The Truth About Van Life As A Poor Working Senior At 75

  • I have done many many videos on van life and seniors living as nomads in rvs, cars, and in other alternative living situations. Many of those seniors are doing so by choice and love the freedom the lifestyle offers. Many others are forced to move into vehicles because they are living on meager fixed social incomes. Some like Lindy in this video have adapted and if given the chance to move back to a traditional housing situation would choose to remain as nomads.
But, every senior I have encountered living on a very limited income faces enormous challenges and in this video and in future videos I will be sharing some of those challenges and the bravery of these seniors. They are at a time in life where they have spent years contributing to society but seem to have been cast aside in many instances to fend for themselves caught up in senseless bureaucratic mazes that make their lives even more difficult. I know many of my viewers are very familiar with these challenges as you are seniors in similar circumstances. I would love to hear your remarks and opinions.
If you would like to support Lindy there is an easy way to do it. Just go over to her UA-cam channel,
L.A.V.A. Lindy's Awesome Van Adventures, and subscribe. You can run her playlist of videos and like each of her videos. This will help her to become monetized on her UA-cam channel.
****I will be having a meetup in Quartzsite, Arizona
January 18 - 21. We will be meeting from 4pm on the 18th to 20th and from dusk on the 21st for my 70th Birthday Bash. Hopefully, Lindy will be on a panel during the meetup if you would.like to meet her.

If we gave nothing to other countries we would still have the problem of not building housing for our folks. We actually give very little of our federal budget to other countries for foreign aid. That's not why we don't take care of our folks. We simply don't prioritize housing for all. Only 1/4 of all those eligible for housing vouchers can get them - because the federal government simply doesn't budget for the amount needed for all who qualify! Heartless.

When I was a senior in high school back in 1980 I always knew I would need a place to live. I had been working summer jobs throughout my high school years and saved every dime I made. I bought a used mobile home for $1,250. I was out looking for a place to move it to and came across an empty acre of land in the country. I went to the courthouse to find out who the land belonged to and the owner just happened to be our judge. He had forgotten that he owned the property. He sold it to me for $2,500 That was 43 years ago. I haven't paid rent in 43 years now. I dont have any landlords, banks, or rules to answer to. I have kept my trailer up very well through out my life alway making repairs if needed. I'm 61 now and retired after welding for the same company for 30 years. I am so grateful of the decisions I made while I was young.😊

I stockpile food too because I was a single mom and it wasn't stable. I made $200/month too much but I was going through a custody battle not receiving support. I had $15/wk for groceries and my toddler's diapers. I washed clothes in the tub and hung them on the shower rod for five months. I bought a share through a food coop $15 for $30 of food, though the meat was frozen and expired. Plus I had to work two hrs a month to be in the program. The free clinic here where I live gives food out to any resident of the city and they ask how many people in your family so they increase it per family member. You can go twice a month. It's a really great provider for the community. When I was on short term disability for my hip and then surgery/recovery, I utilized them for me and my husband.

The social worker didn't say it was "great." She said she is better off living in her van. That appears to be the case ----she told the truth.
      >
You don't need a toilet, shower or kitchen. They are conveniences, not necessities. There is really no suggestion that she isn't managing reasonably.
At age 74, I use a wood stove to heat my house rather than turn on my gas furnace. I can get srcrap wood for free. I sleep in a sleeping bag and the temperature can get down to forty when the fire goes out at night. But it's not a hardship ---it's my PREFERRED lifestyle.
On the coldest day of winter in Seattle this past winter (+15F or so), I had a nock on my door at midnight. A woman at my door BEGGED me to let her stay in my home that night, and I agreed She was wrapped in blankets from head to toe. Now THERE was a woman who was living "in the elements."
But this woman was doing well enough from what I can see. Her only real complaint was cold winter temperatures, but we don't know where she lives. In many areas (mine included- Seattle) living in a van is safe to do as far as temperatures go,
This woman had a LIFETIME to save money to protect herself in old age. She didn't do it. Even so, she is doing OK in my view.

