This is the definitive version of Kate McKannon. The tone and delivery are spot on. Other than maybe the album version, I haven't heard anything come close to this one...
I recently learned of Colter while riding in a big rig tow truck towing my Mack out of Iowa. Father and son tow truck drivers as country as country can be straight pipe jake braking 65 mph at every 30 mph sign and Colter cranked on the radio. Couldn’t have been a more fitting time to learn of this man.
I think the slower pace of this version and the album version gives the song so much more power and emotion. Being that all the other songs he sang on the brewery sessions were off his first ep I feel like Kate McCann wasn’t truly finalized when he did it for them.
Completely different sound and style but the guitar work on Ren's "Tale of Jenny and Screech" is amazingly creative too. Both of these guys are master storytellers. Love it.
This version is the best , slow low and sad suits the song. Like others have said it's a bummer his voice has changed a bit with his newer stuff. That said he surly has a bright future ahead.
@JonnyKoval-x3y bro I had forgotten I wrote this comment and like a week ago I put this video on and was dying laughing at my own comment until I realized it was me who had written it weeks earlier 🤣 I'm fried!
Never happen. He doesn't fit the bro country mold. Nashville doesn't take kindly to real artist who pour their hearts into real art. They want dime-dozen songs about pickup trucks, dirt roads, drinkin beers, and painted on jeans.
Sing man sing . I get chills when i hear this, give it to raw i 'll take it home and cook it myself 😊 where the wind blows and nobody's home that's where you'll find me sitting on a rock with my black dog waiting for spring
What do you think now?? I think he's the greatest Country singer/songwriter toping all the classic ones, (i grew up listening to the the likes of Townes Van zadt and Ian tyson) still i think Colter is the greatest
@@Hell.on.foot1 man, I’m glad to have found him so early in his career. Been loving everything he’s put out over the years, and I’ve been able to see him perform in several different venues when he passes through Indianapolis. Guys like him, Tyler Childers, Drayton Farley, Vincent Neil Emerson, Charley Crockett, Sturgill Simpson, Nolan Taylor, and Jason Isbell are keeping things interesting these days!
A very young man with the soul of an old man that lived a hard terrible life.. excellent story teller.. the guitar build as his anger grows at seeing his darling Angel with another lover… just incredible.
In the Brewery Session he played the song with a capo on the third fret and automatically sings it a half step higher. In the normal KateMccannon video and in this video he plays the song with a capo on the second fret (half step lower). So he sings it lower. I like this version more than the Brewery Session version(But I like both).
At 3:03, you can really tell that singing this song hits him in a certain spot. The way he panned at the camera for a second, looking defeated, almost acting out the song.
I’ve seen people compare the brewery sessions to this and other live videos. I saw a comment that was the perfect way to describe brewery sessions vs others. This version seems like he is thinking back on what happened with Kate and is sad and potentially feels bad about it. The brewery sessions version feels more angry in the story telling. Both are fantastic!!
I've tried to look for him on npr and can't find it. On you tube, right? The links donald phect posted don't work either. Anyway, I like this version, I've seen other videos of him singing this song, and maybe they're a bit better. Maybe he was just having a bad day when this was filmed, you never know.
No such thing as a bad performance from Colter, but I think this song needs the energy of a mid-day brewery session to be at full performance potential - - I could listen to him sing anything, but this is low energy and missing the pacing that makes the brewery sessions recordings work so well. I understand he wanted to do it differently like artists tend to do, and it's good to have another version, but if you are showing someone this song for the first time I would avoid this one and give them the one that hooked me. He's in Manhattan and out of his element in this version- too much stuff to do there and he likely spent his energy chasing white lines and warping his mind while killing the time and just didn't know it, then it comes time to do a song and it's great but very very chilled.... maybe too chilled...
Year late I know, but this version and the album version give this song so much more power and emotion in my opinion. Being that I heard the album version first I never really liked the brewery sessions all that much. This version is much more powerful and flowing
@@brandonherzig2468 I always respond to 1+ year old comments myself. I think its bc i heard the brewery sessions first. That and its live - the album version is done in a studio and is put together and mixed differently - retakes and what not - but with this, aside from post mixing, its genuine and speaks to his ability.
He just pumps out a murder ballad like it's the easiest thing on earth and goes back to ranching. What a man
This is the definitive version of Kate McKannon. The tone and delivery are spot on. Other than maybe the album version, I haven't heard anything come close to this one...
The brewery sessions one has like 13 million views and is way better imo. Like this is fantastic but the Brewery Sessions one is legendary
Better than the brewery session.
@@UA-camChannelNot 10000% disagree
I feel like the brewery version is Rushed and he doesn't deliver it as thoroughly as he does when he takes time to play it
@@UA-camChannelNot another vote for this version over the brewery sessions. But both are fantastic
The 10 people who disliked this, ended up just like Kate McCannon. This is an absolute BANGER!! ❤️🤘
Kate McCannon just made 10 accounts
😂😂😂👍🏼
How am I only discovering this cat now???
great feeling isn't it ?
Reckon he's a voice unconstrained by time - You won't be the last in-awe of his songs.
Joe Rogan ? That's how I heard about him
He's not a cat. He's a man
I wanted to comment on this so you could discover him again. Because I too am discovering this here cat.
Pure talent like this don't come around too often
I wonder what colters up to these days - need more of this greatness
@@Red_Dead_Director he just recently cut up a record with Summer Dean
this version has grown on me i dont know what i was thinking initially
It does, but it's only brought to widespread attention when manifested in the offspring of people with influence. Look up who this guy's father is.
We are blessed to be a witness to such talent

