- Steve and Matt and react to and then we discuss Hi Ren. I've done this song on this channel before, and I'll probably do it again. It's just that good and important.

Ren has LYME DICEASE and have been misdiagnosed for 10 years with the wrong medication that made him worse. He couldn't eat, he couldn't walk, constantly in pain all the time. Brain fog and fatigue. He became allergic to all food and threw up everything every time he tried to eat. He was diagnosed with ME and alot of other things. But he had Lyme disease all the time and almost died. But he didn't gave up. Now he's in Calgary for stamcell treatment and eats a special diet to gain weight. I'm sure the rest of the Renegades will fill you in with the rest. 👍 Best regards from Norway 🇳🇴

I feel like the guy on the right, sorry I don't know your names, really gets Ren. Just something in the facial expressions during his songs. I know you're outside, but let us see your eyes. It's all about reactor emotions. As a 43 yr old man with depression and anxiety I cried the first 10 times I watched this.
Ren is a humble genius...a beautiful soul.
The earrings were typical of what he wore always back then. Later on he stopped wearing the cross( maybe Lost All Faith?)
Now he is wearing a cross necklace. He talks of being agnostic but he admits his spirituality fluctuates .
In his new release Troubles, he sings that he forgives God. It is all about his health journey, so very, very powerful
He also just released 8 Chapters on renmakesstuff. He reads what he has written. Totally links to Hi Ren.

and the Chapters 1 to 8 he reads as a forward to the song
He promised all the people with ME (cfs) Lyme disease
MCAS POTS and other auto immune conditions that if he survived he would make their struggles known and fight for funding and recognition of the need for a solution and and empathy.

You three are very insightful and I enjoyed your reactions and breakdown. I stumbled upon this song about a year ago and was blown away by Ren's talent just amazing. You all mention the skill of playing and singing with the multiple personas which in itself is WOW but i noticed it looked to me like this video was done with one continuous take which to me is incredible!
In the end, the verdict is:
- They were able to record 4 run-throughs of the performance before they were kicked out for making a disturbance (Ren prefers to do guerrilla filming, largely due to until recently only having a shoestring budget for making videos)
- the audio is the live recording from one of the run-throughs (so: a one-take audio recording, done live on-set while being filmed)
- the video is largely from one of the run throughs, but some of the cuts (and the final monologue) are from the other run-throughs.
There's been a lot of confusion over this since its release; people have understood "one-take" and "one-shot" to be different things and Ren's known for having done OTHER true one-shot videos, and he's also said some things on Twitch streams regarding Hi Ren that weren't clear enough to people, so you'll still see fans in the comments sections talking about the audio and all the video all being from a single take. In the last half year, I'm aware of him being very clear and detailed about it in a couple of interviews - saying that the audio is all from a single run-through on set, and that the video is from more than one take.
(I only became aware of Hi Ren not being a one-take after the interview with The Charismatic Voice; I'd seen people claim it wasn't but it was always people saying "there's no way he could film that in one take" which of course doesn't make anyone change their mind if everyone around them is saying it's known to be a one-take)
But that's mind-blowing anyway! How often does an artist pull off a video of a 9min live performance going viral, from 4 run-throughs? Independent artist, yet.
The answer is: no one else does.
Ren videos which are true one-shots, audio and video, are:
- Money Game part 1 (they did possibly as many as 130 takes - Ren and videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey have said different things in different interviews and comments, and I've lost track as to which number was the correct one)
- Chalk Outlines (live) - Ren says they only did a few run-throughs.
- Jenny/Screech/Violet (each video was shot separately over the years, and each is a true one-shot; I have no idea how many run-throughs they had to do for each)
- Animal Flow (they did run-throughs for hours, wrapping up at 4am, not sure how many in total)
Ren videos other than Hi Ren which often get claimed by fans to be one-shots:
- Murderer (a very clever one-take "fake" - there's at least one cut near the end of the video where the camera exits through the car window; it's clear that it's a cut because there's a continuity error with a parked car that mysteriously blips into existence that wasn't there before the camera goes out the window... I don't know if the other camera-passing-through-the-window near the beginning of the video is a cut too or not)
- Money Game 3 (another very clever one-take "fake" - there's a cut as the camera goes behind the chair, and some have said there's a cut early on before the vocals start too but I don't believe I've personally seen Ren or anyone confirm that, whereas I've seen Ren and others involved, explicitly talk about the cut behind the chair)
And then of course there are the live performance videos like How to Be Me, Genesis (acoustic), For Joe, Animal Flow (acoustic) and Murderer (acoustic) which don't particularly have a choreographed element or whatever.
