I used some Derwent Inktense pencils and it works well. Thanks again...
I tried the satin glaze on a Rita Berman page and the watercolor was kinda slippery on it and would not lay down evenly. I also had problems using pencils on it. I applied it just like you did. Does it not work the same on all paper. That book was a bit slippery not as dry as other book pages. Any advice?
After I apply it the surface seems slightly rougher rather than smooth, are you sure it was the Golden satin glazing liquid you used? I don’t use coloured pencil on it (and if I do it’s for very limited areas only), I just use watercolour pencils, paints and water-based markers/pens. The surface can sometimes end up being a little uneven but I can live with that if it allows me to use a variety of watercolour mediums. Sorry I can’t be more help.
I cannot see why not, I have used alcohol markers on gesso treated pages but beware of the tips getting damaged although on a page with satin glazing liquid it is a smoother finish. However, I would use brush tips rather than bullet tip alcohol markers.
What do you suggest to use on the outside cover of Johanna basfords books especially Ivy and the inky butterfly. I have finished the book but not sure what medium to do the outside covers. Any suggestions?
I have never coloured the book covers myself but I would use lots of different media but mainly pencil (as can achieve great results and effects with them), paints and gel pens.
Thanks for sharing!! Oh, if only we had Blick and Hobby lobby in the UK! You have so many craft stores in the US and so much more choice. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for this video, I've learned a lot and I am certainly going to look where to buy this in the Netherlands where I live. I just bought a set of Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer pencils and a few sets of metallic paints and gelatos so I can't wait to try this. I am very glad it also works on the Amazon paper, I love the Nice Little Town series but I didn't buy them because of the poor quality paper. I am also very slow in coloring with normal pencils, of takes so much time, now I maybe can create more pictures using watercolors.
I can’t fully remember as I made this video a while ago but I just wanted to show how I apply it and then test the difference it makes, which I showed with demos at the back of the respective books. I might make a follow-up video showing what it’s like to colour an actual page pre-treated with satin glazing liquid. It’s also a time thing, I don’t like my videos to be over 30-35 minutes long as I have issues with uploading.
Thank you I know is how do treat better golden glazing bottle I saw Amazon uk 🇬🇧 have got like ohuhu marker treat for next page marker won’t mark next page I try it I have not test yet ? Water based artzea mark I used try golden glazing bottle thank you for show me I will learn thank you so much I am deaf 🧏♀️ live uk 🇬🇧
I got it from Hobbycraft in the UK - I think it’s a Daler Rowny brush and has synthetic bristles. Thanks for watching! It should be available in Amazon
Ive done this technique long ago with the watercolour and what happened was it never dried. I let the book opened for weeks and it would still smudge. I loved the brilliance on the colours and all that but couldnt deal with the not drying thing plus using a hair dryier wont be a thing for me. That was my experience. I inicially bought it to use with watercolours but i only use it with inktense blocks, they sure dry.
Hi, whilst I’m colouring on it I have found that you have to be careful as the medium stays wet for longer so it will move. However, once I let it dry overnight I’ve found it’s fine. Maybe the formula might have been changed since you last used it but I’m not sure? I also put a paper in between when I store the book away just to be on the safe side. Thanks for watching!
It indeed depends on the pigments/dye used. I also use this technique on the cheap Amazon paper, and I love it, but I don't do watercolour on it, more like painting with Supertips or Pitt Pens. The colours will not go into the paper, but lay on the glazing liquid layer.
@@ColouringwithK If you use supertips, then you can spread them on the paper with a harder brush after applying them directly on the paper. They need a long time to dry though. With the Pitt Pens, you can just colour as is, blending them out. When dry, they don't smear at all.
I’m very interested in finding a medium to waterproof my pages, this medium in particular is crazy expensive in Mexico. Do you know of any other equivalent mediums? I have Liquitex Clear Gesso for Paint by Numbers, but it’s very toothy and also hard to find!
You could try Daniel Smith watercolour ground, I find it smoother than clear gesso but rougher than satin glazing liquid. Also, Finnabair clear gesso seems to be fairly good as mentioned by others. If you want to waterproof or seal your pages you could use gel matte medium or gel gloss medium depending on the finish you prefer. Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks so much for watching and I feel it is definitely worth a try and allows us to use watercolours on poorer quality paper.
After you put the product on the two coloring pages I fully expected to see you at least start to color one of them. Why did you not do that>?
I can’t fully remember as I made this video a while ago but I just wanted to show how I apply it and then test the difference it makes, which I showed with demos at the back of the respective books. I might make a follow-up video showing what it’s like to colour an actual page pre-treated with satin glazing liquid. It’s also a time thing, I don’t like my videos to be over 30-35 minutes long as I have issues with uploading.
Thanks happy to find out about this product.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!

Wonderful!
Where did you get yr paintbrush from please? What are the bristles made of?
I got it from Hobbycraft in the UK - I think it’s a Daler Rowny brush and has synthetic bristles. Thanks for watching! It should be available in Amazon
@@ColouringwithK thank you so much. Great tutorial. X
Do you also use colored pencil on on the paper you've prepared.
I use coloured pencils for limited areas on prepped pages, mainly water based media, especially watercolour pencils
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Per Golden, "gloss glazing liquid is basically paint without the pigment", and can be used alone or with any amount of paint.
Thanks for the information! 😊
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thank you!
@@DieterPrivate I have super tips and Pitt pens so I might try that, thanks for letting me know!
@@ColouringwithK yes, this is incredibly helpful! Thank you!!
Cool 😊
Thankyou!
