Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
I had gotten a baby Rottweiler when she was 4 months. She was starved, beaten, tased, and had Parvo. When we got her back to health, she was so unruly. With your help, I swear she is so amazing now. She is almost 2 and in great health. I work for a large pet corporation and when I talk to pet parents who are having issues, I send them to your videos. You are so amazing. You have taught us so much

I’m definitely one of them I’m a first dog parent and I have a American bully living im a apartment and I always wondered why he couldn’t never stay still or he distracted
@@shealasha4929 Mental stimulation is also equally important as Physical exercise ! A lot of ppl will “walk” their dog and consider that to be the “only” exercise a dog “needs” but dogs require more than that! So make sure to keep his mind busy too’! Weather it’s toys… interactive
Toys.. ( like Puzzles, kongs, etc), Trainning sessions which the dogs need to use their brains to think of what it is u want of them, etc!
My hearts breaks to see how abused he looks. I am soo happy he was very fortunate to be in your care. Your so amazing. I love your heart for these abused animals and the passion for canines. Most of all, the patience to deal with the "pet-parent" who needs 99.5 % of the training.

Regarding crate training, I wish to underscore the supreme importance of “calm leadership from a place of love.” You MUST NOT BE ANGRY when putting your dog into the crate, though you may be frustrated. Time-outs must always be an opportunity for your dog to CHILL OUT; the crate must not be seen as a punishment but, rather, a sanctuary! I achieved this for my dog by keeping the crate well cushioned, always open when vacant, and always stocked with treats that I had surreptitiously planted there. I also made a habit of depositing my dog’s favorite toys in there whenever I found them lying around elsewhere and unattended. Location of the crate may also play a role. Some dogs may exist who want some privacy when chilling out, but most are probably very social, like my “party girl” who wants to be “up in the mix” even when she could use a nap. As such, her crate was not in a back room but, instead, in a high-traffic living space. You’ll know you’re doing crate training right-meaning, in such a way that your dog accepts it as a sanctuary-when they go into the crate without prompting, just to chill out and relax.
Learning that becoming frustrated doesn't mean you become angry is the very definition of controlling one's emotions. I noticed how worked up I became when becoming frustrated and then realised I'm the issue and not the pooch. Then you learn it's basically the same with humans.
Yes, I was just explaining to my daughter how extremely sensitive to our moods that dogs are and that conflict between us effects them. Just like before her father and I parted ways so she totally understood that. She had been getting overwhelmed by her 11 month old Labrador male and using the harsh punishment style of dog training, of which I completely disagree and find very upsetting myself. All this accomplished was that our dogs (two small Yorkies too) would run to me and hide behind me when she would enter the room angry. I finally watched this video and she has totally agreed that it makes complete sense and has had immediate benefits and results already.

When we got our last dog, my boys were young. 4 and 6…. I told them “when Benson is in his ‘house’, (door open napping or whatever) you do not go in there to get him out. You can call him, then it’s his choice, but that’s his safe place”. They understood, did that, and worked very well w 2 rambunctious little boys always excited to see their dog.
I’ve only ever posted like 5 UA-cam comments ever but this deserves one. Easily the best info any new dog owner can get in one simple video. My shepherd husky was a menace when she was younger until I started doing everything you talked about, including other training methods such as leash pressure/heeling/focus/recall- (touch). She is an absolute angel now and the dog I dreamed of having. Ppl underestimate the basic needs of a dog and what It can do to help mold them. Great video

I’m not a professional but it’s good to see and hear someone officially advocate for some of the principles I have used for years. In preparation for the day he might have lost his hearing, I even trained my dog to come when extending my arms like you are showing. Sadly he succumbed to heamangiosarcoma a year ago at the age of 10. If/when I get another dog, I’ll be looking to your channel for guidance.

I take my 3 niece and nephew dogs for a walk together every morning. Three different ages, breeds, personalities. In the 3 weeks that I've been watching your videos, we have made such progress that I cannot even believe the difference. And I have zero previous experience with dogs. And I'm not even their main gateway to their food and shelter. The very anxious dog seems so much happier and more relaxed as she loves the structure. We've gone from 2 super leash pullers that were hurting my back and no following of commands to delightful walks, heeling all the way, sitting and staying off leash, all three sitting simultaneously at the edge of the road and every other threshold area... and more. Truly life changing!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I started threshold training only a week ago. She already knew sit and wait, just not in the context of crossing thresholds. She learned what was required instantly. I cannot tell you how much calmer and better behaved she is. It has been miraculous. She’s a 3 yr old working cocker. My dog trainer was very impressed, saying it is something many dogs really struggle with. I can’t recommend it enough.
I got a rescue puppy last year, this is one of the things I never forget to do daily. When we leave and we come back home he knows he needs to sit/lay down and wait for the door to be opened, and then for him to be invited to leave or to enter. This changed absolutely everything!! everyone sees him waiting in there and are amazed on how "well behaved" our dog is. We still have a lot of areas of improvement but this threshold training is a really good practice.

