    Fun fact. The 17hmr was originally developed by a rifle maker in Broken Hill Australia who would buy 22 mag rounds and pull them apart to neck down to 17. He contacted various cartridge makers trying to purchase 22 mag brass but they would not sell to him. After a while of testing he went to a few cartridge manufacturers to try and develop his new cartridge but none would offer any support. Lo and behold shortly after the 17 HMR was released by one of the company's. No recognition given.

    I’m glad you mentioned the 5mm Remington at the end. I have one that was a wall hanger and dust collector for years until Aquila started making ammo again . The ammo isn’t cheap but I’ve been stocking up little by little in case it becomes unavailable again. I take the money out of my budget for my other bad habits. The only ones unhappy to see 5mm available again are the starlings that hang around my farm buildings.

      I came across a Remington 591m, still in the box! A Remington collector had passed away, the family was selling everything! They said it was worthless because of ammo availability, I bought it for 50.00 and the dust continued, I happened to be at a old gun shop going out of business, they had pretty much sold out of everything except for a 100 boxes of 32 grain hollow points, I got em all for five dollars a box! Those days are long gone, but I still have plenty of ammo, and love nor money can buy my 5mm!

    About the 22WMR and the accuracy of the same. I have an Anshutz 1518 Mannlicher with the double set triggers. When I bought it in Germany, it was a pleasure to shoot, and very accurate. When I got it back to the World, I enjoyed shooting it with a Weaver B4 scope, seeing three-quarter inch, five shot groups. Then, I ran out of RWS ammo, and could not find any more. Tried Winchester (the inventer, remember?) Instant 3 inch, 3 shot groups. I put the gun away for almost 20 years. When CCI came out with the MaxiMag+V, it was magical. Now I have RWS and CCI. Moral: Ammunition choice is critical to be able to maximize accuracy. The WMR can be very accurate.

      @@jaydunbar7538 I shoot AR450 and AR500 with my .17. It’s actually brutal on mild steel, even ballistic tip stuff. Btw ball does more damage on small targets and ballistic tip stuff well placed can take out bigger animals but placement is extremely important because I quartered a coyote and it tossed it’s guts out and broke it’s back. Absolutely terrible, and now I won’t use it for these animals again because it’s not reliably human in my hands for animals that size. .22-250 however gives me the option for quartering bigger animals like this.

    Good information as always Ron. Love your videos. Here in Sweden the ammo prices on the 17 hmr is ridiculous. Around 30 dollars for a box of 50 rounds. I think the prices for 6.5x55 is nearly the same. The 22lr is my choise but the 17 hmr is pretty popular on Grouse up in the mountains because the long distance an flatter trajectory. 22 wmr seams to be quite dead due to problems with finding the right ammo that will shoot good and tight at 80 yards and beyond, and ammo prices are little bit cheaper then 17hmr but not much.

      @simonscott4716 3 роки тому

      Grouse is what I use 17HMR for here in Canada. They dont fly much, mostly freeze and rely on camouflage. 20-30 yards all you need is a consistently accurate rifle that can hit a 1/2" target (head shot). It is expensive yes. I can tolerate the price for hunting, I wouldnt spend too much time target shooting with that. That's where the 22LR is king

    Being honest in all of my experiences the 22 lr an the 22 mag always perform the best at taking game. They may not have the speed and accuracy. But critters don't make it back into the hole and get lost.
    Sametime I am aeat hunter those 17s blow up to much meat on squirrels and rabbits. Plus they don't take groundhogs bobcats fox coyotes beavers without 2 shots. Then the pelts are ruined. The meat is also ruined enough we can't feed my friends bear dogs or his pet bear. Cuz we don't want them to get copper or lead cutting them inside. The 22s are an all around safer bet for how and what we do. Same time I'm sad to see you didn't say anything about the 5mm rim fire. Not comment here in the states but I own 4 of them and it's honestly a fun gun to shoot when I find ammo. It gives me that happy medium between a 22 long and a 22lr for how I've played with it.

    Should make a video of the smaller centerfires, 22 hornet, 221 fireball, 218 bee..
    For comparison, the 22 hornet has the same energy/velocity at 100 yards as the 22 wmr at muzzle.
    I'm a bit in love with the ugly ducking wich is the hornet, small caliber, works up to 150-200 yards depending on load and cheap (when reloading) as there is 9-13 grain powder depending on powder type.