Went to sleep listening to this song and woke up with boots on! 🤠
My favorite is the brewery sessions video, but anytime Colter sings is a gift and I appreciate it!
Agreed, that version is too Godly
The drum makes it better
I like this version better myself. I think it fits the song better
@@skdrcr Agree. This haunting and melancholy version fits the lyrics.
Snake mountain blues is another that's right up there
Am I the only one who enjoys this more than the brewery sessions?
no. i like this one better also.

Definitely not. This one is vastly superior.
I do enjoy this one more but I thought the solo bass drum he was using in the other one was pretty cool.
This one is very good but the other has its place to like I wouldn’t play this version in a hyper environment like a busy bar I’d play the other
How the guitar builds up emotion after finding Kate with another lover. Genius
Didn’t see your comment.. yes so amazing..
I noticed that too. Gosh he's so talented 😍
Completely different sound and style but the guitar work on Ren's "Tale of Jenny and Screech" is amazingly creative too. Both of these guys are master storytellers. Love it.
This is good music. I miss good music. There is SO MUCH talent that gets overlooked. This guy is an old soul. I am in awe of his talent!
Not many people can make guitar buzz sound so cool, this guy has talent
He also tends to tune a half step down and puts a capo on the second fret. To make the strings loose but keep regular tuning.
Joe rogan made me discover him a while ago.
Such an old soul.
I only listen to him now. Cant get enough.
2024 still the best song ever.
That's why legends never die
I dont like country music but im now a huge Colter Wall fan!
Kicking myself in the ass I didn’t find this sooner
No one cares less about loose string fret buzz than Colter. Love it.
Johnny Cash always had a lot of fret buzz, but I always loved how he never let it bother him.
How did I not find him all these years. UA-cam be hiding lot of artists.
Joe Rogan got me here
Look at that!😳 Country music ISN'T dead🤘
And he’s Canadian 😂
This version is the best , slow low and sad suits the song.

He's smoking that Kate McCannon pack.

unreal!! The guitar tells just as much of the story as the vocals!

Merci Colter . Love and respect from the frenchie part.
Saw Colter twice smal hall in Maberly than my bday at opera house in Toronto they were two awesome shows and good times after
Fantastic, just love the original arrangement he had so much more

The brewery session had alot more emotion put behind the singing, this is still great, but could have had more emotion for sure

wicked game by Chris Isaak would be a great song to cover with that voice

The way the shadow covers his face after that line is foreshadowing
There is just something about this live version....
Guy sounds like they had him breathing sand as a kid and gargling nails as a teenager. That's an old man's voice.
That’s pretty damn good version.
Colter is RAW AF !!!