She is right about being better off in the van and here is why. I am a senior now and I got into an independent living situation for 52 and older. It was marvelous or so I thought. NOT. It was supposed to be for market rate residents. I felt as though I was rewarded for all my years of work finally. NOT. They started moving in all kinds of people that were on assistance. Not to say that all people on assistance are druggies or filthy but the neighbor I had was. They ignored my pleas to help, lied to me, gaslighted me and told me they did not smell anything when they were standing in the stink. He would scream all night after his meth binges, my apartment was not habitable. I thought I was going to die. 2 very elderly ladies across the hall did die. The duct work was inter connected so there was no way to stop it. There were roaches, and bed bugs in some of the apartments, and the carpet was molded in the hall ways. They locked up the AC box in the hallways to save money so the molded carpet got worse. When a friend took me out I could hardly walk. I was sick for over a week. Could not eat. The place was not owned by the city housing authority but it was managed by it. They pulled up the pool. The day room ceiling was falling in. And you know what, they got away with it because no one came to check up on their elder family or check out the place and they KNEW this. So they did whatever they wanted. I went to the Head of the housing authority and she did nothing. She wrote me and intimidating letter. I realized that the building was owned by city investors, lawyers, doctors, etc. They were all in bed with each other. We were simply a tax write off. I went to the mayor, had an appointment, but when I got there, he was sick and could not see me. So even after I left, and lost all my furniture, I still cared about the people there, I called the state health department. I knew any complaints to the city would be laughed at. But not the state. They health department went in and pulled that guy out and they had to redo his whole apartment. Yahoo!! It would have been cheaper to just enforce the rules. Yep. It was unfortunately too late for the 2 ladies who died. Thank God, I got out or I would be dead too. Meth causes your blood pressure to go up and can cause a heart attack or stroke especially in the elderly. I lost my stuff but I got out alive. So even in places that are supposed to be good for elders, there is stuff going on. Not good. Please check on you elders. We are to honor our father and mother. No where in that command does it say honor your perfect mother and father.

I am sorry to hear you are going through this. I fixed up my SUV for camping but ended up escaping from the next place, a room I was renting. It was terrible and my thyroid swelled up. But thank God all I had to do was jump in my Ford Escape and escape. I had already also prepared for my pet guinea pig in there to. I went to a campground where I had electricity. And water hookups. It had a nice bath house. I had a hot spot on my phone for internet to run on my 32 inch big screen which separated the back from the front. When I pulled into a spot. Two other campers immediately saw I only had a small pop up tent that I had bought to house my electric scooter. It had to come out cause it took too much space. They put me up a big tent they had for me to go back and get what I could of my stuff and store it. Campers always are so friendly. I enjoyed that time. I think my guinea did too. I had a stand up portable AC with the exhaust running out the window. I was comfortable. Since I am alone in life, I try to think in advance. I am going bug it out again just in case. I just bought another portable ac. Was thinking yesterday to get a bug out bag together. Hang in there. There is no shame in t he game of taking care of yourself. Move in silence and do what you have to do.

My Mother raised my brother and I by herself. She never had any retirement money and worked at Walmart Photo Lab along with Social Security to survive. When she wasn’t able to work anymore, my brother and I made up the difference. We took care of everything for her. Eye glasses, prescriptions, clothes, food, utilities, gas, tv, furniture, computer, cellphone, cable and more. Her SS checks just paid her rent in her apartment. Mom wouldn’t have survived without us. It’s so sad how America treats seniors and veterans. I’m glad my brother and I had careers where we could take care of her all the way to the end of her life. She was one of the lucky ones. Mom had family.

