That "Petrucci" chord is actually known as the "Alex" chord (Alex Lifeson from Rush) when you play it with F# in the bass. Go check out Cygnus-X1 Book II. The entire intro guitar part uses that chord. John was massively influenced by Rush so I think it makes sense!
John Petrucci in multiple interviews calls it the Lifeson chord. Never heard anyone call it a Petrucci chord before. I’m curious how he would react to hearing someone call it that.

can you imagine all the legendary bands we wouldn't have if you had to be the "best" guitarist, drummer, or singer. Dave goes to show that even if you think you suck its more important to get your music out there instead of thinking that no one will like it.
10 years ago, I started writing poetry after a divorce. Had never written a poem in my life, to date I have now written over 40,000 poems or prose. I converted many of them into songs. Started playing guitar 5 years along with the piano “self taught” which gave me the composition structure that brought them to life.
What you said at 8:30 is so true. Ive been thinking that exact thing for years. Some of the best, most original songs I've written, were during times when I was not trying whatsoever. Shit, the song ive written that I'm the most proud of, I came up with the main part during a damn sound check. "Oh hey, that was pretty cool. Im gonna record that real quick." I'm glad to hear you put that idea into words, its just so hard to "not try". Because at that point, you're trying, to not try. Its one of those things that just happens at random. You can't control it. Just be grateful when it does.
Dave Grohl is so humble and makes everything look so easy that I’m sure it infuriates some classically trained musicians who just aren’t as good at song writing
And it's funny how long this has been going on, even in classical music circles. Brahms, always living under the shadow of Beethoven, wrote a set of Hungarian dances, some of which i'm sure you've heard, and they're not very academic, just really catchy. A lot of his contemporaries were sort of miffed they didn't have that same gift of catchy melodies Brahms did.
@@dixonhill1108 yeah no one said it was easy. And I think we’re saying the same thing. Basically not everyone can write music, no matter what they can do musically
Dave Grohl genius that he is, is really being very humble, because his songs, his melodies and hooks are instantly memorable. I mean can he write a bad song? The most genuine down to earth guy in the business. Thanks man for your music...
Love that tune you've been working on Tyler, sounds really beautiful. Can't wait to hear the full and finished version, you are a very inspiring young man my friend, keep it up. 👍❤️
“Go out there, find the love of your life, and break it off” Or have everyone in the band break up all at the same time, some of which are with other band members, and you’ll write an incredible album. E.g., Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours”
I remember when I got a ripped version of the acoustic everlong. I remember it had Dave and Howard speaking in the beginning...and now is the only way I hear everlong. When you catch pieces of your soul exuding out...it's undeniable
I think part of Dave’s attitude about his playing relates to his dad - a classically trained flautist - who said to him that “playing an instrument doesn’t make you a musician”. Glad Dave persevered and is an awesome musician.
most of the world's greatest songwriters don't know shit but just have this immense natural sense of melody and composition. And Dave was close friends with Kurt, one of the best examples of that
And the guys who know the most stuff usually write shitty songs. I remember seeing one of the big virtuosos live and it was like the musical equivalent to a transformers movie. All explosions and robot karate.
@Eye Hate Everything I agree with you, but I know that I often criticize modern pop and trap music for being overly linear. I don't really know anymore, I guess we can all just like whatever it is we enjoy. Cheers.
When you listen to Dave's interviews he uses the phrase 'one of my favorite bands of all time' for many different groups. I think I'm going to adopt this tactic as well..
I think the reason "Demos" sound so good sometimes, is the fact that they're honest. You're not suffering from record button anxiety. You're simply playing naturally and allowing things to flow naturally. Even if you're noodling around to the click... it just seems to flow better when the record button isn't engaged.
It was striking, but I give a Tyler a pass because he recently posted a video about trying to learn the harp-guitar. I’ve definitely pulled out a new instrument when I didn’t need to, just for the sake of learning and getting used to it. Plus he can demo the bass note of the chords :)
It was clearly a funny gag. I don’t know how anyone could watch more than one of Tyler’s videos and think he’s an egotist with no perspective. He’s trying to teach perspective with every video.
Love the disclaimer at the end Respect that you're putting in the hard work of not only being an amazingly talented and beautiful musician, but also putting in the hours, effort and dedication to keep filming, editing, and uploading these ❤️ Hope you're as proud of yourself as you could be
Dude. You do more for guitar players than milk does for cereal. I rarely comment on anything, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the awesome content you make, like it’s so good it sometimes feels like I’m cheating by not paying for it. 🤘🏻
