Hahahhaha. But she want an Excalibur sword so she's only disappointed that I bought a small electric kiln than a full sized 3 burner gas forge, anvil, blacksmithing tools etc so that I could litterally forge her a sword for no real reason outside of her liking it from a Netflix series.

Austin Hussey That’s how to do it young man. Little by little. Carve a few wax rings for her so she can see how dedicated you are and what you’ll be making for her but you can’t make them, not if you haven’t got a kiln. Maybe someone can rent you a kiln for one month. Local Lapidary club might be able to help you out but if you can’t hire one, you’re another step closer to getting your own. Or start a money box for your kiln. Every day empty every coin from your pockets and wallets, into the money box. It soon mounts up. Like that pun?😆. No harm in trying.
Words can not explain how thankful I am for teaching us about the layer coating for the castable resins! I wasted a whole 500g bottle of PowerCast Dark and half of the bottle of my Burn resin. Was trying to get a successful print for over a month and ever since I add the base layer I have not had a single failure! Keep doing your thing!!!!!

Great video! Love your humor! I was curious as to if this resin performed as well as it does, it seems so! I think your ring even has better details than the GTHIC ring, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it, on one hand your ring is so perfect it appears clearly manufactured and that may not appeal to some people, the GTHIC ring clearly looks more handmade and has those tiny imperfections to show that, plus it has more of a vintage look to it (hard to explain, the best way I can is that ancient jewelry from early peoples you could easily see the tool marks and they were much less perfect compared to today's stuff). I am going for a high degree of perfection for what I am doing though, as my design is extremely detailed, standard resin struggles with it and I know for sure my own hands couldn't manage it!
Kudos! I think it turned out great. The trick to using jewelry saws is to let the saw blade do the cutting. If you notice the blade bending then you're putting to much pressure on the saw. When I notice myself doing that, I take a break and have a cup of coffee.

That’s an awesome job! If you want to save your saw blades, you need to use almost no pressure going perpendicular to the blade. Grip the handle so loosely that you’re worried you’d drop it, and let the blade do the work. The back and forth will cut it all by itself :)

For me there´s nothing more satisfying than going out into the world knowing that I´ve got a spotless, smart, really well-turned-out ring.
I know what you mean, but I've personally found that displaying a ring openly with pride can often draw the wrong sort of attention : )
Personally I like the imperfections in hand made. The skill to create beauty by hand. Look at the diamonds very carefully the are not perfectly round. I would love to sit at the jewellers feet that made this ring and learn. ua-cam.com/video/vJQBn5fAtpw/v-deo.html

Nice vid. How important is it to have the kiln preheated when you pour the molten metal into it? Trying to plan this out beforehand and its a minor hassle since I've only got a single outlet strong enough. Maybe I can have the oven in a diffrent room and walk over with the molten metal from another room but that doesn't seem ideal. Any help appreciated Thanks!
Very nice ring Geoff! Your videos are great for showing just how much effort and time it takes to (hopefully) get the desired result at the end of the process. I also disagree on which ring looks better... I prefer the look of bronze, especially after it has developed it's petina. The stainless steel ring looks great too, but I also like your simpler pattern To my eyes it less 'busy'... IMHO anyway. Good job mate!
Thanks Dan. There's a lot more detail on the silver ring and you know me and detail... it's what I strive for. It's possible to attain I think, but I've got a way to go yet : )
Hi! Print looks great, have you tried printing on Anycubic Photon? I've issue with this resin, first layers print great, but another one doesn't stick to build plate and swim in VAT... At what temperature do you print?

I haven't tried it in honesty... but powerresins are pretty forgiving. Find yourself something small but detailed (there are test prints like that out there). Start with 3 secs and see what happens. You many need to go up or down... that's why you want a small fast print 😁

Which drill bits did you use to clean off the casted piece? we are having some trouble polishing gold so i am wondering which bits and/or grit paper should i use to polish and make it smooth?

This is a great review, thanks VOG! I'm looking at doing some prints for someone else to cast, which is your favourite resin so far for this technique? You mention you prefer this Powercast Wax to Burn, but how does it compare to say Bluecast or others? What's easier to get hold of in the UK?
I've yet to try Blucast. I hope to soon.

What are the properties that make the silicone rubber that you use in moulding suitable to have molten metals poured into them? I am trying to find an Option for use in the US before I dive deeply into casting, but since the product you use can only be delivered within the UK, I'm at a bit of a loss.
Beautiful ring! I love the gold color of the bronzes. I work with aluminum bronze and thats some Hard stuff! Never worked with silicon bronze but i'm guessing its pretty tough stuff also from the looks of your poor saw blades.
It's early days for me Keith, but for strength I'd probably give it to Al. Bronze. For fluidity, definitely Sil. Bronze. For shine? I love them both equally : )

Hi Josh. Lost Wax or Lost Resin ideally needs a vacuum system. I experimented with this a while ago and built a DIY system which will really show you how useful vacuums are - ua-cam.com/video/EGNnH_xbjR4/v-deo.html

The barrel tumbler? They're really useful. You can find them everywhere these days. Here's one on Amazon amzn.to/2ObNj5w
You use small metal shot (ball bearings) and these gently burnish and shine the metal : )

The ring turned out PDG if you ask me. I saw a roll of wax filament for the 3D printer on some site. Might give it a go one day. Have you ever tried anything like that? Good work.

