- Hi everyone. In this video, I start a new series where I share the various media I use for producing backgrounds in my colouring books.
In this first part I demo how I use acrylic and watercolour paints, and include some coloured pictures as examples. I hope you find it useful and thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful colouring and painting techniques. I absolutely love how you do your coloured pages.
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you for all your videos. As a beginner I find these technique and what you use very helpful. I also love the finished pictures they are stunning.
Thanks so much, I’m pleased you found them helpful. Have a good weekend!
Thanks for including examples with the background types. I also really like your pace-not to fast, not too slow for me. 😎 I love your rabbits, BTW. And I love your ducks. I really enjoy your graphic, illustrative style. So striking! 🤩
Awesome, thank you!
You can also use the satin glazing liquid for blending acrylic paint. It slows down the drying time allowing for easier blends.
Yes, that’s right. I haven’t tried it with acrylics yet but hope to do so soon. Thanks for watching and for the tip!
Love your background tutorial you make it look so easy I think I need to do a practice page like your . Really enjoying your videos thank you
Thanks so much 😊 I really appreciate your lovely comment
Loved all three parts
Fantastic butterflies and whale and owl. Basically, everything is amazing!
Thank you! 😊
Hi K! I’m rewatching this series, for blending acrylics you can use a fan brush, or even a makeup brush to get diffused edges a slow dry medium also helps. You ARE an artist 🥰
PS. I cannot get the salt to work and bloom for me!
Thanks so much - I find that sometimes the salt doesn’t bloom as much for me too. I’m going to experiment with it to see what helps it along. I will try the fan brush out with the acrylics - ThankYou!
ty so much for your videos they are helping me so much i was overwhelmed with coloring now i think it will be a lot more fun learning so much from you !
Aww thank you and you’re very welcome 😊
I just found your channel, and subscribed. I am really enjoying your videos and love this series you've begun. I am looking forward to seeing more videos and your techniques! I use neo II's in my coloring books, along with pencil and gel pens but I have not tried using acrylics. So now seeing your beautiful coloring pages (watched your Nov. vid first) you have inspired me to give it a try in some coloring books.
You mentioned Dede Willigham (what a inspiration she is!) I have enjoyed watching her for years. She has inspired me so much, I have tried acrylics in altered books thanks to her and love her art. I guess timing is everything because I am past the feeling of "What if I ruin this book!" lol funny how we can be afraid of a coloring book.. or whatever.. So thank you for sharing your beautiful work !
Thank you so much for subbing and a warm welcome to the channel! I love using Neo’s too, they are one of my favourite supplies. You should definitely be brave and colour with a variety of media and experiment because I’m sure you’ll get much satisfaction and enjoyment from the process itself, I certainly do! Thanks again!
I REALY like the idea of this series, I am trying to start doing backgrounds and it's really helpful to see the different kind. Thank you! :)
Thanks so much Courtney, glad you liked it. Part 2 should be up next week, thanks again for watching!

I will definitely try! Thanks for watching
K, this is a wonderful video. Thank you so much for sharing your background techniques. This is an awesome idea.
You are so welcome! I’m so pleased you liked it Pat x
Just found your channel and your background ideas are just what I've been looking for. But could you tell me what media you used for the Gold on the whale in this video? So pretty!
Hi Lisa, welcome to the channel. I think I used Decoart metallic gold acrylic paint from Amazon. 😊
Just discovered your site. Looks good. Have never used acrylic paint on my pages. Does it not seep thru to back page ?
Acrylic has never seeped through for me as it’s a thicker consistency (since I use it undiluted usually), it works really well compared to say, watercolour paint
Colouring with K thanks for your reply.
K....wonderful! I was wondering how you get into the little spaces in between? I made a mess in one of my books. And I have had such a time with white gel pens. What do you use for wings and glass.
Hi Beth, I use pastel coloured pencils for wings and then use glitter watercolour on top e.g. The Art Spirits magic fairy dust (Etsy). For glass I use white/light blue pencil and then over the top I use silver gel pen for highlights and may be a Sakura clear glaze gel pen over the whole thing
Very useful, thank you :)
So pleased to hear that Emily and thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@ColouringwithK No worries, I always struggle with backgrounds so I found the information very useful :)
But for acrylic or watercolor I need coloring books with special paper right?
Hi. I still use watercolour and acrylic on standard colouring book paper (only very small amounts or on limited areas on create space / Amazon paper but more, eg for backgrounds on better quality / thicker paper like you would find in Hanna Karlzon’s, Maria Trolle’s or Johanna Basford’s books). You still have to be careful not to use excessive water and the pages flatten out okay afterwards with only a little buckling remaining which I don’t mind. If the paper is thin and I want to use watercolour I will pre-prepare it with satin glazing liquid or gesso first (a couple of layers on the page) and then watercolour or acrylic works great on it. Hope that helps x
@@ColouringwithK OK, thank you 🙂
@@ColouringwithK And with Gesso the paper doesn't wave?
Thankyou for the interesting tutorial. When you say acrylic paint is it the Americana or acrylic paint in tubes. Is the Americana a matte craft paint.❤️❤️
Hi Robyn. I use the Americana Decoart paint which comes in matte and gloss versions as far as a I know, I have mainly matte colours but also a satin black paint in the same brand too.
Nice video keep sharing
I joined you hope you too 😊
Thank you, I will. Best wishes