Tyler I absolutely love that lick that you put together at the end of the video. You definitely have something there as I was humming the tune long after watching this. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to hear it in an official recording!
As a drummer turned guitarist with no formal training, this is 100% absolutely how you write a song. What Dave Grohl does is so primordial, it can not be taught. He has a naturally predilection to creating music. He can let music flow. A master songwtiter also leaves space for harmonies, other instruments, lyrics, interpretation etc...but makes it sound so simple and relatable. I used to work in a pit band in college for the theater. There was a classically trained guitarist in the band and he could not for the life of him figure out how I would play all of the songs by ear and memory. I told him if it sounds right, I will just play it, I trust my ears. I envied his ability to read music and he envied my ability to improv. Two sides of the same coin. Very nice song at the end by the way. Def sounds natural :). Just let it flow. Check me out when you get a chance. Would love to work with you one day Tyler.
he may not know the name of that chord but he has an innate education and understanding of music and the guitar. unfortunately people will watch Dave, want to be like Dave, and refuse to educate themselves about music and their instrument. Dave is a genius and that's why he can do what he does. 99% of us are not, and we must dive deep into our formal learning if we ever want to do something special with music.
Dude. Seriously. LOVE what you're writing in that at the end . . . I know it's been almost a year looking at the date of the video but would love to know where that ended up. I'm hooked. Keep going!
@@jmichaelstudios5495 : I think it's actually about Jennifer Youngblood. In 1996 he was in the process of divorcing her (hence him getting involved with Louise around this time in the first place).
About dreaming of a melody, or a song, Paul McCartney has said in multiple interviews that he dreamed the melody of the song "Yesterday". And then woke up and played it on the piano he had by his bed (since we all have pianos by our bed). Upon meeting with John Lennon the next day, he asked if John had heard that melody somewhere. He had not. And that was the birth of one of the most popular songs in history.
Foo Fighters are my favorite band of all time and Dave Grohl has truly inspired me to pick up guitar and write songs. This proves that even though you are not a trained musician you can still be a kick ass song writer and one of the best musicians of all time.🤘🏼
When I talk to my students about writing their parts, i remind them that the parts have to stand on their own without all the bells and whistles. If you like it with the clean DI sound or an acoustic guitar sound, you'll like it in the final mix. I know this because once you strip away all the processing and bells and whistles, it was what you liked in the first place. I enjoy your videos. it feels like conversation with a friend.
Your "work in progress" is awesome. VERY Satriani vibe to it. Feels like "Super Colossal"- era stuff. That riff at 12:45 is fire - Got it stuck in my head! Can't wait to hear the finished product...
I picked Sunday because it uses the same stacked 5th sus2 chords. But it's still got plenty of Sonic Youth madness to give a taste of what they're capable of. These other two songs are also good picks though.
Watching this a year after posting, is that song anywhere to listen to? Love Dave Grohl I’m so glad to hear him talk about tracks and creating the same way I feel in my room as a small artists still, thanks for sharing!
I went to highschool with Dave Grohl at Thomas Jefferson in Alexandria va. Dave was always about music even in 9th grade. He is our hometown boy done good.
Dave Grohl is a great guitarist. He's not a shredder at all, but who cares? Most shredders are boring. He knows how to play killer licks, energising rhythm, what else is there? He rocks.
Good drummer, decent guitarist and frontman who knows how to write pop music that sells. Seems like a cool guy too, but probably the most overrated musician in my lifetime.
It’s funny how some of the greatest guitarists of all time are the one who learn or are taught unconventionally. They don’t think like a formally taught guitarist. They think outside the box. They don’t sit and start playing open cowboy chords.
Every disadvantage has its advantages. If you're not classically trained you're not constrained by theory. It's like Victor Wooten said in a video with Tyler about playing the wrong notes makes it sound better when you play the right ones.
Your tune at the end makes me think of someone stranded on an island where it's always nighttime. They've lived there for a while and supposedly made their peace with it, but sometimes they sit and watch the waves crash under the moon, and see faces of people they've left behind in being stranded here, under the beauty of stars and water and nature but devoid of people. Actual interpersonal love. That's what forces them to return to the world. Aboard a raft, they row hard, fighting waves and struggling to reach the horizon, where dawn might await them, and with it, people...
I'd like to quote Mark Knopfler on Dave Grohl's guitar playing. "The man is strictly rhythm, doesn't want to make it cry or sing".* *Disclaimer - I'm not claiming Dave knows all the chords with that quote.

