    The holes you got are usually because of oxygen that's dissolved in the silver, when it solidifies, the gas falls out of solution, forming holes. Using some fresh silver in the cast helps minimise the issue. Casting grain usually has some zinc in it to help with the castability, which burns off when you remelt it repeatedly.

  • @briansaban3849
    @briansaban3849 3 роки тому +24

    A few tips: 1. The holes (Porosity) are from one of two things, when you cast silver you should be using at least 50% casting grain with your old silver. 2. Make sure you are giving your flask at least 10 mins to cool before shocking it in the water. Also on castings of this size, you really only need one sprue per piece. Makes clean up much easier. I use their resin with my Form 2 and while it works well, I get a lot of shrinkage, I'm curious if your ring sizes shrunk? Casting is all about finding the right temps, from molten metal, to cast temp when pouring to cooling before shocking. It takes a while to dial everything in, but once you find it life is pretty easy.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  3 роки тому +7

      Thanks for all the info and I will have to check the shrinkage.

    • @Tatsumaki7
      @Tatsumaki7 3 роки тому +1

      1. You're saying to make at least 50% be fresh silver? That would help?
      2. Resin is causing shrinking or the silver?

    • @briansaban3849
      @briansaban3849 3 роки тому +3

      @@Tatsumaki7 yes you should never use 100% scrap. It cause porosity in the cast. As far as shrinkage, it’s the resin.

      @@Tatsumaki7 I tend to size it after printing. I always print my rings on the smaller size and sand the resin print before casting. I have a form 2 and heard good things about there new resin with much more wax in it. I’m hoping it’s better than there last castable resins.

    Hi. i look, and the things I can say is about you burn out in oven: you need make some stop point. 1 step 100° for 1 hour, 2° step 1 hour at 400°, 3° step 750° for 3 hours and then go to temperature casting. Why this step? 1° step for remove totally the water, make completely dry the gypsum, 2° step for make osmogenes the temperature in to the flask. This is may way to cast since 20 years. By the way, nice video, and honestly good result.

    Hi! Love your channel. I bought some of your great work in the past and am very happy to have received it - the giftee was suitably impressed and honored. Serious question: as an artist and craftsman, would you recommend someone starting out who wants to make really nice creations in jewelry design to go with old-fashioned wax carving/casting or would you recommend 3D printing? Obviously, the 3D printing has several advantages one being that you can tap into a bunch of pre-existing designs, and another being that you don't have to be good at carving (though if you want to create original pieces you may have to become skilled at 3D modeling which itself has a steep learning curve). As an artist I kind of expect you to say start with the old fashioned way, which frankly I am thinking is the best way. But I also suspect you have a different perspective and I would love to hear it. Second question if it's not too much: what *basic* setup might you recommend to get into 3D printing for casting? Thank you!

    I also wanted to ask. Have you tried making a silicone mold of the piece that comes out of the printer? That way you could just pour wax in a silicone mold instead of having to print new pieces with the expensive resin. Or would that yield a less accurate piece?

    I’m fairly new to this so my questions are during the burnout cycle does the flask need to be suspended off the bottom of the burnout kiln? And if so what do you use to suspend it? One more question please will the wax or resin harm the bottom of the kiln or is there anything I should use to catch the wax/resin if so what should I buy to catch the wax/resin?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  2 роки тому +3

      You don't have to suspend it but it will help the gas/smoke to get out and away from the part.
      You can get some metal screen things to catch the wax/resin but I haven been able to find some that is small enough to fit in my kiln. It might damage the floor over time just I have done a lot of burn out not and the most it has done is changed the color in spots but in the next burn out it will be gone.

      What settings are you using for the bottom layers?

    • @oOAjjOo
      @oOAjjOo 3 роки тому +1

      The reccomended settings, but then I turned them up even higher. I did successfully get of like 2 sets of prints but it is never consistent.

    • @oOAjjOo
      @oOAjjOo 3 роки тому +1

      30s exposure time and 160 second bottom layer exposure. I'm sure the issue is just that they keep falling from the build plate. And I leveled it correctly I'm pretty sure.

      That is a very long time. Are you using the mars v1 or the one with the mono screen?

    • @oOAjjOo
      @oOAjjOo 3 роки тому +1

      I'm using the elegoo mars pro, the exact same one as you. Should I reduce to exposure time?

      @@GomeowCreations is the ELEGOO better than the any cubic ? I am looking into getting a printer for jewellery but I dont know which is better for castings, does it make a difference?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  2 роки тому +1

      They are very similar to be honest at least the Elegoo mars 2 pro and the Anycubic mono. It could really come down do you like red or yellow haha.
      When it comes to the newer printers like the Mars 3 4k and the Anycubic mono 4k it might be a very similar thing as well but I haven't tried the Anycubic one yet so I don't know for sure.
      What is your budget for a printer?

    • @julia77876
      @julia77876 2 роки тому +1

      @@GomeowCreations probably around 400$ I know the mars 2 pro is 400 but the any cubic is cheaper I think, are they both good with a variety of resin brands?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  2 роки тому +1

      Yes they are both good with different brands. Also what country are you in? I only ask because the Mars 2 pro is much cheaper than $400

    can't really take the results as a best case, due to using two different printers and settings..... invalid result... but a cool vid.

      Each resin is needs it's worn print settings but has the same burnout. The Anycubic Mono and Mar Pro 2 are basically the same machine when it come to specs and I used the same slicer on both. So this should be fine 😅👍

    Hi. First time watching your channel. Great work, but I have one criticism. Playing music in the background while you are speaking doesn't work. Especially the way it was mixed, as it made it nearly impossible to hear what you are saying. If what you're saying is important then leave the music out, or just play music if you feel you have to. Not both.
    For some reason creators seem to think they have to play music with their videos. Personally, I would rather just watch you work in silence and speaking when needed rather than listen to a creators taste in music. Is your channel a 'creative' or music channel? Just sayin'

      I have cut just about all music from my videos about a year ago now 😁👍 check out my newest casting video to see how things have changed ua-cam.com/video/t2H_lV8IOyY/v-deo.html

      Yeah I got a lot of people complaining about music seeing that everyone has different likes and dislikes. I have stopped putting music in my main videos. This video is about 6mounths old now so I can really edit the music out. 😅

    • @shadowmihaiu
      @shadowmihaiu 3 роки тому +1

      @@GomeowCreations Honestly... I didn't notice anything messing up. I would say that if you want music, which isn't a bad idea, it should be very low key, not distracting and definitely not compete with the volume of your voice.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  3 роки тому +1

      Yep that is what I mean for the messed up spot, it's not meant to have music there. It was a clip I cut and moved but forgot to delete... And I can't edit it out of the video after I upload it. 😅
