hey guys, what are your thoughts on the difference in open air feeling? my big hang up in choosing between the RF and the soft top are the comments i’ve heard that the RF is more like a big moon roof and not really a convertible open top feel.

Completely agree. However you didn't test the passenger side. I didn't test it with the mirrors but you simply can't just glance over your right shoulder like you expect to in a convertible. Because it's not a convertible. Great looking car. Love a lot about it, but went with a 2012 PRHT MX-5 instead. If they provide a real hard top Miata for the 30th anniversary, I'll upgrade.

Before getting my Miata, I had a full sized customized delivery van where there are "blind spots" almost everywhere & you are forced to RELY on those side mirrors. Turned out to be great training! Now I'm faster & more comfortable using my mirrors.👍
It was good but you can't look both places at once and cars sometimes drive fast. There should ideally be plenty of overlap. Though it seems there may be with this car.

I used to love Motor Trend's different videos. Watched them all the time until they paywalled them and now UA-cam acts like the channel was shut down and I never see them in my feed anymore. But yeah, this has to be my new favorite car channel.

Such a good point about blind spot. I realized after a month of owning a Miata that I don’t have to check over my shoulder because there is no blind spot! The car is too short to have blind spots lol!
rainystorm88 the Smart Fortwo has the least blindspots.
When you're short like me, there's a blind spot over your shoulder in the RF. The mirror probably fixes most of that, but at my 5'7" height, the RF right rear pillar hid the world.
If you can see it by turning your head, it isn't a blind spot. You can see it. We have necks for a reason.

I am not sure I understood the test. Did they mean the car has a blind spot or that it does NOT have a blind spot?
@@meetsharma3442 It does NOT have a blind spot, since Jakob was always able to see the car, either in the mirror or by glancing sideways.

I've had my 2016 Soul Red soft top GT since February and it's the best! You guys are correct about every praise and concern in this review. It is my only car and I thought I would miss having a larger car and I don't, you just have to adapt and pack light.
It's not fast, it gets fantastic mileage (avg 35mpg in my long commutes), it's fun to rev up, shift gears, and throw into corners. FYI, there is a secret trunk release outside, way down low to the right of the rear license plate tucked under that lip. Hopefully it will quit raining and warm up this weekend so I can put the top down and head to the beach.
I feel like we’re going to get at least 1 million comments addressing that trunk button. I’m ashamed I missed it :-(
That's the truth! Haha! It is a little hard to find down there because you can't see it, it takes a couple tries to find it, kind of like those kick sensors.
You will have to check. Feel under that lip above the license plate, just to the right of the plate but before it starts to curve down. There is a small black rubber square and the button is in the middle. You may have to bend down to see it.
I'm glad someone covered the trunk release. Mazda couldn't put it where they normally would, so they had to slide it down to the side, almost to the corner of the trunk.
Also, I had a 2016 GT roadster, in gray! It wasn't my first choice, but it is an excellent color (especially with the full Mazda aero kit installed). In the US, it was the only color in 2016 that came with tan leather as the only interior color (the black was optional in tan, but no other color got tan except the 1,000 launch editions in red).

At 15:25 you indicate there is no trunk button... Ah but there is! Right above the right side of the license plate is a hidden button to release the trunk manually.

Fun review as always. Two reasons to get the RF: 1. it looks better. 2. There are two types of people that buy the mx5, those that love it because it's a light-weight great handling car and those who want it because it's a cute convertible. Getting the RF makes it clear which group you are a part of. : -)

Honestly, the MX5 RF and GT86 are two of my favorite sports cars within the price range. Everything that could be made fun about driving, they have. Its never BEING the fastest but all about having the most fun. I remember test driving the normal MX5 and fell in love. The RF is absolutely the best looking MX5 and since I'm in the states, its a pretty smacking good deal.

There is a Button for The trunk just over The numberplate (at least there is one in The softtop)
HSV Commodore there's one on the RF too. These 2 experts missed it.
Yep my soft top has the boot (trunk) button next to the number plate light.
A few markets actually didn't have that button at one point. I'm not sure if it's still the case in 2018 & not sure whether Canada was one of those markets. It's been a discussion point on the forums before though.

Spot on when you talked about blind spots. Some people don't know what they're talking about. If you can see it out your side window or in your mirror, you don't have a blind spot. Its arguable if you have to look out a rear window to see it.

