All my rifles have scope rings I can look through and still use the open sights. It sets the scope up a little higher . I don't know what they are called exactly but to me if by chance you trip or slip and fall and question if your scope is still good or got knocked around rather than the hunt being over you can still use the open sights till you can sight it in. Or a buck of a lifetime is running by and dont have time to find it in the scope the open sights are there.
I use a similar setup on my 7600. I went with the Leupold quick release base (part # 50067 ) and the Leupold quick release rings ( part # 49974) . I use a leupold vx-3 1.5-5 x 20mm scope. The quick release rings allow me to take the scope off and use the factory open rifle sights. I very rarely ever take the scope off, but if i need to it detaches in a second. The scope always returns to zero. I would rather find an older Leupold without the new custom dial system that they are putting on scopes now. I like simple, less things to go wrong. Plus, I like the classic duplex reticle. As always your videos are very educational and informative.
I'm with you! I have no need for the custom dial system...not really sure why someone would want it on a low power, compact scope🤷♂️. I like the adjustments on my old one. Keep it simple!
I live near what was once Remington in Illion Ny and hunt the Adirondacks. It's truly a shame that they no longer make the 7600 or 7400 rifles. Everyone in our hunting party uses one or the other. Great video we look forward to many more and a great hunting season ahead.

I love irons, but frankly gave up on em as my go-to when I couldn’t find my sights, despite being fiber optics, at first shooting light and missed an opportunity. These days, I run a Leupold 2.5x fixed power, got it just before they were discontinued. Just enough magnification for the farthest I’m likely to shoot, but not too much to where I can’t get a running shot at 30 yards, plus it’s light, tough, and great brightness.
I have one of those 2.5X on a Winchester 94. A wonderfully light and well balanced rig, and I feel the fixed 2.5 compliments the 30-30's capabilities nicely. Great scope.
Hi are those Remington 760. Thats what my Dad carried. My brother has it now. Dads rifle was made in the 50,s. I still carry my winchester 94 3030. I have the same leupold as you. I keep on lowest power. . They made fine rifles in the old days. I still wear my grandfather's woolrich red and black wool coat. And carry his hunting knife. I inherited these things when papap died. I was 8 years old. I dont get cold hunting. Im so old fashioned .i was born 100 years to late.God bless. I hope to hunt november at our Maine cabin.😊😊
Having a quick detach is a great option. I love the peep for a lightweight option but a low powered scope is also very useable in the thick woods. Never seen that scope leveling kit before, always used the wheeler basic kit which has worked for what I’ve needed and costs like $25. Glad to see your using a torq wrench , helps everything be consistent. Good luck this year look forward to see your progress.
I was always so nervous they wouldn't hold zero. This one is designed nicely! Yeah, not a huge fan of that scope mounting kit...I'm a minimalists and hate messing with a bunch of gadgets😁. Thanks for watching!

Good video Paul. I’m glad to know that your setup would repeat your zero. I have the old see thru mounts on my model 70 .30-06. They are just ok. Your mount looks a lot more streamlined. One year I bought a scope just before season. That year , I got the biggest buck of my life. Every year since , I think I need to buy something new for hunting season. Lol. Maybe you’ll have good luck too.
Cool system. Bad weather gives me an excuse to use my old Lee Enfield .303, which has an industrial grade peep sight. On a good day I can shoot just as tight of groups with that rifle as with my scoped ones at 100 yards... only problem is that bush shooting is often as much about trying not to hit sticks as it is about trying to hit the deer, and a scope is inarguably superiour for "threading the needle" as the yardage increases.
Great video Paul I also hunt with 7600 in 35 whelen but I do put a small drop of blue loctite when mounting my scopes looking forward to the moose hunt video good luck
I love open sights and that's the only way I hunt. I used to think I needed a scope with backup irons. Why not just use iron's for hunting is what I've come to reason and I really enjoy harvesting in a way that honors traditional skills.

Nice video Paul. Missed Mr Mark Great set up. Fyi, In my opinion those lead sleds are HARD on your gun and optics The energy needs to go somewhere. Not be locked in. They are nice to avoid recoil, but not at the price of potential damage. Just my thoughts
Thanks! No, you're right about lead sleds. I totally agree. I don't like them and only shoot a few shots off the bench when I am zeroing a rifle. I guess for me, I want to eliminate any human element when zeroing. I don't know if it's the science/lab rat in me or what...I just want the best QA possible with no human error . Then I go to shooting offhand...I have no use for bench shooting outside of that. I figure the sleds not locked down, minimal weight, gun is not strapped down and considering a 30-06 isn't that much recoil...But I definitely think there could be some hazards there, especially when you start getting into the larger calibers. I got the same scope mounting kit from Real Avid. I like it a lot. Shame they don't make it for more models. I'd definitely look into it for some of my rifles. That's pretty cool.

