@@dcode1000yeah that’s something I’ve noticed as of lately. I’ve seen a surge in Alfa romeos on the road since the debut of the quadforlogfio that came out during like the mid 2010’s like 2017 but I didn’t see alfas really ever before then so I still don’t see many. If they had more brand prestige and were more of iconic brand in the U.S. I think they’d sell a lot better because there’s premium cars from other car brands that are still in the ball park of being Alfa competitors that aren’t known for reliability, nice looking and feeling bells and whistles, some no bells and whistles that still sell a lot better and come from brands that are viewed better by more people too.

The Giulietta Quadrifoglio is very hated, in my opinion i have no idea why. Yes the quality isn't the best, but oh man it drives like no other hatch. It's very affordable for what it provides and with regular maintenance there's nothing to worry about. Extremely underrated car.

    • @sbottono
      @sbottono Рік тому +1

The problem with the Brera, and why I hate it, is that it wanted to be a much bigger thing that it is. The car feels soulless, since it doesn't have that charisma that made Alfa special. They wanted it to be a car that could rival their german competitors performance wise, but the couldn't. And to be fair I think the Brera doesn't even look that special, since in the front it looks like a standard 159 and the different back doesn't make it special. So I think a standard 159 Sportwagon would have been much better. Of course, you have your opinion, but I think the Brera is one of the most useless cars made. I just don't see a market that would like this.

A few facts to add a bit of context and share a bit more info with those who like this matter:
    - The Giulietta was a car Alfa had to make, it's blessing and curse was that in EU it sold very well, it looked so great that hey practically never re-styled it, a 2010 project that could compete with all the more boring competitors for almost 11 years,. indeed some aspects of it started becoming obsolete alfway. I've owned one for 6 years, never had any faults, with some good rubber, 1.35 tons, 170 HPs (gas), manual, with sport pack (-2 springs, Q brakes) was undeniably fun to drive and, surprise surprise, didn't understeer at all, it pulled easily more than 1g in corners, if you made it understeer, it meant you couldn't drive it.
    - 147, this car was the reason I ended up buying a Giulietta in my 20s. It was revolutionary, in a world where all hatches were FWD, this car introduced pure mechanical handling with double wishbones at the front and multilink at the back. I drove it on track and even a base diesel version could pull more than 1g in turns, everyone in italy loved it. It was the first fun to drive hatchback (except some limited versions of other competing models)
    - The 4C was expensive, because, unlike even some supercars, had a carbon tub. Go find a competitor to it. If you haven't bought it for the radio, you clearly don't know what a sports car is and you don't deserve and should never buy one. They are selling for up double the price now.
    - Stelvio, I tried to hate it, test drove it and purchased it right away. It's not like it drives better than most SUVs out there, it drives like a RWD sedan (better than most, except the Giulia, all others have worse suspensions and similar weight), you can't even compare it to an SUV. Ferrari engineers have worked on the suspensions (alfa can't say that in public but it was names who worked on the Enzo), has Zero understeer, and amazing 4WD system that works better than the one of a Macan, weighs 100 to 200kg less than any competitor, is reliable, sporty and comfortable at the same time (even without active suspensions), even a mid tier 2.0l gas does 0-100 in 5.7s, while still giving you 650km range. It's the total car, which sold less than it could due to sub standard infotainment at launch (which is what consumers care the most nowadays)
Thanks for including also some honorable mentions! The 164 is a legend in italy, sharing the same chassis of more "boring" sedans, drove much better and had much more interesting engines (like the 2.0 v6 turbo). It was the first car I drove, and, while the FWD was a sin at the time to those Alfa 75 fans, with only 150hp it got effortlessly over 200kph, handled in turns and cruised with less than 70 decibels on board. I will never forget the shape of the dashboard (still a sexy design today - try saying the same of a contemporary BMW) and the super sporty front and rear seats, they don't make them like these anymore.
I ended up almost buying a GT, same 147 platform but longer wheelbase and bertone looks. God I loved the interior, 4 real adult seats, large trunk, interesting engines, test drove a few, but had to move to another country. I still think it looks like the most beautiful daily coupe ever built (thanks Bertone).