yeah, i totally agree, im a huge fan of the foo fighters and dave grohl is a top notch songwriter 🤟🏽
Dave Grohl is keeping me going as a guitar player. I tried lessons, and I learned a lot of good stuff from an amazing teacher.
But like Dave, I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm slowly seeing my skills improve.
It was definitely discovered and played on many records before either of those things.

“I don’t know how to play guitar” ... dude. You know chord shapes, you can write melody’s, you’re in one of the biggest rock bands to have ever existed. You know how to play guitar stop it lol Dave’s just being modest as hell. Which is admirable but seriously he knows what he’s doing.
He’s one of those people who never had to learn, he just understood guitar from the start
@@aunch3 there’s that funny story that Pat Smear told recently on Howard stern. Him and Kurt walked by Dave noodling on guitar backstage at a show and they both laughed because they realized he was better than both of them which is funny but probably actually true lol
He's been in a FEW of the biggest rock bands of all time. Queens of The Stone Age drums, Nirvana Drums, Foo Fighters vocals/guitar
Dave knows how to play guitar. Does does NOT understand guitar. Big difference
Foo fighters are just average good band, few cool songs, nothing new, sry
can you imagine all the legendary bands we wouldn't have if you had to be the "best" guitarist, drummer, or singer. Dave goes to show that even if you think you suck its more important to get your music out there instead of thinking that no one will like it.
This is very very important
10 years ago, I started writing poetry after a divorce.
Had never written a poem in my life, to date I have now written over 40,000 poems or prose.
I converted many of them into songs.
Started playing guitar 5 years along with the piano “self taught” which gave me the composition structure that brought them to life.
So the former drummer from Nirvana wrote one of the greatest FF songs, Everlong....

This is my first video I’ve seen of yours. I love that you just pulled that wild guitar out like it’s no big deal.
I've always thougtht that Everlong sounded like a Dinosaur jr song. Just imagine J Mascis cranking the distortion to 14 and doing his drone over it.
Your song “ in process” has great feel. The bending notes create a big effect👍
Hey Tyler that composition is truly beautiful...... And yes you are an artist......:)
I enjoyed it very much, great job man
Tim!! Wow what a compliment, coming from the #1 studio artist!! You've totally changed my style, thx for your tips
This right here. I loved the caption at the very end. Tyler sure is an artist. That blew me away.
I can't wait to hear the completed...whatever it's going to be !!!
Just found your channel. Had to subscribe just to find out how that song turns out. Please do a vid like Dave about your own process in completing it.
“Go out there, find the love of your life, and break it off”
Or have everyone in the band break up all at the same time, some of which are with other band members, and you’ll write an incredible album. E.g., Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours”
But That's not true in the case of numb by Linkin Park It was highlight the depression that Chester was struggling with
Moral of the story: If it sounds good, it IS good. Don’t overthink it. 😬👍
I remember when I got a ripped version of the acoustic everlong. I remember it had Dave and Howard speaking in the beginning...and now is the only way I hear everlong. When you catch pieces of your soul exuding out...it's undeniable
Oh, by the way, Petrucci calls that the "Alex Lifeson chord", from Rush.
I think part of Dave’s attitude about his playing relates to his dad - a classically trained flautist - who said to him that “playing an instrument doesn’t make you a musician”. Glad Dave persevered and is an awesome musician.
Your original composition sounds incredible and your stegato and legato sound really nice- proper phrasing indeed!
most of the world's greatest songwriters don't know shit but just have this immense natural sense of melody and composition. And Dave was close friends with Kurt, one of the best examples of that
And the guys who know the most stuff usually write shitty songs. I remember seeing one of the big virtuosos live and it was like the musical equivalent to a transformers movie. All explosions and robot karate.
I guess thats why I like a lot of 90s grunge and alt rock stuff. Almost no technical skill, cohesion, or complexity, but it still sounds great.
@Eye Hate Everything I agree with you, but I know that I often criticize modern pop and trap music for being overly linear. I don't really know anymore, I guess we can all just like whatever it is we enjoy. Cheers.
I kinda think Irving Berlin knew a thing or two about theory.