I'm self taught in Fusion 360 as I am with everything else... it's how I learn best, so I'm afraid I don't know any good tutorials out there. I do know that Fusion (Autodesk) have their own UA-cam Channel though : )
Did you use any sort of vacuum chamber for the investment?
When you create a primed build plate in the manner we've previously discussed, do you then clean and re-home/re-level the build plate or continue with the settings as they were?
No, I just carry on as if it doesn't exist. I know that doesn't sound as though it would work, but the proof is in my videos 😊
@@vogman i had the same quesion lol. Wouldn't that put a lot of stress on your LCD? I guess it's force over area so the pressure is low, but my LCD is already partially broken lol.
whats the furnace you use?
You can really clean up that front face by sanding it to a high grit and buffing it. It'll make the edges a lot crisper and get rid of the printing lines aswell.

They remind me of a company called Bucktown Polymers, where you can buy resins by the KG for far less than by the liter.

I am looking for information - Is there a problem in the casting process when casting sharp edges of jewelry? For example, the shape of the tree - do you need rounding at the edges to get the metal to every corner of the casting mold? You made beautiful ring!

What kind of primer do you use to prime the build plate. I am having trouble having my pieces stick to the build plate. Ive Tried 3 in 1lubricant and tried the technique you showed with the prime coat. Havent had any luck yet
The resin itself is the primer. Just apply a thin layer and double the Base Layer time : )
do you have a video tutorial on how you use fusion 360? I'm very novice and watching you sketch out the design used a lot of functions I didn't know existed.
Actually all I really did was sketch. Get to grips with simple sketching and you'll be fine : )
Unfortunately I'm self taught so I don't have any tutorial videos, but there are plenty out there I believe.

Here I was using Fusion 360. However, I'd recommend FreeCAD now as Fusion 360 has become awkward with their licensing. FreeCAD, as the name suggests, if free, and very capable 😁
I was wondering if you can use normal resin sold by Elegoo to do a lost resin cast? Or is it a must that you have to use these specialty resins to be able to have a proper burn out? Obviously I would prefer using the Elegoo brand stuff due to the difference in price point. Thanks for your many videos, keep up the good work!
No my friend. Ordinary resins don't burn away cleanly and often give off toxic fumes.

Hi, I hope you help me with small details about the power wax, 1. what kind of liquify you rinsed the prints (in the bucket)? 2. What’s the best and fastest way to dry it afterwards? I thank you in advance.
Happy to help. Prints are washed in Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) but I also use Methylated Spirits.
Once they have been rinsed, give them a quick shake and blast them with a hair dryer - but on a COOL setting : )

Amazing job! One of these days ill find the time to do this stuff. I've wanted to design a ring for some time. I just can't seem to figure out fusion 360 lol. I designed a simple sphere shaped shift knob and even used the threaded hole option to put threads in the hole for it to screw onto the shifter. When I exported it the threads didn't export and I have no idea why. Everything else I try to do has some error that says I can't do what im trying to do but doesn't explain what im doing wrong. I feel like a caveman lol
I swear Fusion just likes to confuse us. If you watch the video again you'll see hundreds of warning messages flashing up almost constantly. I convinced there's one that says, "Warning: You are not bothering to read our warning messages."
As for threads, I haven't tried that so I can't advise. I find Fusion a pain at exporting stl files sometimes (it's so slow). Instead I go direct to 3D print via Cura. From there, rather than print, I export as as stl. Sounds more involved but I can see if everything is there and still get the job done faster than waiting on Fusion : )

Yes. Always with castable resins as they become gas.
Wheres the fun in just buying one. You wear it and feel proud you put in the time and effort to create such a nice ring. You could have went with .925 silver. That would have been nice. Thanks!

I've actually got a small bag of 925 infront of me right now. I have a few projects in mind but I want to get the above mentioned out of the way first.
I am using alphasense DLP/SLA Castable resin with my elegoo mars any tips on the settings and why it keeps sticking to the fep film?
If it's on the film it's not sticking to the plate. Get everything nice and level and really bake on those first few layers : )
You're heavy-handed with the saw.
Try a lighter touch. LOL
I was getting the same results *snap*, I eased up and they lasted longer and performed a bit better.
That, and I got #2 blades as well. :D
I still use #4 where needed.

I'd love to see a review of makerjuice waxcast. It's one of the cheaper castable resins at $55 for 500ml. I had to prime the build plate to get it to stick but the detail looked good.

How does adding the 'prime layer' of .2mm affect the 'homing' of the build plate when you start the actual print? By adding that layer make the build plate to close to the FEP/LCD screen and push in to much?
It's a valuable question. I honestly expected it to make a difference - but it didn't : )

Many thanks. I'm completely self taught and I'm still learning as I go. I'm thrilled to say I know many of my viewers have watched my videos and progressed alongside me. They're producing stuff just as good as me if not better! One great guy, Dan, recently cast his own weddings rings!!!
If you're very serious about it and have the time and money, local colleges etc run courses. If time is an issue, you're welcome to watch my videos. I'd suggest starting with this one ua-cam.com/video/CxqCeoKip4k/v-deo.html which was where I first dabbled with Lost Wax Casting (a traditional Jewellers technique). If you watch every casting video that follows, I switch between techniques at times, making and changing my own equipment to save money, but an hour or two of watching will bring you to exactly where I am now.

Hey there. Quick question concerning casting plaster in general. I only have a small Furnace that can go to 800 and 1000°C. How important are these burnout cycles for a successfull lost pla cast? Should i try doing it or is it defineatly going to fail? Just wanted to ask someone experienced
Happy to help. I'd say critical. The burnout process not only removes all the PLA, it prepares the plaster, burning away the excess moisture and making it properly porous. 800C is more than enough. My burnout rate cycle maxes at 750 I seem to recall : )
