  • After working for 40 years, Kathleen found herself with no pension and no job, Her age and physical limitations made getting a job very difficult so she took her Social Security. Having only $1000 a month from SS to live on meant the quality of her life would be very low if she tried to continue living in an apartment.
    So she did the only logical thing, she moved into her car and went camping (something she loves)! Best of all, it's not just a trip a year, camping is for the rest of her life! Now she has found a very high quality of life she can actually afford and she's looking forward to the rest of her life as the glorious adventure our lives were meant to be!

    You are saving lives with these videos. Seriously, my friend is in her 70's in ill health and living in her car. Now she is no longer planning her suicide, instead she is planning on getting her car fixed and meeting up in AZ one day. She tells me her depression has lifted and she has a reason to continue living because you are helping provide the "how to do it" at any stage of entry. Please keep up this profound work, especially for older women who are afraid and feeling helpless you are provinding the right level of encouragement and compassion!
    Thanks, she means a lot to me since I have known her since I was a little girl. I had no idea how deeply powerful this would be for her...I was really just preparing myself for her inevitable suicide and praying something would come along to give her hope again with out false prommises or BS "keep positive" messages that fall flat in the end.
    Super kudos!

      vau0807 I think the point is that long before you ever get to the stage Kathleen is at, you should change your situation so that you can afford to save a nest egg. Everyone has the ability to change their destiny and don't let anyone ever tell you different. It seems to me that a lot of people set up their lives the way they want them to be and then figure out a way to pay for it. That seems dumb. Live within your means. Don't be a irresponsible and have a bunch of children that you can't afford. Don't move into a place that you can't afford. Don't open credit card accounts. Blah blah blah. It's called responsibility and accountability. Both of which this lady has. If she can survive the way that she is now then why couldn't she have lived cheaply and saved earlier in life? She could have she just chose not to.

If Kathleen made too much $$ to quality for Medicaid, then she'd have to pay for her child's healthcare. That plus rent can make savings difficult to impossible. 3. The RED setting is for improved night vision, plus it is very relaxing.
    Yes, Bob did address this at the end, but I left it here "just because". Enjoy !

      I think what it's pushing people into is everyone being their own business, the kind of thing that might have been more common in the 18th century. You can't rely on other businesses to be loyal, you have to figure out ways to provide value directly to customers. Gatekeepers are on the way out.

      I agree Ben, I live in Australia, and in the last few years it has become nearly all part time or casual work, and if you earn too much you can't get social security (who I used to work for!!!) but it can be $1,00 over and you are cut off, and then you still can't afford to pay your rent an bills and living expenses. So many underemployed people now who are scraping to make ends meet, yet the stats say % of people are working, and how good as it went up so many %. But that can be someone who only got 2 hours of casual work a week and they call them employed. It is such a rort...most people want to be gainfully employed, but more and more we will see people living out of cars etc. I am only lucky I am at my mothers not paying rent, but having to care for her as she ages, as a nurse I couldn't get enough shifts to pay my high rent and had to give in and move in with her, at her request. Kathleen is a pioneer..hopefully I will be doing that soon, but it's great to see these vids and how people are managing in a more and more money hungry world, where there is a big divide between the haves and the have nots...

      Maria Zlata Geez, Maria, did you listen to the Interview, at all? Or is it that you didn't understand what was being said - what it meant?? Or, have you, perhaps, never worked in the corporate business world? If that's the case, I can understand why their conversation was meaningless to you - why you could not relate to what was being described regarding "hostile takeovers;" "gutting" a company that had experienced a hostile takeover; mergers & acquisitions; buyouts, receiverships, and holding companies, etc. Believe me, Maria, When a well-organized team of "legal thieves" gains control of a company, then guts it of its assets, including it's experienced older employees (whom they then dump); that team is referred to as "Corporate Vultures." encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Vultures

    I didn't plan to watch all of this AND then read a bunch of comments, but I was so struck by this woman's TOTAL LACK of self-pity. And, btw, nothing wrong with feeling a bit of self-pity now and again, but then snap yourself out of it. And, i'm saying this for your OWN sake.
    I'm 65 and things aren't great now, but I've found that one of the great things is that I follow national and international news A LOT, and everyday, I see and hear how SO much tougher the 7 plus billion people on this planet have it. Nothing snaps me out of my self-pity so QUICKLY. Again, for your OWN sake. I remember when I was MUCH younger, I felt sorry for myself a LOT, and when I finally realized it and gave it up, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. (Didn't mean to even bring all this up when I started this about Kathleen, BUT just wanted to pass the word about how WONDERFUL it is when you give up self-pity. Speaking as someone who has been there, too, so not criticizing anyone AT ALL who is experiencing it. It can become a BAD HABIT and totally sap you of energy and hope).

    Thanks for the video Bob. I too only get $1000 a month on social security and got laid off from an electronics computer manufacturer. Our work was sent to China and Mexico under the Talf-Hartley trade agreement.....shame. I live with a friend now as I can't afford rent. Also companies don't want to hire older workers.

    I worked til 72. Retired from my job. I sold my acreage and home to pay off all my bills. My truck, a bit on my home, credit cards (were the killer). I bought a 5th wheel. but I am fixing up an 8x12 "cottage" to live in and selling 5th wheel so I can have money in bank. I have 2 ole fella schnauzers - and their medical is a kicker. So once I am in my "cottage' I am going to go to work parttime. Get some money back in savings. I don't regret that I spent my money doing for some young couples and other people. Would do it again. And I love spending on my family. So, here I am 75 and still kicking. LOL She'll do it. She is tough. Us older folks can do it. So can younger folks.

    Kudos to Kathleen for surviving. My one bedroom apartment is a palace in comparison. I don't drive any more and my Social Security is a lot more than hers, but I had high Alaska wages for over 10 years and was able to work till 64.. I wish her well in finding a part-time job and getting a van with solar. She is a trooper.

      Though a $1000 a month isn't much; living in her car gives her a financial edge because she don't have to pay rent. She could save up a bunch of money after a few years and pay cash for a nice used motor home or travel trailer... if she wanted to.

    • @midos6767
      @midos6767 7 років тому +10

      Cecilia Watt I agree.
      I also think at her age, she ought to be living in at least a travel trailer so she'd have a warm bed and running water & a place to shower & etc. Living in a subcompact car out in the woods would be difficult even for a young person in their twenties.. let along an elderly woman in her 60's.

    • @midos6767
      @midos6767 7 років тому +4

      ***** You're right, she'll give up on her outdoor car living when winter hits. She makes a thousand a month so she don't need to live in her car. With her low income, she could easily qualify for housing assistance such as section 8 or HUD housing. Through those options she could get a small apartment with low rent & have safe indoor housing. Or she could purchase a travel trailer & make payments on it & move into an RV Park.

    • @midos6767
      @midos6767 7 років тому +1

      John Lee Bass Its outrageous how landlords on the west coast charge like $2500 a month for little shit hole apartments. In the Midwest where I live.. for $2500 a month you can rent or buy a huge 4 bedroom house with a massive yard or acreage in a nice area. And $2500 a month can rent or buy a large downtown loft apartment or Condo with plenty of square footage. The average homeowner in my area has a mortgage payment of around $500 or more for average sized single family homes.

    I love your positive attitude Kathleen! I believe that, if you can afford to do this-it should be pretty doable-get yourself a tarp, roping, and poles (you can use just about anything- broomsticks even) to give yourself a lot more comfort and space but won't take up much room. You would have shade and protection from the rain. You can get so much from thrift stores, and the Dollar Tree which I have recently learned has so many great items to use. God bless you!
