Having a team of 9 writers come up with a I-IV-vi-V progression would be like having a team of chefs come up with a PBJ sandwich.

Here before Bieber summoned Beato to delete the video.

"The Toto song wasn't played to a click..." it was played to a Porcaro. Huge improvement over a click. Just my opinion.

"Justin Bieber’s writing team accidentally copied Toto’s song" LOL

They’re not looking to come up with “cool and creative” .. they’re looking to come up with the next radio song and just follow the formula that’s been working

I'm going to venture to say Bieber had no clue what was going on but the producers knew exactly what they were doing.

I'm not a musician. But I find your breakdown of the songs and the value of them and how they're composed and the relativism to other songs to be absolutely fascinating.

Thats why Prince is so amazing, he stood for is rights as a musician. In the mid nighties he won a trial against his record company and got all his rights of his music back. It would be cool if you did a video about Prince ✌🏼

Dropping a Radiohead song reference in a Justin Bieber song analysis in a non-snob way: achievement unlocked. Never change Rick!

As a teenager in the late '90s, I was thinking I was riding a song on the keys and my dad comes into the room and he's like "I didn't know you listen to 'Yes'!" He thought I was learning 'Your Move' because I was playing the exact same thing. I heard it around my dad at some point.

Different world today, no one can compete with the classic rock era !

Lazy composers biting old songs, hoping no one important notices. BUSTED

Haha you are too diplomatic Rick. They’ve ripped it off thinking no one of their generation will know (or care). I find it perplexing that you can’t reproduce a small portion of another artist’s song on UA-cam without being blocked, yet Bieber rips off a whole tune and it hits top 10....

I have a feeling the guys from Toto will be added to the song credits of the Bieber track very soon

I like the way you show understanding for the process of "accidentally copying", but also give valuable hints how to avoid that or how to be a better songwriter eventually. Great job!

There's no worse feeling that coming up with a songwriting idea that sounds fantastic, and feeling really proud of yourself, only for a friend to point out that it sounds exactly like that Peter Frampton song that was used in the background of a TV show you were watching three days earlier.

I saw an interview with Paich and Lukather where Paich compliments Luke on his songwriting ability. "You write great songs," he said, paraphrasing. Luke turned to him and said, "No, YOU write great songs." Paich responded, "No, I make great records. You write great songs." That stayed with me because I never really had thought of the distinction between a great record (something that will sell and be played on the radio) vs. a great song (which may or may not do the same). I think the songwriting "committees" are not trying to write great songs. They're trying to make great records. Commercialism vs. art and creativity.

" Beyonce had a HUGE album. Five producers. Nine writers & seven words." - Joe Walsh ( Daryl's House a few years ago lol )
