    I have a Colnago with Campagnolo Record 10 speed from 2001. I had to go to the workshop once in these 20 years. The indexing in the right shifter lever gradually disappeared. A little spring was replaced. Going out on this 20 year old bike now for a 200 km ride! I must say that electronic shifting and disc brakes is a great improvement though, as long as it works. But my new bike with di2 the battery drains on 3 days, and the workshop have had it for 3 weeks. No big issue with a old spare bike with campy!

    Rediscovering the simple joy of riding again - no demanding training schedule, no traveling, just cycling. I have also discovered that my old bicycles’ geometry doesn’t exactly suit my older body. Consequently I am shopping for a new bike and this Super Record EPS set is terrific. It’s overkill for me now, but it’s gorgeous. It won’t make me faster, but I don’t race anyway . . .

    I have 4 bikes with Campagnolo: Two have 10 speed Record, the other two with 11 Speed Super Record. All mechanical with one being the 11 Speed HO, the first release of the Hydro brakes. Not a single issue with any of the four. Never tried EPS, Shimano or SRAM's electronic sets on the road, but have tested the shifting of all three at the LBS. I like the way Campagnolo EPS shift buttons feel. The button presses feel more defined or positive in my opinion and the derailleurs are quieter in operation when compared to Shimano and SRAM. All three manufactures make great sets though. I would really like to see FSA continue to develop their groupset.

      A bit like saying a McLaren or a Ferrari costs more than my house!
      Of course- it’s a flagship product as used by Pogacar to win the Tour de France! Campagnolo offer more affordable groupsets as well which are excellent - I’ve been using various Campag groupsets and wheels for over 20 years. It works out very cost effective over time because the stuff is super durable- even chains and cassettes last ages. I used to use Shimano but will never go back.

    Campagnolo all day! I still have my complete 1989 C record group set. Apart from basic maintenance has never given me an issue. The only crappy Campagnolo groupset I've ridden was the old Triomphe. Chorus, Athena, Daytona, Veloce, Victory all excellent.

    In my pro racing days in the 1980's I rode the finest crafted custom made steel frames equipped with Campagnolo Super Record. Wondering why today riding 10,000 miles a year I am happy on $400.00 dollar bike (yes you read that correctly 400). I am an expert mechanic after over 50 years of riding/servicing my own bikes...and have tested bike parts in the extremes of terrain and roads. I have found since I don't do sprint training anymore I don't need expensive bikes or parts. I now equip my bikes with Shimano cranks like Alivio or Suntour XCT, and Tektro brakes like Novella, Vuelta wheels, Schwabe tires, Alivio shifting, flat bars with aero bars and bar ends, Richey seatpost/stem/bars, WTB saddle. This $400 bike is as strong and just as dependable as my old race bikes... and with an aluminum frame the bottom bracket flex that steel bikes never overcame is gone. all for $400 (plus aftermarket wheels ($150) , XPDpedals ($50), tires ($120pair) , bar ends/aerobars ($80).

    • @lechprotean
      @lechprotean 3 роки тому +2

      @Chris Tate dunno, maybe that's due to how my 105 cables are routed in the frame, but I'm having to constantly adjust the tension to get precise shifting on a mechanical. For me electronic shifting is superior as it offers the same, reliable shift no matter how hard you press the lever...

    • @simonwarmer8777
      @simonwarmer8777 3 роки тому +1

      If you’ve to adjust all the time, then there is something wrong. A well adjusted mechanical group set with fresh in and outer cables should be snappy as hell and need maybe only once or twice finetuning after installing.

