    Thank you so much for posting this video! I am a veterinary student and there was a technical issue in recording the lecture on patellar luxation so I have the notes but am unable to look at the gait videos, thank you for showing us Hank's gait! The slowed down videos were particularly helpful too, when you're not used to seeing abnormalities slowing it down really helps to visualize it. I hope Hank continued to have a good life after surgery, you're clearly a very attentive and caring owner for looking after him so closely!

    This video was so helpful. I had noticed my mini poodle circle her left hind leg out when running sometimes too. My agility instructor said it was similar to a gait that another poodle she trains had who had recently been diagnosed with Patella Luxation. This video inspired me to take a video of my poodle and show the vet.
    Thankfully we’re catching it early. Videos like this will help others too. Thank you.

      @@Jimbo0o617 I am due to have the vet check her out soon (I was waiting until her due checkup to cover it then). I’m quite practical about it though so it means I’m not getting anxious about it. I figure it’s quite a common issue and subsequently a very common and straight forward procedure. Catching it early when they’re young like we have with ours is the best possible time really. Less risk during surgery, high chance of fast and uncomplicated recovery. I intend to do agility with my girl competitively so will be getting this sorted as soon as diagnosis is made (pending vet recommendations of course).

    Thank you for the video series! Our 8 year old collie mix is having the surgery in both knees next week. One is grade 3 and other grade 4. He limps all the time but shows no sign of pain. He can still jump up and down on the bed and does walk up stairs ok but much slower than before. We weren't sure about getting both done at the same time. After watching your series, it looked like one knee would be a handful and now with both knees we can only imagine how incapacitated he will be :(

    VMD here. To all small breed owners I would not recommend surgery unless your pup is in obvious pain and or his quality of life is diminished. Try homeopathic treatments, keep their weight in proper proportion. Also exercise is the best thing. Walking, walking, walking. Also do a little incline walking. Anyone with questions feel free to respond. Again with small breeds only as a last resort...thank you !!

      Thank you! I would love to hear your experience. Obviously, I made the decision to move forward with the surgery, but I was looking for alternate therapies vs surgery and wished this discussion was out there :) So please feel free to share your knowledge and experience. I'm sure others could benefit from this discussion. Hank is great today (4 years post surgery). It wasn't easy, but he is back 100% happy and healthy. We got thru it and learned along the way. I decided to share my experience (12 weekly videos post surgery) so others could see first hand life following surgery. I do hope to help others with this difficult decision.

      Denying your pet its rightful surgery is malicious. You shouldn't be allowed to own a pet.

    • @divfae2792

      Pets should never have to undergo surgery due to the exorbitant costs associated with it. In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards offering surgical procedures for pets as the standards of care continue to improve rapidly. However, it's important to remember that surgery is not a common occurrence in the wild for animals. Just because dogs are domesticated and cherished by their owners, it shouldn't mean that individuals are obligated to deplete their savings to provide for their beloved pets.

    No THANK YOU! Recently my 12 yr old cockapoo (bout 15 lbs) has been exhibiting odd behavior in her back legs not related to her IVDD. Vet mentioned luxating patella when i mentioned her picking up her hind leg, however he didnt see the weird way she sits sometimes (kinda similar to the way your pup is sitting in the screenshot) and i noticed the other day it looked like her foot somehow turned in...?
    I've googled and googled and googled with mixed results, RELIEVED to have found the answer but worried bout if she actually needs surgery now.

    I wish you luck with your dog's surgery. My advice... Clear your schedule for the following 3 days post surgery. It will be an intense 3 days, but there are blue skies beyond it. They say 9 weeks recovery, and yes, Hank is doing great at his 10 week mark, but I am planning for one year till full recovery and until he can be his crazy self again. Good luck to you. Let me know if you have any questions. Courtney

    Thank you so much for sharing this video. Zoey is a 1 yr old Cavapoo 13 lbs. She jumped from the front seat of our suv April 8 and has since intermittently been lifting her right hind leg. Since we split time between Florida and NY Zoey has 2 vets. The vet in Fla.(April) said it seems like a grade 2 and did not recommend surgery. Since returning to NY and going to her home vet (May) he referred us to a orthopedic surgeon who not surprisingly recommended surgery. I am so confused Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. I cant say that she is walking like Hank Hope we are doing the right thing for her.

      Hey, so sorry ur dog had to go through that. Mine jumped off the couch, and we brought her to the vet after 2 more dislocations (she never had trouble before, albeit being born with Luxating patella). They diagnosed her with grade 4 but she basically shows no signs of pain. We re not sure what to do since we heard complications were very common, a lot requiring resurgery which we want to avoid. Could u share ur story on ur dogs surgery and if there were any complications?

      Jen Penso I did not notice it when hank was a puppy. In fact his first vet visit was negative for patella issues (had to have a negative test to obtain pet insurance). I believe hanks patella issue was an injury, as he only had it in one knee.