I'd add the 156, 159 and Brera. IMHO the MiTo and the Giulietta weren't bad, but the fact that they were the only cars in the lineup (together with the 4C) was very disappointing. Even now the Alfa lineup is nowhere near complete, as Alfa Romeo only sells the Tonale and the awesome but aging Giulia and Stelvio. Something is gonna break sooner or later…there is a reason Giulias and Stelvios have 2 coolant tanks (1 for turbo and 1 for radiator). The car overheats a lot…very poorly designed, there is a coolant pipe that connects from the top of the engine to the upper coolant tank that is made of plastic, that will break due to the heat and vibration of the engine. I highly advise if you want longevity and reliability of your moms Stelvio to remove the tuning chip or whatever you have. I am a apprentice at a Alfa workshop and I have seen turbo oil leak, coolant leak, fuel pump not working due to customers putting on ‘race chips’ on their cars and slowly 1 by 1 all are taking them off or selling the cars. Enjoy the car for what it is Alfa is a very special brand but not one to be experimenting on 😅 Cheers

If that means no ICE cars at all and when you consider how much we have to pay to buy cars, you bet my one and only car would be a Giulia Quadrifoglio. I first got into cars around the time she came out and had won praise from everyone who drove it, evening lauding it above M3 and C63. The looks are to die for and it tingles all your emotions every time you interact with it. Great video man, ditto 100% on the fact that consumers are behind the SUV craze, not the manufacturers. Car nerds give them so much grief, but they’re merely responding to demand. If it went the other way, you bet everyone would drive around in something low, sporty and fast.

Honestly every single car Alfa Romeo made before being bought by fiat (up to the 75) is amazing. All of their rear wheel drive models where known for being exceptional in the corners and very hard to oversteer thanks to their 50-50 weight distribution, and the 33 was THE front wheel drive sports car at the time

yes it is an urban legend. In my family we got Italian cars in general for a pretty long time, not only Alfa...
And well I think as long as you do the maintenance as it is told in the manual, nothing should go wrong. Always heard people bashing and questioning about the reliability, then saw them having trouble in their fancy german or (even worse) french counterparts while being absolutely fine

You left out the 164S, a car I owned for nearly 10 years and I still regret selling. Great comfortable car with great looks from every angle and that wonderful V6 that loved to rev to and beyond redline with no issues and that typical Alfa sound! Superb short throws gear box, what not to like? Fortunately the "selling bug" never effected my '88 Spider, a wonderful little car, as I affectionately call, that turned out to be the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. I have no concerns about taking it for long trips and it's a blast to drive.
The Giulia and Stelvio? The front is Alfa, no questions, but the rest have generic looks like a lot of vehicles on the road these days whereas in the past an Alfa was unmistakably ALFA no matter from which angle looked at.

What I can say that Lancia and Alfa Romeo cannot be compared to any other car brand. It's true, we sat back and overlooked the details, the solidity and durability of a car during the oil crisis of the 1970s and in the years that followed. Reasons of sustainability, unemployment and continuous economic crises have led to a negative change of pace for these two historic brands. But we Italians, it's true that we sit down, but it's equally true that we get up (as is happening now), and when we do it, there's nothing for anyone, absolutely no one! And it's not even a question of money, it's a brain fact that either you have it, or you can't buy it.

Had a 1980 2.0 Alfetta sedan for 6 years here in Australia. Only time it let me down was when a spark plug failed the DAY AFTER it had been changed in a service. The thermostat in its aftermarket AirCon failed as well. Not an Alfa part though. Other than that it was 6 years of very happy and enjoyable motoring. Bought it for $11,000 second hand in 1992. Sold it for $10,000 in 1998. I probably spent $3000 on it having it resprayed after a minor accident to hot rod perfection and had fitted Koni adjustable shockers and nice alloys. One of the cheapest cars I have every owned.
