@@Mike-jk3fo I was reading a Guitar magazine in 1984 march edition. In there I believe it was , but dont quote me, Ted Nugent who called Page "Fumble Fingers Page." Not that, that matters.
The thing about Eric’s playing is that there’s this crazy unpredictability, yet it somehow always manages to end amazingly. The best analogy I can think of right now is that think of his playing like a great story, you have no clue how it’ll start, how the middle will be, and how the end will be. It would be like watching the lord of the rings for the first time, but somehow over and over because he always does it. Whereas with players like joe (not to take anything away from him, he’s fucking great) there’s this formula to the story that’s familiar and you kind of know how it’s going to unfold. Still very solid, but wouldn’t give you the same experience where as if you were watching something foreign.
100% hit the nail on the head. That reckless abandon is what I love about Hendrix, Page, and Gales. They’re going places they’ve never been and to do that on stage in front of thousands is BOLD 🤘🏻
What you described is exactly why I love Page n Gail they took us the audience somewhere different than the album when they played live. It was like being on a journey with them. I also have to include Jerry Garcia seen him over 100 times, yes I'm a Dead Head but the Mighty ZEPPELIN is my favorite band. Peace brother be safe.😎✌💨💨
you should hear Eric and Andy Timmons play little wing with each other if you haven't. it's one of the most incredible musical performances i've ever seen.
Check out Gales' " I want my crown ". It's a funky blues song he wrote where he sings about being fed up with being second all the time to " Joe B. " and then at the end of the song/recording/videoclip he goes into the ring for a solo-duel with ... Joe Bonamassa "
Michael, your assessment is spot on. It’s exactly what made Hendrix such a great player. It’s almost like they allow their soul to completely take over the instrument. People that approach the instrument that way, I look past wrong notes because I appreciate the honesty so much. Thank you for shedding some light on Eric Gales. He is a great, humble person that truly appreciates his fans.
This guitar duel is one for the ages. Seriously haven't seen much better in my life. This should be a tv show for us guitar people where guys come on and have guitar duels and just throw down like this. Each picks one song and then fans pick one song to play
Both of them rip it in this video. A buffet of amazing blues rock shredding, a variable clinic. Both are amazing but I can't get enough of Eric's lead playing. He is so damn articulate. So clean.
I don't even know what I'm going to learn but I signed up just for how infectious your positivity is and the fact that you have FOUR kids. I have one boy and I know how much just ONE costs lol.
Truly a blessing listening to these two technicians of the guitar play together!!! Joe Bonamassa is an artist that I’ve come to love his playing. I’ve come late to the game with Joe but I dig him more and more!! I’ve know of Eric Gales from the early 90s. Being a southpaw, I’ve had my eyes on his playing and style 😎. Great performance by both!!
The courage to jump in & the intuitive confidence you will be able to get back out is what improvisation's all about- especially while playing live. Very COOL!
I agree with you about the taking chances thing. It is exciting to watch. Sometimes it's a train wreck but it's still worth it and very interesting. Amazingly Eric did it and made it back everytime!!!
I appreciate what you are doing, all of the bands that you cover are right up our alley. Was wondering when you would cover Bonamassa, thanks again from the mountains of Arizona!
Your analysis on Joe's playing is spot on. Think I liked his older less polished stuff best. That said I am still a huge fan and consider him 1 of the best I've ever seen.( 6 times ) Eric is amazing as well & I hope to get to see him.
Joe Bonamassa does one of these blues cruise ship shows every year practically and he brings a whole crew of other top notch players. Last year he had Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Samantha Fish among others and Paul Shaffer from the David Letterman show hosted it. Plenty of youtube videos of it out there. Oh and one more thing about Eric Gales, he not only plays a right handed guitar left-handed, but he also doesn't restring it the other way. So it's technically backwards AND upside down.
Congratulations! I really like this choice in comparison of two great players. I missed Eric's show last time he was here and am still kicking myself. I love his free flowing style and enthusiastic approach.
I remember buying Eric’s first album when it came out. I read an article that referred to him as The Second Coming of the Voodoo Child. I knew this kid had to be hot!! I was absolutely right!! I gotta side with Eric! I’ve been a fan since day one.
First thing, Eric Gales plays the guitar upside down with the low E on top and the high E on the bottom of the neck. These fine guitar slingers certainly bring the best out in each other. Wow.
I first saw and dug your “Midnight in Harlem” reaction video! I’m glad someone is talking about this Eric and Joe duel. I think you guys/gals have more fun and I want some of the action 😄👍🏽🤘🏽
I used this analogy elsewhere, that Hendricks was Jackson Pollock, while SRV was Rembrandt. I think it applies here, between Gales and Bonamassa as well.
Glad yer back! Joe and Eric are both crazed! Joe's voice always reminds me of Warren Haynes for some reason. It's only rock n roll but I like it! I Have heard so many idiots at guitar stores Talk shit about Bonamassa the kind of shit that you hear about guys like Satriani Or Van Halen, which is they rely on technique and they don’t have great seal or whatever which is all bullshit. With Bonamassa I have heard guys say he’s just a spoiled rich kid which he was not at all. He has a totally unique approach to blues, he has the best 5 6 and 7 Note sequencing this side of Eric Johnson. He’s an absolute incredible talent and any money busts on him doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about. I love Eric Gales for the same reason you do and I think he’s got chops for days, And he plays Restraining the guitar so he’s got the High E at the top like Albert King. Plus when he plays covers like Hulu channel slight return add such a unique cool groove to it it’s amazing. I love those players and I can’t pick a favorite. I’ve learned a lot from Bonamassa because I can learn from him. He plays right handed and strings to guitar normally. Gaels I can learn a lot from his approach but I can’t watch him and figure out what he’s doing because everything is totally turned around. They are both unbelievable Talents they will and have shops that are just as good As the best shred guys out there, And the thing that is amazing about Bonamassa Is the fact that he’s playing test sequences using two notes and switching strings after two notes. He’s got the right hand of Steve Morse, The left hand of Eric Johnson and he can also play any blues lick made famous by any blues player in any era. The interesting thing about those players if they choose not to simply play the cliché licks more than occasionally as a reference point
He's dangerous player, you are right, I agree, buddy guy is another.. They take risks, as a player I try to aim for that same thing rather than even consistency.
Joe and Eric have known each other a long time. Joe produced Eric's album. Edit: That's one of Joe's songs that he most well known for. (He wrote it in 7 mins) Yes was Robert Randolph
Agreed on the exploratory style of Eric. For me it makes it more sincere in a way. However Joe is a better guitar player note for note. Those two guys on a stage together sharing music outweighs either one as an individual talent. Great band. Powerful.
What I read somewhere about eric gales is that he is right handed and his guitar is strung normal but that he just flips it over and plays it left handed with the strings going the wrong way, which i have never heard of anyone doing before.... And yes it had something to do with watching his uncle or someone play and trying to mimic him so he just held it that way being so young at the time he did not know anybetter.... Ive only watched first bit before the music starts but im interested to see if those strings are the wrong way and what the reaction to that may be
What say YE?

And yes it had something to do with watching his uncle or someone play and trying to mimic him so he just held it that way being so young at the time he did not know anybetter.... Ive only watched first bit before the music starts but im interested to see if those strings are the wrong way and what the reaction to that may be
You just described the difference between a master and a savant. Both are masters but Joe takes it to amazing levels without fear