FINALLY A Miata that men can feel comfortable being seen in. That a beautiful car. Needs turbo, needs 220ish HP and 240 or so torque at 1500rpm. Again love it.
I did own a cx3, but too small traded for a used 2015 golf trendline then traded the golf for a '17 GTI autobahn.

I wrote this comment before watching till the end. Ups. I thought it must be similarly priced like in Germany, but it is apparently not. Price in germany? Starts at 17.700euro, which is 27.500 CAD.
This has the optional brembo package and the additional cost paint. You can get a much cheaper. In the US you can get the regular RF Club for $31,910, but equipped as they are driving it here is $37,165

I don’t think anybody can hate on the MX-5 but one can hate on its price, it’s a bit steep for what you get, it’s definitely more of an emotional purchase.
I really like the Fiat 124 spider but I don’t like the fact that it’s a Fiat, it’s not that they don’t make good cars now because FCA is doing some great things, but they should have stuck an Alfa Romeo badge on it and I think they would have tripled their sales.
Ford should make something to rival this, I might be saying this because I’m biased and I own a Ford, but there’s no denying they know how to setup a fun to drive car. Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Focus RS, Mustang GT350R as examples.
Suggestion, after you give the as-tested price take a minute to tell how you would spec out the car and in doing so you can give base price then your spec preference price to contrast fully loaded or as-tested price.

THANKS for reviewing the new Miata! I loved it. I test drove a '15 Miata cuz I wanted a fun, hot 2-seater but wound up buying a '14 Mini Cooper Roadster instead. Deciding factor was the turbo in the Mini. And now that it has been discontinued, I feel like I drive a rare collectible! But I still like the Miata.

I hope more manufacturers focus on fun and weight reduction, like Renault rebooting the Alpine brand. I've seen the new alpine a110 two times on the road now. It's like a mx5 on steroids to me.
The mx5 is already quite expensive though. The RF starts at 34k can go up to +46k for the base gt-m in the netherlands.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, I eat lunch watching whatever video you post! Can't wait for the new Mazda 6, Corolla hatchback and Jetta reviews!

I bought a new ‘18 in the soft top a couple years ago. Got a great deal just before the 2019s started arriving. I’ve owned and daily driven around 12 cars, and this is my favorite ever. I liked the RF, but it was $2-3K US more expensive, plus I’ve read the wind buffeting on the highway is bad. You guys are spot-on with most of your review. I can wind this thing up in 2nd and even 3rd gear and. It be at go-straight-to-jail speeds, and that’s just an absolute blast!!
The only thing I’d disagree with is your remark about the grey color. The soul red is the best color, but my grey car was the last Miata on the lot, and I really dig the color. It’s like a liquid silver, not the kind of sparkly grey Mazda made in years past.

At 6'4", I have two options in this car: have enough leg-space to use the pedals OR move the seat forward and tilt it back enough to see out the windshield. Unfortunately you need BOTH to drive safely.
So wishing to be taller is not all it's cracked up to be? Is it hard to get comfortable in most vehicles? I'm only 5'9"
The world is designed for 5'9" people like you, you have the ergonomic advantage. That said, people do look up to me... It's easy to get comfortable in most vehicles, this Mazda is an exception. I drive a Honda Fit (no seat height adjustment) and am very comfortable. I also fit comfortably in a Fiat 500.

But with reference to the blind spot issue, it DOES have one....
You reversed until you couldn't see the car in your mirror, and then looked left. All you could see out of the corner of your eye, was the front bumper and half the bonnet (hood) if you were lucky. You still couldn't see the area between the bonnet and the rear of the car, which would be enough of a blind spot to loose a motorcycle in!!!!!

i’d love to see what Ford could do with a roadster based on the Fiesta. sure, it’d be front-drive, but they’ve done amazing things with the ST Fiesta and Focus.. i think they could make it work. FWD ain’t what it used to be.
I've test driven everything up to $70,000 and keep coming back to this car. When they offer the Recaro seats in the RF I will be a buyer.

Yuri Tereshyn honestly I read it in an old Car and Driver magazine 7 years ago, it was an article about how they teach drivers in Germany vs North America, and one of the biggest differences is No shoulder checks in Germany but instead Setting your mirrors correctly to eliminate blind spots. Unfortunately our driving school standards in Canada are lagging behind
