I wanted to thank you for the hint about removing the flex tubing to gain access to sliding the video cable and power wire through. Nobody has mentioned that little very important piece of info. I was able to remove panels and hide all my wires but was stuck on that final challenge. Thanks again.
Thank you for the visuals. I just did this today on a 2013 Prius. Hardest part was running wires through that grommet and running for power to the camera from the reverse light, which is NOT on the tailgate. I used one of those cameras that mount upside down so it looks OEM with no wires exposed though.
It's fairly easy to unclip the headlining panel and just run the video feed wire straight through the middle of the cieling. There are videos on youtube showing how to take down the headliner. You actually don't need to take it all the way down. You can leave the side handles on, just take off both cieling lights and the buttons, and that gives you enough room to feed the wire straight through the middle of the ceiling with a little finesse. (A wire coat hanger might be helpful to feed it.) If you want to install a dashcam with rear camera, get one and install it at the same time because a lot of the trim work is the same.
Great series on stereo/camera for the Prius. Any ideas how to wire same backup camera BUT powered through a on/off switch so that backup camera can be used at all times, not only when backing up?. Thanks
I'm sure it's possible. Instead of tapping onto a switched 12v source, you can tap it into a constant 12v switch like the cigarette lighter. Also you'd need to configure your display to always show the backup camera, or add a toggle switch that you'd flip when you want to see it. Depending on your aftermarket stereo model the video may be triggered by a 12v signal.
Great video. My 2011 Prius backup camera doesn't give me the guideline and thinking about replacing just the camera part without have to run the new wire to the front,, do you think it is possible?
Thank you for posting this video it was very helpful. Two questions: 1. Did you run wires from back to front? 2. Did you have to extend the DC cable somehow? I ran my wires from front to back which may have been a mistake. Running them this way I have no way to connect the DC input from the camera to route back to the taillight compartment. Did you extend your 12v input somehow?
Hello Dizzle, I ran my wires from the back to front. The challenging part is running it through the silicone housing between the trunk and car frame. You may be able to install it front the front to back. ua-cam.com/video/G5oGdbJVORc/v-deo.htmlsi=sAAesmLnbTdABFJ5 I connected the backup camera 12v source from one of the reverse lights, so I didn't have to run a power wire through the car.
One more question. Did you run your yellow video cable through the rubber conduit in the hinge of the hatch? I got so frustrated trying to push that end through that i thought, "I'll cut it and feed the through it and splice it back together" forgetting it was my video cord. Got another one on the way. Did you find a trick to pulling it through that conduit or did you bypass it altogether, only bringing the DC cables thru it?
@@Dizzlemane800 I fed the yellow video cable through the rubber conduit, but it was very difficult and required a flat head screwdriver. I pulled power from the rear tail light, so I did not pull power through the rubber conduit.
@@ColinLeung MAN I can't think you enough for your quick and thorough replies. That's a great idea to use a screwdriver VERY CAREFULLY. The point of your video is don't give up. We can make it of we try 🤣. Thanks again buddy. I also found that my red 12v wire attached to my rear taillight was not enough power to trigger the reverse wire on the head unit. I think it's because I'm using the wire as power source the DC. Both wires connected at the taillight. So I tapped the reverse wire from head unit to red wire in kickpanel and that did the trick. I've watched your video at least 10 times. 🤣
I was having issue to put the rubber on the bottom hatch back in place, 5:27. How’d you get it back in, I thought broke something I couldn’t put it back it place, so I had to put tape on top of it just for temporary.
Big question!! Thanks for the video Colin. But quick question, and I hope I'm just a little off. So I'm choosing to run power from back to front with the exact cable you reference here. I'm going to tap camera power from the Reverse light and splice in the trigger power from that too. But where does my front 12V power go? 10:25 you say it goes into the reverse signal switch. You mean I have to extend it and route it under the kick panel? Thanks so much in advance.
Hello Andrew, I'm assuming you're referring to the 12V reverse signal that tells the monitor to switch displays to the backup camera. That 12V signal wire can be fed from either 1)The red wire sticking out of the yellow video cable. One end will tap into the same positive wire from as your backup light, and the other will go directly into your stereo harness for "12V backup switch". 2) Alternatively you can splice a wire from Pin 29 by the kick panel TO the stereo harness for "12V backup switch". Let me know if this answers your question. Thanks
@@ColinLeung Thanks for the response! Yes, I was referencing the 12V Reverse signal. I'll be doing the 1st option you mentioned, where I'll be using the super long yellow RCA with the red + attached. I just haven't had any luck finding what port on the stereo head unit I'll be plugging into. The best I could find is that it's pin 2 on the 28 pin connector (unplug the connector, and it's the second from the left on the top row). Can you throw any validation to that?
Just hooked it up and I am correct! So for anyone looking this information up: to trigger the radio into displaying your camera, you must supply 12V to Pin 2 on the 28 pin connector on the back of the stereo. This can be supplied from a long ass line coming from the Reverse light in the back, or from Pin 28 in the harness under the driver's kick plate. My camera is functional, reply with any questions.
Yes, you can add a backup camera, and will need a display. They sell ones that you can plug into a cigarette lighter, so you do not need to do hard wiring.
Did you have to modify that light at all to fish the cable through? I imagine it wouldn’t be flush, so water might get through. Did you have to use any sealer or something?
I didn't have to modify the light. The cable was thin enough to squeeze between the corner of the light and the trunk. It was pinched a bit, but still worked.
Hey Colin, great video. I have a 2010 Prius that I just installed a Boss Stereo that came with a license plate mount backup camera that looks very similar to the one in your vid my question is where do you connect the red wire comes off the yellow video RCA cable? It is power correct? Can it be spliced into any power source or does it have to be the backup (white) light?
Hello William, you can splice the red wire off of the yellow RCA cable to the same 12v wire that you pulled from the tail light. The other end of the red cable will go into your stereo unit for switched 12v source. I hope this helps.
Hello, are you referring to the plastic below the shifter? I was able to run a wire behind the speaker down the right side panel below the glove compartment
Hello Enrique, I am not too familiar with the stock monitor on a 2013 Prius. With a quick search I did not see an A/V port on the back, but that does not mean there isn't a device to convert one. Sorry that I was unable to help. You can try contacting a local stereo install shop like Best Buys for answers.
Hey! Thanks for the video, it was super helpful. I didn't manage to get i working though as i have an aftermarket android head unit and can't find a trigger pin for switching to the rear camera :( if anyone has faced a similar issue please reply.
It's very important. It's like plugging only the positive cable to your car battery. The car will not start without a complete connection. The same thing will happen with your camera. It will not turn on when it receives a positive voltage because it has no where to go.

@@Adorador247 i know it's a bit late, but for future reference, you can lubricate inside of the rubber grommet with silicon or soapy water as well as a small portion of the wires which you will fish through. Instead of using screwdriver, use a coat hanger and make a hook at one end. Then fold a good length of backup camera wires (black with connector and red for reserve backup light) and loop it under the coat hanger hook. Then tape that part with a good amount of electrical tape and lubricate that portion.
