They will never get in, as Lukather had a dust-up with Jann Wenner from Rolling Stone many years ago. Totally disgraceful to allow that to be an issue so many years later!
As long as I can remember, Toto was called "faceless studio musicians" by the critics of Rolling Stone... I also remember an interview that the band did back in the 80's where drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) basically stated that critics didn't know anything and every bad review that critics gave them in the press he used it to line a bird cage with it...so yeah I would love them to get into the RRHOF, but I don't plan to hold my breath waiting for it to happen.
My dad used to say, "Son, there's no substitute for talent." These guys are just incredible musicians so the critics can say what they want. These guys were destined for greatness. Love, love, love TOTO
I absolutely LOVE Toto. My teen years were in the 90s listening to hip-hop and R&B mostly, but have loved all music genres. And even though I was only like 5, I remember hearing Africa for the first time in the 80s. That song entrances me. I'm black and ai didn't give a damn it was a white band. I just always thought they were Afrikaaner or something. I'm learning they're American with this story but I don't care. I just love the music. And when Weezer remade it, I was delighted. It's the pace of the song that still draws me in. I can't do anything else when that song is on. I know a lot of their catalog and the music makes me feel like I'm in another place. And a lot of their songs have been sampled for hip-hop, too. And I'm not surprised they've worked with the artists listed in this story because they are all too my favorite artists.
Not only is Joseph Williams the son of John Williams (as mentioned by many others), David Paich is the son of conductor/arranger/composer/producer/pianist Marty Paich, and the Porcaro brothers are the sons of the great percussionist Joe Porcaro. The musical talent of this band is kind of in the blood.
I was in the music business in LA for over 20 years. I can tell you without a doubt all the members of Toto are highly regarded and respected. Most of you would be shocked how many songs they have written and produced for other bands. Plus as studio musicians the Porcaro Brothers are legendary. They were never fond of touring. It's very common for successful bands to splinter into parts and money is always an issue.
I guess I’m one of the few that isn’t surprised by their lengthy credit list cuz I grew up always studying the liner notes of cassettes and cd’s. I kept noticing Lukather, Paich, Jeff and Steve Porcaro’s names showing up on other popular artists albums and thinking “Man, these guys must really be good & also in high demand”. Turns out that they were. Big time!
I'm 48, a Gen X'er who grew up listening to this incredible band. I just want to say, " Thank you" to the past and present members of Toto. Your music has meant so much me. It is the tapestry that decorates the soundtrack of my childhood. I sang "Africa" to my own children when they were babies, and now they are Toto fans too. ❤
Mine too! I was legal (18)to go to clubs and was able to teach my classmates the latest dance moves thanks to Toto. Great, great memories! From a former Buenos Aires resident.
My entire high school and college years soundtracks has many artists and groups. TOTO was near the top from their hits they made and with other artists to a the soundtracks of Dune(1984 version) they're and still is the best. By the way Rosanna Arquette was not only the inspiration for the song" Rosanna" but also for the Peter Gabriel hit " For Your Eyes" in 1989. Thanks guys....
And there is is, right on top of the section, the unavoidable, ubiquitous, omnipresent UA-cam comment calling a celebrated star "underrated". Don't words mean things anymore?

Concert in Rosemont, Illinois outside Chicago couple months ago: Toto opening for Journey. Was a truly fantastic night! 17,000+ people standing and dancing the entire night. We had a blast. Thank you, gentlemen!
Their tour in 1979 brought them to Milwaukee. I worked for the local concert promoter for a semester and had a wonderful time prepping the green room, for the snacks and drinks, etc. I asked David Paich to dedicate a song to me, never thinking he would. He did. He told me it gave him something to think about while on stage...I loved it!
In the late summer of 1971, my wife and I noticed a very young-looking drummer on the set of "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" on TV. We became fans of the show and bought tickets for the duo's concert appearance on March 19, 1972 at Fort Wayne, Indiana's Memorial Coliseum. That Sunday afternoon in a packed arena we learned that the young drummer from the TV show was 17 year-old Jeff Porcaro. Fast-forward two years and we're attending our first Steely Dan concert at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974, when who do we see tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder but a just-turned 20 Jeff Porcaro. He was so good on that tour that he became the session drummer on their 1975 album "Katy Lied," and later that year on Boz Scagg's Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" -- and all of this before the age of 22. By the way, that's the Porcaro brothers' dad, Joe, playing the marimba on their 1982 #1 hit "Africa."
@andyinoregon you lucky dog, to have seen these performances. I wasn't born until the end of 1972, but love Steely Dan so much. I finally got to see them a couple of years ago, but without Walter Becker, as he had just passed the year before. Thanks for opening and sharing your time capsule of a story. 😀

