That light switch Keith was talking about when deer disappear during the rut basically happened early in southern Maine this year. I haven’t seen a deer for almost 3 weeks until a few days ago and I feed them in my back field throughout the year. I finally saw a heard of does and fawns. I need to get out in the woods this year but Im alone and have little time lately. The coyotes are getting out of control here we have a pack of 8 plus that come to my property. 😊 Time to have a few night hunts
Fantastic podcast fellas. Watch this just enhances the season for me, harvested a 8 point yesterday morning. Vacation next week, will be selective if I am fortunate to see another, but now it’s just about soaking up the remaining season. Best of luck Mark
One of the first things I ever read in Outdoor Life back in the 1960's is still true today. "Deer Are Edge Animals". Deer follow the edges of cuts and different plantings of spruce and beech. Find the edges and you will often find fresh deer sign.
So this year I dedicated my hunting season to helping a friend of mine get his 200 lb buck and we have had a couple of nice ones but I swear it's like when it's time to go he freezes but he'll get it together and get the job done on a brighter note both my sons got their deal this year on Youth Day
Guys here in North Carolina I never even wait five minutes to go look for a deer ,,even in bow season,,,too many things go wrong over the course of time ,,and I’ve seen them all ,,stolen deer ,,coyotes eating it ,,dogs eating it ,,start pouring rain or snow ,,blood dries and it is almost impossible to see.
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast the biggest trouble here is everyone is hunting their four acres ,,and you can’t get off of it ,, and so many deer that when I walk out the back door ,,they go everywhere,,,as soon as I get still and in blind ,,in three minutes they walk back out ,,it is so very different hunting here lol. My first forty or so bucks harvested with a bow back in the seventies taught me to never wait to track a deer ,,and believe me ,,I know that I am waisting my breath with the younger hunters ,so I just usually keep my mouth shut.
Road shy is likely learned. Probably only takes a few times for them to figure out that every time they get chased its always after crossing a road. They probably listening to people getting out of thier trucks then awhile later here they come. 😊
I have 120 acres of fields to mow with a 15 foot batwind mower, every time I start it up and get mowing one single coyote will show up and begin consuming mice I've seen him take 15 on one small field and that is just the ones I saw him eating.
The rut for Minnesota is Halloween weekend. 🎃 no matter if it’s cold or not 😊 . It’s no different than the trees going into fall cycle. The deer will always follow the same pattern, no matter what. 😊 full moon half moon throw that in the garbage. It’s like a person had told me one time is daylight savings. I highly doubt the deer know that it’s daylight savings 😂 laugh my ass off.
I agree! Length of the photoperiod influences so much in nature. One of Maine's most renowned deer biologist, Gerry Lavigne, has always said peak rut in Maine is November 15th as determined by the length of daylight.
Coyotes are a real big problem down in the Dover-Foxcroft area also. The first Monday of hunting season I walked up a trail and walked back on the same trail and there were coyote tracks in my foot prints. Maine needs to put bounties on Coyotes again. Maybe then more people will be more interested in hunting them. I've coyote hunted for the last 15 yrs day/night hunt but I'm only 1 person. I know there are more people that hint them but there needs to be more. That will drastically help the deer herd and especially the partridge.
Excellent podcast guys, subscribed and looking forward to many more. Warm fall so far but next week the woods should come alive.

They are crafty creatures! I guess that's why we call them the "elusive" whitetail! Merry Christmas!
Somewhere on the ridge is a deer trying to answer a flip phone 🦌 555-LOGS

No kidding! Sounds like you need to take care of some coyotes😉
