Remembering when this model first came out in 1989, the auto press had a cargasm. Here was a roadster that captured the charm and fun of the old European roadsters from the days of old but with reliable Japanese mechanicals and modern tech. In the old days, you could not drive a classic roadster 50 miles without spare parts, a rosary bead and a prayer book. The miata was the car that saved the open roadster from near extinction.
Yes and 30 years later the Miata continues to be the only affordable roadster. (The Fiat version doesn’t count.) To put it another way, without Mazda, there would be no modern affordable roadster.
Well the British hated it. They thought it was a ugly Japanese initiation of their British roadster. Google the top gear reactions to the car, it does not age well lol
@@johntechwriter Some would say S2000, the mentioned MR2 and second hand Z3 and Z4 and probably the TT.
@@matthiasschuster9505 Only Z4 and TT are available today and they are not comparable. Neither offers a manual transmission.

This is the exact color I bought on my 2019 MX-5 RF Eternal Blue. I cannot fault anything on it. Before I bought it I did my research and every person that reviewed it said "This Car puts a SMILE on your Face". I'm still smiling.. :)

Wow, kudos Sarah for a very fair and fun review of the admittedly less fun auto version - for those who just need an auto, this tells them what they need to know. And - no other reviewer that I have seen mentioned the more aggressive final drive....! Garage science indeed....

The Auto in sport mode on tight twisty hilly roads is outstanding. As a daily driver its a very easy car to kick around..I doubt I would go back to a manual after owning this car..
This is my dilemma. It’ll be my daily car and i drive on highways with traffic and not just twisty roads on the weekend so idk what to do. I don’t want the auto to sap all the fun

Always enjoy your reviews. Please don’t stop doing what you do in the way that you do it! Thanks for the seat adjustment section, I’m 186cm and like it low down and tipped back, so might have trouble fitting in. Does the steering wheel adjust for rake & reach? The joy of NA engines is chasing that top end pull, something that an auto box can spoil, so glad to hear that it let you have fun. Gotta love maintaining momentum!
All Miatas come with a telescoping wheel now, starting in ‘19.

Mazda auto transmissions, despite only having 6spds are very good, one of the quickest shifting torque converter autos around by far. Proving that more gears are neither necessary or more fun. That said, your right, the 6spd manual would always be my choice as well. Outstanding review of a legendary automobile.

I have a 2017 rf launch edition with a 6mt... Even though its the 155hp version im going to keep this car forever. It handles incredible, is quicker than most cars and i get almost 40mpg on the highway. I love this car. The redish nappa leather is beautiful too with the machine gray metallic paint color. Next upgrades i get for it will be a posi and an edelbrock supercharger so it reminds me more of my old 2004 mazdaspeed mx-5.
That first section of winding road was like a clip from car and driver haha that was awesome!
I have the Abarth 124 and I’m 5’11” and love the fit of the car - except when my wife drives it and I forget to reset the seat before getting in and then it is torture getting in. I was looking at the RF when I bought the Abarth, the Miata is nice but I felt like the Abarth just suited me better.

Mauricio Starosta 2020 club owner. Brembo bbs Recaro. Previous 2004 Mazdaspeed owner. I wish I bought the auto. Paddle shift not that bad. The car has no torque, Needs an auto. Constantly shifting. Wear your ass out. Drove both. Test drive was fun with stick. Real world and traffic and stop signs. Auto is better. Car needs a turbo. More torque. Probably sell it. Buy another corvette. Mazda needs to be be around 250 -300 hp. To be a 21st century car. Like my old Mazdaspeed better. Just my opinion

I'd like to see a comparison with the conventional convertible one. It is supposed to be lighter but maybe not as rigid. Which is faster?

Had a nd1 RF and swapped to nd2 softtop.. dropping 110lb really makes a difference in acceleration feel, as well as less wind noise with roof down. Considering I roll w roof down nearly all the time (weather permitting) I just use a bucket of sunblock and a boonie cap in a feeble attempt to not die of skin cancer... totally worth it :D
Aurora design makes a seat drop kit now that brings the seat 1.5" down. I'm 5'9" so I fit in pretty much everything, but I'm eyeballing that drop kit since I'd rather feel like I'm in the car vs on it. I imagine its a game changer for anyone over 5'10.
Nice bit of info on the soft vs RF. I'll try both, but already leaning towards the soft top! Did you end up doing lowering brackets? How was it?

C'mon Sarah Kilmer your in Phoenix Arizona those seat warmers will cook your arse to well done. I like mine rare ! That is why my 2016 Club does not have any seat warmers. Their cloth too so any butt sweat will be lovingly soaked up in them. I thought my trunk was small but you once again proved to me just how big a ND trunk really is TY !
Sarah, could I use the EVILTO Garden Hose Nozzle, High-Pressure Hose Spray Nozzle 8 Way Spray Pattern with 3.5oz/100cc Soap Dispenser Bottle Snow Foam Gun for Watering Plants, Lawn, Patio, Car Wash on Amazon? I only have one arm I don't think I can use a pressure washer. Keep making those vids I love them. PS I just got my dream car 2011 Sport MX-5 and I love it.
I bought the automatic RF in 2016... Never again. I hated myself after 6 months and 3 months later I was at the dealership to negotiate a trade. They agreed and with only a minor loss I bought a softtop manual (2000cc) and now life is shiny again...

Alexander Huang the automatic. This car is meant to be driven with a manual transmission. It's 1 of the best manuals you can get in a car. The RF is not bad, in fact I'd love if Mazda made a coupe! The car just excudes driving pleasure.

@@BemelGaming I would love the manual. But I live in southern California where traffic is constantly bumper to bumper. I would get so frustrated having to stay in 1st and 2nd gear. With automatic I can just rev and brake as much as I want.

I can even sit behind myself in a BRZ, 911, and a LC500; imagine that. Great color on the Miata; glad it wasn't the stupid Soul Red.
That is one of the best modern engines bays I’ve seen. Such little plastic compared to most other cars.

i have the 6 speed manual and the GTS package, I love it. I did some changes like the side lights i replaced them with led smoked linzens, the rear and side turns singles are lid respeccing. the center brake light wrapped flashes if I brake hard. and last I had it Protected

Looks nice! Glad you found another person to help out. I have never understood.though why they dont offer a higher end trim with more power and/or a turbo. I also dont understand the current asking price. It seems like it shouldn't be more than 25k.
I kinda get they are going for a car that you can actually use all the power it has and throw it around safely.......but I dunno everyone claims how much they miss the S2000.....to me it seems like Mazda could snag that audience by just adding a turbo.
How much power do you think the car could handle before it starts to drive like a different animal? For me though it might not matter. I'm 6 ft 2 so seeing you get in it......yea I get kinda claustrophobic just looking at it. Standing near one of the older ones it seems like i would be able to lift it off the ground by myself. I'm looking at the new Mazda3 pretty hard though for real.

Thank you Sarah so funny, amazed you could fit in the boot. Yup not easy being tall, banging your knees of the dashboard before you can get the seat back. Or if its high end model the seat automatically goes to the last users settings when you ignition on and you get crushed against the steering wheel. The MX5 tyres do look very narrow when compared to other cars in that sector, though didn't seem to effect its handling during your test drive,