Great to see my favorite band getting so much love these days. I was 11 when Toto 4 came out and I’ve been a fan ever since I saw “Africa” and “Rosanna” on MTV. I knew they were a great band but I don’t think I ever would’ve imagined that I’d still be listening to their music and attending their concerts 40 years later. Everyone and their dog seems to cover it. 😀 Just search UA-cam for covers of "Africa". Weezer did it on their album of covers. One of the most-watched covers is by Mike Massé; Toto has even given him their "seal of approval". This song will live forever!
Toto is definitely one of the best rock bands ever. Favorite album: the highly underrated “Kingdom of Desire”, their heaviest album. You don’t know how great rock music can be until you listened to them. Start with their classic “Toto IV”
Fun fact: Toto's "Africa" has come home, so to speak, thanks to an installation by an artist who plans to play the song on loop in a Namibian desert -- for eternity. German-Namibian artist Max Siedentopf has set up the sound installation, called "Toto Forever," in an undisclosed location in the 1,200 mile-long Namib Desert.
I find this plan so arrogant...the desert and its creatures never asked for sound pollution. corrupting nature to suit our whims ..I hope this crashes and burns..hard
When I first download the music app, I first remember TOTO Africa and Lea. They were both my all-time favorite songs since I was 8 years old. Then, I finally had a chance to go around their past albums 2 years ago. The spark never fades inside of me when I listen, forever cherish and thankful for knowing this awesome band.
I love Africa and it is a legendary song, but I never understood how it was dramatically more popular than Rosanna was. I think Rosanna is their best song by a mile. Everything about it is perfection.
I've loved Toto from the first time I ever heard ANY of them! I got to see them at the Texas Winter Garden ballroom in Dallas Texas back in the very early 1980s. The power to the sound system went out and one of them started to juggle to entertain us while they fixed the power issues. They were fabulous!

Everyone and their dog seems to cover it. 😀 Just search UA-cam for covers of "Africa". Weezer did it on their album of covers. One of the most-watched covers is by Mike Massé; Toto has even given him their "seal of approval". This song will live forever!
One of the greatest bands ever! What an amazing group of musicians.
Paich's new song "Spirit of the Moonrise" is OUTSTANDING. New EP due 08/19
A biopic movie about the band should be made
Oooh they forgot 99!???
That’s one of my favorites!!
Tons of talent 🙏❤️😎
Unfortunately the band turned their back to that song years ago. I also love that song.
@@steverogers2603 they did play it for their 35th anniversary concert and it was beautiful!!!!,
@@steverogers2603 Lukather hates it LOL
Wow . Amazing such a story could be done on national Network. An iconic American band
"If it's not a cure... it's a really good remedy"
Trying to make me cry now aren't you? Perfect.
Love Toto!
Steve Lukather, Jeff Poraco played on a handful of Olivia albums. Lets get physical was one of the first solos I could ever play.
Thank you, what a wonderful interview, I hadn't realized Toto was this prolific.
Truly mind boggling talent. Soundtrack of my youth. Will love their music forever.
Toto is definitely one of the best rock bands ever. Favorite album: the highly underrated “Kingdom of Desire”, their heaviest album. You don’t know how great rock music can be until you listened to them. Start with their classic “Toto IV”
I'll be over you is my favorite song♥️
Just beautiful 🥰🥰 I was in highschool when TOTO was singing great and beautiful songs
Those crazy Germans!
I find this plan so arrogant...the desert and its creatures never asked for sound pollution. corrupting nature to suit our whims ..I hope this crashes and burns..hard
Sounds about as awful as TBN's holyland theme park.
great music has no age limit...................it lives FOREVER !!
Love Lea.
I love this band ❤
I love Africa and it is a legendary song, but I never understood how it was dramatically more popular than Rosanna was. I think Rosanna is their best song by a mile. Everything about it is perfection.
I agree it is pop perfection. Africa is a good song but Rosanna was my favorite off that album. My favorite overall though is Hold the line. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
It’s popular BECAUSE it’s kitschy. Hold the Line is my favorite.
beautiful groups in my life. I find
From my childhood to now still love their songs. Thanks Toto!
I am obsessed with Africa (Delayed plans to visit for few years now). I think part of the reason is this wonderful song!
You have taste. May God go with you.
I so still wish Jeff was here! Noone laid down a drumbeat like him!
Saw the Young Toto boys in 1976 backing Boz Scaggs on the Silk Degrees tour!
Omg, who didn’t love this group? Yes, they should be in the music hall of fame!