I think you’re dead on, but I think it’s really the intervals TONE more than anything 😊
Dude, Yeah! Fun to see other fans of that group out here in larger UA-cam land. You dig Arch Echo as well?
When you listen to Dave's interviews he uses the phrase 'one of my favorite bands of all time' for many different groups. I think I'm going to adopt this tactic as well..
I think the reason "Demos" sound so good sometimes, is the fact that they're honest. You're not suffering from record button anxiety. You're simply playing naturally and allowing things to flow naturally. Even if you're noodling around to the click... it just seems to flow better when the record button isn't engaged.
As a fellow guitarist that cant play guitar , i just gotta say , your bit at the end was badass

It was striking, but I give a Tyler a pass because he recently posted a video about trying to learn the harp-guitar. I’ve definitely pulled out a new instrument when I didn’t need to, just for the sake of learning and getting used to it. Plus he can demo the bass note of the chords :)
If you have it, play it!✌️🤪🎸🎶🎵🎶
It was clearly a funny gag. I don’t know how anyone could watch more than one of Tyler’s videos and think he’s an egotist with no perspective. He’s trying to teach perspective with every video.
Haha. I know right. It’s pretty rad though!
Funny the unknown wonder boy … busts out an axe greater than the creator of the classic song! Ok bruh we know you got the gear but not the talent ….

Or the Kurt cobain chord . Lol
Lifeson was an influence on Petrucci :P But I get what you mean
Was aiming for the Jimi Hendrix chord but figured, "whatever, this'll do"
Even Petrucci calls it the Alex Lifeson chord.
Dave Ghrol is such an inspiration for me. He just seems like such a creative, real, and humble musician. He is just amazing
That outro was official bro. Good videos but hats off to your playing. All the hard work paid off
Dude. Seriously. LOVE what you're writing in that at the end . . . I know it's been almost a year looking at the date of the video but would love to know where that ended up. I'm hooked. Keep going!

Imagine being the Senate.
I'm talking to you, Palpatine.
@@jmichaelstudios5495 : I think it's actually about Jennifer Youngblood. In 1996 he was in the process of divorcing her (hence him getting involved with Louise around this time in the first place).
Re: Sonic Youth and THAT Chord - start with Daydream Nation
About dreaming of a melody, or a song, Paul McCartney has said in multiple interviews that he dreamed the melody of the song "Yesterday". And then woke up and played it on the piano he had by his bed (since we all have pianos by our bed).
Upon meeting with John Lennon the next day, he asked if John had heard that melody somewhere. He had not. And that was the birth of one of the most popular songs in history.
Foo Fighters are my favorite band of all time and Dave Grohl has truly inspired me to pick up guitar and write songs. This proves that even though you are not a trained musician you can still be a kick ass song writer and one of the best musicians of all time.🤘🏼
Please record and post your songs! The world needs your expression!

Indeed
If you love Everlong and want a Sonic Youth song with a similar vibe: Sunday
Or "Winner's Blues". Sonic Youth's only acoustic song.
I would have said "schizophrenia"
I picked Sunday because it uses the same stacked 5th sus2 chords. But it's still got plenty of Sonic Youth madness to give a taste of what they're capable of. These other two songs are also good picks though.

Dave Grohl is a great guitarist. He's not a shredder at all, but who cares? Most shredders are boring.
He knows how to play killer licks, energising rhythm, what else is there?
He rocks.
If he's a great guitarist, then that means I'm a great guitarist, so that's cool.
He's a great frontman
@Shaun K yeah, you nailed it... here's a big 🖕
He’s a garage band quality guitarist. You can go to a local bar on a Friday night and hear a better guitarist
Your John Petrucci's chord is called Alex Lifeson's chord according to John Petrucci 😅😅😅
I was thinking the same thing. BLASPHEMY!
Yep, that was the opening chord on Hemispheres.
If Dave Grohl can't play guitar, then I don't know what music is.
I'd like to quote Mark Knopfler on Dave Grohl's guitar playing. "The man is strictly rhythm, doesn't want to make it cry or sing".*
*Disclaimer - I'm not claiming Dave knows all the chords with that quote.
We can safely assume that Dave does not know all the chords... that is George's area.
Let’s find out what that chord is: proceeds to pull out an absolute dragon of a guitar