And this is also something that our culture is actually rather strange about is that we don't look to our family as much as other cultures. I think that we should help our family. I mean I've helped my mom quite a bit and my daughter helps me and I help her and also my other daughter people should be more family-oriented and help each other. There was a time when older people would always live in the same house as their children. Of course they usually had a big house so maybe that's an issue, but it just seems to me that the other problem is zoning laws that restrict you from doing whatever you want in your yard and you're on your property. Like there should be a way to have a tiny home maybe in a backyard zoning laws are very unfriendly to people sharing property and that needs to change as well.

The Danes have a social law which ensures, among other things, that in addition to a "people's pension" (which, however, is in relation to the amount of personal earnings), certain supplements can be granted for medicine, glasses, dentist, rent subsidy, heating assistance, etc.
It may well be that we are at the top of the tax list, but we get something for the money. In addition, free library, hospital treatment, schools and university are provided to the population.
In order to afford all that, the government has had to choose to limit the number of refugees and immigrants, but provides all the help they can afford for, among other things to Ukraine and certain foreign countries.

I don't know how she does it, for an apartment, cannot qualify for a house loan that would have a lower payment. These are this is an example of some of the rules that need to change. In addition, there should be zoning changes so that there are allowable exceptions. For example, putting a tiny home in a backyard that is large enough, if you have 5 acres you can only have one home on that 5 acres for example. They should change that to two and a half acres. My goal is to do the same. I refuse to depend on my children. I expect ssi to be completely dried up by time I retire. Consider her story a cautionary tale. It's sad, but more importantly. It's usually avoidable. NEVER expect anything from the government or the people around you.

I agree. Planning is the key. I see so many young people without a career and wonder at what point will they want to retire and have nothing to use to do so. It is not the government's job to take care of you. Otherwise taxes will be outrageous. I worked with someone (both in our 40's) and she had had her own business for years prior, but paid nothing into social security, didn't save, but relied upon her husband that then left her. She went to a financial planner without any money, no means of retirement income, not even social security and guess she thought he would work wonders for her. She even quit her present job that if she had just stuck it out for 10 years would have had a retirement income and forever health insurance. Was not a smart move. While I am not blaming these seniors I just like you am reiterating how important it is to plan, and be independent, plan for the ups and downs in life and not be one of these seniors. It is sad to see this.

At thirty years old my wife walked away leaving me with two toddlers and no child support That was the end of my retirement chances. I scraped along in poverty until my oldest was in college and youngest went into USMC. Plan was to work on saving for retirement once they were out on their own, but then lost my health and had to go on disability and stay in poverty until today. I am hanging on but everything has been hard for those thirty nine years. We do not do enough for single parents and disabled no matter how much folks complain about Soc Sec. It has been a lifeline since my health broke. I worked two jobs most of my life and started working at twelve. Sometimes the best laid plans don't work out through no fault of your own. Doing the right thing for the kids was hard but they did not ask for that life either. They are there if I need them but they also have their own lives to deal with. I pray I am never a burden on them. Most civilized nations do better for their citizens instead of their billionaires.

My son got help from both me & his girlfriend with raising the kids, but it still wasn't easy. He made many school lunches & dropped them off & picked them up every day before & after school (now the oldest drives to school). He's not the first great single dad out there; I witnessed a couple others while growing up, but I can say that I'm impressed & always have been with men who step up & do a great job raising their kids. Eventually I ended up finding an old rv for rent for $500 plus electric. It's all I can afford in Texas at present. What I remember NOT liking about van life, is the DAILY burden to find somewhere to park my van in a safe place at night and get some needed sleep! Also, I had to find somewhere to park my van during the day in the shade in order to get out and stretch my legs and walk around. Find something to keep myself occupied throughout the day. And so I missed a more stable place to set up my sewing machine to sew and practice my Casio piano, so that ended my adventure and I'm parked here in an RV park and happy for now.