Tiring my border collie out is actually easy. Patience and just having fun is everything to us. We train everything every day over 5-15 min sessions through out the day. Currently, we are working on heel training (it always spooks me just how quickly he absorbs proper instructions). Having him work for his meals is probably the best thing I've ever done for him.

Border collies are Legit THE smartest dogs out there!!! They can lead up to Hundreds of commands/tricks!!! They are HIGHLY motivated and loyal and are also Working dogs! So continue those sessions even as he gets older cuz they Need a Lot of mental and physical stimulation ! agility is an excellent outlet for them! It’s also an excellent bonding experience as well! I highly recommend that! ❤

I been training dogs since my first puppy my parents got me when I was old enough to understand responsibility around 8, she was a German shepherd, our 5th, we all got one, and to this day I learn something new often, and I like this channel.
Yes love the threshold exercise, great reminder. I'm a petsitter and have a 80 pound St Bernard who is a leash puller and reactive to other animals. food motivated, have my treat pouch. I have been practicing for 1 week. eye contact, calm and empowered, what a huge difference! 🙏

I really appreciate how in depth you go with everything. I got a 4 month old cane corso and we’re following your lead in steps through training. She’s doing so well already even at so young.
Thank you for being a responsible Cane Corso owner. People don't understand that this breed needs structured loving leadership. I feel like people just use them "for protection" without obedience and it gives this lovely breed a bad name.

One of the best decisions we made was to only socialise our puppy with well rounded adults, and now at two years old our dog is very well behaved. Look for positive examples and try to avoid negative interactions.

I have an 18 month old female Corso (got her at 10 weeks) and she can be a challenge at times but so easy to train especially with the method Will is mentioning here about the whole day food and feeding. She is so busy and we compete in several sports to satisfy her mental and physical needs.
I've had a few behavioral issues that I've been working through with my puppy and it's been hard not to feel frustrated and not be calm. Doing better with keeping calm, not just acting calm but working to actually be calmer has been really helpful. It's what I think about every time you throw your line about calm, consistent leadership.
I knowwww, I've been struggling with potty training with a rescue puppy and with leash pulling on my older dog since he has been showing an attitude since the new puppy arrived. Slowly making progress, Hope you and your pup find success soon as well and hope we humans become calmer, I guess they train us as much as we do them

I have grown up around dogs and dog training most of my life, mainly in the field retriever discipline. I have seen many training videos and programs and just wanted to say that this video was awesome! You hit all of the foundational elements of a good program, for field or home. I volunteered for 8 eight years at the Adelaide RSPCA shelter. So many people have a misconception on how difficult & dangerous shelter dogs are. It's exhausting trying to explain to them how things really are. I'm doing a dog behaviourist cert now & I want to become a qualified trainer to help people understand their dogs & in turn help the dogs! They need good humans like you! Thanks for your videos!! What a relief to find such a useful trainer! We got into trouble with animal control because Loch actually broke his choke collar and nipped a woman on her finger. She called animal control. My boy is a rescue and we went through trainings all the way to training to be a Sevice dog but during that training he became over protective and the trainer said he cannot be a service dog because he has bitten and lunges qt people

I’ve never heard of the food pouch thing before but my dog is VERY food motivated so I want to give it a try and it’s working already after 2 days!! She can pull me off my feet sometimes and even sprained my wrist once. Glad to be getting a handle on this

It is truly amazing the relationship between dog and man, i think in a sense it comes down to the dog finding a sense of security in YOU the companion. If you give a dog the effort and the reassurance and the security that dog will love you harder than you could ever imagine. I am working on my relationship with my lab puppy and i cant imagine how much it will hurt when she is gone. Cheers mate.

Rescued a 120lb Golden Saint (about 4 years old) here in Nepal last year, and I've been doing all of this with so much success. I was worried at first (he's a bit of a Cujo) but I've gotten so much confidence just by watching vids like this. thx
Great content man, covering in-depth every aspect . Every dog owner (and future ones too!) should have those rules in mind, it gives a big amount of control over various life situations with your dog, which reduces any anxiety or stress in a dog & owner - you will not be fearful that your dog will badly behave, and dog will not be stressed by new situations. Win-win scenario for every one!
Also when you have a puppy, remember about behavioral changes that will happen (from puppy to adult dog) - don't give up and stick to those 5 rules, it will help you a lot!