    I'm hoping my 8 month old chi mix doesn't need the surgery but I'm thinking its in our future, she has been favoring her leg more and more, and while it doesn't stop her from doing anything and she's super happy I still worry about that leg! How is he doing since the surgery?

    • @courtneyklocke1744
      @courtneyklocke1744  8 років тому

      +Katrina Elise - Hank is fabulous! I can't believe the recovery! When you're pre and post surgery, your mind can't believe they will ever be back to normal. But with a lot of care and attention to rehab, they make it through. I won't lie. It's a TON of work the first couple months. I had the opportunity to lessen my schedule to care for Hank. I'm so glad I was proactive with this and scheduled his surgery when it worked for us to give him the very best after care. I have many friends who hold off on the corrective surgery and ended up in the emergency vet for a torn ACL down the road. With my crazy schedule now, I would never be able to fit an unplanned surgery/after care in. Hank is stronger than before surgery. His back legs actually have muscle now and he relies on them for his activity. Good luck with your decision. It's not easy! I posted a video of Hank each week post surgery if you want to know what to expect. I think there are a total of 11 videos. Worth your time to know what's to come with the surgery. Courtney K

    • @courtneyklocke1744
      @courtneyklocke1744  8 років тому

      +Tiffany Kelly - Hank didn't seem in pain. He yelped one time when playing with another dog, hiked his foot up, set it down and continued to play. This only happened once. Otherwise, he showed no signs of (obvious to humans, like yelping) pain. When we would walk he would quickly turn his nose to his back left hip/back area and his knee would buckle in. I think I show this in my video. I believe the misalignment from his knee was revealing itself in his hip area. He has not done that since his recovery. I could also feel his knee cap shifting/popping when he would bend his back left leg. It didn't hurt him, I could just hear it and feel it happening. Your best bet is to see a veterinarian for a diagnosis.

      Hello Sissi, I hope your pup is doing well 2.5 weeks post surgery. I'm glad you found my videos helpful. I hope you could view them in order and they made sense. Sometimes UA-cam doesn't always show them in a nice progressive order :) Hank is fabulous to date! It's been a year and a half now since his surgery and he is more active and confident than ever before! I now think his luxated patella had led to his many insecurities in his young years pre-surgery. I don't think he had the strength and coordination of his back legs and today, after surgery and rehab exercises, he runs across wood floors, leaps and plays with the best of them. We have had no problem with the removal of his pins. I was worried at first, but they were bothering him way too much. I am happy we decided to remove them. Thanks for checking in. Much luck to you with your pup!

    When exactly did you notice that he had issues with the Luxating patella? Also, did he ever just not bear weight on his leg at all when you took walks. My 2 (almost 3) year old Boston Terrier recently had came from a sitter and I noticed he wasn't putting weight on his left leg, it was just kinda of there. So When I bend his knee you can feel like a popping like it is out of place. Did you feel that way Hank at all?

    • @courtneyklocke1744
      @courtneyklocke1744  7 років тому

      Hello Mikelle. Hank did a lot of skipping and hopping during our walks. So he would skip a step on that leg a lot or hop with both legs, probably trying to take pressure off of his knee. However, he did not hold his leg up for long periods of time during our walks. I think that is what you were asking? We could feel his knee cap (patella) move around every time we would bend his knee. His knee would also buckle on our walks every now and then. I am still in disbelief that our surgery went so well and he is as stable as a rock now! We did a lot of research on the very best surgeon in our area and made sure the surgeon we chose had the best physical therapy immediately afterwards. I'm so happy we committed to this process. It pays off in the end. Hank is stronger and happier than ever! Good Luck to you!

    Did you find this on an X-ray or MRI?

    • @fearsomefiredragon522
      @fearsomefiredragon522 9 місяців тому

      Veterinary student currently learning about patellar luxations, you can usually see this on whole leg x-rays or CT (which is basically just a series of x-rays in slices), no need for MRI. However, depending on the grade it can sometimes look normal, especially since grade 1 and 2 luxations mean that the patella is still often in its normal place, grade 1 tends to not slip out at all unless the patella is pushed (such as in a physical exam), and grade 2 it can slip as little as once a month or as often as several times a day. A gait in a grade 2 dog can start normal, and then the patella can luxate mid-walk and dog can start to skip and hold up the luxated leg, and then the patella will slip back in place and the gait looks normal again. So, if the x-ray was taken while it is in place it will look normal. Since Hank is a grade 3, the patella is dislocated more often than not and it is likely that it was shown on any x-rays taken, but you can also tell to a degree on physical exam (is it possible for the vet to push the patella out of place or not) and how often the gait is abnormal. As Courtney said in the video, Hank does not show that abnormal gate all the time, only about half the time.