Sometimes it’s more complicated than him just wanting to help. She said he would help but that she was too “independent” (read stubborn). I ran across an elder lady working at a store recently at 75. She said her rents had risen again and she would probably need to ask her daughter if she could have a room in her home. Sometimes the kids have their own family or are barely making bills as it is. Unfortunately, moving a parent in may mean more electricity because they stay cold, another mouth to feed, more water, etc. Perhaps their home is large enough for their family but they’d need something larger (more $ to buy and heat) with another person needing a room. Not to say they might not want to but it may come with real costs to help an older parent. Not to mention, a change in their own family dynamic. How many elderly do you know that can keep from inserting themselves in their children’s business, how they parent, their marriage, their money…..not many. Complex issues for sure. I feel ok sharing these thoughts as my family is currently living this situation with my husband’s mom living with us. It’s hard. Worthwhile but hard.

Hello Kimberly. Honestly hope you don't buy if unfortunately you do need to live in a vehicle. First thing you want to do is insulate the windows. You lose a lot of heat, bring in a lot! Of cold same with summer as outside sun will roast you. So buy reflective. Silver colored insulu. You can cut to perfect window size. Available at lowes and other bb stores it's also good to put down on the floor or along doors if you're living in a car. Is ok for van to . Also if you're living in a bmvan and are in a cooler , northern climate put 1/2- 1 inch plywood on the floors. Carpet on top of you want as it'll keep you more comfortable. If in van remember to cover the back and side doors. Can be done with hardboard insulation. As can roof and side walls. In all insulating a van can be done for about $300/$500. Be. Very careful if you use propane stove for heat. Roll down one window 3 inches. No less . Propane makes moisture so prepare for possible black mold and rust.

Even if I went to a roommate situation, the cheapest I can get is $1k with just the rent, that’s absolutely ridiculous to me. I gotta use housing programs in order to pay the rent, and after they run out I’m back to the road! I’m glad I’m younger, only 22, and have done van life before. I’ve been through all types of homelessness and housing programs since the age of 16, so this is nothing new. One million even 25 years ago was enough to retire on and live comfortably with investments and pensions. Not so anymore, one bad ailment, car accident hospital stay can take all of that away. we are living in a time where corporations run everything and inflation is out of control. There used to be laws and regulations in place where that couldn't happen, they slowly took those away and now, in order to make it, you cannot live alone, work your way through college etc without going into deep debt. there is so much land available that it would be pretty easy to just concrete a large patch and turn it into a parking area. also if water is nearby you could easily set up some type of restroom area. but your big expense is gonna come from security or checking whos actually there because some people will forsure mess it up. look up places like slab city, its a great idea on paper but in practice it becomes even more dangerous especially if you are older or sickly.

People freak out over park and stay. We’re all criminals and addicts and child predators so they don’t want anything like this in their neighborhood. On the flip side… if there were a nice place, the government would have their hands on it

I can relate to you Lindy. I'm from Austin Tx and a 65yr vet disabled and can no longer get SSDI surving on $911 and that's at the new 8.7 increase for 2023 plus $23 for food stamps and live in a 98' Dodge van. It's all a Scam by the higher-ups and to keep us in poverty. I have no family to speak off, but I'm doing the best I can and my Lord Jesus has given me the strength to go on. Unfortunately if you are American, that will never happen. The government is doing its best to eliminate its seniors. On the other hand, it is allowing all other ethnicities to come on in and take full advantage of our medical, educational, housing and welfare systems.
      Its a crying shame.

We have to be careful who we vote on their seat in the government. This is what happened when the wrong people aren't the right one and we see this with our own eyes the corruption going on now we have fight the evil from within to clean out for the good to overcome especially for our children children. The evil is working so hard to take control of our lives that we have no saying anymore then the old people are dumped like trash. Their kids can't afford to take care of them or a home care for them then it goes on and on. They only see MONEY more MONEY to spend on the desire of their heart not the good of the people.

The taxpayers simply cannot be expected to pay more taxes . Just because somebody needs more money doesn’t give anybody the right to have the government forcibly take it from others. We might start with stopping all foreign aid instead of raping paychecks for more money. Those billions going to Ukraine should be given to our own people.

If we cannot determine our own expectations and limitations, what else can I say. We are doomed.