    I know this strand is a year old but I´ll try anway. I had a Parlee Z1 custom build in 2008 with a Campagnolo Titanium Record 10 speed which had just been released. I was running a compact with 11x25 cassette and can say that its performance over a 12 year period was utterly superlative. The feel and capability it gave arguably the world´s best and most expensive frames of the day was a perfect marriage. I raced the bike, did regular club meets, sportifs and training camps using a flight case, toured and trained 10´s of 000´s of miles with minimal maintenance in absolute confidence that gear changes would be instant, silky smooth and 100% reliable even under load and in attacking anger. A sheer joy. Having moved from London to Spain I eventually decided to 'upgrade' to the Super Record 12 mainly as I didn´t deem the workshops in Spain capable of rebuilding the slanting rear derailleur. The new Super Record is a thing of beauty to behold but just doesn´t come anywhere close to the 10. It misfires is crunchy, pingy, needs fettling and is definitely not to be relied upon for assured safe changes each and every time a safe sharp acceleration in a demanding manoeuvre is dialled. I have made my mind up after 3 years, easing off and accepting its limitations. I wanted to clarify whether the groupset you tested here did indeed comprise a titanium 12 cog cassette? If so 'haleluya' as the 11x32 I have is aluminium and steel with some ineffective fancy coating. It does not have the assured silky smooth feel of the titanium 10. I'd love to revert vintage some day as stupidly I sold the entire groupset on eBay. Your EPS (V3 or V4?) report was very encouraging as the original EPS version was variously reported as agricultural to too slow on demand. Also that the 12 was optimised for EPS explaining the possible inferiority of the mechanical version I have. I hope at some point to buy the EPS 12 V4 and fit it to a custom Moots titanium frame wanting to get back into the stratosphere as a committed Campag aficionado. Thanks for reading.. keep up the good work!

    Smooth and fast shifting is essential. If this was the only product that offered that type of performance, then I’d say it’s a must have. However, other group sets offer excellent performance as well. But if I was a super fan and I felt I must have the “barbecue “ setup, I’d get it somehow.
    Since I don’t race because I’m slower than most children on their bikes, it would be nothing but a conversion set up for me. It would be pure bling..

    I think for appearance, it’s hard to just say a groupset is pretty or not, it’s more so how suiting it is for the bike. A modern futuristic looking Trek Madone probably looks better with Sram which is very industrial and futuristic, whereas Italian bike Bianchi will look way better with Super Record since its Italian and more arty.

Have record on my top line carbon bike and veloce on my winter bike - its is the best for me, and geared around true road bike use in how it shift, there is no beating the multiple shift up and down. Love it. Great video David. However, what does miff me is the OEM's ditch and switch to shimano - are riders getting the best option. No.

      Its because its to fragile and sticks out to far for use in A super big and tight peloton Todaj the Kid Champion At UAE has A teammate who's a super Great Ryder in his own a right I just forgot his name . Among others Broke A rear Mech( D-rail)the Day he got beat Bad by Vingago. Alot of pros have Been Mad about how easy it is to break. Funny , Campa has addressed it , but not in time for the new contract, I guess.
      I'm talking out of the side of my neck here but im pretty sure that's why. Todaj needs his lead out guys to pull him a waze more to get the tour won again. Ernesto is Savvy to that and equates TDF wins to big bike sales. 80% sure I'm right about this. Please comment if you know more.

    I greatly prefer the Campagnolo shifters, not only the separation between index finger and thumb, but also the ability to instantly switch several gears up. It is great when coming out of slow corners. I'm not sure how fast and intuitive the EPS can do this as I've never tried that. But I imagine holding down the button is not as fast and deliberately switching 2, 3, 4 or 5 gears in one go is harder as you only have timing to determine that while the mechanical feedback on my thumb was really precise (you feel how many clicks you went).
    I have started out cycling 20 years ago with a Campa Veloce 8 speed, then upgraded to a Campa Veloce 10 speed. Currently I'm riding a Chorus 11 speed but I'm looking to upgrade to a more modern bike since aero, wheel and tire technology has made so much progress in recent years.
    And since I'm older now and disposable money is more available than in my earlier years, the Super Record will be on my next bike. I'm just not sure if it's going to be mechanical or EPS.
    I have tried a Dura Ace Di2 on Mallorca last year and I don't really see the appeal of electronic shifting - it isn't faster, more precise or more reliable. It isn't bad, but do I want to have another battery to wory about?

