I would say they clearly agree with you about it being lifted if they chose to share the writing credits with Dagny, b/c you know they wouldn't cut someone else in on the money unless they felt they really had to. So they knew they weren't going to get away with it and just nipped it in the bud by sharing the writing credit.

I agree. Never Really Over feels over-produced and generic, though it may have more technical flourishes. Love You Like That is more simple and stripped down but it feels more authentic and heartfelt, mostly because of the vocals.

Nine writers is how you get the milquetoast masses not to gripe about controversial content. The rhythms and notes are simple, but effective, and the lyrics are bland and inoffensive. If it's kind of stupid, it's not pushing anyone's buttons. Then it can just generate money by featuring a pretty voice and a producer who knows their software. Stores can play it because it's not going to really offend anyone, even if there are many who don't actually like it. Nothing decided by committee is ever great, but it creates the widest base of allowability by being a compromise that most can put up with. There's a little for everyone to like along with a little, hopefully less, for everyone to dislike. It's probably not anyone's favorite song, but it's also not the worst. It's like bringing home a solid 72% on a group homework project: It's probably no one's best work, but it's also probably not going to make a reasonable parent too mad.

My world of music made a huge change when I started playing guitar. Before that music was like eating a casserole. You could pick out a few flavors but in general it was just the overall package. Afterwords much like a chef being able to taste all the different ingredients in every bite, my ear could now hear the individual notes, chords, bass, drums and keyboards of every instrument to some level. You sir would be in my view one of the great master chefs of the world. You hear things I can barely hear even when you point them out. Thank You.

Exactly. I would at least hope that at least the royalties are split up in percentages so that Dagny is getting like 90% of the sales from that song. If she isn’t, then she signed a bad deal!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 3 роки тому +28

Reminds me of the recent story of that one producer who added his wife - pseudonymously - to a bunch of songs as a co-writer, in order to give his company a bigger share of the royalty pie in a co-production with another company, where the royalty was split evenly per each credited contributor. It turned out she didn't even write anything.
So makes you wonder if the large number of coauthors is... deliberate in this way, even if they did all drop a line or something.
Mhm whether she signed a bad deal? I think KP's song just about passes as a "legally distinct", or could have been modified further to be such, the "sound-alikes" are an engine that major-publisher pop music basically runs on. I think the only options for Dagny would be that either she gets written in and gets a small piece of a bigger pie, or tries to fight them and has like a 50-50 probability of getting bankrupted instead. When you deal with sharks, the only "good" deal is that they leave you alive after they gnaw on you a little bit.

Yes, it appears that Perry's team understood that there was a good chance they could run into © trouble and so they afford Dagny a writing credit (and the publishing money that goes with it) in exchange for not risking a lawsuit in which lawyers would be taking a chunk of those royalties for themselves in the form of legal fees. For Dagny, this is a great deal. She can now make money on two songs - and the one Katie Perry did may actually end up making her more money. On another note, the crazy number of songwriters on pop music today is not really about who wrote the song, but who is getting to share in the song writing publishing money.

You know, there really is something beautiful about the lyrics of Dagny's song that Katy Perry and team couldn't replicate to my ear. It's this idea that Dagny is admitting that she doesn't know how to communicate how much she loves her partner, but she's trying so hard to do so in her song is brilliant. Katy Perry's "Never Really Over" on the other hand is so much more literal in expressing her feelings that the lyrics come off nearly as authentically, especially since much more of the energy of the song is devoted to showcasing Perry's vocal talents. I think that's the extra something that to me makes "Love You Like That" feel like a nearly perfect pop song.

Did she credit Sara Bareilles in the same way she has credited Dagny for this song? If you're sharing credit and revenue there's no real issue. KP and her team get to be a bit creative themselves, imagining a new lyric for a vibe that has really spoken to them. The original artists get recognition, revenue and another route into the playlists of people who might not otherwise have encountered them yet. If the 'inspired' artist is completely upfront about the origin of the inspiration with a clear credit and redirection to the original artist, it can only be good for everyone.

I randomly heard this one when my brother was showing me some of the music he was listening to back in 2013, and I recognized the plagiarism right away...
The intro of a song called “The Ghost of You and I” that was released by a band called “Story of the Year” is totally ripped of from the intro of a song called “New Noise,” by a kickass band named “Refused.”
Story of the Year’s album was called “The Constant,” on Epitaph Records. Wikipedia states that “All lyrics written by Dan Marsala and Adam Russell, all music composed by Story of the Year” on this album. 🙄 *Released* February 16, 2010 *Recorded* Mid 2009 _CLEARLY NO CREDIT WAS GIVEN TO THE BAND REFUSED!_
Refused’s album that had the “New Noise” song on it was called “The Shape of Punk to Come.” Wikipedia states that the album was: *Released* October 27, 1998 *Recorded* Late 1997 Album credits: Music By, Words By - Refused
The band (Refused) was broken up/taking a long hiatus during the period of time that Story of the Year’s “The Constant” was written/released. Wikipedia says that for Refused: *Years active* 1991-1998, 2012; 2014-present
“The Shape of Punk to Come” was originally released on the “Burning Heart” record label. However, Burning Heart has a close affiliation with Californian label Epitaph Records, who own the rights to distribute Burning Heart's output in North America.
_THEREFORE, BOTH ALBUMS WERE DISTRIBUTED ON THE “EPITAPH RECORDS” RECORD LABEL._ They knew exactly what they were doing.
I imagine it would make Refused pretty pissed off if they ever come across that theft and butchering of their amazing, ORIGINAL music, wherein they didn’t even get writing credit.

The visuals in KP's video are even similar to the original.