All the things he saids is 100% true I’ve done this for 50 years create training, and all the other trainings that he’s shown here is highly recommended and a good hard exercise before you leave anywhere keep some in common mind.

I just found your channel, and I'm so glad I did. I have a high anxiety 1 yr old ausie kelpie/ausie shepherd mix, she is a rescue and was severely abused in her early puppy days and left to fend for herself in the heat of the summer in Washington. We took her in and I've been working on her anxiety and security, but she still has a lot of chaos in her behavior. Like a light switch, she goes from playful to aggressively protective. We can't really take her out and about like we''d like to because she is afraid of EVERYONE that's not part of the house. When we have guests, she spends the time cowering for the first few hours, and then skirting around them the rest of the time. I'd love to get her to a point of confidence and trust where I can register her as a support animal.

Just found your channel a few minutes ago. Eatched this episode & repeated. I've fostered 2 deaf dogs in my longago past: think they turned out well. I got their attention by, among other means, stomping on the floor or ground. They felt it and turned for instruction. Years later, I need knee surgery. I'll bet Mr. Atherton has a better way. He already has me captivated.

@@bethrivera867 still working on it. She's got so much better, but still barks defensively at new people. Today we are doing some food motivation training with her in public.
Having learned to walk down steps to the side so a dog who goes like a missile, I am so proud to have taught my new rescue kelpie his thrshold manners. Even with the cat hissing behind him he will sit so I can leave the room first. I feel much safer moving around with him. Thanks so much.

Recently, I've been helping my mom train her new dog. She's a 4 year old pitboxer mix. Lots of energy and all muscle! She's extremely sweet and very smart, but just doesn't seem to understand that my mom and the other older dog don't appreciate getting bumped every time they go through the doorway.
Gunna try these exercises with her, wish us luck! :)
Nice video. This techniques really work. I use them on my doberman everyday and he is starting to be a wonderful canine companion that looks at me for guidance. At the beginning it may be a bit tedious to do the exercises but once you get used to it, you just start doing it naturally.

We have 2 x 10 yr old Ridgeback sisters and have just adopted a young Ridgeback/Lurcher X. We have always applied these training exercises with the Ridgebacks and they are now proving to be great teachers for the young pup (approx 10 months old). We still train and reward the girls at their age with recall when out walking, obedience training, manage thresholds, etc and we are walking the pup off his lead after having him with us just 4 days. Having said that, this video is a great reminder especially for understanding the dog's perspective. Thanks Will!

I was getting scared of him. We started your boot camp last Saturday and I haven't been bitten since. Thank you so much for all your videos. Love these tips! I exercise threshold manners when leaving the house, but I see I can implement it at any opportunity with benefit. I also do the first 4 of your basic commands (mostly successful.. x'D), but I should put more effort into recall and place commands :)

May you please share more tips and tricks for doggies that are hard of hearing/partially hard of hearing? Also how do you recommend preparing guests and family so that they can avoid things like startling your pet? This happened yesterday while having a BBQ. I suspect her nose was overwhelmed so my friend appearing in front of her really freaked her out. This question is for my friend's rescue, she's a chihuahua mix with a really lovely temperament, just clearly she is partially or fully deaf.
Dogs that are deaf are going to be more aware of their surroundings than we give them credit( how is the dog’s vision though?) , I’m a dog trainer myself but I’ve not had the experience of working with a dead dog.. But I have seen quite a few owners of dead dogs use all kinds of GENTLE approaches like… softly blowing on them to wake them up and to let them know they are there, using lights ( as in Actualy blinking the lights on and off when they get home to alert the dog, etc).but things are always going to be a lot
More challenging with chihuahuas due to their sheer size! I’d recommend just always keeping them at close range as they are gonna want to feel
Protected and safe as much as possible especialy due to their fragility… and they are going to depend on their owner more and more as they age too… ! I don’t usualy recommend “ baby-ing” a dog… but if there’s any dog than can be the exception to that rule it’s def a chihuahua … and a blind one at that! Just treat him like the precious and Fragile thing that he is! And make sure to just communicate with everyone around about his new dissability and that they need to be careful when approaching him, and if they want to come approach and say hi, to not “jump” or make any “sudden movements “ in front of him to not startle him and to just be gentle and Overly Aware !