Looks like a great Christmas list 😊 I'm working on a very similar project.. I'll have to check out the Whitetail mount! My plan is quick release rings and bases from Leupold.. along with a low power variable scope. I'm currently running a Skinner Bear Buster front sight.. with a Williams peep ahead of the action mounted on the barrel.

Many years ago I had a scope mount that had pass through to see iron sights which I liked to use both(was on a .22 pump I used squirrel hunting)and have been looking for that now style for several years since I bought a Ruger M77 .44mag and have had no luck this might be the answer. I did send them a question on if it would fit my gun and if it does I will be getting that mount as well. Thanks for this review.
Where i hunt in Maine you would be hard pressed to have to shoot 100 yards. There are good number of deer. Hard part is seeing them. Thick is underststement
I think you might be referring to what is also known as see-thru scope mounts. The whitetail mount is a little different. They are pretty neat...you should check them out!😁

I would be scared of it. I remember back in the day they had one on a hinge and it folded over and it was supposed to be somewhat good. I never tried one but who knows
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast I think the tolerances on the set I got are too tight. I needed pliers to initially spin the levers remove the mount from the base in order to install them. With them installed, I can only spin the levers to from 3:00 to 12:00 and can’t go any further without assistance of pliers or the like. Something definitely doesn’t seem right. The posts don’t go in and out of the holes nicely either because of the slight misalignment I think of the slot drilled into the lever rod. Contacted Torre and they offered to take them back and “adjust” them and cover shipping costs so we’ll see what that yields.

I've shot the Williams, never used a Skinner but I did have a Jungle Carbine which has a huge "Ghost Ring" type peep. Preffered the Williams myself, since you have the option of using the appature or removing it as desired.
I liked the Williams (especially the price😉...I think it was under 40$). I liked the idea of the flexibility being able to go from peep to scope back to peep with the whitetail mount. The skinner sites are pretty popular😁

A good vice and a couple pieces of 3/8 plywood. Clamp the barrel right down! I’m going to go full know it all on ya, throw that lead sled in the trash. POI shift and better groups with butt in the shoulder
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiastI’ve changed many of my iron sighted rifles to blades for the ability to file down the front sight just to keep from adjusting the rear peep too far one way or the other. The small gold bead though picks up nicely on target for my eyes
That's a good idea! The only problem for me is I don't really hunt in areas that would ever require me utilize that function. It's typically (with the exception to last season😂) 50 yards or closer.

Not to mention it’s a real pain when sighting in, like you said. There’s not an easy way to click the turret once you take the cap off.

It is very warming to see the peep and low power scope back and forth is something many of us struggle with lol

I got a model 76 game master pump from the 50s that the best gun in my apinion just a well made gun of its time

Outta curiousity, is the premise the same as the old school see thru scope mounts, or does the scope have to be removed from the rifle to use the peep sights? Thanks for the video.

Can you really shoot that peep with the Monte Carlo stock? I had no ability to do so on my 7600.
Yes, the front post is fairly high. I actually had to adjust the peep up a fair amount.

@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiastI’ve changed many of my iron sighted rifles to blades for the ability to file down the front sight just to keep from adjusting the rear peep too far one way or the other.
The small gold bead though picks up nicely on target for my eyes

You get a custom dial for it. Just send them the info they need. Then it's turn to a number.
That's a good idea! The only problem for me is I don't really hunt in areas that would ever require me utilize that function. It's typically (with the exception to last season😂) 50 yards or closer.

@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiastthat’s true, the dial is a cool feature but would be nice if they made a scope without that feature especially in the low power scopes maybe to save some cost. As you said in New England the dial is not really ever needed for quick close shots
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiastYes, I wish they sent an ordinary turret cap along with the scope for those who don’t want to have the extra height and a button sticking out of the turret. Not to mention it’s a real pain when sighting in, like you said. There’s not an easy way to click the turret once you take the cap off.

I am impressed. The main thing is check it often during season as they get bumped and banged around. Let us know if it holds for the whole season.
