17:28 the burden for Maynard is that even though his mother was paralyzed by an aneurysm, she still had faith in god. Even at an older age, Maynard couldn’t understand her ability to keep the faith.
Great recognition of Adam Jones’ special talent. Too many dismiss his guitar ability because he doesn’t shred flurries of 32nd notes by which guitarist are often judged. His genius is in creating sound and projecting mood that sets the emotional tone for the song. It’s often very subtle and other times it becomes a vocal character, albeit without words. But it’s never solely a musical gymnastic performance; it’s always tightly connected to the song’s meaning/purpose.
@@PomadeJam As your friend worked/works in film, you could mention that Adam Jones also worked as a sculptor, designer and makeup artist for Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and Dances with Wolves.
Well said! Artistically, Adam can run rings around those other "shredders". His contributions take the songs to another level that no other guitarist could replicate.

My "Favorite" Tool song is something that has changed over my life and will change again. It is more what is the best song to describe how I am feeling right now.
I've been playing Bass for many years, im not all that good, but I will say, the bassline in part II is my favorite Justin Chancellor bassline. Its just so perfect.
This guy is brilliant, he catches so many of the little details on the first listen. For people that don’t understand Tool, AKA my wife lol, I think I may have to have her listen to his break down.
Thank you so much for the lovely reaction to this devastating, but gorgeous song. Already can't wait for the analysis of 10,000 Days - I'll have my tissues ready!
"Sometimes you just need to scream." Yes, yes, and yes. This is part of why metal always draws me more than any genre - vulnerability meets the freedom to scream at (or within) the darkness. I know no better therapy in this life.
Maynard overheard members of the church where his mother attended speak about her somehow deserving her affliction. That she must have done something to earn the aneurysm that incapacitated her. That's where some of what he speaks to here comes from. He really addressed it in the song JUDITH by his other band, A Perfect Circle.
Maynard has said he regrets putting himself out so emotionally bare on this track. They will likely never play this live again. He says it is so hard and complicated and if it goes wrong it turns tragic.
Oh, man. I can totally see that. Makes me jealous of those that did get to hear it live. Can you imagine, being in the room with these musical emotions?
I think this song is one of the most direct lyrics Tool has ever made. I don't see a lot of double meaning in his words. In my mind, he is singing the exact replica of what he would say in therapy, for example. He is both in anger and awe. Angry at his mom for her faith, and in awe for the exact same reason. Definitely angry at god, for "breaking" her, and for still being the focus of her life. He definitely is struggling with lacking faith, and at the same time being son of someone he considers the closest one can be to an angel. He puts me in his shoes in a way that makes me feel that anger as if it was with me. This song makes me cry tears of sadness and anger at the same time. Having said that, what really makes me angry is that you divided this one piece of art in two. Get the next one in, please. Great reaction, keep 'em coming
great thoughts on this. Since the tracks were divided on the album, and because the reaction was quite long, we divided the videos, but we actually listened to the songs back to back. It was a tough call, maybe the wrong one, but watching a reaction that's well over an hour seemed a bit long. Part two will be posted in a few minutes.
@@PomadeJam Yeah I understood why you did it. I'm maybe part of a minority who would be totally ok watching a 2 hour video on this song, but I get why you did it xD thanks for that
Tool Song Jimmy is another one that goes well with this song. Speaking from the perspective of when Maynard was a Boy and his mother had just suffered her aneurysm. The story telling comes from both of their experiences.
The guitarist from this band Adam Jones was a special effects artist in Hollywood and worked on such films as Jurracic Park 2, Terminator 2, Nightmare On Elm Street, and others. He also makes all of TOOL's videos. Adam has technical skill but he also has enormous restraint in order to preserve the emotion in the music, making him and the other members of the band, some of the most tastful musicians I've ever heard.
Seeing these two songs live in 2007 was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. I’m so happy you guys are covering these songs. Awesome reactions. I believe I read somewhere that Maynard thinks this song is too personal and he actually kind of regrets it.
I must need better headphones. I never knew part 1 had hospital sounds at the beginning. I love how detailed your analysis of these songs is. It helps me to appreciate their artistry even more!
„Judith” (by Maynard’s other band „A Perfect Circle”) is the younger Maynard wrestling with this subject. „Wings for Marie” is, for me, the acceptance of it. You are quickly becoming my favorite „couple” analyzing Tool. The beautiful thing is, at least as far as I’m concerned, that you basically can interpret those songs in so many ways and almost all of them are so interesting! By the way, you nailed it with his mother being a religious person.
@@PomadeJam woohoo!! It sounds crazy to be excited about such a deeply moving song, I will cry....but it's worth every second. We all need the help processing trauma.

Just finished right in two and vicarious. Great vids. I have to say the song choices are perfection. Those two then Wings ?! Youre a madman lol Right into the deep end!
Great reaction guys! You really read into this correctly - VERY astute observations! My sincerest sympathies to your losses. Usually Maynard is much more cryptic in his lyrics, but here, I think he really wanted to be clear...clear of his love for his mom and vice versa, clear of the 27 year struggle she faced, clear of her unwavering faith, and clear of her deserving to be in heaven! The 'accepting' nature of his words here should stand in contrast to his lyrics for 'Judith' by A Perfect Circle (Maynard's other band, it's a track you should review - because it shows his 'anger' in that one!) I can't get through this song without tears...my empathy to the whole situation, made even more poignant since my own mom's passing in 2018. This one hits deep!
@@GaffneyInkwell thank you! Speaking of songs hitting deep - you'd appreciate this - on the day of my mom's cremation, after it was done, my family & I assembled in the adjoining chapel. What song comes over the speakers - Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd! Significant as I introduced my mom to Floyd, and that song (and esp. Shine On) were favourites. I was already an emotional wreck, but with that I had to look to the heavens and ask 'Mom? Really?' Music has such a way of tapping into our emotions! Sorry for rambling...thought you'd appreciate the story. Cheers.
Also, the TOOL song Jimmy is related to this (two part) 10,000 Day masterpiece and also, the song Judith by the band A Perfect Circle. All written at different times and tackling different frames of reference as Maynard works through the trauma of seeing and experiencing his mother becoming embolized for 27 years (or, 10,000 Days). Sometimes it's a lot of anger and frustration with her, because of her commitment to her religion and other times, it's about what it did to him personally. One of the primary themes in the song Jimmy might be a clue as to why Maynard says in this two part song: "It's time for us to let you go" -- "us" being the word to focus on in this line.
Sorry Sean that you can not go and listen to all their albums. Those analysis must excite your curiosity. I like your reactions so much, it reminds me when I lent some disks to my favorite teacher (in philosophy). I never listen to this pair of songs casually. If I'm listening to the album driving, I skip these. To me they're for reflecting on lost family, and I always get emotional hearing them. Lateralus is my favorite album by them, but Wings and 10K days is a fucking masterpiece. The incredible musical choreography, singing the lyrics from his soul, and the deep deep emotions these songs elicit. The next song, with the slow building crescendo ending in Maynard screaming to heaven and challenging God, followed by the sickest drum/bass groove and breakdown ever into him coming to peace and finally saying goodbye and letting her go.... as good as any of the great classical composers' and masters' writing in my biased opinion.
It's a good song, but one I often avoid cuz it's so sad and reminds me of my own parents mortality and your own existence and what it's going to be like when you go with your family surrounding you in your own deathbed.