    Campy should offer a crash replacement scheme for SR: first two years 70 % off a replacement part; years 3-10, 50 percent off retail price for replacement part for crashed damaged items. Professional competitive use excluded. It would make the exorbitant price more tolerable, without substantially cutting into profits. This is really a luxury bike enthusiast product.

      @@Qwerty-fy6fx Funny you mention that. My most often used bike is a heavy duty old steel fixed gear 'cross bike. This is what I use for local mtb trails and commuting. I'll even do fixed centuries a couple time a year. Its more fun than should be legal. Its ultra reliable and almost unbreakable. Ive been trying! I'm a retired aerospace machinist. Ive helped build carbon stuff that flies in space. I now wrench part time in a high end bike shop for fun and laughs. I can afford just about any new bike I'd want. I can get them near cost. I don't buy any new tech, carbon JUNK, electronics, infernal routing or road discs. That junk is merely job security for those like me. I know exactly how truly high end stuff should be manufactured and inspected. Production Bicycles are not inspected very well or at all! Quality control is either a joke or mere lip service in the bicycle industry. Nobody is fooling me! I know this from experience. I've also worked as a mechanical inspector for several years. I helped build some of the highest quality machinery on this earth.
      Ive got several really nice custom hand built bikes (mostly brazed steel) with derailleurs, even some disc brakes, some suspension, yada, yada..... These are used for long epics, big mountains and long distance touring, but my simple fixed gear is what I choose to ride most often. lt makes ME hurt and work harder. Its wicked and relentless training and builds real useful riding skills. I used to train this way as a road racer in the '80s, so this is no passing fad for me.
      Singlespeeds,
      (but especially fixed) force one to deal with their human weaknesses. A bicycle is a very simple machine, or it ought to be! It goes nowhere without the rider motivating it. Its the rider, not the bike!

    I raced pro in the 1980's and my custom steel bike used Super Record because it was the best bearings in the world, and I did not trust the crank arm strength of any other manufacturer. When I placed the bike on a rack the wheel would oscillate back and forth for about 15 minutes before stopping, I did not have to worry about bearing drag. And with downtube shifters I could shift just as well as the 2021 Super Record. Yes, just a simple cable without housing from lever to derailleur, and I could shift as many gears on the (freewheel then) as I wanted faster than todays 2021 Super Record. And I could do the rear shifting as well as front at the same time with one hand....it was called SHIFTING SKILL!! We removed all skill level and what was left was a mess of complexity and expense. My 1980's Campagnolo Super Record shifters were just two aluminum levers connected to a cable and it was BETTER than today's shifters of any brand...because of skill.

      Hamilton has been blessed with driving in the superior machine his whole career. Not to get off topic there.

    As a number of people posted already , their systems are very durable , reliable , rebuildable as well as STUNNINGLY looking and functional ‼😎
    The shifting action provides a more tactile, solid and direct feel
    Ergonomically, the shape and SHORTER length of shifter hoods , allow more infinite adjustments , especially with hydraulic brakes set up compared to the 2 " S " brands
    The shorter hood length allows me to use a slightly longer stem , without affecting my reach

    I appreciate this video, but you don't really say why EPS is superior, apart from quicker gear shifts and prestige and a feeling. I've ridden both EPS and the new Red AXS etap, and I agree EPS is better, and the main reason is the deraileur motors feel stronger and smoother, and that is the main thing I look for in a group. Finally, the question is not if it is worth it to spend the extra money to buy EPS, but if it is worth not spending the money -- a few, six or seven, hundred dollars -- when you will be riding the group for 6, 7, 8 or even more years. Is saving a few hundred dollars worth it when you are on this bike day after day and you want the best ride and it is what you really love to do?

    I'm new to modern bikes. Been riding in 1978 which bikes then were so much different than today. Just wondering though, this Italian bicycle Bianchi is priced at mid range Ducati like Monster, with the latter has tons of components more and could go about ten times faster. Well, as an old man who rode on bikes with gears that stick out on the handle bar and sometimes needed to spin the pedals backward a couple of cycles before the gear changed into place, I think bikes these days are much overpriced.
